this will be my first build post here so it better be a good one :D

OK so this is a rough idea of what I'm shooting for, I've been gathering parts for a few weeks now and I'm ready to start on it. the frame rails are 36 inches long and will have the cab sitting out front, 40-ish inches total. going to have the same axle lay out, lots of aluminum upgrades! and lots of time involved

I didn't mean that in a bad way, seems like the Mountain Dew is giving Russ a very vivid imagination. Carry on.

Hey Russ, when it's done will it be able to lift your cat?

the main part of the boom is 3 x 1 1/2 tube 36inches long and is going to have 3 stages to it. i'm going to have to build some bad azz outriggers

If you have the counter weight correct your out riggers only need to support the total weight of the crane. It shouldn't tip. I saw a guy at a show last year who was retired from Grove and he built a truck crane like yours only a older model that has a lattice boom he built from Stitka Spruce. When he booms it up all the way and adds his jib,he has 21' of boom. Then he demonstrated the erection of a scale model cell phone tower.

russisloud
09-21-2010, 10:29 PM
that would be kool to see. thanks for the info, i was going to add counter weights but really wasn't sure how much i was going to need. so that really helps

Very nice Russ, you have a very good imagination. If i could make a suggestion, consider using the Tamiya Super-Single tires.

Nice build, I'll be watching. What hydraulic cylinders are you going use?

Tamiya Cowboy
09-26-2010, 10:31 AM
Russ she is coming along nicely.. I am thinking we need to find you bigger tires for it and the boom trailer is a must the only time they run the boom forward is when on job sight but going down the road they have to use the toter for weight limit laws and i understand it is easier on the running gear of the crain to get the weight off its back..

I just discovered this thread. WOW! Cranes are something that have always been quick to get my attention. I have a crane project posted in the Construction Equipment section here on this site. I'd suggest you at least post a heads up there to your topic. Mine's 1/24 scale, and is also rather freelanced, but follows 1/1 general practices. Take a look?

I can see where we could share some ideas, if you're willing. You sure have a lot of nifty looking hardware there, and it's coming together nicely! Dan
