As if I haven't got enough to do, I thought I'd start a new project.

Started out with 4x of these:

Have now got 1x of these:

Cool, what you building Stuart?

Thanks Kaptain, its a secret for now;) Want to make sure I can do it first:eek: am open to guesses though:p

Made some progress over the weekend, now have 4x tyres, 4x wheels, 4x hubs and 4x motors:

http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/ovj99/JD9530/IMG_3064_zps9e4612c0.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/ovj99/media/JD9530/IMG_3064_zps9e4612c0.jpg.html)

Brass wheel bolts m2 x 10, 8x on each wheel:

Next is the motor mounts, will have to wait until next weekend though to start those, a busy week ahead.

My god. You making a tractor,or a loader? or 1/10 scale four wheel drive truck....
I give up.

I will take a wild guess.

From the looks of the tires and the fact that the rims have only 8 lugs holding them to the hubs, I would say it is going to be a bobcat type of loader.
With those tires and anything larger, there would have to be more lugs nuts/bolts holding the rims to the hubs.

Now you have my 2 cents worth. BTW I hate secrets...LOL

Not sure what it's going to be yet, but nice machining job on the wheels/hubs. Where'd you get those motors if you don't mind me asking?

Your on the right lines Kaptain

The 1:1 has 10 wheel bolts but I went with 8, those 2mm holes are a sod to tap!

Thanks, the motors came from here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/22newcentury/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2654

A few clues:
It has 4x equal size wheels/tyres
Is artic steer
And remember what section this is in;)

Danke :)

I found this at my local scrap metal merchants, 5 meters of 50mm ally bar and a 2.5 meter piece of 20x60, I picked them up for 50€:D

Not sure what grade it is but it machines lovely, started roughing out the first motor mount:

Not bad for an old Colchester student lathe which incidentally before starting my first wheel for this project was the last lathe I used at school over 20 years ago!

Hope to get more done over the weekend.

OK, Stu, I guess you're building a CAT 938G wheel loader. The clues given by the tires and articulated steering lead me to this conclusion.

I was saving up for the MFZ Blocher kit http://mfz-blocher.de/jd_knicklenker_bilder_g.html for the conversion but blew the money on my Bridgeport mill instead so decided to give it ago by myself.

This weekends work:

Thankyou!

No drawings, only sketches with dimensions of the parts I want to make.
I am basing it on the MFZ Blocher kit, of which there are a few build threads on some German forums, with some very useful reference pics, along with my own design changes mainly to suit the materials to hand and my own limitations.

Tyres came from here, took me ages to find!: Tyres with foams (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4x-Monster-Pneus-Roues-4xMousse-1-10-Seben-R1-Offroad-/400175487668?pt=FR_YO_Jeux_RadioComRobots_Vehicule sRadiocommandes&hash=item5d2c515ab4)

I know what you mean, it took ages to decide on which gear motors to use and I do prefer the look of the centered ones I have.
They are a bit longer than the RB35 ones so I have had to offset the wheel centers.

I just hope they are upto the job!

This a really cool build. I've seen the Blocher kits, and I always thought they were nice. I am sure those kits inspired you, and there is nothing wrong with that! I like the simple, clean, and functional chassis design. Those gearmotors have a definite advantage over the ones used in the Blocher kits. I like how the output shaft is centered in the planetary head. Where did you find motors like these? Are they as powerful, or more powerful then the ones that the Blocher kits run?

I posted where to get them earlier in the thread, they were quoted as 2.6kg/cm
I don't know what torque the Blocher ones have, I think they are made by Modelcraft.

Not much of an update, I made a new bottom plate for the rear, I wasn't happy with the original, also got the lift servo mounted, will swap this for a high torque one later, some goodies arrived so I fitted the lower bearing for the swivel:

I've fitted a 10K pot to the steering pivot, not the best pic but you get the idea:

http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/ovj99/JD9530/PICT0083_zpse0916e1f.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/ovj99/media/JD9530/PICT0083_zpse0916e1f.jpg.html)

It's connected to a special speed control which makes it work like a big servo, it doesn't self centre completely, wondering if I need to change the pot for different resistance:confused: it does however provide limits to the travel just like a servo, so no problem with stalling out the motor against the stops:cool:

Thanks Nate, I machined a flat on each end of the shaft and they are set screwed in place for now, there's enough meat there to drill and pin if required.

Its a metal geared servo rated at 15Kg/cm stall @6v 13kg @4.8v

My lift arms are 60mm long and the crank is the same length as the servo arm so should stall at around 2kg if my maths is right? long time since i've done those sort of claculations!
Should be way more than I plan to use anyhow.

Some pics of the steering setup.

