I've been wanting to start this for about six months and Lou has me inspired(I'm fired up!) with his Pacific build so here it goes.... I've been working on the drawings for a couple days and collecting pictures and measurements for months. My Dad worked for a logging company that bought one of these trucks brand new in 1972 so as a kid I always thought the big Kenworths were cool(appearently I still do):D. My truck will be based loosely off of the few pictures he took of the truck the day it arrived in 72' and dozens of other pictures I have taken or scooped from the net....

You’ve go my attention I’m truly impressed, are you going with an oversized wheel or staying with the STD wheel.
Tim

The truck will be 1/10 scale so I have a small pile of Mil Spec 2.2's that I will use to mimic the standard 14.00x25 tires the real trucks have. I only have 10 tires at the moment so if anyone has some lying around that they would like to get rid of please let me know as I need 16 more eventually. I need to pick up some more materials before I can do much more but at least it's a start.

Thanks for the interest!

Nice job "tin bashing", :D. I think that's so cool to think ahead and cut out the cab in one dimension then be able to bend 2 or 3 dimensions from that (cab and cowl). I love the big rugged trucks, 1:10 scale will be nice too since it will be even bigger. Hope to see a trailer along with it Reg, you've got some nice equipment to haul around. Great start!

Thanks Ben. The plan is to build an over the bunk low bed and of course a 60 ton Columbia logging trailer....

I finished ruffing in the cab tonight after work. It needs a bit more love but I think it looks OK.

That is some true talent, if ever I've seen it. Laying out the drawings, cutting your metal, bending, and welding it. That's craftsmanship. It's great to see such photos. Lots of times builders just take pictures when the project is half done, but this gives really good insight into how one might be able to replicate your technique. I am sure it is way harder then it looks. Especially the tig welding. I can't even weld aluminum. Super project! 1/10 scale is just your size now? For all your models! Very nice.

Lou, I took a bunch of pictures of the small low bed that Western has at Port McNeil. It's an over the bunk style and looked relatively easy to make so I'm going with that. As far as a log loader in my future, well maybe but no plans as of yet. I thought I would just make a booster seat for your loader to sit on lol. I will post up some pics of the real truck when I get them. Right now they are on slides but my dad has a pile of them that he wants to have converted to photos and I think(hope) he will get them done soon.

Thanks for the complements guys.

Thanks but I really don't think you have anything to be nervous about. The Autocar looks great.

Dan, the sheet is around 1/16 thick.

I didn't work on this yesterday but when I got home from work today I desided that I should build the fenders. I am out of stock on material now so I don't think I can do anything but dream about it until I have a day off.:(

Thanks guys.

The front rims started out as 2 3/4 round bar. I still have a little machining to do on the one wheel and all the mill work to do on the other. After they've spent their time in the mill I plan on smoothing out the corners with a dremel to make them look more realistic. The real rims/hubs are pretty crude so that takes the pressure off a little:o.

Thanks very much! The wheels are actually just bead blasted at the moment. I did that to remove the sharp edges left after milling. I'll try not to keep you waiting too long! I want to see it finished soon too!:D My Argon bottle is nearly empty and the supply place where I exchange it has no more until late next week.:( I guess the company that fills the bottles has sent them all out at once to be tested. Hi Reg,

Looks great, I was thinking of a Haynes down the road. What drive gear are you going to use?

Colin

Thank you Colin, I plan on using a 12v or 18v drill drive for the power source. I have a few of these collected up and haven't decided if I will use a single or two speed drill. The front axle and rear diffs will be scratch built. I would like this to move at least 100lbs easily so everything will be heavily built!

Looks great Reg, and as no CNC was used to make those wheels that's even greater achievement:)

Thanks Ari! If a master builder like you thinks that they are OK then I must be on the right track! Everytime I see one of your builds it makes me want to improve on my own. I don't know if I will ever build at your level but you set a benchmark that keeps people pushing to achieve it!

Those front wheels are awesome looking. Man, I need to get a rotary table! Dan

Yes Dan you do need a rotory table! I'm not sure how many hundred times I turned the handle on that thing in the last two days though....cnc would be very nice!

