View Full Version : Gaullee Pa,Always wanted a 9 spd Atlas movin truck

Back a few years ago a good friend of mine had a truck built for his line of work.(movin) Always thought it was a neat rig.

So...Now that I have a few builds under my belt,I'm a gunna go for it!
Well close anyhow. Also was lookin at the pile of tamiya 3spds that weren't doing nothing. So figured lets do something useful w/them.
Now in real life you shift a tractor a bunch of times, why not with scale model? So this is what I did.
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn50/FreddyGearDrive/freddys%20best/dumppics3953.jpg
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn50/FreddyGearDrive/freddys%20best/dumppics3956.jpg
It will only be a 6 spd on the upward shift,3 of the combos will overlap ratios. Still 6 is kooler than 3!
Now the tractor. As you see in the pics, the tractor is almost as long as the trailer. So here's a tour of the build from start to date.

WOW! Thanks guys! Glad you boys are liken the build so far.
Those diffs are all aluminium & the drain plug is stock. The only problem is there a tad wider than the Tamiya diffs but found ways around that.
sk1cent,the exspanded metal is from pmd & works rather well for this build.
Tiny-trucker,the framing wasn't to bad to make, but figuring how to make it come off & on the truck was a different story.
Really wish I had some new progress to post on this baby. But since this forum opened haven't done dittle on my builds. So hope'in this week I can get back on my building again.
Later today I'll do up some pics of the ramp locking system,& the sizes of the square stock used for car hauler.
Thanks guys!

Fred how did you find a way around the wider axles? Your doing a nice job. Ed

FreddyGearDrive
08-29-2010, 08:20 AM
Yea Ed,I think you were one of the first guys I saw useing these babies.Had the truck driveline done,& started installing the mud guards & quarter fenders. When I noticed the diff was like a 1/4" wider than the stock ones. So got out mr trusty dremel & went to work on setting the hex mount a tad deeper. Well after makin a real mess out of one of my rims, decided it might be better to get the mill involed in this butchin.
Couldn't hog out enough of the rim to make up the differance,so also turned hexes down a tad & still was a little wide.So then came up with the ole-spings in mud guard mounts. Now you really have to look to see there just a tad to wide. Yea there to wide for dualls,& to narrow for super singles to look right on the rig. Can't believe rc channel didn't think of that when they made these axles. But there still bad to the bone!

JAMMER
08-29-2010, 09:13 AM
I also saw that they were to wide. I haven't found a solution to the problem yet but I am going to get a set of Scale Art axles. I think some material can come off the inside of the axle were the bearings are I don't know how much. I f you look at the housings the cap on the end is pressed on and that may be a way to shorten them. Ed

Great work so far and really unique truck. I've seen pictures of "Toters" haul a pilot car, but never on the roof with front loading ramps.

So what car do you plan to carry? I imagine you'll have to modify the car speeds to really slow it down so you can drive it up there. Looking forward to your updates.

Hey Freddy...

First let me say that the cab and the car deck are AWESOME..

As for the Drom Box. I think that first the hinges have got to go. Many times these have more of a "T" hinge on them.

HERE (http://www.bearwood.com/product376.html) is a "T" hinge that would work perfectly. You are looking at hinge #2.. I personally would file the arrow down so that then come to a smooth rounded point but that is up to you. The width is 11/32 and the length is 17/32 so they are perfect size.

Second I think it would look better if it were like the prototype and the drom box being the same height as the cab and the car deck over the drom as well.

The thing looks great. I'm watching this build.
