I have been working on this for a bit. Slowly getting parts and massaging the styrene. Hopefully it will come out as I am planning. It's by far my favorite truck....building it myself from scratch is much more rewarding. Originally I was going to make it a tractor....but I believe now I will make it a dump, probably screw drive.

Now this is a great build! You have the look and nice work on the hood. There is one of these trucks that has been fully restored that goes to a big truck show I go to every where the guy brings it in on his lowboy here are the picks.

Totally awesome! I'm a fan of these Oshkosh trucks too! Something built in my home state that I can feel good about! They are really amazing machines! You've got my full attention. You certainly are off to an excellent start. Watch Despicable Me, recently? :D

TC: Thank you Sir. Boy I'd love to have that guys truck. I never see any like that for sale, what do you think that would sell for?

Spudd, SW, skl1cent, russ, smallhaul : Thanks

Dreamweaver: I made a mold/pattern/jig heated the styrene with a torch and bam! Boy was I happy with that and now tickled I did something that puzzles the masters. hehehe

rcman, vanisle: the tires and rims are from AFV, I am going to need some custom hub adaptors for them though. No problems got them pretty quickly.

Nathan: the kids had been watching the movie when I was working on the cab, they liked that a lot!

I am by far an amateur with styrene. The only other thing I've done with it is my 535 cab. I use Bondene ("glue") a utility knife and a Zona saw.

I was finally able to operate the P-series tonight, low n' slow and high gear is just right. The crab steer is pretty sweet too, it'll turn a tight corner. I still need a drive shaft for the rear end to get all six wheels "pulling". I've got a nice custom grill now. Fab'd up a battery box, steps, fuel tank and worked in some air tanks from Brian. It's coming along good.

I worked on some door and hood lines last night and today. Previously I massaged the hood to work with the new grill from HeavyMetal, he did a really, really, really nice job! I tried my hand at the battery box, steps and fuel tank. I mounted some air tank blanks under the battery box that I got from Brian in PA, sanded them a little and counter-sunk some screws.

I have made a bit more progress: tried my own dump bed, magnetic tailgate "hold", steps on the fuel tanks, diamond plate on the battery box, reworked some body/door seams ect and cab lights.

I need to redo my screw drive, it's a bit whopper jawed, not near as nice as what I want it to be. I am anxious (but patient) to get my custom parts that I have ordered from a few fine gentleman here (they will help set it off nicely).

I hope to:

1) complete my Challenger in the next week, I'm waiting on some bearings and a battery
2) gotta fix my Skidder (I believe I have injured the steering servo, stripped something)

3) finish the belly-dump

and then after the P-series it will be a Kenworth W900 (not sure what the letter after the 900 is, I don't know my trucks that well, I have pics though) daycab and a double secret piece of JD construction equipment.

Pretty nice and I am envious for sure. I do wish I had the tools and the knowledge on how to start my own scratch build. Much better than the kits that are being offered out there. :D

Where does one get tires and wheels from ... like these used here? Are they 'home-grown' or is there a manufacturers website with sizes to choose from?

not to be a stickler for details but the 1:1 scale P series has a HUUUGE steering box hanging off the drivers side chassis rail...

Snochaser
08-10-2012, 10:30 AM
I'm aware of that. There are a lot of things that aren't on my model that are on 1:1.

Mawler1
08-10-2012, 08:08 PM
true and that steering box would be hard to integrate into the scale version

and it's an awesome build, as I have a soft spot for our 1:1 one with it's Cat 1674, (I think )14 or18 Speed Roadranger gearbox and a pair of 56,000 Lb diffs

wouldn't mind having a scale version of it but with a straight cab - (our 1:1 one ended on its side and has a damaged cab) after I finish my Knight Hauler

Looks great Ben! I wish that I was going to Indy too....:(:(:(

Got all the axles locked now. Bunch more goodies on the way. Hopefully I'll get them before St Louis rolls around.
