I think you'll get a better fit, if you use a boring bar, or a reamer.

thanks espeefan

my first attempt at lathe and I found out the three jaw chuck was not true
one of the jaws was from a different set and would not line up so I thought I was doing it wrong
nothing I did was true so I thought I had to learn how to true up the 3 jawed chuck so I started watching youtube videos of lathe work (mrpete) machine shop tips great videos
that's when I figured out that the jaws were wrong well at least one of them was
7 x 10 habor freight

Check and see if the jaws are in there correct locations?
Sometimes they are numbered or labeled.
Cheers, Neil.
