I've been working on this one for a while now but it is finally starting to take shape. There is much more to do yet though...

I spent the afternoon building the tailgate, spill plate and tail pan. I thought I would give this one a little spill plate to protect the lights;). Things on the rear aren't completely finalized but they are getting close. I think once the light holes are drilled and the mudflaps are in place it will be looking good.

Each side panel wraps around to the front and they join in the middle. I welded it up today and you can barely see the join. I could have made the outer pieces in three parts but I thought two was better for the look I was going for.

Is customer going for a polished chrome like finish on the trailer ? Think it would be a shame to powdercoat this one :D

RCP57
10-16-2015, 07:51 AM
It was going to be powder coated but I think it will be painted now. I agree that this one would look good polished but for the look we want it needs to be painted in my opinion. These are complicated and require careful fitting of a lot of individual parts. The price tag for one of these is a fair bit larger than the half round.

Thanks Alex.

Well, I was up early this morning and put in a long work day but it's finally paying off. I was asked to put a tarp mechanism on this trailer so I said I would give it a shot. I had no real plans I just started getting at it. Luckily I had ordered two of these little gear motors months ago. I grabbed one off the wall and made up some stuff to get things moving. I won't be making the tarp itself but the mechanism seems to work well. Still a couple days worth of work in this one but I'm starting to like it a lot. I may want to keep it if I spend too much more time on it.lol

Mark, yes I think I can add a tarp to yours or at least the mechanism. I'm not into sewing though so I don't know if I will be adding the actual tarp material to any of these. After building this one yesterday I think the tarp mech is going to run in the $150US range.

I'm not sure how thick that material is but I'm pretty sure it's too thick. I'm doing some testing now and it needs to be very thin on a long trailer.

The video was great, and pretty funny too. Nice work Reg.

Thanks.lol This is a hobby to me first and foremost even though I'm trying to make a living at it. I have to try and keep it fun or it won't work out.

Thanks Dwayne! When you are ready let me know and I'll put you on the list.

Here's what I'm trying at the moment. I'm using landscaping cloth and it seems to work well although you can see through it slightly. I'm in a bit of a pickle because I am sure there are better materials out there but that comes at a price. I want to keep things as reasonable as I can but still make money for my effort so I hope this is OK. I guess I'll see what you guys think but I think this is my best option for thickness, price and ease of use.

Man Mario hates it and now you too? Oh well, I don't make the music so I only have to worry about you guys liking my metal fab.lol For the record though I do listen to other types of music however the last time I posted a video with ACDC playing in the background YouTube dubbed some other crap over top of it so that it wouldn't get pulled for copyright. I took the video down instead.lol Playing house music in the background doesn't seem to ruffle any feathers and I like to dance around while I'm building:lol::lol::rolleyes:.

You can tear this if you pull on it firmly by hand but I don't see it tearing under normal use. I will try to see how expensive the material Keith used on the Mack is before I say this is the answer. I just want to keep it simple because I don't really have any interest in making the actual tarp itself. I don't sew nor do I want to invest in a sewing machine. I'm a metal guy...

Well, better than country music.

I think the fabric works great and plays the part well. I wouldn't worry about the see through effect. Keep in mind, the box is a light colour and shiny. Who covers an empty trailer? Put some dirt in there and then see how it looks. :)

My wife said exactly the same as you about covering a trailer full of dirt and not seeing through the fabric. She's a smart girl. Not sure what she's doing here actually.

Hey Reg have you thought about speaker cloth ? It can be had relatively cheap and in different colors. Looks good as always ;)

Yes I have Brandon. It was actually the first thing I tried but it's a bit thick for rolling up 30"+ of tarp. It is cheap and stronger than the landscaping cloth though.

Yeah let's get this straight. I thought the consensus was, I should go to a yoga class to study the pants and find out if they were see through like the landscaping cloth not where them myself. I should be careful there though too as I guess there are guys that do yoga and I'm not personally interested in any of that "fabric".

Thanks Neil. I plan to hit a local cloth store asap to see what, why and how much. I was also pricing out cheap sewing machines this morning. Just when I think I have enough equipment there is something else I have to buy. Time to think back to grade 8 sewing class:confused:.... Nope don't remember a single thing. Oh well, something else I have to teach myself...

I wanted to try this last night but I ran out of steam so this morning I took the water tank off of the "Hoarder Special" and stuck the 5th wheel plate on. I think Benny's trailer looks pretty sweet behind it. There are a pile of hours in metal fab between these to pieces!

The nice thing about ripstop nylon its thin flexible and the edges can be fused together with a solder iron carefully ,like melting the end of a nylon rope . I made bike packs years ago and that's how we sealed the edges . Therefore no need for a sewing machine but if you want one pay the shipping and I'll send you one . I think spandex is to thick it's meant to keep extra body parts contained . Mike

Mario, I think even though we have never met we have spent a fair bit of time emailing back and forth over the last couple of years and you've gotten to know me fairly well. You know that when I take on any project whether it's for myself or someone else I want it to turn out better than the last. I'm not one that is easily satisfied with my work and that keeps pushing me to try harder. At the end of it all I just want to be able to say that I did the best I could and have it be the truth pass or fail. Nothing is ever perfect but as long as I am having fun, learning new things and the customers are happy I'll keep at it. If not, I'll blame it on you because you're the one that got me started building this crap for other people:lol::lol::lol::cool:.

Anyway, here's a picture of the new tarp on Benny's beautiful trailer.:)

HI Reg everyday I hope to see pics of your stuff on here , your making me push my train modelling up a notch or so , but this awesome trailer is making me do something in metal not wood and that I've engineered myself . Sandy tells me to make the dump trailer like yours but I don't know where to put the railway wheels ! But I've thought of a cool project you could build ---- a stone slinger ! Take care Mike

Good stuff Mike! I think that's kinda the fun part of this because we all push each other to achieve more whether we know it or not. The end result is the hobby just gets better. I have been thinking about a slinger truck for a while now but I just don't have time at the moment for any projects like that. It would be cool to shoot dirt at someone at a show though!

No train talk. That's where I spend the majority of my day. Not the real deal RR but NYC Transit. Kinda looking forward to December though, start training to operate their diesel work trains and I wont have to deal with the lovely nyc passengers.

I haven't accomplished as much as I would like lately but I have been doing some work.lol I wasn't able to get any metric angle but I finally managed to find some SAE aluminum that is close in size to the stock Tamiya trailer rails and easy to get. It is about .010 thicker and only 19mm on the top vs 20mm but I think it's close enough. Anyway, this is my first go at making the rails for these two trailers. The one trailer is running aluminum airbag suspension and axles from China and the other is using stock Tamiya tandems and suspension from Exclusive RC on the other two axles. Both will be finished completely different.
