Hi guys, here's my B-train with my King Hauler/Peterbilt hauler. It's not finish yet since I want to make many changes and add many details (like tarps, not looking very realistic :( , add alu wheels, remaking rear door, etc.!). The last pictures were take after remaking cab.
It have an MFU and it can load and unload each trailers by remote. I need now to find a way to plug and unplug rear lights (ones on the "pop", it's the name we use here for the rear trailer) without hands. Actually I'm working on roof and headlights lightning.
I know there's many scale and newbies errors (when I see some art pieces in this forum I doublerealize it :o ) but I'll try to work on thems... You can see all the building process with the link following my signature, but because nearly each steps are there and because I'm really newbie, I think it's a little bit boring

ps. I apologize for my poor english knowledge, as it's not my first language :om, if I write something in a curious or inappropriate way, please tell me!

Gaetan, here is the solution to your lighting problem.

SS Tronix Wireless light kit. (http://www.ss-tronix.co.uk/)

Welcome to the board. Nice looking truck and trailers.

Thanks a lot for your comments guys, it make my day!!! :):):)

I've never seen that kind of trailer (here we call it a "rack & tarp") on other forum too but I'm surprise to hear it from you Paul (Tamiya cowboy) because I know that you're a real expert and very active builder, present and renowned on many forums! It's a kind of guarantee! :)

I already know SS-Tronix and his system is really impressive. I asked for a submission some months ago but wasn't ready at that time to spend so much money. But more I think about it, more it seems the best solution! I'll probably contact him for a complete submission soon.

For now, I'll try to connect roof lamps on the four outputs of the mfu planned for the speed indicator (3) and the original roof lamps. But I didn't make any test until now to see if these outputs can take four leds... I also ordered a relay for making a separate circuit for lightning the truck if it doens't work directly by the mfu, but i'll receive it only in ten days. :(
I'll keep you informed.

Very neat rig Gaeten!...certainly something to be proud of!:)

And your tarps look just fine to me.....heck I installed half a dozen new tarps on some of our dump trailers at work when things were slow this past winter and even the real ones have ripples no matter how well you measure and mount. I'm impressed with your folding and tucking though....you aren't gonna have to worry about your corners catching any wind rolling down the road, good job! :D

Don't worry about your speech either....you talk just fine in my book. Some folks here on this side of the border could take a lesson from your proper sentence structure and punctuation! ;) A+

Looks Great man!! Its nice to something a little different. I have 2 IR light kits from SS-tronix, and I must say that they are first class all the way. It makes for some nice scale realism! keep up the great work!

Hi everyone!
I'm a little bit surprised by all these comments! It's very rewarding, mostly from people so skilled about truck modelism! You know it's mostly a long story of trials and errors :o Thanks a lot!! :) :):)

Alex, my biggest concern about tarps are the way they fall between cradles (is it the good word? :o), it seem too ridgid (plus these riples...), but I didn't find any better stuff till now. In fact, it's real 1:1 tarping canvas :)

Tc1cat and Paul, yes my coils are homemade in three differents ways. My goal is to make three or four similars when I'll get the "good" one. The actual size reflect the normal weight for a b-train here, around 95000 pounds of loads (don't remember exactly). In this case a 50000 lbs coil on the lead and almost 45000 lbs (2 coils) on the pop, but I will try to adjust sizes and positions to approach realty when I'll build the ones I'm satisfied. Actually, the biggest one is made with a pvc tube with steel strapping rolled in each sides and a galvanize steel sheet around. It weight 7 pounds but it's not the heavier: the second is a real steel sheet one but not enough easy to roll  mainly because I was trying to do with what I had in hand at home. I suppose it must weight around 15 pounds. The first one was exactly that... the first one! The fourth should be the good one  I also heard about alu coils that could be find at gutters builders store. To follow...

Zimms customs, Yes it's foam board. Easy and rapid fit for now but they should be cut in panels and maintained with styrene holders instead of the original Tamiya. So many ideas, so little time!

And Roadranger, I think I can say that roof was a story by itself  One day maybe I'll tell you the story LOL The fenders are from a member: M.Fishersworrig who also made the sunvizor and the pipe covers. Let me salute him if he is reading this :)

Now I'm still working on my tractors lights. Headlights and rooflights. Lot of scratching head for a newbie here... And worse: I'm outside home for at least one week  But I stay tune with your works!:)

Hi eveyone !

I finally installed leds on my KH. It seems correct since everythings are working fine... Hope it will stay!
It was a little mess to put two 5mm leds and one 3mm in the PMD headlights but doesn't look so bad I think. It light a lot when you put all them on  I'll put some on air cleaner and bumper sides in the futur. Ha time, time... :o
I also made some mods on the fenders supports as the previous interfered on tires with the load on it. Next things are some tune-in on coils and trailer. Some ideas of canvas for a more "natural" looking tarp?

