I'll start this thread to show what I am doing currently and splice the other one when I get it caught up to date later this winter. ;)

Been having some rainy days again, so can't do much on the farm and can't haul out of the basement either... the holding area atop the south wall seemed like a good idea last winter, but when it came time to haul out, not alot of space for a loader or excav to load trucks. So time for some more digging! Measured down 10 inches and cut straight across.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Dec%2021%202009/IMG_0168.jpg

I swept the majority of the dirt lumps off by hand, but for kicks I brought in the equip to tidy up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Dec%2021%202009/IMG_0174.jpg

Now I'll have plenty of 'headroom' for the equip and I'll be able to sit down while loading a truck... my lower back just kills me if I stand in the same spot for more than a minute.

Joe, I bet that air chisel makes you work a lot easier.

I know what you mean about the back, mines shot.

Lil Giants
09-04-2010, 01:23 AM
Yeah, the air chisel is a big improvement over the pic axe, more controlled digging without dirt flying everywhere!

I ruined my back with custom grain hauling ten - fifteen yrs ago, too many little bins & shoveling 42mt at a crack!

Showers started last Sat nite thru till Wed, a couple days sun & now they're talking more cloud & rain for next wk starting Sun... I hired a high clearance Case IH S/P sprayer today to desicate my durum, 7-10 days from now (depending on weather) to maybe start combining. My tractor/sprayer, I cruze about 6-9mph & think I'm flying at times doing 250 acres to a fill in 2.5 to 3 hrs. This S/P cruzes 18mph (he's got a buddy seat, I rode along) what a smoooooth ride and great view! 200acres done in just over an hr! He sprayed 800 acres for me in about 7 hrs, including fill time & some road miles... that would take me the better part of two days with my outfit... if I had 300 grand to spend freely ---- hmmmm sweet machine :)

It varies every yr Henry, this yr has been quite cool & wet, it's been getting close to freezing many times in the last few wks, that would really screw shyt up if it freezes within the next two to three wks.

Thanx Martin... started drizzling this afternoon & tomorrow don't look good either... probably have some updates to show in the next few days (& get back on topic lol).

Making it bigger Ace. ;)

There's a local guy here all growing season Chris, I see him (or more specifically "hear him") go out everyday (thank God I live nine miles from the airport, town ppl sure complain about the 5am WAKE UP everyday lol). He's two dollars an acre more and likely wouldn't come exactly when I want him too, he's booked up all the time. The durum that was desicated, it's all in fenced land, the cows will get what the S/P tramps... and durum aint worth f/k all anyway... what a joke for a price compared to two yrs ago.

Cheers Cossett :chug:

Good to see your return Kevin, the patch is letting up some so you have time for hobbies again?

I've been tinkering a few days a week in the quarry the last couple wks, tidying up the last of the loose soil from the sw corner (above photos), then I'll be back to digging in the crawl space again.

My winter storage area is filling up quickly, as winter weather has been here nearly two wks already and I didn't have the chance beforehand to completely haul everything out... what a bytch of yr for wet weather, set new records of 26 inches rainfall from April - October. What little the sun did shine, I was busy with the farm... I still have a couple hundred bales to pick, but not going to do it @ -25!

White trk was on the bench last wkend, R&R broken and worn parts. I've never broke an inter-axle driveshaft before. lol

The record for fastest shipment is 2.5 days from Ireland, I bought my WA500 2nd hand. Getting anything from the states is absolutely ridiculous, it always takes forever. The last time I ordered from Stahl in Germany, took about eight days.

Yeah, the Stahl adt has been working exceptionally well, I just need to get a better radio for it. I'm looking at these Spektrum 2.4mhz, maybe that'll correct some of the glitching issues I am having with some of these FM controlled models.

Definitely looking forward to putting together this JD850 excavator. For those not familiar with this model, it's an approx 100mt sized hoe and here's a couple of build threads from skilled craftsmen who have added alot of details to the model kit by their own hand.

The 850 arrived late yesterday afternoon and boy oh boy was the box beat up & in tathers! Is FedEx normally that wreckless?!

I got some damage on the boom & stick... I wonder what this material is that's formed around the steel framework & how am I going to repair it? That's about all I see for damage so far. It was a bunch of small boxes within one big box and the undercarriage box was in bad shape too! I guess I'll have to assemble it 1st to see if there isn't any distortion.

It really pizzes me off how much I get hammered for shipping and my goods arrive to me like this!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Dec%2021%202009/IMG_0194.jpg

Hello Daniel,

50/50, the cereals didn't fair too well for quality and are going to be tough to market. The oil seeds, flax & brown mustard, xllnt yields & quality. Brown mustard prices are rather flat & it may be a yr or two till they improve & I sell, but flax is the money crop this yr & it'll pull my butt out of the fire & allow me to farm another yr... wish I had grown more acres of it. :D

I'd seen that 2nd vid last wk while searching thru yt for something "rc jaw crusher". That one looks mass produced, have you seen it for sale anywhere? The model looks like it's plastic construction and probably not very robust. I wonder material they are putting thru it in the vids?

