Well it arrived in the mail today. Scott's build of the unit crane inspired me to build one myself. Mog and I have all the hauling down pat but nothing for loading! I got some 360 robotic servos on the way to that are about the same strength as Scott's.

They huge package that arrived!

what i got for a bucket.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/ANTheStuff/RC/-Unit%20Crane/bucket.jpg

"It's a brass, highly detailed dragline bucket.

It has one shive to work the bucket. The picture doesn't to the detail justice.

The bucket is fully functional. It has chains and a crossbar.

The scale would be 1:48. (works out to 1:16 for the Unit Crane)

The bucket open is three and a half inches.

The bucket is 1 1/2 inch wide, 1 inch high from the bottom of the bucket to the top of the side rail - not including the teeth, and 1 5/8 inch from the bottom of the teeth to the very highest part of the bucket.

It is also 2 1/2 inches long."

Yay! More cable machines! I'll be watching this. I've had pretty good luck with using braided fishing line rather than string. It's stiffer like cable and you can get different diameters depending on what test you buy. Just make sure it's fairly round and not the flattened stuff. I use Stren.

I'm just catching up with the action here. Cranes are always cool in my book.

You might look into braided silk fishing line on eBay. I use it on my 1'25 crane, but it is strong enough for larger scales. It will cut your hands before it will break, if it's not rotton. And it looks like cable; black, round, not flat. Dan

Dean, I use 2mm black nylon cord. As soon as you posted up that you bought a crane I searched all through my e-mails and paypal to try and find out where I bought the cord from and couldn't find the place. I think I bought it from a venetian blinds manufacturer.

The nylon cord is very strong and you can melt the ends. What is nice is you can make a single knot to tie it and just slightly melt the knot to keep it from coming loose.

for your top servo mount, does it bend down then go to a standoff and bolt to the floor?
Also how is the angle aluminum mounted at the floor?

The top mount is only attached at the rear. The bottom angle aluminum has a threaded hole and has one screw coming up from the bottom, towards the front. I made the assembly like a "wedge" and the two mounting points just secure the assembly. Remember that all of the drums only pull in one direction...

LOL everyone wants one of them. Scott is making a tracked one and i think im gonna just pull mine around for now lol. kinda expensive upgrade to it for it to move so little. Scott's tracked one is gonna use a separate rc gear for the tracks and i dont blame him. he would have to get one of those center things that lets you run the wires down and being servo that would 6 wires worth and not cheap to do!

Also some info on those servos. Apparently it only has one metal gear... but it does have dual ball bearings.

Modulation: Analog

Torque:
4.8V: 201.4 oz-in (14.50 kg-cm)
6.0V: 213.9 oz-in (15.40 kg-cm)

Speed:
4.8V: 0.19 sec/60°
6.0V: 0.16 sec/60°

not sure what speed works out to but it seems fast enough for me!

It won't be self contained though. it will be mounted on a diorama, and the motors will be under the table. the upper unit will be fully functional, the tracks will be planted. I may build a truck type carrier chassis for it however. It too would be mounted to the dio. I did a similar convesion on an O scale (1/48) Northwest crane, smaller than this one. It was for a guy with an elaborate big bux model railroad. The crane worked well. I didn't have a digital camera then.

Hey, Stuff, I'm intrigued by this radio. My crane's upper unit requires 5 channels, and I have a 4 and a 2 channel radio(s), but I would like to run on a single radio rather than juggling two at a time. The only other 6 channel ones I've seen are pretty expensive. Do you know the max voltage the receiver can operate on? I'm running my Hitec at 8+ volts.

their info states:

This transmitter requires a PC to modify any of the channel variables including mixing and servo reversing.

They also sell the USB cable to do the above.

What i need to know is does that have to be done to use this radio for the ESCs and servos in our cranes, or will it work already?

Do you have your radio already, and if so, what do you think of it? Dan.(pretty green at RC stuff still)

They do have more channel radios there but more money of course.

the usb cable is needed to change the radios configuration. like to change the direction of the switches etc.

as for voltage, i havent a clue. my order is on backorder because the stupid usb cable is backordered. All i can hope for is that they get in soon and get to me about the same time my replacement servo arrives. It sucks seeing the truck/trailer/crane sitting on the coffee table and not being able to play with the crane!

Nice little model you have. I recognize that swing gear you are using. I bought a bag of those and they seem to work pretty good. I noticed in the video that your swing is starting and stopping instantly and causing the bucket to swing from side to side. That,s okay on a small model but you would have big problems with a larger machine. Just my observation but real draglines cannot operate like that. Nice model though. Another old toy saved!!!

Dragline bucket was an Ebay find. I believe it was 1/150th scale and its all brass.

I do need to get those extensions. Originally that guy would not ship to Canada :cop: he was quite strict about that.

I would like to find a bigger scale looking bucket but all I find is 3-400$ ones that are models!