Thanks!

As you can guess, I try to make a replica of a friend's 1:1 Peterbilt. It's the reason for these number. There's few others to put on, so I will try to improve my method for printing them or find some already printed...

For the Bruder, I got it with a Mack and a trailer that I want to rebuild (and stretch) to adapt to my KH. Maybe I'll work on the Mack later . They are really pretty toys!

What a beautiful looking truck and trailer combination, Gaetan! It's definitely up to par with some of the best looking models I've seen on this forum. The paint on the tractor looks amazing, and I really like to see the King Haulers turned into Peterbilts. That's what Tamiya should have done from the start. This is a very, very sharp truck/trailer combination. I like the coiled steel load as well. I work at a local manufacturer, and we recieve countless coils of steel every day. I've always been a little fasinated by some of the trucks that deliver them. Your's definitely looks the part.

Hi everyones!
Many thanks for your comments ! It's an honour, despite I think it's really overrated :o, to be compare to the greats builders here! It's my first building and I can't tell how this forum is a great source of infos and knowledge :).

Espeefan: Thank you! I'm very glad to see that you like it! Comments from a builder of your grade are very rewarding! I'm working as operator (and occasionally overhead crankman...) in a galvanizing steel plant. That's where I took my inspiration ;). And I agree with you about the King Hauler as a Peterbilt: it should be that from the start!
I foresee many improvements for the next weeks (steel wheels, some details, wireless connexions (already ordered from Ss-tronix, etc.)) but I'm clearly not fast as most builders here! And the way I took to put add-on after the construction is not a time saving one!

Grumpygrady: You can see many (too many?) pictures of the building here: http://s1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa409/B-TrainHauler/RC%20Camion/ but most of the add-on parts were not made by me :o. Unfortunatly, there's no picture of the coils' making but I explained basically how I did it in answer #16 of this topic. Feel free to ask if I can help you otherway ;).

Hi everyone! It takes a long time but I finally find some times to put on my truck! I received my SS-Tronix wireless kit many weeks ago but last months were not the best time for me to put on it... :(

About the kit itself, it's very very professionnal! Everythings are well explained and the packaging and the kit itself looks very well made. And most of all, it works like a charm!

Here's some pictures of the first part of the installation in the truck itself. Some of the installation of the trailers' parts should follow  I also make a little movie of a setup I've done for testing. I'll put it here after some works on it ;)

I patiently, with perseverance, learn to make vids... Not the results I have in my mind when I make it (lol), but was funny to do!
The wireless system works perfectly and was relatively easy to install, "relatively" mostly because I don't have a standard setup, but really "plug&play" and very well build. A very good quality product in my opinion.
I agree that most (I'm part of it) consider that trucking and country live well together! Even if I'm not a real country fan, I think the rythm and most of the themes perfectly fit with the mind. And I'm a fan of The Band...

Thanks guys! I'm happy you like it!

I like your signature Claus, I agree with you!

Bigdogrod, the kit from Sstronix is the wireless "module" added to the Tamiya mfu for connecting my two trailers without any wires between them. When installed, it works exactly the same way than before. It's also a power source for adding lights either on tractor (with add-on interface) or trailers.
The module itself is relatively small compare to mfu but the require place must be verify if you don't have space in your cab...
Did I answer your question? Don't hesitate if it's not :o

But I dont't think that "first attempt" is exactly the real term :D, I scrapped a couple of them in the learning process ;).
The ones on the last picture are not polished except the third, althought I'm not sure it makes a big difference on the picture. There's one after some polishing.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa409/B-TrainHauler/RC%20Camion/DSC_0002-2.jpg

I used some type of littles abrasives sponges to obtain the finish (from 400 to 1400) on the first picture, and an silver polish named Sylvo on this one, but I'm not sure it's a good way... Maybe someone know?

Goose19
02-02-2012, 12:16 AM
go at them the same way you would on your 1:1. when I worked in an aluminum fab shop, we sanded with 1500 grit sandpaper, then used autosol for a cutting polish.(you can get a quart for under $50 at most truck stops). then go over it with a finishing polish, one with no grit in it. canadian tire stuff would work.
what did you use to make them, just a lathe?

very nice work!

B-Train Hauler
02-02-2012, 10:02 AM
Thanks Goose19,
I also used a CNC mill to made them
So many things to know, althought it's a relatively easy design...
But As I said, I have many others to do to complete all my rig and to date each one is better than the last, so they will move to the rear as better ones will be produced, keeping the best ones for the truck itself.

