Well here is a few pic.s of my 1st custom build in progress:

(I know it is a pretty "simple" build, for most of U all....) ;)

For me it means working with Styrene for the first time, custom made parts, & A BUNCH of research with a tangled mess of 50-questions!! LOL!!

Here goes:

1st mock-up minus the CORRECT rails(Freddy's cutting them now)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_1989.jpg

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2059.jpg

My rendition of a headache rack:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2060.jpg

And because I'm STILL waiting for Tamiya to re-label (primer)
some 1st's @ styrene work:

(was a rainy day today.... took a trip to the local hobbyshop to do some Man-Shoppin'!! Loaded up with everything needed to work styrene) I also have a batch coming from Travis, ...OH BTW... his prices are KILLER!! Our local HS had .080 6"x11" for $6.99!!! Anyway....

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2956.jpg

This back-side cover is cut but I'm still waiting on 1 more 10 LED strobe array then I will drill and hide wires inside. (Batt. for this will be hidden in deck frame.)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2957.jpg

I used KH rails for the deck frame, there 4" longer than the R620 stock rails and fit the build better. I made a couple cross-members for this out of 1/4 solid Delrin rod.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2958.jpg

rockNmayhem will B making the screw-drive for the role-back just as soon as I get him some good measurements.
I cut a "cover" for these rails from .30 styrene.(didn't like all the factory holes showing) will put on much later.

My uncle works for PPG so I have him chasing the code for my paint choice, he is going to make a few rattle cans for me. It is Scania's Limited Edition Black Amber, I like to think of it as ........ Root Beer...:D:D

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/scaniapaint3.jpg

All in all ........ here is my 1st synopsis,
*** Styrene and the designing is very cool!!

*** Green putty dries REALLY fast!!

*** this big-truck R/C thing is NOT cheap .. ;) but darn

*** Tamiya takes WAY to long to re-label(2 month's now)

*** And last but not least.......

*** Ask questions.... the un-knowing is EXPENSIVE :o :D

It will be 37 1/2 in. This is end-to-end, not wheelbase.

Update for tonight:

(SORRY guy's... kinda psyched about this 1st build):rolleyes:

some more finish work/trim on light bar/arch. That tiny I-beam stuff is pretty cool, I trimmed out the arch in it.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2956-1.jpg

and my strobe light array (roughed in)

I am staring @ it .. thinking .. "I" built/designed that!!!!!
I can actually do this... ??
Tomorrow will be a big sand/fill/sand again to get it looking somewhat better...
For tonight I am done and turning in pretty proud of myself!!(such a sap!!);)

You should be proud of yourself, it is looking pretty good.

Is that a sticker for the diamond plate?

Thanks Zimm!!

Yes it is (www.mactac.com)

It is pretty realistic looking...

Got another question for ya all:

What do you guy's usually use for a motor? I see most of you use a crawler motor and I have had plenti of crawlers but was just wondering if there was a "prefered" motor and gear ratio for these rigs?

I was thinking of trying a INTEGY 35T but thought it might be to "quick"? I was guessing a 55T but wanted to see what the pro's preferred?

Thanks all!!;)

I use a 55turn and 4:1 gear reduction with stock pinion. Other members us 55turn and a 6 tooth pinion which is about the same as the 4:1 and stock pinion. I was using the Novak Rooster crawler, fifty five combo but since the quit making the fifty five they now use the Terra crawl 55 in the combo but the Terra crawl is a sealed bushing motor so now I guess I will use the integy 55 with the Rooster crawler ESC.

Thanks Travis!!

The 55T/6T sounds easy enough for me!! LOL!!

1 more question:

is Tamiya's gear pitch 48?

fhhhstix
05-16-2011, 08:58 PM
It should be 32.

MIKEY! HURRY UP! I can't wait to see this mammoth come to life.
Now I have a question for you. Are you sure this is your first build?:p;)
Look's pretty good so far, and keep up the good work.
And btw, I love the color choice...root beer... float?:D:D

I can't wait either!!!

There is so much to do!! Waiting for parts and paint is tough!!

This is the first, but thanks for the vote of confidence!!:D

Tonight I finished the light bars and primed and painted them, just need to build a batt. box for them and finish soldering the switches(on/off & momentary). The rails should be here by the middle of next week so it should move pretty quickly after that?
I just ordered the motor and pinion.

Looking good there mate, you are making good use of a normally somewhat boring Scania (IMO). It's good to see one stretched out, I don't quite fancy the original 2 axle design.

Can I ask where you obtained those nice scale jack stands ?

mikeymagz
05-17-2011, 03:32 AM
My 2 fav.'s are the Scania's & Aeromax.....