Lil Giants
11-28-2010, 07:06 AM
It was package well, lots of bubble wrap, foam and packing cardboard throughout, but the big box, the cardboard was too thin. I sent Vario Germany a kind email showing the damage and suggested that a wooden crate would be a better choice to send out future model kits abroad to ensure the safe arrival of their product.

Ofcourse it was insured, but moreso to guarantee it wouldn't be lost in the system. That's quite a racket these shipping mail companies have designed, don't insure & it disappears, it's like dealing with the mafia! And forget about collecting $ for minor damage and it's a lengthy process to get anything out of them if it is destroyed beyond recognition.

On a more positive note; the quality on the cuts of the thick steel is impressive, very clean, crisp edges. We'll see how well it all fits together.

Good call on the JB Weld Rob, Lou, I was thinking the same thing too and have smoothed on the 1st layer. Now wait a few days to cure and add some more. ;)

Lil Giants
11-28-2010, 07:45 AM
Ohhh this aint styrene Steve! Both the boom & stick are a couple of pounds each (I don't have a scale to measure). That's 5mm steel you see within, I don't know what the material is that is formed around the steel for it's detailed shape. Obviously any sort of impact to it will chip it.

Sorry to see the damage on a new toy before you even get to build it. I thought I read somewhere that the material is some sort of glass filled resin which would not be to good for taking hits but great for load bearing. Your fixes should not even be noticed when completed. Will watch your build as I will be in the market for some construction equip. next year.

B/c of the size of the 850's bucket, I don't know how much I'll use the 850 to dig/load trks. I'm thinking I'll build a ripper tooth and possibly mount a large, powerful, slow turning motor with a grinding head to mined the earth so I don't have to do anymore hand digging. That'll also slow down the excavation too, make it more scale, win win. :D

Lil Giants

That'd be a great gh motor to try 1st Greg. I think 1st gear in the wdc trans 16:1 & 2nd is 11:1 with a 5000 rpm motor. I found that 2nd was a bit too quick and stalling the motor on not much grade. This 20:1 gh motor is closer to 2nd gear, but maybe slow enough to give the motor enough torque to push the load.

But the weakest link in the wdc adt is the 1st pinion of the front axle, it has to push the entire model! So even with a torquey gh motor, that'll be the next thing to BLOW! Junk the entire powertrain in that model and put a motor at each wheel... as there is really no space to fashion in a transfer case... or better yet, just throw it in the garbage, spare yourself the aggravation!

Been down with the flu for a couple wks, I haven't done much with the 850. I nearly got the shipping damage repaired, a bit more sanding / filing to do.

I got reply last Sunday from Vario that a claim of 200 euro has been sent to Fed Ex for the damages... busy time for everyone I guess, haven't heard anything since.

I blame Fed Ex Izzy, the condition of the box was poor, looked like it'd been roughed up alot during transport. All the parts had been wrapped with plenty of bubble wrap... but the pieces are HEAVY! box dropped hard too many times.

Still not feeling well, bad cough, not in the mood to build... it'll give me something to do during xmas/new yrs, the rest of my family is going to Ontario for the holidays and I got these worthless cows to look after.

Feeling better Greg? You're not cursed, you're just getting old! :D Do you not have an old timers leauge, non contact? I dont like fed-ex for large packages. My 1:9 tank that i bought from a fellow in Edmonton went to calgary, to regina, to vancouver... to FREDRICKSON, to VANCOUVER... to FREDRICKSON AGAIN!, to vancouver... again.. Called the 1-800 # and asked them wtf is going on with my shipment, explained its very fragile and that it should have been here by now. I'm not aware that Vario makes any extra attatchments for their excavator Greg. I was thinking I may inquire if they will send me the steel plates that they weld to the bucket that fit into their quick attatch on the stick so I can easily add my own selfmade attatchments. ;)

Nothing yet, I'm lazy. :)

Cool video Joe. Watching your excavator work I realize my hydraulics for my backhoe project don't run quite that speed. (Probably the small lines I'm using). Does your excavator have same Leimbach pump I'm using and, if so, do you have any idea what pressure it is running?

How's that 850 coming?

Joe

Yes I see you joined & subscribed today Steve, which is great! I wish everybody would post vid to yt. Photobucket vid sucks with slow connection, I can't get it to work properly & sometimes not at all. I look forward to seeing your vids. :)

JB (too many Joes here :D), likely same pump, 350ml/min. I bought a guage with this excav & set pressure to 15bar, which I'm certain is lower than the older two hoes b/c the stick won't pull this newer hoe sideways, the other two will if I hook something solid enough. The ID of your lines & fittings are likely 1.5mm, the same as my decade old hoes. And you can see how slow they move on older vids. This new one has 2.5mm ID... it almost seems slow to me now, I wonder how much difference 3mm ID would make? The 850 is 4 or 5mm ID. I'll get started on the 850 soon... maybe tonite.