The 10k pot fitted to the steering pivot:

http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/ovj99/JD9530/IMG_3186_zps219430d2.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/ovj99/media/JD9530/IMG_3186_zps219430d2.jpg.html)

This is the speed controller, 3 wires go to the pot, 2 to the motor, 2 to the battery and the other 3 to the receiver. Its less than an inch square and 1/4 inch thick:

http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/ovj99/JD9530/IMG_3189_zps5981ba00.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/ovj99/media/JD9530/IMG_3189_zps5981ba00.jpg.html)

Started on the wiring, I'm using jst connectors so its all "plug & play" and all the electronics are mounted to a removable plate, so far I have 4x speed controllers (1x throtle, 1x steering, 2x for the implement I plan on making;)) and a ubec. Next is the sound unit, speaker and lights, hope it all fits:eek:

Thanks Ken, yes your right the tyres loose grip before the motors stall, so thinking of adding more weight. Maybe in the wheels???
It weighs about 4kg at the mo.

You must be quite pleased seeing your hard work & great planning in motion. Well done Stu

Is the start up adjustable so it doesn't take so long? ...I like my stuff to start at the touch of a key. ;)

Yes I love it when a plan comes together :D

All the sounds are adjustable on the pc, then you load them onto a micro sd card and put the card in the sound module.

It has 2 sounds for starting, a "cold start" & a "warm start" with an adjustable timer for how long to wait when stopped before reverting to the "cold start"

I must have it set for Artic conditions  I need to do more tinkering with the sound files.

Looks and works nice, Stu. Great job with the lights and with fitting all the necessary electronics in such a small space. I like the front speaker placement too. What are your thoughts on the wheel motors, now that you've had a chance to run them?

Thanks Nate, I'm pleased with the speaker as well, although it does loose a lot of volume when you close the bonnet, sorry, hood :p

May need to cut some slots in the grill to let the sound out???

The motors are great, maybe not as smooth starting as the modelcraft ones but seem to have good power and as I said above, the tyres loose traction before the motors are anywhere near stalling. For the money and the fact they are centered, I would recommend them.

Thanks for all the compliments, still more to come ;)

Nice and tidy. Good job on the electrical wiring. That's one thing that definitely pays off when you take your time to get it right. Looking forward to some more video!

I know what you mean, I hate messy wiring:eek:

Peeing it down today so managed to finish the wiring and shoot a quick indoor vid, been playing around with different engine sounds too, let me know what you think.

nice job - it's not uncommon for the big tractors to only have a towing eye. 3 point hitch is used for implements which need to be lifted, which is frequently not the case for the large ploughs and seed drills that require high towing forces. I'd be looking to get that tipping trailer to work first :D

Thanks ricm, I know what you mean but I still like the idea of a working hitch, must be a european thing:)

The trailer is on the to do list, I want to make a new ally chassis for it, need to get the tractor finished first though.

The rose joints, clevis's and brass arrived so found some time this week and cranked up the mill:

Awesome. I get distracted a lot too, Stu, but your 3 point hitch looks right at home on the back of the tractor. RC4WD Gelande? Those scale 4x4 trucks are a lot of fun!

And fitted some flashing beacons:

I have also set one of the channels on the usm-rc2 to EKMFA and am controlling this with switches on the Taranis.
The Taranis is programmed to send a set number of pulses depending on which function you want on/off.

Time for an upgrade to the JD,
New electronics, a servonaut s22 for forwards/backwards and a servonaut mfx for the steering.
Also new wheels and tyres which at 350g heavier per wheel will add 1.4kg to the total weight of the tractor, will make some brass wheel weights later if it needs them...

Are the tires hollow? Add lead shot for lots of weight gain.

Stuart
01-31-2019, 11:53 AM
The tyres are solid which is where the extra weight comes from, I will try it with the added 1.4kg to start with then make some brass wheel weights later.

Hey Stuart, looking forward to the finished upgrade. They are never really completely done, are they? Would you mind sharing where you got those tires and wheels? I need some, but can't find'em on this side of the pond.

Thanks,

Stuart

Thanks guys,

No Rob I don't think they are ever quite finished....
The tyres are from Trankl (https://www.formenbau-traenkl.de/shop/felgen-reifen.php) mine are the Michelin Axiob 900/60 soft version, they are very soft and should be grippy not sure if he ships to the US.
The wheels for them I bought from Anders Kolpen in Denmark who is a member on here, he made the mould for the tyres too and had Trankl make them, they now make/sell them in there shop.
The wheel centers I made myself as the ones Anders supplied are not suitable for mounting on the 9530, I actually bought the wheels/centers and tyres for a future project but decided the 9530 could use the upgrade.

Anyhow, its all back together and heres the pics along with my future project (hopefully!)