Thanks again!

Thanks Steve, The same thing happened with my Euc so I picked up some really dense foam from an automotive upholstery shop and made my own. I will be making some up for this for sure as it will be a lot heavier. These rims are way larger than a 2.2 and the bead is really stretched on there so I don't think they will go anywhere providing the foam holds the weight.

I plan on making it look like it uses those to hold it together but I probably should have drilled the outter holes further out toward the bead. That would have left me more space to put something there.

The clamps are from these guys here. Mine came from a local tool store so I'm sure that you could buy them local as well. Anywhere that carries autobody stuff will probably have them. They do have a lot of grip for what they are just don't get them too hot or they warp. Oh and don't forget to buy the pliers to open them...

It is quite interesting that someone from the other side of the pond would have such an interest in Canadian logging equipment. He has travelled here several times to attend shows and photograph equipment(mostly off highway trucks). He is also a model builder but in 1/87 scale. It's a bit more difficult for me without being able to weld things together as I go but scotch tape is doing it's best to hold things together for now. Anyway my happiness comes from forming the hood in one piece in one shot. I don't have any tools for rolling so it was just me, my 6" vice, two pieces of 1/2" pipe and a plastic hammer. Thanks guys! I spent the whole day in town today running errands so I didn't get any work done on the KW but I was able to find a bottle of Argon so I can get back at it tomorrow. Locally there is some sort of bottle shortage in the 9 and 15 liter sizes so the distrubutors aren't being supplied with full ones. Today was this weeks delivery day on the south island and I was able to phone around and locate just 1 bottle of Argon. Luckily enough the truck had just arrived at the last place I could get one from so I was able to pick up the only bottle they received for the week. I don't really understand how there can be a shortage of empties but appearently the company that fills them sent most of them to Alberta leaving the outlets with a very limited supply for the last few weeks. It sucks for them as they have no gas to sell and a bunch of unhappy customers.

Wow! Can't get over the quality of the metal work. Being able to weld aluminum is a great plus, especially when done by such a skilled craftsman. The truck looks great.

This build is awesome. I admire your metal fab skills, and wish I had this kind of talent! I can kind of machine parts with a manual mill, but I don't think I could scratchbuild a cab out of aluminum, and weld it together! The hood looks really good on there, and I like your spring hangers for the front axle. This truck is going to be a beast! I like that it's in 1/10 scale too. It's got to be huge! It will match really well with your skidder. You probably have a lowboy in the works, even if it's just an idea in your head, so the skidder can be hauled around with this truck, right?

Thanks very much guys. It's coming together quickly and it's also becoming my second favorite build. Actually I don't know if it's really coming together quickly as I've spent somewhere between 50-60 hours on it so far... I do have a plan in mind to build a lowboy for it as well as a logging trailer. I don't have the tires needed to build any trailers yet though so it may be a while. I managed to pick up 6 of the 10 truck tires used so I'm hoping that I can do the same for the trailers(hint hint;)). Buying 16 more at the local hobby shop would be nearly $300 plus they don't have them anyway. I was out in the shop this morning long before breakfast. I gained a little headway on the front suspension and axle. I had just enough 1/2" banding to make the front springs so I need to find some more before I can do the rear. My goal is to have the front end finished by the end of the weekend so that I can start swearing at myself while trying to make the rear diffs.

It took me most of the day but I almost have steering...well at least the two wheels are connected! The pieces aren't all that pretty but it should be strong once it's all put together properly. I don't know how many times I moved the pieces in the vice and changed the tooling but I'm happy that it's almost done and they don't look like square blocks any more.

I have a Soba 4" vice. It has swivel base(I've yet to use it) and some V notches in one jaw. That's it, nothing too fancy unfortunately.

The spindles started out as one block about 2"x1 1/4"x1 1/2".