Heavy Metal
01-04-2011, 10:48 PM
Thanks. I'm only running about 10 bar so will crank up and see how much diff. You are correct on 1.5mm fittings (well, Clippard fittings and lines are 1/16" ID but pretty much same thing). Looking forward to seeing the 850. Hope you will post some pics as you build.

Turning up the press will help to increase flow, but it also makes the motor work harder. Try to keep the cyls moving all the time, even just a hair so the oil flow is not all going thru the relief valve. Makes your batt last longer and keeps your oil cooler.

Yeah, I was gonna try a ripper on the 850. With the 80lbs weight & high working pressure, it might be effective... though this heavy clay sub soil is very hard.

I've given thought to a grinding head too, but trying to find a suitable electric motor with enough power, proper rpm and not too large in size has been difficult. I'd like to build a "terrain leveler" or "asphalt reclaimer" with a 3" dia drum. I was thinking I could ardox nails for replaceable teeth.

Damitz's hyd motor turns very slow, and extreme heat in the hyd oil system could be a problem. Chances of obtaining any parts from Damitz is very remote too; Lou, Greg & I have been waiting 3yrs this June for an order of a half dozen hyd pumps.

Justin, the short wheelbase 6wd white Globe has the most miles on it, it's the most diverse pulling 3 different trls: end dump, belly dump & lowboy. I could by with just that trk.

I've talk myself into finally building a decent sized garage this summer, a properly heated work area so I have somewhere to work during the winter with bigger better metal working tools. Bigger mill, lathe, chop saw, mig... build bigger better models in the future. It'll be great to have a heated room to thaw out my quad everyday too, as it gets full of frozen mud & ice during spring calving, can't be without that machine - not even for one day!

What you see of it in the videos is how I use it, on a wood surface mostly. I never turn it sharp in the dirt, so the track chain never gets clogged/binding with dirt.

It's a good thing I documented some of my basement thread on Scale4x4 cause it sure is handy for a Record of Repairs. :D

July 09 was the last time I broke this driveshaft... sure is good to have 6wd in this trk, I was loaded half way up to the crusher when it was just the front axle pulling... well actually holding the trk/trl ----> NO RUN AWAY REVERSE CRASH!!!! http://www.modelltruck.net/images/smilies/mama.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0232.jpg

During my search for the last new driveshaft I stumbled across when the Stahl adt went into service, Feb, 10... didn't quite make it a yr before coming back to the workbench for repairs, but it sure lasted a **** of alot longer than that piece of **** JUNK wedico 740!

Something wrong with the drive motor on the front axle, left side... I think it may have burnt out. The hyd pump has been leaking a little bit since new & dripping oil atop this motor. :( Leimbach's pump doesn't have a seal on the drive input shaft, relying solely on tight tolerances to keep the oil in. I've had a couple of pumps fail this way over the yrs.

Good info Greg and great to hear the problem solver is a fellow countryman.

I've been tinkering with the 850 and making good headway till I discovered a missing part. :( I also realized that the mechanical quick change for the bucket is an option, not part of the kit... my damage credit will cover that. :D

Reading Kalle's thread on Scale, he's burning thru a 6000mAh Lipo in about 25-30 minutes, a pretty power hungry model! I want to be able to power up my model with an outside power source, like a car battery, but the "endless" spin only has two paired terminals for the track motors.

So I ran three paired wires out the front of the bridge (idler wheels side).

Plug in this way, the tracks run on two different chs & the power comes from within the model.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0234.jpg

Plug in this way, both tracks are the same ch & I connect to outside power source. The paired wires within the model will be disconnected from the esc, then plugged into the main switch. When I want to turn, use the arm to lift the front of tracks & activate the swing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0235.jpg

Well, felt like playing mechanic & I dug into the insides of the adt to retrieve the bad motor. Before cutting it loose from the wiring, I check to make sure that it was indeed getting power with a volt meter -> yep, motor is toast!

What a bugger fishing that out! Had to bend the metal cab to make room, likely be a great deal of aggravation getting the holes to line up again. Only a few mm between the two motors, very tight area down there.

I order direct from Germany as much as I can, some of them I've bought 2nd hand from ppl I've met on the forum.

