Today I made housing for the hydr. pump and the motor. As you can see I use tooth belt between the pump and the motor.
The pump is from Jung-Fluid.

Your machining skills are great....I like the front axel set up... And the multi point backers are sweet.....

Are you scaling this all from photos and measurements? Or are you engineering and using the 1:1 for inspiration---- either way it's up there with a few of the the greats........

All G-codes are saved, but I might do many parts differently if I ever build another one.

I haven´t kept any records of how much time have I use, but I would estimate something about 300 to 400 hours:confused:

The motors are RB 35 with 1:100 gear boxes.

For measurments I´m using Norscot 1:50 14M diecast model witch I hope is accurate enought, and also I have some 14M brochures witch have some measurments. I also have many photos of it.
Sadly I havent been able to take any photos of it myself.
I wish have one in my yard witch I could take measurments and maybe do some road work also...;):)

What's its current weight?

First I made the part out of cardboard, bend it and try fit it to it´s place. Then I took the measurments of that, and made the program for the milling machine.
And it was not successful on the first time:(, I actually made a new one today, the one I show you earlier was too wide.

Weight of the grader so far is 5,5 kg

Today I made the roof side sections, witch where difficult to make.
What makes them hard to make is that the other side is straight, and the other is curvy like an airfoil. To be honest I´m not totally satisfied how they turn out:mad:, but maybe some bondo and paint will do the trick;)

Great metal work Ari...That looks as though its a very difficult shape to model..
It seems that most of the new equipment built now has a number of different shapes that make it difficult for the modeler to aquire.. Not like equip made in the 70s 80s ,90s with most panels flat and square.. Cheers lou

Very nice milling. What program are you using? I maybe in the market for a new one. I've been using Bobcad 19 for some time with my old Bridgeport with a ProtoTrak MX3 control. I got V22 but never used it because v19 was easier for me. Last week my old computer took a dive and now with windows 7 I'm having problems. The biggest one is it prints completely black pages. I had that problem with v2007 and v22 but never could fix it. Sorry to change the subject.

What a build!!:eek: Just keeps getting better with each update. Truely amazing what you can do with CNC equipment and a good Cad/Cam system. I do have a question for you: With all of the detail you are putting in this vehicle, why did you only put less than 1/2 of the number of bolts in the drive line compared to the pics you show of the real thing? I realize that it won't be seen very easily but looks like it wouldn't have been much harder to make completely prototypical???????

How did you make your circle gear and how are you planning on powering it?

Some unbelievable workmanship there.
The way you milled (engraved) and bent the brass cowling - wow!
Interesting way top offset the motors to allow central pivoting. This will lead to a slight difference in bogie/tandem loading due to torque left and right but probably not enough to cause problems.
In case the motors are not strong enough - I hear you can replace the motor with 380-sized motors, including the rather powerful Speed 400 from Graupner.

Very nice work as expected from you. On the mounting holes for the blade; On my antique Cat graders they had a tapered hole in the arms and a tapered bushing on the mold board to take up any play and overall made it much stronger. Here are some photos from my restoration in the works of a grader:
Circle with some other pieces ready for primer. The design of the circle sure hasn't changed much since 1930. I am amazed at how well the angles are bent. Cat must have employed some of the finest blacksmiths in the day:eek:

I had exactly that motor in my 1:14 grader circle rotation, connected to a 1:60 worm reduction and found it too weak. Swapped it for a Maxon motor I had lying around. This works well.
Not sure what your ratio is, probably a bit higher, so should have more oomph.

Hemi1966-this is a great model and your machine work is amazing! I have a question. Is this going to be a working model? If so, is the motor on the rotator circle strong enough to handle the digging forces of the blade or do you have a way to lock the rotating circle in position? Looking forward to more pictures.

JensR
06-03-2011, 06:36 PM
The gearbox to which the gearmotor is attached is a worm drive, which cannot be back-driven, so the circle will stay in position.

For the full-scale machines a powerful circle rotation is a major selling point, ideally you want to be able to rotate it with a full blade.

I, too, wonder whether this motor will be strong enough, after my own negative experience as a circle drive, but Hemi has a higher reduction, as far as I can see, so while slower, it should have some grunt.

modelman
06-03-2011, 07:14 PM
JensR-I know nothing about scrapers but have had some experience with gears. I see in your pic that you are using plastic gears and worm gears. I think that spells disaster. The plastic might last but worm gears are notorious for causing heat and friction. Heat and plastic gears are a bad combination in my mind. If you are not planning on working it hard it may live, but if you rotate a few times with a full load I think the plastic gears will be toast.Just my opinion!

JensR
06-03-2011, 08:25 PM
It's a grader, not a scraper ;)

Thanks for your concerns.
The speed is very slow, already before the worm drive, so heat is not an issue.
The white gear is high quality PA. Sadly, the red worm is relatively low grade plastic. As the transmission is currently pretty exposed, dirt can enter the area and that together with the rather high surface pressure between gear teeth and worm will damage the worm over time. So far it has held up very well, though and as it is much cheaper and much smaller than any alternative worm I could find, I'll simply replace it once it wears out. I am currently still in the prototyping and testing phase and will look into doing a shield to keep dirt out.
Without a lathe or mill, I had to simplify the design, but this is not an area I am worried about.

Anyway, as this is Hemi's thread, I'd suggest that if you want to discuss this further, we do that in the thread I opened about my grader. I posted my picture for Hemi to see what I was comparing and I am fully aware that Hemi's grader is in a totally different ball park. But as sizes are comparable between our machines, so should the necessary power and that's why I posted a shot of my low-tech solution.

Cheers
Jens

Also about the blade hold forces with worm gear are no problem, you cannot turn the blade by hands. As JensR also explains earlier.

I really like how you did the blade.

I had massive problems getting mine done. I tried to bend it into shape with a vice and wood blocks :-/
I thought about using a tube, but I am not sure I could cut it clean enough with my jigsaw :( Might have to build a guide for the saw? That could work...
What diameter does the tube for the blade have?
I thought something in the 100mm region would look fine, but yours seem a bit smaller? This would make it a bit cheaper...

How do you mount the blade to the rails?
I have the silly(?) problem that my screw heads are sticking out of the rounded blade surface. It seems you are mounting from the backside with tapped/threaded holes in the the blade. You'll then grind/file/cut the protruding screws to sit flush with the blade?
I've thought about doing something like that when I take apart, paint and reassemble my grader. Not sure I can do this well enough with my tools, willing to try, though =)

The outer black dots in your photo look as if they are screw heads, what are you going to do about that?

Also, your sliding mechanism seems to be aluminium on aluminium - have you thought about brass or teflon/PTFE glide shoes?

What gearing to you have on your circle rotation (excluding the motor gearbox itself)? It seems slower than my first variant, but more torque, so I'd guess around 1:120?
Your video is impressive - although we do not know the fiction coefficient of the metal/polished wood surface :D

Sorry for all these questions!

Cheers

Is the outward connection of the side shift is not outwards enough, it looks like you have only relatively little movement to the right?
In the original, the brackets sit much closer to the end of the blade.
Is this a restriction because of the hydraulic cylinder?

The movement is actually made by electric motor and spindle, and that restrict the travel. The short travel (35mm both ways) annoys me too, so I´m going to change the spindle to hydraulic cylinder.

Ah yes, that makes sense. Hydraulic will be beneficial there.
Are you going for a rotary feedthrough for the blade tilt and shift?

I use a spindle drive - it works very nicely and I get a lot of travel, but dirt is an issue. I am thinking about converting to a pull-pull winch - not sure, it's just a thought at this time. But for the high quality of your model, I feel that hydraulics is the way to go.

Ok, now I made the hydraulic cylinder for the side shift. It works much better than the earlier spindel , and it now has much more power and travel (50 mm both way).
Only drawback is that I might not be able to route the hoses inside the horizontal tube, and out in the middle:( I had to take them out straight from the nipples.

There is also a small video clip of the side shift, and if you wonder why there is a bucket in the picture, that´s because I took the hydr. pressure from my excavator;)

All seals are o-rings. Both piston and rod are sealed with two o-rings. The cylinder tube has threads in both ends, and the end caps are sealed with 3M Hydraulic Sealant HP42.
The most hardest task is to make the o-ring grooves to the cap that seals the piston rod.
My side shift cylinder has 4 mm piston rod, so you need very small tool to cut the o-ring grooves with lathe.
And of course the grooves MUST be in correct size, or they won´t hold the pressure
The picture you see here is not the side shift cylinder, it´s one I made earlier, but it´s made the same way so you get the picture.