Well I took a short break because the sun was out and I was feeling guilty for spending the whole afternoon in the shop but after that I got it working. I had to move the servo mount up from where I had originally planned to put it but as it turns out it is now mounted where the steering box is on the real truck making it look more realistic. The truck is starting to look like a real 40 year old truck. Every day I build something and weld it on only to cut it of and weld it on somewhere else the next day:confused:! I still need to add another leaf to the pack(there is 12 and should be 13) and then make fake U bolts but I'm happy with my progress.

Thanks for lookin...

Yeah I think so Steve. Use the same in the R18 with no problems and it runs a 6lbs battery right over the axle. This trucks steering is very similar and I doubt if it will be any heavier on the nose.

The KW is looking great. The Bruder looks like a 1/32 scale model, sitting on the turntable! It must be nice working in 1/10. Machining small parts like these only gets harder, as you go smaller in scale. It'd be fun to build a big truck like this, but I'm not so good with body work. I don't think I'd be able to pull off a cab as nice as yours. For someone who doesn't think they know what they are doing, I'd say you're doing just fine.

She's a little plump but that's OK....

It has it's good points and bad points building in this scale. It is nicer to make the parts as they are a lot bigger BUT you have to make everything! There's no going online or to the hobby shop for a set of diffs or a scale set of tires that's for sure. I enjoy the challenge though...

I really don't know what I'm doing but I am getting better at making it up as I go along:cool:.

Thanks to my half-*** welding skills and my "superb" grinding ability

You have to weld good to be able to grind it smooth, and you didi it both!
Small question, from pics seen there's no crossmember between the 2 bogie brackets inside frame. This area is taking most stress on a real one, do you plan to add one here? What load are we talking about, have seen some of those timber trucks realy "overloaded"

And almost forgot, you are a quick builder, this qwill be ready within a couple of weeks I guess.

Thanks guys. I have to admit that I was a little nervous about cutting the frame right in the middle and it getting really out of square. The next challenge was trying to figure out how to cut it. It wouldn't fit in my bandsaw but luckily enough I was able to cut it with my scroll saw. I had a crossmember welded in that also needed to be moved and I couldn't get at the welds with a grinder so I had to use a chiesel to bust the welds. It all turned out OK though, it just took a couple hours.

Yes Dan there will be a crossmember between the rear axles but I haven't got any good pictures of it so I have left it until later. Tomorrow I am taking a trip up island for business and there is a yard on the way where 5 of these trucks sit. I will be stopping to take pictures and some measurements. After that I should have all the info I need to finish the truck. I hope to have it completed soon but I don't know if a couple weeks is realistic! I started it a month ago today I believe, so probably another few weeks yet...

Thanks again guys. I went and looked at the real trucks today with my Dad. I took over a 160 pictures and made some measurements. I think I have everything I need to finish the truck now. The trucks all had the trailers too so I was able to get some photos of them as well but when the trailers are loaded up its pretty difficult to do much measuring. I think that I will need some more info before I try to build a trailer.

Ken, That Mack in the video is similar in design and size but different all together. Mack did make a log hauler though for this area. It was called a CL350. Hayes HDX, Pacific P16 and KW 849-850 were the most popular trucks around here with a few of the Mack CL350 and later on, very few Challenger trucks thrown in the mix.

These are the trucks that we looked at today. They are just in a different spot on the property now and have grown some more westcoast slime. These trucks are a few years newer than my model reference but are virtually the same.

I really appreciate the compliments guys! ...Jason, you have my number and you're welcome any time....
After looking at the real trucks the other day I figured out that I was given some miss information on the trucks wheelbase. It turns out that is around 236 inches not 225 so another frame stretch was in order:(... I did manage to do one thing productive today though. I finished the rad gaurd... There were a few "F" Bombs dropped while trying to weld this together but it looks OK. Sometimes I really wish I was working with styrene not metal but I'm sure it has it's faults too!

"Small question, from pics seen there's no crossmember between the 2 bogie brackets inside frame. This area is taking most stress on a real one, do you plan to add one here? What load are we talking about, have seen some of those timber trucks realy "overloaded""

Dan, I finally finished the rear crossmember yesterday. It went together fairly easy so that made me happy. I'm running out of excuses for not starting on the rear axles....

