After a long long drive to what felt like the other side of the world we arrived at Friedrichshafen model fair…

It was 4am, I was tired, but I was happy because I was here to collect my new model…. A Bell B35D made by THS Truckmodel of Germany.

After a brief look around the show, I could no longer wait, so went and collected the new dumper… after an hour or two I had the rx installed and driving around the track

What's under the cab/hood for internals? How congested is it?

You like this motor/trans/driveshafts/axles idea better than the motor per wheel? Is there a transfer case between the front axles & rear axles?

Thanks for all the positive responses... I waited a long time for this beast.

To answer some questions..

Under the hood is very crowded - Battery, pump, valves, 2 speed gearbox and transfer box and all the electrics.

Drive is achieved via an 80watt brushless motor into a 2 speed gearbox. The gearbox has a transfer box built it, so out the front is a very short drive shaft to the front axle - out the rear is a double jointed driveshaft to the rear axles.
All the axles are remote lockable - so has really good traction.
1st gear is slow enough to crawl and has plenty of torque - 2nd is almost too fast.. but is good for bits of straight road.

As you can see from the photos, the scale detail is amazing.

Ref the electric drive verses mechanical question? The b50 with electric drive is much more powerful... but I don't like the way it spins a wheel ( like crazy ) when it loses traction. Again, the b50 had a tighter turning circle due to not having a drive shaft between front and rear. And yes the B50 is now sold, it was a little too big and heavy for me to carry to shows etc plus a good friend also wanted to buy it.

I've only been to the Karlsruhe and this show. They are huge... you could easily spend 3 days looking at everything... boat, trains, planes, helicopters, cars trucks etc. By all accounts the show at Dortmund, is even bigger... I know only certain vendors attend Dortmund and Karlsruhe, we as they all attend Friedrichshafen.

If you do fly over Joe, let me know I will attend and say hi...

Hmm, I would have snapped up your B50 if I had known you were trading down :p :D

It's a strong possibility that I go to Friedrichshafen next year; get out & see the world while I still have my health. Lmk asap when the dates are for the next show & I may see you there. ;)

Great looking Machine .. Can some of you guy's give me the pro and con's between this machine and the wedico 740 dumper , down here in Australia there would be a couple of thousand dollars differance in price ...

Being that I have the junk 740, I doubt I got 20hrs on it before scrapping it for parts! Without a doubt this Bell35 adt of Elliot's is a 100x the model b/c it's properly powered with a transfer case between the 1st & last two axles! Hendrik Seipt is a superb model builder. wdc is pot metal casted crap!

Hi Joe, Yes he has built some interesting models - unfortunately, Hendrik speaks very little English, but his Co. partner, Tobias, speaks English very well. I learnt a lot speaking to him. The 944 that I used to have and indeed have again ;-) are also designed by him.

He's a full model build/designer and will build bespoke models if you wish.

He recently had an open day - here are some pictures ( hopefully the link will work for none members http://www.das-baumaschinen-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=6754

If you do make it over here... make sure THS will be there - they are a great bunch of people to chat to.

Hi Paulio,

Joe pretty much hit the nail on the head - not to knock WDC too much as they have been supply machines for a while - but they need to move on with the times.

There is a big price difference, but you have to take in to account that the B35 is completely assembled, all I did was to install a RX and away I drove. If you were to divide the hours this things take to build, by the premium over the WDC then you realize where the extra money has gone.

THS also plan to to sell this B35 as a kit as well... sometime next year. So there should be a budget to fit all pockets.

*edit

I forget to add... the Fumotec ADT, be it the B40 or B50 is a cheaper alternative and is a real work horse... but to me the B35 is a good compromise between scale and usability

Thanks every one .. Elliot what metal is use in it's construction on the bell models is it powder coated or painted with two pack I read your build on the bell 50 . I'm a bit confused after reading it . How come that model was kit ? and made out of steel ..

Hi...

The models come from different suppliers with different ideas..

My B50 was from Frank ( Fumotec models ) he also makes a B40 as well. His models are made from a heavy gauge steel plate and come in kit form and allow the modeller to finish them - He also sells them complete if you want?
The fumotec are designed for hard work... but they are very heavy - my B50 weighed in about 20kgs

My B35, comes from THS and is made from brass and steel, it's fairly heavy at around 14kgs. But also has all the scale detail. The paint finish is 2 pack... it will get marked - but I bought them to use them.

I'm off to a friends house next Saturday - so will post some videos.

ADT is Articulated Dump Truck and B50 relates to a Bell 50 ton machine ( my old one )

B35 = Bell 35 ton. The baby of the bunch ( my new one )

CAT740 = Catapillar 40 ton machine;

Hi... the chassis and rear bed is made from steel and brass... The cab, fenders and hood are all made from a thick resin type plastic.

It is a lot more detailed, but also costs a bit more :mad:

I don't know much about WDC, but this much I can say;
Having spent 6 years on building my crane, the work, materials, tools etc. AND just having gone to the website you posted and looking at the products, quality, and prices, those machines are a bargain! Congrats on your new acquisition. Dan

Wow, such a beautiful looking model! I love the details. The axles, the torque rods, and radius arms, under the rear suspension. Very nice! The driveshafts look the same as the ones that Wedico uses. I'm a little surprised at that. Wedico runs driveshafts with a 4mm bore in the yokes. It seems like everyone else runs 5mm bores. For such a large model, that will carry a lot of weight, I will be interested to know how those cardan shafts hold up. I know you didn't disassemble the model, nor build it, but do you know the axles have panetary hubs? That would ease some of the torque off the whole drivetrain.

I'd love to see some video of the model running. I'd say that 4am trip to pick it up was well worth it!

Thanks for the nice words.. The detail on the rear suspension is amazing, with the track rods & tie bars, even the rear light clusters match the original.

Well spotted on the driveshafts they are the same design, they may even be from a wedico, or certainly the same supplier.

About a week after owning the model, the gearbox decided to give out, THS over-nighted me a new one without question which I fitted in due course. Oddly enough the gearbox is from Bosch, its actually a cordless screwdriver gearbox. So I've had a little experience with working on it, its very tight for space that's for sure.

The axles are from Premacon and do have planetary hubs in, according the website, they are 12:1 reduction, so as you can imagine, very little force is on the drive train. So far it's gone up and over everything I've put in front of it!

Thanks and yes very damp, the snow was melting in the roof and dripping down nicely. It made a lovely mess. Amazing how a little puddle can completely change the driving course.

The other model is a b40 from Fumotec. Same company that made my b50 but a little smaller and more in scale with the other models.

I'm curious too, how you clean your truck, after running in the mud like that. I don't think I'd have the heart to do that!

Hi, glad you enjoyed them. To be honest, I haven't cleaned them yet and unless I need to work on them I probably won't. The mud and water barely covered the tires so the mechanical moving parts are all still free from mud and debris...
