It looks like you've operated one of these before, pretty smooth, not much track bounce.

I'm using a Servonaut S20 speed control on the swing. What's nifty about how it works is that it somewhat ramps up the speed & down again so the start/stops aren't so sharp, I'm not shocking the geartrain. It'll help to reduce gear wear to keep your tolerances tight. It's alot of mass that you're swinging, especially if you're not level & stop abruptly on a downward arc.

Depending on the radio you're using, you could probably program your expotential for smoother start/stops too.

pigeonfarmboy
11-15-2011, 11:48 PM
I believe this is the first time I've operated an excavator. The big issue I had was how much I was pushing down with the boom as seen in the video. Getting used to the controls too, once I have those down it will be smooth sailing. I can't remember the esc on the swing. I think it's a Schulze unit. It does ramp up and down but will stop abruptly if you stop the sticks too fast. A good point about gear wear. I will program in some curve to slow her down some.

What are your thoughts on the plastic track links Joe? I assumed they were metal and was a little disappointed when I received the model. I've pulled them off a couple times going over some rough terrain (way above what it should be operated on)

Azonic
11-16-2011, 01:57 AM
I had the same feelings as you about the tracks, i also thought they were metal ones, but i had no issues with them breaking or some serious wear and i run on very hard garvel ground with lots of small rocks and i see minimal wear so far.

I actually asked a CNC guy over on a swedish board how much he wanted to make aluminium track plates for me, he said around $1200 for the compleate bits, if make them in stainless steel he said "double that price"! :)

Are you, Joe intrested in getting some metaltracks maybe i could talk to him again and see if hes up for the task?

Its alot of money but the coolness factor would go way up! :)

pigeonfarmboy

Stainless would be awesome. I'm about to start taking some machining classes so I'm going to see if I can't do something about it myself ;)

Lil Giants
11-16-2011, 07:31 AM
Previously, my tracks only made a few revolutions before smoking a Sabertooth 2x12, then when I got a 2x25 smoked one of the motors. So my tracks have virtually zero wear to date! lol

And being that my tracks have turned very little, I was surprise to see some of the friction fit wrist pins have moved 2-4mm or so one way or the other. I wonder if I dribble a bit of blue locktite around each pin if that'll keep them from moving?

Kalle, when you say $1200, is that USD? Aluminum would never last under the weight of this model, too soft. And $2400 for SS is nearly half the price of the entire model!!!

I'll be doing lots of twisting & turning carving down the remaining part of the south wall, that'll be a good test for the durability of the tracks. ;)

If you find you're skipping a track often PFB, then you may need to tighten them up. Tap out a wrist pin to seperate a track, the idler just pulls out. Using a 7mm deep socket, screw out the locknut till you have about 2mm thread showing with your spring in place. That's where I set mine to just now, there's still a wee bit of give there yet, but hopefully not enough to let a track slip off the idler.

Yes that is usd, thats about how much it would cost to get them done, i also thought that alu. would be to soft but wouldnt the alu be harder then the plastic ones?

He also suggested ductile iron as a cheaper alternative but he said it easly rusts and probably wont last long, powdercoat?

Yes for stainless it would double the machining time and so the cost, so its not worth it as long as i wont win on the lottery! :)

Braved the heat last night/this morning to some work on the dollies.

After some brain-storming with Izzy and Trav I used the RCP Crawlers TLT Straight Axle Adapters and cut off the ears. Cut down they offer the perfect spacing for the tire/wheel from the side plate of the dolly.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7130/7481085906_9d9f4bae73_z.jpg

Cut up a washer for work holding and space for the drill
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/7481091060_a5ac4e3223_c.jpg

Had to turn the taper for the inside of the washer. (Zinc machines like sh*t) Here it is all mounted up to the dolly. A TLT axle fits inside and I'm using the tamiya brass bushings.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7481099066_ea4a84fba1_c.jpg

The 2.2 ZXLs I ordered are way too big. Might go with the 1.9s. (the 2.2s are just going to have to be used on a future build..... ;) )
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8026/7481094064_03d7b1f2fb_c.jpg

Spacing. I may take a bit more off the TLT adapter so it sits closer to the plate.

This has been a good project to learn the ways around my new Taig machines. That machining class definitely helped me troubleshoot obstacles in clamping and indicating parts for better precision. I've never used a rotary table or 4-jaw chuck before. It's time consuming to setup, but it's a great sense of accomplishment for me knowing how to quickly and easily set them up now. Time to let my ideas and drawings become real objects! Very excited.

He'll be fine for a once in awhile pull around but for a every day use you might want to beef up the 5th wheel plate . With Nate's set up he only has statically 40 # on the truck . It's the dynamic loading you need to worry about whereas , I highly doubt you will be pulling it around on uneven ground/roads at a high rate of speed ;) Joe's D10 pulls real well on wheels but try to drag it hitched to the 5th wheel (not that we would ) looks good Nate , now I wana see a vid :D

Joe's D9 is about 80lbs.