You can look at this place from Germany, a wholesaler for Stahl, Leimbach and various others.
TTM Modelbau (http://www.ttm-shop.de/content.php?session=31273379e835638146fc7ef6f4fa76 7a&Produkte%%2FTrucks%%2FBaumaschinen%%2FLKW+M1%%3A16 %%2FHersteller%%2FLeimbach%%2FStahl%%2FModelle+%%2 B+Zubeh%%C3%%B6r&seite=shop/produkte.php&hauptrubrik=212&hersteller=)

Larger than 14th scale rc can be purchased here for nearly the same price as Stahl/Leimbach constr models. Vario Earthmovers (http://www.vario-earthmovers.com/) I recently aquired the John Deere 850 (14th scale), the JD 450 is the 12th scale version with the only difference being the cab/body.

I discovered another piece missing, it's for the hyd pump/brushless motor mounting. :( I see on their website that the packaging, the way its packaged for this kit is way different than the way I received mine... probably the reason why I have had a few pieces not in the kit. And I see they're still making changes to the model too, a different track drive.

Joe. That machine is spectacular. The size and detail is amazing. Your going have to build a crane first, to get it to the floor. It's to bad that there are so many missing parts. Do you think the condition of the box had anything to do with that.
Rob

Lil Giants
02-15-2011, 10:33 PM
It's just been two pieces absent so far. Everything is in sealed bags, so it's an error on their part. They've been good about getting the parts out quickly without question. http://www.modelltruck.net/images/smilies/ok.gif

I can pick it off the bench, though I don't know about carrying such an awkward heavy piece down narrow steep stairs to the 'quarry'. I think I'll be walking it thru the house, out the back porch & coming back thru the window opening. :D

Worst case, it's just four wires & four bolts to split the u/c from the upper house. ;)

I just took some measurements with the cab in place, it's just under 11 inches. The window opening is just over 12 inches. It'll fit. :D

Not really frustrating at all Izzy, I'm not in any hurry to get it done anyway, I'm just enoying tinkering with it a little at a time. I didn't intend to use it till summer, it's more for outside than in the basement. :)

Hey joe since i got it i might have put maybe 10 hours on it ..Definatley have to upgrade the steering ..If i dont run it too hard I may get another year without having to put $ into it

The Deere is looking good ...I really like the way they have the swing set up and looks as though with the worm gears it will be very stong on the swing..With the new hydraulics at more pressure what type of hose did they supply you with?...Im thinking that I may one day build a big hoe with that jung pump i have so I will need some high pressure hose..

Nice to see another good vid joe...Very smooth on the hydros..That Kamatsu is one slick peice of equipment...Very popular channel you have with over 2 million hits...Now if you could get a buck for every one you could almost quit farming ..lol

Lil Giants
02-24-2011, 01:25 AM
Kinda feel snowed in Martin. I've been plowing/blowing for two long days now & I haven't accomplished much area yet. Get the cows home on the wkend & lock 'em in a big pen till the snow is nearly gone... the open area is much too deep for my quad. It's gonna be chaotic! I hope it warms up soon, this -25 nonsense is getting old, enough already!

Neil, the other fellow is Mitch, he's not much for forum participation and his new job that brought him to Utah keeps him quite busy. I spoke to him before xmas, he mentioned his rc gear has been boxed up for over a yr. Maybe he'll make an appearance on the forum someday when work slows down.

Ya know it's funny Lou, when I reached a million Dec 09, by this time last yr I had another 350,000... I thought I was on my way to 2 mill in no time... my popularity has died off. haha I look at modelkran1, he was about 5mill this time last yr, now he's nearly 20mill. I wonder how much he's making from YT Adsense? :D I haven't got a cheque yet... I don't think I registered correctly.

The worm drive is great for reduction, and quite powerful no doubt too, but the ring gear is plastic or nylon(?), not sure how much torque to put on that? And the stress on the arms, though they are made from 5mm, could get them wobbly too soon. It seems in the vids of Kalle's & Ole's Hitachi's that the swing is really noisy... could be an overly sensitive microphone on their cameras.

Waiting on parts, calving about ten days away, won't be any updates for awhile... :(

I brought my lil hoe (I guess I call it now :D) to the workbench last nite for an oil change, 1st time it's left the quarry since... maybe last Spring. Last summer the stick cyl started to drip... didn't take long to make the entire model grimy! :(

Every other wk I suck out the oil from the reservior, squeeze out the cyls activating the servos with pump off, then put in fresh oil. I haven't clean the filter in a long time & it seemed my cycle speed was slowing down lately -> clogged filter maybe?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0277.jpg

The glass jar has laquer thinner in it too clean the brass filter. I soaked & blew with pressurized air a few times, then left to soak in fresh thinner overnite. There was only a few grains of sediment left to be seen in the jar. I put the filter to my mouth (bleh) and blew before I cleaned, didn't seem restricted at all.

It cleaned up nicely, did you repair the leaking cyclinder? If nothing else, the oil keeps the dust down!

Did I read that correctly, you change the oil once a week? Is that necessary or just giving the machine a bit extra TLC?

Lil Giants
03-01-2011, 11:06 AM
No, it's not dripping that bad yet. I have extra cyls in stock, but there's some more life to be used up yet from this one... it's already a mess anyway.

No, change oil every other week, as in approx twice a month, I keep a mental log or I try to. :D I use it quite a bit & with the pressure turned up, the oil darkens quickly from the aluminum oxidization. It'd be nice to get these cyls with steel barrels, the oil quality might last considerably longer & the scraper seal too.

It's good to have inventory of different things I know I'll need sooner or later Dean, it saves alot of hassle purchasing & waiting for parts.

I sent Lars Stahl a mail two wks ago about what specific wheel motor I need for my adt? He replied within a few hrs to say he'd send me one, is there anything else I need? I said sure, I need some cyls for my wheel loader & extra dozer motors... I haven't gotten a response from him since, even with a reminder mail last wk... so now what?!!! Hey Joe

Is the rim size 57 or 47mm

Hello Greg,

I've spoke to Lars Stahl and he said he'd send me some... haven't seen or heard anything from him lately about anything in the mail yet. I hope to have it rolling late May/June... literally tonnes of dirt to haul out this summer!

The tire:
dia - 120mm
width - 45mm
exposed outer rim edge - 63
middle of outside dia of rim - about 53mm

Tire fits quite snuggly on the rim, a real test of your grip to wrestle the solid rubber tire onto the rim & almost impossible to get it off again! I've never had an issue of slippage between rim/tire.

The Wa500's drive seems to have a LOT of torque. Does it have a motor/gru on each wheel? About how much does it weigh?

Lil Giants
03-14-2011, 07:30 AM
Yeah, I really like the 500 too Greg, a very well balanced loader... I'd never go back to the wdc... even it were a freebie!

It'd take alot plywood Neil. :p It'll dry soon enough. Roof asphalt shingles work pretty good for "matts" over soft, muddy ground.

Yes, a gru/motor at each wheel, the same as the adt in previous pics. I don't know the final rpm, but tonnes of torque though! I don't have a scale to weigh it, I'd guess it to be somewhere around 13-15lbs... it could do with more weight. I was eyeballing the tires from the 740 to put on there, hollow tires full of BB's. :D

Uh huh, baler twine is supporting most of the skyways, the other side is anchored to the wall.

There's three levels to climb to get to the top, total elevation is about six feet. The 1st level from the floor is about 12 degrees, 19 foot length to rise about 44 inches. The other two aren't quite as steep. I was in the basement when the trks were going in & out in that video. I don't trust my driving that much! :D

This rather stock Bruder trl adds alot of play value to my constr area, hauling equip to different areas, as well as different levels. Took the dozer from ground level to the wall top. Then backhauled the excav from mid level to the ground level to load out dirt from another area.

Welcome aboard to the rc constr model scene pigeonfarmboy, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I have.

I have an idea in my head of what I'd like to do Greg, but it really won't be a reality for yrs to come... I think I'll have to quit farming 1st so I have some sunny days of free time.

I finally got my package of parts from Stahl last week, now I'm out of time to fix the adt anytime soon...

And I got a package from Vario Germany last week too... at the time I discovered another missing part, I thought I'd get some other parts sent with it too, the long delay has been from waiting on these other parts to be made... the other parts arrived to me last week, but they forgot to put the missing part in the box too -----> this is becoming too comical for words... I should be wearing the paint off the bucket by now, instead it's no further along than the last set of pics many months ago.

Spring has finally arrived & we have gone more than a week now without a blizzard! Might be dry enough next week to start some seeding prep fieldwork. We got flooded out here, the worst I've seen it in all my life. My house is fine & more importantly "the quarry" is unscathed, but my cows/calves/corrals have gotten a little damp during the last month.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0418.jpg

One of many less travelled roads purposely opened up so as to keep main grid roads from going under water. There is only one road to town & there were a few times when that one was almost lost. What a year it has been for excess moisture... I hope we didn't get the next decade's worth all in last yr?! lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%201%202011/IMG_0421.jpg

I've managed to haul out some dirt over the last month, some from atop the wall & some from below... lots more to go yet... after mud bogging.. 'er seeding.

Hiya, Joe.

If I may call you, Joe :)

Greetings from norway.
I have, over a long time, been able to follow your various threads, both on previous Gardentrucking, and now, here. And I must say, the torture test you put those machines through really sais something about the quality of those machines :)
Actually, the various producers should sponsor you with new machines for testing. I think it vould be of great comersial value to them to be able to document the reliability and quality of what they make.
Not to mention, they would help you a bit in your basement project ;)

I see you actually got something from Stahl :p
Good work. Here in Europe, more and more people get more and more p... off about Stahl. He never delivers, don't answer e-mail, or phonecalls. When ever you DO get something, parts are always missing. He's only too glad to keep your money without sending the items you bought.
I've even talked to people that has been on his doorstep to get pre paid products and he has been really, really rude to them. Just saying his name is like swearing, now
I was in touch with TTM in Hessen, Germany, about his products since I had a feeling he don't want to ship outside of Germany anymore. And TTM has been a sort of retailer for Stahl. But even they recomended me not to buy his products. They also have problems with him and has even removed almost everything made by Stahl from their netshop.. I wish the old man was still alive. Someone need some real ...kicking. Because they really had some very nice machines. Like the Khomatsu and the Volvo.
Oh, well..
Just thought I'd give a bit heads up on whats going on with Stahl and his reputation here in Europe.

Hmm.. You ever thought about taking up boat building? :D
It would seem that at times, you might need it. Or maybe amfibious vehicles?

My self, I am building my first hauler. A Tamiya, Scania. But somehow, it never seem to get done :) Think I've gone totally over board with detailing and rebuilding..
Well, maybe I'll put up a thread in here some day :)
And yes, I usually DO write a ton at a time, lol..

Have a nice one, Joe. And keep the vids flowing :D

Chers.
Ian.

Hello Ian

Yes indeed, call me Joe. :) ...though there seems to be many of us here with same name. :p

I certainly haven't baby'd anything I have and I seem to get alot flack for never cleaning them either. :D

You're not 1st to suggest sponsorship & I'd be all for it myself, but "they" gotta eat too. I'd be more than happy to continue to do it freely for just the good service, but I'm not getting much of that lately. :(

I think few ppl will/would ever punish their models like I have, and nowadays the majority seem more concerned with "details" & "scale perfection" than performance anyway. The manufactures really don't have a need for me to do any performance torture testing.

Yeah, young Mr Stahl's father's good name has turned to mud, but in all fairness, the late Mr Harald Stahl's sudden passing has left Lars in quite a bind to replace his father for much needed help in the biz. As I understand it, Lars is all by himself trying to manufacture & distribute these kits.

My father passed a couple of months before Lars' father did and I know 1st hand the position that Lars is in trying to find suitable help... finding some one who cares what they're doing moreso than "working the clock" is greatly becoming a rare commodity these days.

Lars is gonna have to make some tough decisions soon, before it's too late... either scale back production runs & focus on quality/complete kits, take the time to train a suitable employee or sell the biz. I wish him good luck & great success, I hope he recovers his loss of business reputation & continues on well into the future... I'm always gonna be needing spare parts as I wear out shyt. :D

I've thought about building a barge and putting one of my Stahl track hoes on it to do some dredging... that would be part of my outdoor trk park someday... which also might now be sooner than later...

With my father no longer and my mother has left the farm to live in the big city, there their big beautiful house sits empty, much nicer than mine! I had it rented out this winter to a young family that I know well, but they tell me today that they just bought a farmyard of their own and now the house will be empty again in a month. Ahhh, to go through the hassle of finding somebody I trust to respect the house & yard.

My parent's farm is the main yard. It's where all the equipment, the shop, the cattle/corrals, ect are. I commute 3 miles several times a day, everday... how much easier life would be if I lived there! But I go there and that'll be the END of the Lil Giants Basement Excavation project... that's really the only reason why I still live here in this old shack of house. It'll be 10yrs this July... how time flies!

Got some thinking to do....

Anyways, thank you for your interest in my hobby contributions and nice compliments. I look forward to seeing your Scania build and hope your enjoyment of detailing it is ever as much as I enjoy the hobby too. :)

Cheers from Canada

Joe

ps: I can't but help to write too much too. :D

Looks like you have stocked up some material ready to be delivered outside house (when weather permit). Hope flooding is over soon, here in Sweden, we had a very snow rich winter but it disapered quite fast since ground not was frozen up.
You said you have been doing the digging for 10 years, how long do you think before done? What will the space be used for when finished?

Lil Giants
05-05-2011, 03:37 PM
Dan, I've lived here nearly ten yrs, but the digging really didn't start till the summer of '05. The previous couple winters I moved dirt from one corner to another a couple times each winter.

No special intentions for the added space, it was just a great source of entertainment to work at when things were slow on the farm at various times of the yr. I would have been done by now had I really wanted to be, the last couple yrs what I've taken from the walls I have processed/piled a few times before taking the dirt out. And also I have a lot less free time now that I farm solely by myself, I only work at it a few hrs a week the last couple yrs, where as I use to be a few hrs every night. It's been the perfect all weather/all season playground for several yrs.

I've got a bit more than a cubic meter of loose soil to move out, which I'll likely get done even if I do move out.