Very impressive Reg, this build is realy notching up truck builds! Looks very solid, nice parts around bogie. Can see you frustration remaking it another time. If not crossmembers in place you might have could slided bogie to the rear and "only" extend rear overhang. Like those machined bogie brackets.

Thanks very much guys, you all make me feel like I'm doing a good job so thanks!

I spent the day today making hubs for the rear wheels. I felt like I was listening to Tony Beets telling Parker how to look for gold on Goldrush....Drill holes, drill holes, drill holes! By the time you center drill them all and then drill them to size it's quite time consuming! I think they will look pretty sharp though when finished.

Nate, My plans have been to run either HPI diff gears like I did in my Euc, or else use cordless screwdriver motors on each wheel. When I finished machining the hubs tonight I was able to try a screwdriver motor and I stripped it in my hands so I guess I will be using the HPI gears. The diffs in these trucks are quite complicated so I'm not really looking forward to it but I guess I have no other option....

come on , stop procrastinating and get them done :p I wanna see this thing running tomorrow :p:p:p the HPI assemblies are pretty simple to use . I made new shafts for the mack rears instead of using the cups that come with them . thats the simplest , but you loose some scale look going with the spit axle .the loader , I made pined shafts well , a bolt that you screw in through the cup into the shaft once the shaft /bearing assembly is slid into the axle case .

Oh great job on the hubs know what you mean on the holes

RCP57
02-11-2013, 07:39 PM
The diff sets that I have don't have the cups on them. The axles(self made) slide into the spider gears. I'm not really to concerned with making that part of it work but the Clark diffs use a seperate gear train to offset the driveline from the pinion shaft and that's what I'm worried about. I don't have a good selection of gears for that and neither do the local hobby shops, not to mention that they want around $10 a piece for them and I don't know what I need for sure. At any rate I will figure it out, it will just take some time. I may have to buy a couple new drills and steal some gears... The drill drive that I will be using for power will put around 8000 ounce inches of torque to the axles in low gear so it has to be very strong!

Thanks Ken, The holes are just drilled and the bolts pushed in. No threading! I know what you're saying with the wedges to hold the wheels on but I won't be doing that. I think my plan is to just bolt through the rim into the hub on these and just fake the wedges.

I'm not really sure what motivates me Nate. I'm just trying to stay busy and sane I believe. I think working on this stuff is relaxing to me but only if I can get a lot done at once. I'm a commercial fisherman so there's no getting paid just for being at work and if we don't produce a big catch then we don't make any money. I think that spills over into everything else I do. Sometimes that hurts my builds because I don't spend enough time on a single part but I am getting better with that...I think:rolleyes: I used to work on cars/trucks but that hobby got too expensive so here I am!

Well Nate, the straps are actually just zap straps:o and they do hold the air cleaners to the mounts. I machined a bracket to go between the air cleaners and the guard on the fender. The bracket has grooves machined in it all the way around with a relief cut out of the back side to hide the connection on the strap. The bracket then bolts to the guard on the fender. I think once they are all painted up it will look OK.

I've been working on the diff housings on and off for a few days now. Many things have not gone my way so far. The first thing to go wrong was a broken bandsaw blade before I even had the diffs cut out. I managed to TIG weld the blade back together well enough to finish splitting the block in two but not a permanent fix by any means. I had wanted to do a lot more cutting to save time but the weld was starting to crack so into the mill they went. After about three hours of cranking handles as fast as I could I was spent and soaked with sweat so I called it a day. The next morning I was off to town to buy a replacement blade... When I arrived at the first store I quickly found out that they had every blade imaginable EXCEPT the one I needed. So off to the next place I went only to find virtually the same situation there. They did have one that had more TPI so I reluctantly purchased it, made a quick detour to buy some cheap cordless screwdrivers(you know, future projects...:D) and home I went. After arriving home I quickly installed the new blade only to find out that it was a no-go on 1 3/4 aluminum. At this point I just carried on machining for a while until I finally became frustrated from shop vaccing chips off of the floor and re TIG'd the blade. If I had done that in the first place I would have saved myself at least and hour on the mill:mad:. Anyway a number of other patience testing moments have happened too but this story is already too long... I did have my cordless drill spinning the rotary table while I was milling today though...at least that was fun... until the clamps let go of the housing and....$#%^^#%

I almost have the "easy part" done. Soon I can start on the pumpkins.