Nate, it'd be interesting to know what amount weight would it be at the bucket with the rear of the tracks resting on the dollies, could you weigh it on a bathroom scale?

What do you think of a tri axle jeep to spread the load? Your trk with Russisloud's simulated air ride suspension, a load such as this would certainly test its limits! :D

I disagree. I could cake this thing in dirt, never clean it, and it still won't look like a full-scale machine. The body is made of fiberglass, that won't rust. Even if you "leave it be" you gotta transport it somehow. Fingerprints don't look so hot on a scale model.

Nate your welding on that bucket looks great. It takes lots of practice and usually many years to achieve the quality of weld you have there. Will definitely be waiting for the next pics of that bucket.

Started on V2 of the dolly system today:

Nope, not a 4cyl. model engine ;)

Just like the last version, I'm modifying an RCP Crawlers TLT Straight Axle adapter so I can service the outer section easily. This time it will mount cleaner to the frame via screws.

The axle housing will mount to the plate with counter-sunk screws and then the plate will bolt to the frame. Probably hex heads to make it look 1:1.

Bolted up to the wheel

Went with 2.2s this time. After looking at the video closer, the 1.9s were too small.

Who needs a laser/water jet? Bandsaw, grinder, and file son! (Except for that whole need to make 3 more part :( )

Nice machining! Is the frame of the dolly CNC machined or cut with a bandsaw and polished on the edges? What kind of mill do you have?

First piece pictured is bandsaw/grinder/belt sander/filed. I cheated on the next three and used the plasma torch. All of them are cut and finished. Just need to weld standoffs in place to get the 2.5" spacing. Going to figure out a different method for tire support this time. I like RCP's idea with his Kenworth tire inserts. Wrapping around like I did last time definitely made a small bump in the tire.

Got the new dollies finished up. I lost track of how much time I have in these. Well over 20-30 hours. The first versions I didn't spend as much time in the preplanning as I did on these. The fit on this pair are **** near perfect and look much better on the excavator with the 2.2 wheels/tires. (Sorry I didn't get more photos of the build process. I'm in Indy rush mode to get everything done before the show)

Milled slots in the bottom of the uprights and dropped in and tig welded the rods in place. Used some plates to keep the uprights spaced correctly while in the vise.

Next was cutting new inserts for the tires to support the weight of the 850D. This dense foam stacked inside the tire should do the trick. That's a special tool made by Olfa for cutting out lexan body wheel wells.
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/9543490618_834882e8e0_b.jpg

All the foam cutout it's time to assemble the beadlocks.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/9543487344_21f79e1e28_b.jpg

All assembled and painted up. Wheels will be painted black or grey another time.

Also got the new buckets welded up and ready for paint tomorrow.

Wow, those buckets and the dollies turned out beautiful. I'm not a professional welder, but your welds look really good. Nice work.

The buckets look great...

On the mounts, are they just tacked on? ... Sorry the engineer in me just had to comment. :-)

Yup just tacked. I ran out of tig gas so after the photo I went over to the mig to finish it up.

Dolly system didn't work. Back to the drawing board. Need to get more weight further back or get the top bar to lock into the cradle better. Front section was dragging on the ground. The tire inserts held the weight just fine though. I suppose this is what happens when you guess on the geometry haha!

On the other hand, the big bucket was awesome for Indy rubber!

The mig welding I've done on my buckets don't look that bad now, eh Nate? :p

I ran out of tig gas before I got to the mounts so that's all mig in there. I can always grind them down I suppose.

Finally was able to get my stuff out of storage from the fire and tear into this thing. Body was heavily damaged but I've got the new raw body from JDH ready for paint.

Haven't tested the electronics yet but there's no visual damage. Looks like all I'll have to replace is the hydraulic lines from the splitter to the arm cylinders. Those were melted in spots so I'm sure the fluid was cooked pretty good. Anyone know a source on this side of the pond for those lines? I believe they're the 6mm lines but I forgot to measure last night.

Gardentrucking.com sells 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm hydraulic tubing for about $2 a foot and RC4WD sells 2.0 mm tubing about 40" long for $17 but I didn't see any 6mm anywhere.

For reference:
Smaller hydraulic line for the boom/stick/bucket cylinders uses the following:
Parker PA 12-PHL DIN 74324
Size is 4mm OD x 2.7mm ID x 0.65mm Thickness

Can't seem to find any retailers state-side that carry the Parker. I found this stuff on Mcmaster Carr today and will report back if it works well:

OHH!!! I can help! I am about to order this

http://www.grainger.com/product/PARKER-Tubing-2VKR2?s_pp=false

for my LR 634, it's close enough to 3mm OD.

You might find your size on there. Good luck!

That tubing works great and is the same stiffness as what the excavator was supplied with.
