I do not quite remember all of the beginning so I'll give some pics w/a narrative . I decided to try to build (what I have seen thus far) what has not been done . so far it is a great success :D
the scaling of pics and design and pattern making , starts with a parts book and some general knowledge of compacity range as it's difficult to acquire data for these old machines . all motor scrapers have a basic shape and size according to bowl compacity . So I figured out the comparable machine in another bran such as a cat 637 to get the general dimensions . basically using the tire size to finesse the design

the next few pics are of the assembly . now scrapers are heavy so are these by design :D the round at the goose neck is a 12000# front axle king pin :p

I wouldn't call them scrap pile's heck mine came from scrap piles LOL 1 thing I learned in fabricating nothing ever goes as plan . I got to redo some areas to put the trannys in also extend the goose neck because of not having exact dementions but thats how it always goes for me :( but I still try to :D

( dirtpusher9 ) " Glad to hear about the new tranny Steve, look forward to an update."

thank you joe glad your here feels like home ( real home )no bs when you log on or phone calls of accusations when your busten you but trying to get your job done and get home to your wife ,kids and HOBBY :D. NUFF SAID ON THAT NOTE  I'm soon to be ready for paint on my 5900i so while painting I'll be getting these tranny's in and fixing some flaws . Also It's starting to cool down a bit :) + looks like I'll be able to be in my shop more than just a 1/2 day/wknd ( I'll have to be  )

I could bring the D8 by to use as a push cat to save all that bending over..LOL
I always wondered how well a scraper would work for us..Lots of possibilities

What does the scraper weigh..??

ihbuilder

in excess of 40# , the weight is the key;)

ihbuilder

thanks Dan , yea she's getting heavy and not done yet still got to make the ejector and may fill the tires w/bb's + elec. and hydros . thats the purpose for the 5900i + rogers so I don't have to carry it :p

thanks Tom , the tires are off the tamiya mammoth . 6" dia. x 2" wide they scaled out rite on

Tom, Why don't you try to cast some tires from silicone? If you could come up with the right size you probably could sell some to others in the same situation. What dimensions are you looking for?

I agree the construction tire issue is not very good here ...Wonder if the rock crawler parts supplier that makes the scale rig tires could be talked into making a few different versions ..Im sure the are a few guys on here the know him personaly .
THe scrapers are looking good steve...looks like you have the drive pretty well figured out with tons of power to load ..Are you planning to add a second gear as well?

ihbuilder
08-20-2010, 11:51 PM
Tanks LOU I was planing to but with the trannys I got to change a lot . so I'm thinking of gearing it up for the high speed and use the radio to slow it down . got plenty of power and weight :)

Because the trucks are 1/16 and 1/14 approximately. The german construction equipment is built in these scales as well. Then there is all the diecast in 1/16 you can use for static loads/staging/cargo. :)

no , I ditched the idea for now . I just increased the speed through the gearing and I'll slow it down through the radio ( If I need to ) . The boxes I got just would not work for what I want . so when I start putting #1 together I'll build my own . I'm just eager to get one working then fine tune later .

Clyde , the bail Is 4" from center of pin to loop . The push blocks are 3.5" high on the rear and the front push plate goes from 3" to 4" of push area . I have to move my tow hooks back a .5" for the bail to work . If I made the bail longer it would have looked way out of scale . the tow hook could be off do to not having good pics to go off of .

thank you Joe , I know what you mean about getting close to scale  I'm working on all the details now and crowd/ejector . I have the barrels made for the crowd cylinders just got to get these wheels off the lathe so I can make the rest . Have you ever been close enough to 1 ( can be a cat 627 637 ) to see in the bowl ? is there any grove or track on the floor for the crowd /ejector ? my parts book only shows the 1's on the side for the side roller . I could ask an old customer about looking at his but I think he has them in the marcelus shale (gas) field making rig roads :(

Steve, the only thing I've ever seen is the 2 runners on the floor for the crowd carry rollers to run on. I made mine out of stainless steel strips so they would wear better (like their going to get a lot of use). Are you case hardening your cutting edges and side bits?

Have you come up with a bullet proof tranny yet? I was reading on a earlier post about two speeds and what came to mind was a two speed motor. I was scrounging around on my motor shelf looking for a motor on my boom hoist and found one that had two windings. Only problem with yours is you need super power in low.

ihbuilder
10-05-2010, 07:14 PM
Steve ,I plan on building 4 2 speeds this winter after cabin fever . I have a good loading speed right now which will work for shows and meets . when I'll need the high range will be in the 1:14 scale working garden railway where I can get some good scale working area . With 10 acres I can build 1 heck of a lay out that will keep expanding forever :D could even put a coal stripping in it ;)

IHbuilder-that looks really good! With it sitting on that trailer you can see the size of that "brute". Should be a "diggin" machine!!

thanks Tom . I'm hopping it will work like the real one . as is now it'll spin the wheels in the tires . I finally got the right size bar to make the wheels so I'll oversize the bead a little than stuff them . for size it's between a 627 and 637 cat . If you ever see a 627 on a trailer thats about what it looks like . But I think they have the 4th axle down .

would those be number 40 or 50 half links??? lol i know what those will be for i had to grind on mine to get them to work right and smoothly

1 more size :p 60 the pads will be 2" wide the same on my td8 wide track but much much bigger just a tad smaller than Joes D9 :D I will build the td8 also w/a 6 way blade just about got that figured out :p

like size wise? that be a big dozer lol i used number 50 on the terex and i am in the same scale as DP Joe and my pads are 2 inches wide and 5/8's then a 1/4 inch grouser bar on the top 60's would be a lil big for a small dozer wouldn't they?

Clyde ,I plan to build 2 ,the td8e and td40 . The td 8 is 7" pitch which scales to .5 . I think that will be #40 the # 60 is for the TD-40 I've been wanting to do this before the pans but my want to be different over came me and had to do the pan's first this'll be about the size of your 82-30 and a hair smaller then joe's 9 . Hydraulics may slow me down on the pan . with the lack of space hydro's are the best option , can't run it with out them ( steering ) unless I change it ( no way ) the dozer you do not have to have the hydro's to use it . A heavy blade w/ cable up or some screw type mech . hidden to work the blade . All in all I still shooting to get - R - running for winter .

Oh lol i missed the TD 40 lol now i follow you yea i went with the 50's and shoulda used the 60's both the 82-30's that i have the hydralic and the cable will get switched over to 60's and new pads lol but any ways to top all the other things i have in the works i been thinkin about another lol but i really need to concentrate on what i have in the works lol

thanks Ed , I tried It out today with both motors running ( back to the shelf it went :( ) . hollow mammoth tires just aren't going to cut it :( just spins the wheels in the tires . So I'm going to get my dozer going , then revisit these later :( .

Steve can't you fill the tires with silicone or a hose that will help and give it a little weight to ? Ed

Ed , the weight or filling is not the issue , it's the wheels spinning in the tires . I found the tires I want on RC-machines just a mater of watching our $ inflate and becoming worthless next to the euro  + lack of it also and I'm sick of trying to be low budget ( Impossible ) . So I don't care how long it takes , these are going to be the way I want them , If I got to make everything on them :p:D

What 1/4 scale servo are you using? If it is a hitec digital servo, I have a hitec digital servo programmer and if you program the servo to 180degrees of rotation you can attach the steering linkage closer to the center of the servo and get almost twice the power out of it and still have good throw.
