I deiced to over haul my 6x6 rock crawler and go with something more scale. I try ed to have it done for Indy this year but the black truck was being to much of a pain in my rear. So while I was waiting for my supply's for the fire truck build I deiced to get it back out of the closet and get going with it.

SO here it is I am going off the KW 963 family of trucks. Witch there is many different ways you can order one of these monsters this is the one I liked
most.

I started with a new frame 26 inches long with FH12 frame rail tips.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0423-1.jpg

Next to shorten the sleeper by a 1 1/4

Then I cut the fenders off and angled the nose down and I lowered the sleeper to match the roof of the cab.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0429.jpg

Now to start filling the hood back in.

Now to build the fenders, I built them out of 1/8 to make them good and strong.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0434.jpg

Now I had to modd some stock KH air cleaners to match the ones on the real truck.

Now I built the tire rack for the back of the cab and I got building and did not take picks but here are some afters. All alum sheet and angle taped and screwed together with a chain rack on the passenger side.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/1116092116.jpg

Now to build the drum winch. I am not going to make the winch itself work but it will work. :-/

Heres the parts we need..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0442.jpg

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0443.jpg

Ok here is how I am making the winch work. i am mounting one of the good scale German winches. the winch that started all the other winches nice thing about these is they will pull ALOT of weight with out breaking.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0444.jpg

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0445.jpg

Then I mounted a fair led in the top of the deck for the cable to come threw and wrapped the cable around the drum. So when you run the winch teh drum will turn .

Now i still have alot of detail to go plus the trailer still needs to be built.

I got a little more detail work done late last night on the rig. I made a movable 5th wheel and 5th wheel ramps.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0456.jpg

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0455.jpg

And as you can see in the picks above I also added a RC4WD King Kong hook.

Then I added a edge for the chain box out of brass angle.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0458.jpg

Tamiya Cowboy
08-13-2010, 02:06 PM
Then I made square blinkers out of 3/8 square tube and cut the King hauler amber light to fit. And I also added brush guards out of brass over the blinkers.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0460.jpg

I got the tranny mounted. I used some milled shock mounts for the F350 they were the perfect size and hole pattern.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0462.jpg

I also got 2 of the 3 drive shafts in my other one did not show yet.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0461.jpg

Then I got the steering done. I used bigger alum tie rods and emaxx ball joints and I added alum black drive hubs and junked the plastic ones. I also used a 645 for the steering and a 5626 for the shifting.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0464.jpg

Tamiya Cowboy
08-13-2010, 02:08 PM
Then i thought a set of these were fitting since it would be 11.4 Lipo and a 55 turn with a 8 tooth.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/IMG_0465.jpg

And the rig is getting a full set of custom milled hubs

08-13-2010, 02:16 PM
I got a little time this weekend to start on the trailer of the Oil Field Rig. Stock tamiya flat bed trailer with F350 leafs and CR01 wheels and tires I have added a rub rail and the roller on the nose of the trailer I still have the rear plate and roller left to do and leg and lights.

They really finish off the look of the wheel I am very happy with them and the quality of them is 2nd to no other..

Greg wanted some side by sides so here you go Greg keep in mind the body will be about 1/4 high when mounted.

I also got a new King Pin Plate milled out of derlin that Lynn made for me I am trying it out for him. They are just perfect and there is much less friction between the trailer and 5th wheel also the derlin wont mark up the painted 5th wheels like the alum plate does.

Wow! This thing is stunning. I love how you painted the Tamiya transmission and motor Cat yellow. I was kicking around the idea of doing it to my truck as well and seeing it has sealed it's color fate. The big tires and paint just make the truck. She looks great. Hi Paul,

Are the rear diff's stock Tamiya and what is the front diff? I would also like to know where you bought your winch from please.

I would also like to comment on your tidyness of your work bench, it shows in your workmanship.

Bob thanks for the great comment. Yes I am very happy whit this truck. I like being able to drive pretty much where I want to. It is pretty low geared and with running 11.1 lipo plenty of snort..

Dan

Dan Thanks much for your comments. I really like the cat yellow on the tranny I have a few of my trucks done that way and the paint on the truck is a signal stage fleet color so very easy to touched up if marked.

Bob Again thanks for your many kind words. As for your questions the rears are tamiya semi axles with RC4wd straight axle ends on them and the front is a tamiya TLT axle witch is a semi axle with C's and knuckles on it. As for my bench I try to keep it very clean as when it is not is causes stress then I don't think straight. :D

Awesome build. Looks mighty ruff 'n tuff! I think the log trailer is a much better idea then the short trailer. With something as beefy looking as this tractor that short trailer didn't do it justice in my opinion. With a heaping load of logs it will look much more at home in the mud truckin' along.

I never thought of that trailer hauling logs, I assumed it would be to haul pipe on a pipeline or oil field job. I guess it would be good at either.

They use these trucks for many different things just depends on what you buy it for. The picks I went off and the specks I went off of were off a oil truck web sight were you order them.

Paul have you ever thought about adding a headache rack? Maybe something that would support the pole trailer?

Oh yeah Joe she has been done for a while now it runs real good and goes dang near anywhere. Becky likes running it at the 1:1 Semi truck shows after it rains and running threw the water puddles and mud for people..

Awesome truck! It looks like something made for the middle east. Lots of simlar trucks on this page:

Unfortunately, many of the linked photos are no longer on the page.

If you want a new look, you could put a rotator on it, soemthing like this:
