I made this up today, it is no done yet though. I ordered flanged bearings for it and I have to make nice stand offs for it but, it actually works as is.

I made a cover for it. I will use some clear silicone to seal it up when I get the bearings installed:

Hi Scott this is fantastic, well thought out and has a lot of protential for 6x6 users. Can you please tell me where you bought the gears from. This is what I have been searching for. All I need to do now is find a way to disconnect the front drive.

Thanks for your info Scott, I just ordered this morning from RC4WD a disconect unit and some gears so I will play around with it when they arrive. All part of the enjoyment I suppose.

You can find all of the gears on ebay. I used 32 pitch.

I used two 18 tooth pinion gears (5mm bore)

and one 22 tooth pinion gear
http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-E-Maxx-22t-Steel-32p-Pinion-Gear-5mm-Bore-/200511525342?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories

The size of the center gear will not change the ratio as long as the 2 outside gears are the same. So, you could run a 28t 32p gear for the idler gear and that would lower the final output shaft a little.

28t 32pitch 5mm bore gear:

Scott , Your right till you get to "would lower the final output shaft a little." It dose not matter what size Idler gear as long as the input and output are the same you would not change the ratio . Now If you are referring to changing the out put to a 28 tooth then yes you would lower the ratio. All Idler gears do is keep the output same rotation as the input . But very good Idea as the same for willy ( custom rc models ).

Steve, When I said "would lower the final output shaft a little." I meant lower the height of the output shaft ;)not the ratio.

I think the extra axel driving will make climbing steep grades much more easier.

You are welcome Bob but, I wouldn't recommend doing this conversion unless you have the time and tools because an axial trans or an f-350 trans would be a lot easier.

It probably took me 6 or 7 hours to make this but, every time a drive it I will be rewarded that I made it myself. It should sound really cool when it is done because there 8 gears driving against each other from the motor shaft to the final output shaft and there are 2 sets of those gears in metal cases, the hpi GRU and the GRU I made.

No offense taken Steve!:)

I'm always jealous when I see someone who has the talent to make somthing like this instead of buying it. Nice Job!
