Picked up a lego crane for xmas... then got too anxious and had it built up 3 weeks before xmas. Really like it but it's not the same as our trucks.

So I decided to build a crane. Not very far along. I've chosen wheels tires axels springs. I purchased a sample test of each and modeled them up in CAD to set the basis of the design.

Pretty good so far - I modeled the axels and tires up this past week. Since I do this before or after work this might be sporatic.

Spent last few days going through the outrigger supports several times and calling different businesses trying to find the right combination of extrusions.
and we have success.
then added sprockets and shafts to drive the primary stage.

don't get my hopes up. But I have been thinking about this build for several years.

wheels and rims are on back order.

Looks like a Terex AC350 to me, am I right?

For inspiration, look at the LTM1400 from Richard: http://www.rmw-technoscalemodels.nl/nl/pagina/modellen/ltm1400.html
There are two of those BTW. I have often photographed this crane, and did some driving and hoisting as well.

He is also building a LR1750 crawler crane.

There are not a lot of cranes out there, always nice to see a crane build.
Kerst and Eef7260 here on the forum made some nice cranes as well.

Looking good Izzy. How many channels is it going to take to operate the crane?

Izzy
02-28-2015, 11:28 PM
Hmmm - good question

- Power drive/stabilize
- Fwd / Rev
- Steer axels 1 & 6
- Steer 2 & 5
- Steer 3 & 4
Outrigger stage 1
Outrigger stage 2
Outrigger A
Outrigger B
Outrigger C
Outrigger D
Power Carriage
Pivot Right / Left
Boom Lift/Lower (hydraulic)
Boom Extension ??????
Cable In / Out
Counter weight Lift/Lower
Counter weight in/out

at least 18 I suppose - not sure how I am doing the boom extension just yet.

I was figuring to have 3 receivers -2 battery sources
driving
Stabilizing
Boom and Carriage

18 channels? Is there a transmitter that would supply more than that just in case? Anyways this is looking amazing thus far.

I picked up a frsky taranis radio for $279. A lot of heli aerial photography guys use them. I'm not wanting to push anything but this radio works for me and is on par or better than $$$ other systems. Here is a clip of the specs.

Chi-Noos - really high end stuff can. Spectrum does 18 but it's really a 9 with a servo split that doubles over to 18. Not real sure how it's done but it's available.

Cooper - appreciate the info.

As of right now. Since you don't operate support legs while driving or boom functions while driving or working legs . I figure to use a 10 channel and 3 diff er entry receivers - switching models in between. Therefore 30 sets of 10 channels
spectrum DX10

Ok so yesterday I cut the extrusions for the chassis. Last night I drilled a bunch of holes and made fixtures to hold the parts for the summer frames. This morning I did some more mill work for the spring mounts. And when I got home I cleaned up a bunch of burrs from all that.

So add another 5 hr to the build.

Stopping by the alum. Shop to see if they can tack weld my sub frames together.

Just from my stuff I have to put stickey notes on things to remember what switches do what, you might need to make a operators manual!! Lol :). So what did you do for the gear that drives the rack? Is that a motor or actuators also? (To extend the supports outward).

23 design hours thus far

57 Build hours thus far ( includes ordering and tracking down orders)

Details of things like steering linkage, drive shafts lengths etc. Is figured as build hours. Re-adjusting and duplicate attempts on the sliders is all as build. Some would call those hours design but they are more of on the fly R&D than true design. I also only took the design so far as to place and coriagraph major components as the design aspect is to facilitate the build. Rather than the build is to b prove the design.

Izzy, You know I had to bust you on something :rolleyes: Your approach on this build is way past anything that I have done. Mine seems to be- measure, make long, trim, trim, and finally get it correct. Most of your parts fit the first time and work.

Can't wait to see this vehicle finished and working.

Izzy
03-28-2015, 08:15 PM
First time. That support took at least 4 tries and 2 different material tries. First was a 2" wide 3/16 alum from lowes. Put it in the vise and pulled it over . Got all the way to the last bend and it fractured through. Great for a pinch flange horrible for forming....
then thought about brass. But didn't have anything long enough. Then tried this 1 x 1/8 also from lowes and it did great! But then had to make 3 just to get the blank versus finished item right. Alum is tricky stuff to figure a bend allowance and heck forming in a metal vise and pulling it over by hand isn't science either. So a good drawing would do me No good on this one. This is where I rely on my farm boy upbringing And back yard engineering

Cooper
03-28-2015, 08:59 PM
Lol, that's been my approach to a lot of stuff, cut, recut, bend, break, cut, break, ect,,,,, even did some backside cuts and it always is the very last bend on a part that is coming out perfect that the aluminum breaks!! Thanks for sharing , it's looking real good!!