Gun, Thanks! I was completely newbie when I started that build but completely addicted since that. It explain for a part that long sequence of build/unbuild... and some scales errors too :o But with time and the ideas found here, it's coming not too bad...
Also thanks to you Borenson, let me see what to do with that grill (effectively, it must be update ;)).
Ih, your loader is a piece of art! I'm out of the forum sometimes and I missed the "discussion" about your axles ;) I stay tuned now :)

Hi everyone!
I don't have big changes on my truck these last months, mostly because acquiring machining skills took most of my hobby times!
But just to say that I'm still there, there's some pics of my lasts evolutions. It's only a preassembly, many thing must be rearranged (alu sidings don't look as I want, for example ), but it show how I want it to look.
I'm stuck for at least two weeks now since I broke my belt lathe, while I was machining my new tanks
Last things I added were rear wheels of the tractor, the steps and air tanks, strech a bit the wheel base, the rear frame parts and bumber, and the fuel tanks I'm working on actually. The alu siding will be change for a better look and a better adjustment.

Yes Dabears, I made the tapered ends. I considered first to use the Knight Hauler ones (in plastic), and finally made them in alu for a better support of the rear shocks... A new paint job of the frame should be done soon, including these parts (except the light plate for sure ;)).

As you know it's my first build and I learn each days, so it's a great pleasure to receive your comments!
Next steps should be a new exhaust cover, new frame paint and a first real mounting of new parts on it.
Swagger, milling is really a great world to discover, but it's also (well... for me, at least ;)) some challenge... Don't hesistate if you have any question ! Not necessarely easy, but rewarding if your goal is to make specifics things you want...

Thanks B-Train! I would need a workshop and money before I could even consider a mill though, but someday, I would love to get one. I did engineering many years ago in school and was pretty handy with a lathe and mill back then, so hopefully, some of that would come back over time.

Hi guys,
No big news here, just to let you know the latest moves. The truck is dismantled now for frame painting.
I take that occasion for remaking the back door, (didn't like the old one...) add an alu frame on the window and bars beside:

It's a Knight hauler sun roof window. It's the right size for that use but I have some doubt about his light round form. But I think it will be good when glued...

Hi Dabears,
I don't remember exactly how it was connected. I tried to verify directly but it's not easy to see ;). I'll try to find if I took notes about the wiring and if it's not I'll check it deeper.
What I can say is that I used two connectors, so I connected seven leds on one and six on the other. Each ones are connected on the mfu with the roof light plug and the speed indicator plug. The speed indicator is desactivate by the control panel.
The leds are connected in seried and parallels, but I can't remember exactly how and because the wires are almost all black, I have to dismantled tie-wraps (not a very clean installation...) to see the wiring way... If it's possible, it will be easier with my notes...

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa409/B-TrainHauler/Photos%20reduites%20800%20x%20600/DSC_0003.jpg

Another thing I want to say is that I'm not sure about the safety of this wiring way, but it work well for me till now! The best way is to use a relay (I can give you a specific model) ans a separate battery...

I'll try to give you more infos asap.

dabears
06-26-2012, 03:44 PM
Ok cool don't worry about taking all apart... I can test the output voltage of the mfu to find my forward voltage and wire accordingly.. Thank you for the pics it does help alot!

B-Train Hauler
06-26-2012, 04:37 PM
Good... I'll probably take advantage of dismantling for taking notes on the wiring for myself if I don't find my own notes... Can be usefull! Just be aware of on thing I see: Voltage on the mfu output seems to fluctuate, like if it have internal resistors...
I'll keep you inform anyway!

Thanks Crewcab59!
Primer job is done on frame but my I broke my airbrush fitting while preparing things for painting red! Don' have time to get a new one, so I tried do "repair" it... Hope it will work... :(

Dabears, here's the way I think I configured my roof light (pdf joined). I can't be sure because I didn't note the polarity on wires and I'm not good enough with electronic to assure there's no other logical way... But it's the real wiring, with 8 leds on a connector and 5 on the other. Worked well for me till now, but not sure it doesn't have bad effects on circuitry or leds... Take care. A better way should be using a separate circuit with a servo switch like this one: http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-PICOSW1.html.
Hope it help!

I think your way for mounting fenders seems better ;), because it doesn't put any stress on the spring movement, although I considered it in my installation.
This forum is a wonderful place to learn! :)

dabears
07-12-2012, 09:22 PM
I tried mine the way you did yours but my fenders have no play in them being hard plastic so with the suspension flex it put a lot of stress on the fenders or i would have done it the same as you. love your truck!! cant wait to see more

B-Train Hauler
07-12-2012, 10:57 PM
I see what you mean but there's another reason to prefer your way. Mines have some flex between them instead of yours and it's relatively ok about the stress between them, but after a while some misalignment appear. Not so bad and not so fast, but your way should eliminate that too. A change is really considered here... another item in the todo list :)

PS Love your your globe & lowboy set too! :D

I agree, I suppose that will be a great rig in some twenty-five years :D Seriously, thank's a lot. It's effectively a long build, and a long thread (I'm a very slow builder, too much to learn :-)), but I think the end is near now... Not more than two or three years ;)
