I have always wanted to build one of these and now I have a chance to do it. One of the members here already had most of the parts and asked me if I would build him one and I agreed to do it. This way I get to satisfy my urge and not cost me any money.:D For right now the bed is a piece of 1/4 in lexan for mock up that way I will have all the bugs worked out and ready for the machined aluminum bed when it gets here. For this build the customer has provided an MFU, trailer light kit to add turn and brake lights to the light bar, and I will build a flashing led unit for the center of the light bar. Well here are the pics so far.

Lookin like a good start Travis. I've always thought it would be great to make a roll back hauler but have never found a good way to do the bed. Can't wait to see what you come up with for this build. I'm sure it will be great.

Travis, the truck and center caps look really nice, good work.

Thanks Doug I am glad you like them.

i really like the center caps on your back wheels :) where'd u get those?

They are real simple and easy to do. The caps are just snap caps epoxied to axial hub nuts used on the ax10. Link to axial caps (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWDK4&P=**Missing Data**) To do this you need to replace the thick lock nut that holds the wheels on with a regular thin 5mm nut using some loctite. By doing that you will expose more axle shaft threads for the axial hub nut to screw on to. The axial hub nut would probably be enough to lock the other nut from coming off but I put loctite on just to be safe.

Here are some pics of today's progress. New chassis done, cab painted, and a good start on the bed lift and slide mechanism. :D

Thanks for the comment guys much appreciated. Apparently not to well liked over on scale4X4. Until I voted it had a three star rating and that is just sad I am building the truck Doug & Travis wanted which I think is a great idea and will be a fantastic looking truck. Any how here are some pics of the cab now that I have buffed it out. Not perfect but I think it looks pretty good.

hi can you send me info & pixs on the roll back bed please. i have been wanting to do one like this for a while
cheers paul

fhhhstix
07-09-2011, 10:11 PM
Here you go TINY-TRUCKER there are two screw drives one on the truck to make the bed go up and down. It raises the hinged block at the back which is also the block that the bed slides on. This set up is similar to the screw drives used in my dump trucks just not as much movement needed. The second screw drive is in the bed it's self and since the block is mounted to the truck the screw drive is moving the bed instead of the block like in a dump truck screw drive. The wires for the screw drive are fastened solid to the front of the bed and are pulled back to the center of the bed by a spring holding them tight when the bed is in the down position. as the bed rises the spring keeps tension on the wires and then the bed will travel back release the tension and the bed can then pull the wires back. With this set up there is plenty of wire for full travel of the bed. Here are the pics.

Today I striped down the frame and painted it. I also started adding the trim pieces and MFU lighting to the cab. This is going to be interesting stuffing the MFU, the speed controller and dual switch for the screw drives, and the light unit for the light bar in this cab. This cab has also had the hood height and grill shortened, Tamiya Cowboy did the hood mod and sold it as a Freightliner Columbia then I cut the sleeper off for the day cab look. With the hood shortened I have no extra room there so it makes things even more difficult. I still have to figure out where to put the batteries, I have an idea just hope it works. Here are some pics of today's progress.

well here is an update and we are almost done just have to finish the headache rack for the bed. Here are some pics. Two of the pics are of the inside of the cab so you can see what an MFU looks like stuffed into a day cab mainly so Doug and Travis would not have to take the cab off just to see what it looked like inside and the third is a pic of the finished cab with bumper and mirrors.

fhhhstix
07-31-2011, 12:22 PM
The light bar lens was bought from a member here and I added the trailer light kit to it and made a four led flasher unit for the center of it. The base of the light bar is made of ABS plastic bent into a 90 and I screwed the lens to it then servo taped it to the cab so it could be removed easily if the customer wanted to change it.
