I started to convert a small cat bulldozer of my sons to rc that has been put on hold for now and i'm working on converting a mining truck now.

I'll get some pictures when i can. I have the drive and steering sorted, i'm now working on the screw drive for the tipper i've got it all working but the motor i've used is the standard motor that came with a tamiya 1/10 rally car i bought years ago i asume it's a 27turn motor.

This motor does the job to test everything works but it's not powerful enough and it's far too fast. These are fairly small models so room is a bit tight one solution is a gru but there just isn't the room for it.

Does any one have any ideas of another motor i could use that is no bigger than a standard tamiya motor. I was thinking about a 80T crawler motor but not sure if this will still be to fast.

1/10 tamiya is the standard 540can, i dont have 1 here to measure the exact length but take a look here for some ideas http://www.technobotsonline.com/motors/mfa-geared-motors.html the 940d and 950d are 385 motors that have a gearbox on the end, they have measurements in the pictures so you can work out if its the right size.

well i have a few pictures of what i've been doing there is no real work plan being used here just jumping between both models as i have an idea to try and make things work.

By the standards of the builds on this site this is pretty poor workmanship but that said i'm not looking to win any awards just having fun.

So here is a few pictures.

The screw drive for the tipper still in it's rough stages just want to get it working properly first then i'll worry about tidying it up.

I had to modify a battery pack to get it to fit.

The plan is to convert the orginal blade lift rams to screw drive. I bought two small servo's to fit behind the blade. The still have 2/3 of the torque of a standard servo but are much smaller, i'm hoping the two together will have enough power to operate the blade ok. I've done a bit more work on them i'll post more pictures later if anyone has any interest.

Keep us informed on both builds. Lots of pics. I for one enjoy conversions.

I always thought of doing one of those coversions. like both. i like what you did with the dump box a lot of smart thinking going on there.

A few more pictures of the screw drives

the drive mounted
http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss119/d4vew557/rc/SAM_0426.jpg

just needed a small modification to the blade to get it to fit. I had to do a few mods to the servo aswell. The original mountings were chopped off and a 5mm hole drilled for the mounting pin to go through, the problem with this is the servos are so small with the pin through them there was no room for the electronics so the have been removed and will be fitted in the body of the dozer with just a wire running up to the motor in the servo .

With a proper radio you can have blade tilt. Nice conversions.

It would be possible but due the failure of one of the controllers for the servos they will both be wired to one standard servo controller as such they will only work at the same time.

I have got the blade operating, i am a little disapointed with the power of the servos though. They are very small but were advertised as having about 2/3 of the power of a standard servo which can't be right as they lift the blade with no problems but when the blade is dropped they can't lift the front of the dozer of the floor which 1 standard servo does with no problem.

It's not an issue though as this model will never be doing any sort of hard work.

well i've been quiet for a while but i have been beavering away on the dozer. i originally had a tamiya 70097 twin gear box fitted but i stripped the gears pretty quick so ive fitted a tamiya 70168 and hopefully that will be better.

I've also purchased a sabertooth 2x12rc controller which seems like a good bit of kit.

I'm having a few technical issues i'll put a post in the tech section so if anyone who knows what they are doing could have a look that would be great.

I hope this build got finished? Any news?

Who has more info on the drive gearbox? And, what is the dozer to begin with? Is it a bruder and what scale?

Inquiring minds need more info...

Well after this project was shelved for almost a 1 1/2 year ( it doesn't seem that long) i decided to bring it back to life.

no it's not a bruder i'm not sure of the scale but it's small, now it has a servo and battery fitted it might give you an idea of it's size

For now only the dozer will be worked on.

I have purchased a 6 channel tx to control it.

Here are a few pictures of what ive done over the last week or so.

most of the electrics installed and a new gearbox as the old one failed

the ripper still needs a little work but over all its working nice. controlled with a servo and some linkages

The blade is proving more problematic I can't get them screw drives working nicely. They are juddery keep jamming and have no real power. so i'm toying with the idea of using a standard threaded bolt rather than a drill bit.
It will be slow but should be smooth and more powerful and as for this application speed is not to important i will try it and see what happens.

Well i finally have it all working. still need to sort some of the cosmetics but that can be done later.

Here is a short video of the dozer in my living room.

http://s567.photobucket.com/user/d4vew557/media/rc/dozer1_zps91813799.mp4.html

I changed the bulbs in the lights for mega bright leds which i think was a mistake they are a bit to bright, not a big issue and one i will sort later.

i think i will plod on with the truck while i contemplate my next conversion. I think it will be a bruder wheeled loader.

That's not bad at all. I have tried few conversions my self, but small tamiya gearboxes failed one after another,3v motors are just to weak.

i changed the 3v motors for 6v pololu motors and surprisingly the performance was much worse so i went back to the 3v motors but i think i am over working them so i don't know how long they will last. I do have a few spares though.