Thanks for listening?...or looking?

I've had it set up over two years and this is the first blade I've toasted. I normally run a 10 TPIx1/4 blade with the saw geared down. Without slowing the speed down though it would kill blades fast, especially with thicker material.

Wow. Impressive, Reg! The axles look really good. How did you machine the round part of the axle housing, right where the pinion shafts pass through? Stupid question, but I just have to ask - There is no way you free hand milled these, following your drawn on lines, did you? They look to nice for that. I'm guessing you just layed out the lines for the rough cuts, assuming your bandsaw blade would last for the job. Is that a coat of primer on them now?

Hey, a bad day in the shop is better then a good day at work, right? Well, maybe. I think we all have those days, when everything seems to be fighting you. So you've got a lot of time, sweat, and tears into this project. Hopefully no blood, yet? :D

I used a lathe and a 4 jaw chuck but sorry no pics. It was my first time using a 4 jaw chuck but it went fairly well. The first drill bit I used wandered off a bit causing me to say some bad words and grow a few more grey hair. I drilled in from each side toward the center so luckily I only had the issue with the one axle tube. I installed bushings that are 3/8 OD so by drilling in very slowly with a 9.5mm bit I was able to get the larger bit to cut straight(almost) and in the end be able to press fit the bushings. Its a few thou out but you can shove a single axle all the way through both sides. It just doesn't turn as nicely as the other axle but I think it will be fine. When you put an axle into the diff gears from each side it spins freely. It definately made me sweat for a while though. I have way too many hours into these housings to wreck one now.

Increadable, could never imaging doing an axle from a piece of stock material!
With your skills in welding I was supposed to see axle welded together from different pieces. And that you could get the bore it straight, thumbs up.
Like that "cheese plate, do you have a pic without anything on it, guess have to do one of these, looks realy handy.

That's the one thing about machining the more complex parts. The ones that have so many steps, and take so long to make. The pressure to not mess it up, raises exponentially, every time you reclamp for the next stage of machining. :D

I think the worse part is when you spend hrs manually on the lathe for the 1st op only to mess it up in seconds in the cnc mill by forgetting a decimal point on z depth :(

A few minor updates.... I changed to bearings on the outside when I made the fake brake drums-backing plates. I have started making the rear leaves too but I haven't made much more progress.

Dan, Here is a picture of the plate that my father-inlaw made for me. It has an MT2 taper on the back to center it and is held down with 3 T nuts-allen bolts. I asked him last night if could make me a larger one sometime so hopefully he will. It would be nice to have a little more surface area.

Yeah it is nice to have his help every now and then especially when it comes to tooling. He has helped me out a lot by giving me stuff out of his toolbox. We haven't spent much time on the machinery together though which is mostly my fault. He has offered but our schedules don't work out all that often and I'm really pig headed and want to figure stuff out on my own(usually the wrong way). I know that I'm weird but I like to be by myself a lot haha! He might come over this weekend though to help me build another hydraulic pump so that will be cool if he can... I spent a little time here and there over the last few days and managed to get the rear suspension done. The leaves need some prettying up but I will do that later on when I finish the axles. I made up my own link bars and TIG'd them together. I then pressed the pins and rubber bushings(hose) in. It seems to flex nicely but not an unrealistic amount. At least I was finally able to see it roll back and forth on it's axles! Now comes the tricky part...finishing the gear train!

Once again, nice work Reg! The radius and torque rods look good. Question though....is there supposed to be one more rod, running parallel with the axle, that ties into the chassis frame rail? I've never seen a Kenworth like this, so maybe they don't have them? I'm not sure of the proper term for a rod like that, but I think they call panhard bars in the rock crawling world. Nate Thanks! These trucks don't have a panhard bar. The earlier trucks(848-early 849) with underslung springs did have them but appearently they had too many roll overs so Kenworth went to a different suspension setup(the same as Hayes and Pacific) with overslung springs. I guess the spring pack is enough to keep the axles centered:confused:.