Well good friend we're getting close. Been sick mostly last 2 weeks but still working so slow progress. Took most this week off to recover and get some chores done round the house which means .... late nights playing rc stuff.

Did in fact have a conversation with T today about my progress , about how this was to take a good 6 months to have it half way done For Indy.....
Add 2hr for Monday, 4 hr for Tuesday, 2 for Wednesday, 8 for Thursday and another 4 for this morning.
So 20 hr added and what do you get?

Now it has
Axial 55 turn crawler motor
2.5:1 Integy gear reduction
16:1 RC4WD planetary
1.47:1 RC4WD transfer case
TLT axels
1.9 RC4WD rims
Militants tires 4-1/4" tall

Ok so this version did not work out. Tried 2 different mounting with no improvement. Turns out my pivot is too far away from the door surface. So a new design and more printing to be done.
I broke rule 1 of design. Test your design. I was so anxious to make hinges I didn't properly test in my design models.

I'm no designer by any means, but what do you think about a "simple" Piano Hinge for the doors? I've seen a few 1:1's with those type of hinges on the doors. You might need to make cut outs for them, but I'm thinking they'd work, and should look ok as well.

Much is just figuring it as I go. Like I must have my ratio off for the cab height. As you see the dash looks right with the windshield but neededva sub floor to get the seat height close and then it's like someone could stand and walk through the cab. In general it's close but not exact. The interior was a Sunday afternoon thought and a bunch of pieces here and there.

Been a long winter with many distractiond, but with the help of a good couple friends getting the bug to build again.
So if some of this is repetitive - appologies. But this is where I am at.

Lift cylinders, another learning curve here. Thought that sir fittings were air tight right? Not so much. Have to replace the fittings, they leak.

Had to have the caps remade since I designed them too small the first time round.http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160221_163351_zpsylaberoz.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160221_163351_zpsylaberoz.jpg.html)

Yes whole shelf and whole bench. Part of the reason why I bought a utility trailer for my rc's. She won't fit in the Envoy.

After mocking up the boom I set her on her feet. Wow, almost had rims string on the bench the tires were so squished. And that's with the stock foams.
So been asking around - see previous posts.
So This is what i did
Dissassembly,
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172211_zpshjlxqupi.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172211_zpshjlxqupi.jpg.html)
Donor wheels with hard foam inserts http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172222_zps0z8oqvan.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172222_zps0z8oqvan.jpg.html)
Slice part of the carcass off
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172230_zpso7fltthd.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172230_zpso7fltthd.jpg.html)http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172240_zps623aawvw.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172240_zps623aawvw.jpg.html)
Wrap 2 side by side in craft foam sheet - test fitted strip in side tire to get correct size. Had tried tires along but did not fill inside space.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii94/Isleifr/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172309_zpscyqmxvlx.jpg (http://s262.photobucket.com/user/Isleifr/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160312_172309_zpscyqmxvlx.jpg.html)

And then squish it all inside. Good thing these tires are soft.
Then used clamps to clamp together.

After having had bolts fall out of these rims, I drilled out the 2.5 mm holes and put in 3mm screws, thread the outer shell to keep the stud look.

Used 25 donor tires, 2 sheets of foam and 132 screws to do all 12 wheels.
Just finished them yesterday down here at Travis' so no testing yet. Let's hop this works

Busted a nut loading her in the cargo trailer. Traveled ok but rolled a bit, no damage. Ran it yesterday, moved good even with all the weight. Need to add more gear reduction. For some odd reason a firgelli extended while I was driving and got ripped apart. Will need a power cut out installed to prevent this again.

Hello everyone, I haven't died or nothing, just keeping low on the radar and workin lots of hours.
Crane has new style swing out stabilizers with heavier structure.

I see that photobucket has my photos up once again. I'll have to try and figure out why....
