Thanks to the guys who have set up the new forum, I was somewhat depressed with the thought that I was going to miss all the great RC models that all of you have built. With that said heres an update on the Tigercat swamp logger. Just need to turn out some wheels(8), build grapples, powder coat and make the decals. Fred

Great job Fred. What tires did you use ?

Greg, Those tires are from Dakota Toys, size is 30.5-32 (2"x4"). They are of a size that is used on the Big Bud tractor and they fit the Skidder for 1/16th scale. What are you working on now? Fred

Wow. That is a piece of art! If I could build something like that, I would be proud! Its a beautiful model for sure. I would love to see you eventually build something like this for a functional RC model. Even so, its incredible.

Thanks for the tire information Fred. As for me I am trying to stay away from my next build because once I start, WELL you know how it goes. ( I want to work on it 24-7 ) My winter project is going to be a John Deere 748 Grapple skidder to add to the fleet. I have the tires, hyd cylinders and electric motors already. Only have to buy the pump and spools. :D

Won't be as nice as yours, but I am looking forward to operating it. I have a few years of time on a CAT 518 line skidders, good fun when I was young. My body pains remind me of those days from time to time though...

Greg, If I were to build a RC piece of equiptment at this time I would like to build a Cat 527 Track skidder. It would make a good duel purpose machine, logging and dozing plus I just like the looks of them. I attended a farm tractor show today with a table full of painted boat anchors ... static models. Lots of interest in the Tigercat because of the TV show,"Swamp Loggers" I put in a lot of good word on you guys and all your RC logging equiptment, A lot of the people I talked to are looking forward to seeing yours and Lou's Videos. We are on the same page Fred, as I have the 527 in a future build. I took photo's of one with plans to build it, BUT, not sure if there would be room for 3spools to control that 6 way blade and 3 spools for the grapple.

My brother in-law has one, I have to say it is SCARRY the steep ground they operate them on.... Years ago I ran a CAT 518 skidder, switch back trails up the hill and come straight down with logs pushing you. With the 527 it backs up steep hills better than going forward..

Greg, I was wondering if at 1/14 scale there would be enough room for all the RC componets in a track skidder. Also what do you think about building with steel, would it end up being to heavy? I got a Broder tractor to build before I make the commitment to build a RC model. Fred

Fred, I was going to say that the skidder looks like it is factory built but it looks way better that a factory could make it ,well done. Stay with that RC track skidder idea.

Thanks having a look at the Tigercat Joe, I appreciate your opinion. As far as the track skidder goes, its the one I would like to build. I will need to put it off for a while because I'm working on a 1946 John Deere LA ( full sized). Its not a restoration, just a complete overhaul with a paint job included. Then I have a 1/16 scale Broder tractor to build. After that, the Cat skidder would be next. I have been working on the concept and drawings. I'm going to need some help with the electronics and the best way to build the Tracks with the least amount of friction. Thanks again. Fred

Thought I would add these pictures of the Madill 046 for those who may not have seen them. Now building a Broder Tractor, be a while yet before pictures. Looking forward to seeing a Cat 527 RC skidder that should be taking shape in some of our fellow members shops. Fred

The Broder Tractor is slowly taking shape. Its a small 3 wheeled tractor built in the early 1900s. Fred

Wow, the Broder is looking very nice. Look at the engine detail! I've never seen a tractor with one driven wheel. I am more used to seeing them the other way around. Two driven wheels, and tricycle steering wheel up front. Definitely a one of a kind model.

The Broder Tractor is finished. This is a one of a kind, built from a sales flyer and a picture, the original tractor was built by American Universal Tractor company out of Portland Oregon. The model is scratch built, all steel and powder coated. The actual model is a dark gray but the pictures were taken in low light, no flash, so the color is not very accurate. Happy New Year everyone. Fred

Greg, yes, thats what I was looking for, you have had such good sucess with it that I think thats the way to go.
I have another project started, so I will be busy on it the rest of the winter. It won't be RC but a person will be able to drive and operate it, I'll wait to describe it with pictures, provided its not a failure. Its a unique project. Fred

Iron Art

rcguyfarms, Not sure if I left it raw how the alum. frame would look. The plus side of leaving it raw would be looks, and maybe easier than dissasembling for paint and reassembling. There are a lot of things that will be tuned up before the thing will be finished and reassembled. Fred

Thanks Greg, I've got a lot of time in this build and there is still aways to go. The neat thing about this build is I met a older fellow whose Dad and Uncle utilized this brand of tractor in 1908 to plow the praire of North Dakota. He has been able to supply me with pictures of his Dad and the tractor. My plan is to take the completed model to the Toy Farmer Toy show this summer in North Dakota and also visit the ground that these tractors plowed. Thanks again, Fred

Fantastic!
Is that a working platform on the plow?
And the front wheel is an automatic steering aid?
Very neat - haven't seen this before!

Iron Art
05-10-2012, 12:33 PM
Jens, You got it right on both accounts, the steering chains are connected directly to the cable that runs around the guide wheel pivot. The guide wheel drove down the dead furrow and would guide the tractor. This would free up the operator to attend to the Tractor and plow. Being that this is a 1910 model tractor there's few to be seen but there are a couple on UTube. Fred