I see you have as wet of a spring as I am having. Rafferty and Boundary dam have been letting out water as much as they can. boundary was letting out at 120 cubic meters/second and the mine bridge down stream can only handle 60 lol!! Rafferty has been dumping at 100-150 cubes/second to. Rafferty I hear is in some hot trouble, they opened the gates and the cement holding them cracked and they jammed. so Rafferty will have to drain out like Alameda dam. (same problem there to)

now all the water from down there is almost where i am. there is 2 dams here Boundary and Rafferty Dam. Boundary is the oldest and is right full. its spilling over the flood level bypass WHILE pouring through a canal into Rafferty at about 150 cubic meters a second and now Rafferty dam is within 6 feet of water pouring over the top of the dam and the spill way gates can't handle the water pressure and the cement has broke and its letting water out at an uncontrolled rate, which is causing more flooding in the valley. those million dollar houses are now even more flooded, golf course is flooded and next might be my place.. oh why oh why did i think living in a valley was okay...

Dean, I've been watching the news & seeing you easterners are getting hammered with moisture... sure glad I didn't get that snow you guys got last week.

Yep Freddy, another late start again this yr. Hard pressed to get any preseeding work accomplished with heavy fog & light showers these past few days again. Some neighbors started seeding last week, but were getting stuck atleast once a day. I hope to start thurs or fri, weather permitting. It shows sunshine the rest of the week, but that could change to showers tomorrow.

I've been eyeballing my parents yard, what to do, where to build, what kind of dirt work project to begin there and to make it an any weather/all season arena.

I've been thinking about selling the cattle herd... too much of a workload in the spring with calving/branding/fence mending/seeding/ect and this yr has been a real mess of everything with the extreme winter weather. Since BSE of May '03, the cattle herd has been barely sustaining itself, I'm getting paid only a few thousand annually for all this aggravation and this fall it'll be a negative income with the wreck I had this spring! I don't even like cows, I just tolerate them. Since my father passed, I haven't been further than 100 miles from home in 3yrs... I've just about talked myself into getting rid of them. :D

And if I did, the barn will make a great area for a trk park of 36 x 72. :D Although it's just a tin dome with no heat, could be a little chilly in dec/jan. :( Within the structure there's an insulated calving parlor 24 x 10 (dirt floor, winter quarry zone) and an upstairs sleeping quarters 30 x 10 (that could be my Lil Giants workshop)

Hmmm, new possibilities, all of this just occured to me now. Shop just a few hundred yards away, mig welder and many other metal working tools in there, as well as a proper cement floor for a bigger lathe & mill (tax write off :D) Perhaps something to look forward too, for a changed!

May even make a video like you posted of JensR, there'd be lots of room for a body of water in there. :D

One question on your volvo truck, does the wheel mount directly to the output of the motor gearbox?

More: After looking over on scale 4x4 your font motor assembly looks very close to something I ran accross a few weeks ago. It may be worth ordering 1 and seeing if it is a fit, for $13 it seems to be worth a gamble.

Joe, hello and how's the project coming? I have viewed your progress and enjoyed your videos of your project. I noticed the "rock crusher" that you made. Is there a build thread for the "crusher"? Do you have a materials list? Or suggestions?

The reason for the request is to duplicate this for an idea I've got for my back yard. I can have my hobby stuff and use it to do some necessary work for the truck area.

Thank you, again I enjoy reading your posts and look forward to seeing more.

Lil Giants

It's a dirt lump crusher, not rock. The clay can be almost as hard as rock, but this crusher will fine it up to scale size 4 to 6 inch (half the size of a garden pea). I made this crusher to fine up the dirt for when I was using a belt conveyer to move the dirt out of the basement. Now I just cush it for fun, then trk it out. No build thread on it. Nothing to building it, just a couple of rollers that are power by 1/4hp 110vac motor & 60:1 reduction box.

A member earlier in the winter mentioned something about building a scale jaw crusher & screening plant. He's got a well stocked basement machine shop to do it in, haven't heard from him in awhile, hopefully he's going to surprize me soon with a jaw crusher. :D

Nate, correct. I have the needed motor now to fix my Volvo adt, just gotta get 'er done. Thanx for the link.

Ed, link doesn't work. I know the forum you referenced to, but haven't found the thread yet. Which sub forum is it in?

Raining again here... for the last week. Got a wks worth of seeding done, I suppose I'm half done what I intended to plant, so I'm not totally screwed... but time is running out. :(

So I've been tinkering on the 850 these past few days and discovered another missing part, a compression collar for the pressure guage fitting... stalled out again! What a fricking joke

Aseer helped me to get some Spektrum radios with the left stick spring loaded center. Put a rx into one of Freddy's screwdrive trks I got from him last yr... we'll find out here shortly if it's Lil Giants tuff or not?! :D I sure like the brushless motor & R2 trans that's in it, perfect scale speed & control. The plastic driveshafts I don't think will last very long... stay away from the ramps. :D

Put the adt on the workbench tonite maybe, get the wheel motor installed & tune a Spektrum radio to it with ch mixing of the steering & dump with hyds. After that I'll do the wheel loader, then trackloader.