Just made a quick calculation, and it appears the there will be 7 hydraulic functions/valves  + blade rotate control, drive motor control and all the possible electric switches (sound, lights, rotating beacon...)
It appears that I don´t have enough channels on my radio:mad:

Thanks Ari!

I take it you are happy with them, so I might consider them if I run into the limits of the plastic ones.

As for controls, I have 13 functions on my grader, more info here:
http://www.rctruckandconstruction.com/showthread.php?t=2056

I have since then added mechanical floating positions for the blade lifts. Each counts as a "on-off" channel on my transmitter.
I will try to get the 6x6 working and will add another ESC for the front wheels, with a mixer relating to the main drive.
I didn't want to spend a fortune and have looked at many ways of achieving this many controls while keeping it operational.
I have opted to go for a modified transmitter set-up, using two Turnigy 9x transmitters - more info also in the above thread. As you can see, this is rather backyards engineering, but someone with your machining skills could do some _really_ nice mounting/housing.
There's also a solder-yourself bluetooth kit from Germany that does a lot of channels: http://www.blauzahn-online.de.vu/
Not sure how good your German is?

I'm not an expert, but in my opinion having easy control of the grader is essential for operating it with fun and I had a good look at actual user interfaces and also some futuristic ones where I found patents.
I personally think that the Caterpillar M-series controls, which I adapted to my grader, are very intuitive and as your grader is a 14M, it would be a perfect fit.
Just an idea :)

Best wishes

I like how the circle side shift cylinders fits neatly even at full lift!

I notice a bit of slack when you lift the grader up, but that is admittedly a rather extreme manoeuvre!

What is the maximum clearance between the blade and the ground which you get?

Original has:
Maximum lift above ground 16.5 in
Maximum depth of cut 17.3 in

In 1:14.5 that would be 28mm and 30mm.

I have some temporary loose bolts in all of the joints in the mechanism, so most of the slack is due to those bolts.

I can get the blade 26mm off the ground, and then the center shift cylinder starts to get pinched. Downward it goes about 35mm.

I´m estimating the weight to be little over 10 kilograms, is that enough, will just have to wait the test drive results;)

I got the wheel lean cylinder done. It was very difficult task to do, due the limited space for the cylinder lenght. I use only one o-ring in the piston and in the rod seal, to get the cylinder as short as possible. It has total of 18mm stroke. It appears to be holding the pressure (15 bar)
The wheels lean a bit more to the other way, but will just have live with it:rolleyes:

Great how all the functions fit together in the tight space :)

Will be interesting to see how the steering feel is, if the stick position is proportional to steering speed and not steering position?

I got the engine compartment bigger top piece done. The piece is curved half of it´s lenght, and I was not sure how it´s going to bend cause it´s 5 mm thick.
I did mill grooves in the underside in the area that should curve to help it bend.
Then I band saw a wood block to the same curvature and place the aluminium piece between them. Next I put it to a hydraulic press and press the wood blocks together (plate between), but as I release the pressure the plate returned straight:( Then I decided to heat the aluminium plate hot and did the pressing again. I left it under pressure to cool down, and this time it did stay in correct shape:)

You don't need to make two dies. All you need is one. Take a piece of soft rubber or urethane (you can get different hardiness) Place the part on the rubber then ram the die. The rubber will conform to the die pressing the metal. This may take some practice on what hardness rubber but the end result will leave no marks on the aluminum piece. I have a long urethane die I use on my press brake that I bend painted aluminum sheet on and the die leaves no marks.
Here's a picture I found on the web of what I was describing.

Kinda off/on topic, as I'm sitting here in my cab with the radio and a/c on, it jus hit me, it would probably be cheaper(not including cost of machine) to turn this machine into remote control, everything except throttle, and on/off runs through joysticks, a 14 channel radio would cover it! But I think that would be pretty awesome, but nit sure if it would fit in my garage!

Ari, just a quick suggestion. Loosen the set screw that holds the motor to the the pump and turn it 180 degrees to the bottom. That way if there is any pump leakage it will drain out the hole and not gum up the motor. Thanks for showing us that just about anyone can build this caliber of model with just a small shop. Well Done.