OK, Todays update... well actaully it's been a couple days. I FINALLY almost have the front diff finished. I need to weld the gears to the shafts and do a little more prettying up to the housing but it works. I have started the rear diff too but I'm still waiting on the ring and pinion....AND MY MILL DIED! I'm not sure what happened. I shut it off because I was done for the day, then I changed my mind and decided to drill another hole(this is just like riding a motocross bike, never say just one more lap cause thats always when you crash hard). I flipped on the master switch and nothing happened. It seems like there is a blown fuse or something. No magic smoke escaped and there is power to the mill. Anyone have any ideas? BF30???

Oh man, Reg, after seeing your axle in this mostly completed state, I think I'm just going to throw in the towl with my build! That looks awesome.

Sorry about the mill giving you problems. I guess if you have digital multi-meter, you need to see if you have in coming power first, and if you have some fuses, you need to check that they are good. Just pull the fuse and do a continuity check - meter set to ohms. Not to familiar with your mill. Does it have a speed controller? Maybe you just have a bad push button or switch?

In anycase get it going so you can continue with this incredible build!

I don't think you need to throw in any towels. Unless you want to throw them my way for when I cry myself to sleep knowing that my mill died:(. It has a brushed motor with variable speed. Power is getting to the switch but I'm not sure about anything beyond that. I read in the manual that it has a fuse but it doesn't say where it is. It just tells you to have it serviced by a tech:confused:. It still has over a years warranty on it so I won't go too crazy until I speak to the dealer. Unfortunately no. Everything turns freely and was working perfect when I shut it off. It has a very faint smell of burnt electronics so I'm thinking it's something bad. I had to modify the end of the drill drive so that I could attach the driveshaft. Now I can machine some mounts and lengthen the driveshaft...

It was a bit of a hastle to get the parts for the mill but only because the courier couldn't properly read the address on the package. Anyway after a few phone calls and an extra day:mad: it finally got here yesterday afternoon and within about 15 minutes it was back up and running. Now everytime I turn the power switch on I cringe though. I guess it will take some time to build back my confidence in it. Appearently this isn't a very common occurance so hopefully it doesn't happen again. The warranty runs out in a few weeks so it may be out of my pocket if it does it again.

Looks awesome Reg! Glad you got the mill up and running. I'm sure it will hold together for you, from here on out. Probably just a fluke. Those Savage differentials are pretty strong. I don't know anyone who has ever destroyed them. Even on the go fast brushless Savages, so I'm thinking you'll be surprised how much abuse these can take.

On a different note, why the discoloring on the axle shaft ends? Is that simply from cutting them to length? Pretty hard material?

Thanks guys. I'm not too worried about the HPI pieces(they are in my R18 too) but I am concerned about the pinion gears that I used out front. I think that they won't strip but I'm pretty sure that I will have to weld them to the shafts. I have glued them and used the set screws for now though so we'll see.

The discoloration on the ends of the axles is from welding. I used 1/4" for the axles and 1/2" for the hubs. It was way easier for me to drill and weld on the 1/2" than machine all the axles.

I know I didn't take enough pictures but after not working on this for a couple weeks I was/am in a hurry to get some things happening! Everything will come back apart soon and I will take some "inside pics". My plan is to oil fill these before final assembley.

I just finished the motor/planetary mount...It's been a busy morning:D...just the way I like it!

Great job Reg. With that much power you will probably be able to ride on the trailer yourself. I don't think it will have any problem with traction either, after seeing it dig holes like that.

Thanks for the compliments. I spent a little time making the mounts for the tanks and finished up the hitch today. I also may have driven it around the shop floor for a while:rolleyes:.

I decided that I wasn't finished working on the 850 for the day and went back into the shop... I cut out and welded up the V notch for the trailer reach.

