On the real deal, does the center support brace sit directly above the lift axle or is it slightly off one way or the other? I don't have a good square side on picture of your real trailer to go from.

just a touch forward of center line of lift axle

People say that sometimes you need to go backwards in order to go forwards and that's what happened here. I ordered in a special sheet of softer aluminum to use on this and a couple of other builds because the length and sharpness of the bends are hard on my small sheet metal equipment. I was able to get the right grade of aluminum but not the desired thickness despite my efforts. Getting it was a gong show as the first sheet I ordered showed up heavily damaged and unusable other than for building cabs. The supplier ordered another sheet right away and a few days later it showed up but was also damaged slightly but usable(someone tried to use a forklift to lift a sheet off of the top and bent one side). Anyway, with the material being thinner than I wanted and soft I was not sure how it would work out. I bent up the tub for this and it was very easy to work with. Once bent I realized how easily it dents where it's flat and that it is no good for this trailer. After Xmas I bent up a new tub using regular material and I've spent a number of hours over the last few days working to get things back on track. It was tough to get it bent the same as the parts I had already made but after some swearing, sweating and struggling I got all the pieces fit and it's coming along.

I'm happy you like it Mark! It's my main focus right now so it should come together at a decent pace. Sorry for the delay but I really felt it wasn't good enough the way it was. Because of it's shape and size this thing will hold a ton of dirt:eek:. Best be careful not to overload it!

Another day in the life of a toy builder. I have never spent an entire day on a tailgate until today.lol Shooting for a realistic looking high lift style tailgate without the mechanics to make it lift. I'm not sure how it will function in real life but it looks OK I think.lol

reg is the steerable axle as wide as the regular axle? back pan looks real nice

Yes it appears to be very close to the same width especially with the super single tires. It always wants to flop over to the right for some reason and I sometimes forget to straighten it out for pictures. I'm not sure how to go about making it turn the correct direction while being towed. It probably needs some soft springs pulling on it from side to side to keep it straight. It looks like there might be room to install a lift servo if you were so inclined to do so...

Here's a little update. It doesn't look like much is happening but this trailer is eating up more time than I thought it would. I like how it's turning out though so I'm not grumpy yet.lol

I added some springs to the steer axle. They aren't super pretty but they are mostly out of sight and they keep things straight. I finally finished up the flaps and mounts as well as the gate latches. Next up will be the ladders and then the tarp...

Yes it will hold a lot of volume Joe. It's around 30" long inside and with the flat bottom it is definitely more chunky than a normal half round. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 5 gallon pail of dirt nearly fit in this heaped. Having said that I will be very disappointed if I see that kind of load in it unless it's light material. They just aren't meant to move that kind of weight. No ACME thread on these trailers. The motors I am using work better with a normal pitch thread and I have also gone up to a larger diameter for added strength. I have days where I struggle to work on certain things that's for sure but I am trying to make an honest go at this as a job so things have to keep moving along. For the most part it is pretty cool building toys for a paycheck. I also enjoy the look on other peoples faces when I tell them what I do besides fishing. "you build...toys?... WHAT?"lol

I told you I was saving that color combo for the next one!lol I'm glad you like it Mark. I think it will have been worth the wait as it looks pretty sharp in person. I'm taking the day off today but I will get it boxed up tomorrow. If I look at it any longer it might end up on my shelf...:D

I'm happy to see so much positive response to this. The shape of this trailer was difficult for me to form with my equipment so it took a lot of fiddling around to get it where it is. In the end I really like it and it was an interesting challenge.

Doggy, I make the screw drives for these trailers. They consist of a threaded shaft with prop rod and a high torque planetary motor.

Greasy is good Reg. That means maybe the material won't stick in the box and prevent it from laying on its side!:lol:

we use antifreeze in the winter if it gets real cold over night..
the aluminum tubs have a Teflon liner on the floors slicker then grease
you will fall on your @$$ if its wet and you in the trailer

Reg I'm curious, how much would something like this be for a dump box?

RCP57
02-12-2016, 10:35 AM
It would be very similar to your half round I would think Calvin. I would have to build a false floor to recess part of the lift, a one off tailgate and all that. I would think $900 or more without a tarp(for KH). The 1/4 round isn't an easy shape for me to form accurately with the tooling I have so it takes a lot of time to get it right. A truck box would be a little easier than doing another trailer though because it's half the length.

Kausekaos
02-12-2016, 11:11 AM
I put the other box on my truck because i was bored and i like the way it looks but technically its not mine anymore so just thinking about what I should do.