Here is a link to the jack stands,

@Travis: It appears that Novak has discontinued the familiar 45 and 55 turn. This seems to be its replacement http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/part_number=35X7/135.0.1.1 I use the Novak 55 turn and 6 tooth pinion, so far the results are good, I also have a Holmes 65 turn and 6 tooth, so much torque.....Thanks to Tamiya Cowboy, saved some pounds on Gru's :-)

Can you link where to get the 6 tooth pinion from? I have a 55 turn motor for my build, but don't know where to get the pinion. I saw someone mention PMD but was unable to locate it there... Your help is appreciated...

Awesome! Thanks. So the 6 Tooth 32 Pitch Hardened Steel Pinion Gear is what I want? Or do I want the 6 Tooth 32 Pitch Hardened Steel Long Pinion Gear? Should I get more than one? Sorry for all the questions - thanks for the help.

Tamiya Cowboy

You want the short not the long and even with the short you will need a spacer to space the motor back a little. As the pnions are tapered a little at the back.

started some more detail work and almost have the light bar done. (light bar needs touch-up/trim painting and wires run to batt. and switch)

And started on the flatbed controls. 1 more fill n sand, then primer and silver.w/black knobs.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2956-2.jpg

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2957-2.jpg

and the controls:

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2959.jpg

the controls house the 9V for strobe power, soldering wires now. But need to find a handy place for mounting switch? Don't want it obvious..

CrimsonCorsair
05-18-2011, 08:17 AM
one of the controls mounted on a micro switch?

mikeymagz
05-18-2011, 09:00 AM
That is a perfect idea;)

I am going to cut box & make it deeper for switch. Going to use center lever, that will be easiest to mod.

Plus it is a great way to plum all the wires to 1 spot!!

Got Freddies rails in on Fri. and all his work was FANTASTIC!!

A "THANK YOU" going out to him!!

Had a few hours this weekend to get a bit more progress, it is starting to look like something now!! Realized today... this thing is l-o-n-g!!

..... AND.... all that work on the light bar was kinda for nothing.... it looks WAY to low and out of scale compared to the height/size of cab!! (see last pic.)

I just ordered a whole bunch of various sized square stock and round stock styrene, gonna build a new one better sized once all that material gets here.

Let me know what you guy's think so far..... ??

got a couple more pics:

Some more progress, but I'm used to painting a body w/one rattler and having extra for the next one....
This build has 3 4oz. rattlers ALREADY and I just ordered 3 more! I thought for sure 3 would be enough!!?? (obvious newb mistake)
I have to lay a few coats on cab and the back of a few parts PLUS the running boards and fenders .. still!!

Anyway, here's a few(if you can see the trans. in finish clear coat(testing waters there) you can see the real finished color on it.

Lovely build.... now get rid of them holes in the side.

mikeymagz
06-03-2011, 08:56 AM
Right now it looks as if it was a rust primer, it REALLY "pops" with clear!!

I got the steering/shift linkage all set last night & cut down the RC4WD shafts for driveline.
I put steering servo in place of shift servo location and then bent my own pitman arm.
I used the steering bellcrank & mounted it on the right side of chassis and bent my own linkage for the shift servo.

Spent a bunch of time building another arch for strobes......

scrapping that one too!! Looks way to tall on deck because the deck is so long and narrow! It even comes in level with top of cab, just going to continue on and look @ another way later. To fustrated to try again right now!!

Wed. the rest of my paint should be here? Maybe finish up cab this week and paint the chassis??

Here is some update pics. with a (bordum-breaker build ) ......

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2987.jpg

Had gotten board building and painting this Scania so I picked up a Aeromax
and changed my "view" for a bit. ;)

It is going to be themed after John Deere, pinstriping in yellow and vinyl logo decals are next.(wife is cutting them on the plotter as we speak!!:D)
I ordered the box trailer and this will follow in J D theme as well. (be here in a week):cool::cool:
I just used a 55T motor 6T pinion full set of bearings, stainless hardware(-shoulder bolts) & punisher shafts. Basic stock build..
BTW........ the RC4WD part # Z-S0232 or link : http://store.rc4wd.com/Punisher-Shaft-Drive-Cup_p_1084.html drive yolk works perfectly in between drive axles!! No more need to shorten or modify!!! :) And there reasonable too!

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii74/mikeymagzpics/IMG_2988.jpg

Here is some more on the Scania, paint/primer is close to being completed... I had my break so now it is back to finishing this build...
Chassis is done, flatbed is 90% and drive-line needs paint. Cab is almost there too..