RCP57-this is some nice work on a really unique truck. The video looks good with lots of power. I don't really understand the "turntable" on the back. I have never seen this before. Can you explain what it's for. Enjoying the build.

The turntable supports the logging bunk. Rollers on the bunk contact the turntable and help stabilize it. The real trucks use a 15' wide bunk and with 100 plus tons of logs on the truck and trailer it has some serious twist. The 18" piece of square tube sitting on the turntable represents the scale width of the bunk.

WOW, this is a piece of art, Reg! really looking good on the photos, should have a "normal" truck sitting side by side to see how big this KW is. When looking at the video it looks going a little fast, is there a 2nd gear in the transmission?
What would you say have been the hardest part on this model, guessing the rear axles.
Will you have a sound unit inside?

Dan, when I put my Mack Granite back together I will snap a picture of them side by side. Yes the trans has two speeds. I the video when it is going quite slow it is in low. I think this speed is pretty good but high is much too fast. I need to ditch the esc that's in it too. It isn't very smooth in forward and doesn't perform well at low speed.

Yes I would say that the axles were the hardest thing so far. My mill breaking down part way through didn't help! I'm still not convinced that they will stand up to the weight without welding the gears onto the shafts but I hope they do.

I'm not sure if I will do a sound module because they don't make any that sound like a 12V71 Detroit. I did ask on the forum a long way back about it and some guys said that you could have them made if you could provide a sound clip but that sounds expensive. I have been following the thread on the smoke generators though and I think I have enough room under the hood to fit one in.

Thanks to everyone who follows this build!

Wow, what a work of art Reg! I enjoyed the video. What a great feeling it is to see something moving around under it's own power. That's awesome. I'll bet you feel really good about it! Nothing like running a model you've just built, for the first time. More so if you've scratchbuilt everything yourself, including the axles! It's a fine looking model, that's for sure. Are you going to paint it red, or yellow?

That would be great if you could find that Neil. I would love to have the Buzzin Dozen sound under the hood!

Yeah Lou, my Dad checks out my progress quite often. When I'm at thier place using the lathe my mom always asks what I'm building her... I guess thats a bit of a hint hey? I think they are both impressed and wonder where I get the patience from. Neither one really says too much they just look at the stuff and smile(I'd like to think their proud haha) I don't really think I am patient at all though. If I was I would be happy to take years to build something. For me I think my lack of patience drives me to build faster and dedicate myself more to each model.

Wow thanks Nate! Yes there will be a log hauling trailer and a lowbed. I will build the log hauler first. I have a few parts built for it already and I just received some factory drawings from a friend of mine last week for it. The only real stumbling block right now is the tires... I guess I will have to break down and order them real soon!

Finished up the cinches on both bunks and got the cables on the front one. It doesn't look as scale as I would have liked but that's the way it goes sometimes I guess. At least they function properly!

This has been really interesting for me to watch, Reg. I work around highway log trucks but the big off-road trucks are non-existent around here. Used to be in the '60's and '70's when there was still old-growth and the hauls were short. The turntable and the hitch on this truck are new on me and I'm sure there will be more. Add to that your skill and speed with aluminum or whatever you yourself want to call it and this is a great build.
Will there be cutting edges on the bunks for the logs to grab on to so you don't strip the load?

RCP57
03-25-2013, 04:37 PM
Thanks for following along Jared. I hadn't really planned on doing the cutting edges but now that you mentioned it I think I will. The material is thick enough to mill a little off in the middle creating them on the edges of the bunk.
I had enough pipe left to make 5 more rims so I did that today. I also welded the turntable to the frame and mounted the front fenders. After that I took it out for a test drive with the body on. I guess I shouldn't have been driving it up steep slopes and loading the motor heavy because it fried the esc. The esc is only rated at 8.4v and I'm running 12v so I'm not too shocked that it didn't last. I guess I went backward $60 there so that sucks...

Please ignore the rubber bands and twist tie.lol

Check out m-Tronics speed controls - no frills - but some are rated for massive input and huge amperage. Hardly any bec though. They are used mainly for boating but are a beast with power.