As always, lots to do, but not always the ambition to do them. :D

Joe, thank you for the response. How many crusher rolls does your unit have? I was thinking at least three, that way I could progressively reduce the size of the material I put in. What are the rolls made of? Is there any contour/ shape to them? Are the rolls staggered or in-line? Would it be possible to get some pictures of the unit that would aloow me to duplicate it?

Thank you again for your help and response.

Hope you get all your equipment operational,

Two crush rollers, spring loaded doors to let the rocks pass thru freely so they didn't stall out the motor. The rollers are 4 inches wide. Here's some pics.

I recruited one of Freddygeardrive's trks for the quarry job. It has a RC4WD R2 trans & a brushless motor/esc combo that I also believe comes thru RC4WD, very reasonable speed & great control. The trk in the vid is putting around in 1st gear. I'm also using a Spektrum tx, oh so nice to have no more GLITCH!

Yeah, the electric lift is pretty quick Martin, but will it stand the test/stress of time like my hyds have? :D

You funny Greg...

Making great use of my newly aquired Spektrum radio system, I added a Spektrum rx to my adt & took advantage of the "two mixes" feature of the tx to combine the hydraulic pump with the two hyd valve controls of the steering & dump.

Very simple to calibrate, got it on the 1st try without even reading the instruction manual... very unusual for me! :D

This little trick should increase batt run time maybe as much two fold or more. :)

Joe, thank you for the pictures of the crusher that helps understand what's under the "skin"'. Did you make or purchase the crusher rollers? Are they formed in any way, like a full size unit?

Thank you again,

Jim

Isn't the Spektrum/JR programming structure great.:) That is cool how you have the radio setup Joe. Will you add the esc pump control to your front end loader and excavator?

Once you started using an ESC, you won't go back ;)

I made the rollers. The top crush roller is #60 sprockets (one on each end) with 5/8 rod welded to it, I machined a steel shaft in my lathe to fit the weld-on sprockets & turned the ends down to 3/4 inch to fit the bearings. I also laid down 1 inch long beads of weld on the 5/8 rod, staggered to help grip the "lumps" & pull 'em in.

The bottom roller is 3 inch steel shaft, ends turned down to 3/4 inch to fit the bearings. And again, beads of weld the length of the roller, spaced half inch apart to give the roller some grip.

The Spektrum programming is the BOMB Scott, it's so easy that a caveman could figure it out! :D

I'll do both loaders & dozer in the near future (waiting on some goodies to come from RobotMarketPlace), but not the Stahl excavator as I need max oil flow continually the entire time it's in use. And also, I don't want to give up my F14 tray radio that I use with this excav, I really like how it feels in my hands for thumbs control.... although, Spektrum now has a tray radio, the DX10, that might be perfect for an excav tx. ;)

The 850 needs an esc to power up the brushless pump motor anyway and I have a DX8 radio for this model, so I may experiment with mix on this hoe... but it's likely I'll have the pump run near to it's capacity all the time anyway for more precise movement & control. I've practiced for yrs to always keep the cyls moving so little to no oil flow is deadended thru the relief valve.

It's a "why didn't I think of that?!" idea Emil. :D That's a slick way to run these minature hydraulic systems to conserve amperage and wear & tear!

Lots of wet weather here too Greg to firm up the dirt, the Volvo adt has no trouble backing up & on top of previously dumped loads of dirt from the wkend.

hey joe good to see the adt up and running the mixing you are doing on the radio are you doing that on the excavator on mine i just run it and when im not using i shut it down as i have the pump on a battle switch and i can run it for around 45 minits on a lipo

An interesting idea Martin, nifty to see it work.

It's raining here again today Dean... tried to seed yesterday (3wks, 5+ inches rain since I last turned a wheel), stuck 4 times in 3 hrs, gave up! I was just wrecking the land! All those rutts/mixed soil, the crop will be thin there for the next decade or longer. :( More rain in the 7day forecast... next yr country...

Moving out lots of dirt in recent wks.

Following another builder's lead of this model, I added 2.5kg to my counterweight. It seems to be adequate thus far.

What a humongous, heavy & aukward piece to carry down a narrow & steep stairwell... almost tripped on the 1st step! http://www.modelltruck.net/images/smilies/mama.gif http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/images/smilies/uglyhammer_2.gif

I have the pressure set to 20bar, 2.5kg of BB's in the counter weight & after the 1st 5amp batt thru it last nite, I'm reasonably happy with the way it works. I'm thinking the swing esc, a MTronics Viper Marine 12v/15amp esc will need to be upgraded to something better, it's acting a little wonky putting 15-16v thru it... although I have the EPA set to 60% on both sides to limit the current going thru it.

I got some tinkering to do on it, then I'll go tackle that dirt pile outside before dark maybe. More movies tomorrow.
