Well after much deliberation I decided on a new radio and ordered a FRSKY Taranis, it arrived today:D

It uses the Open Tx software and is 16 channel with either sbus or bind 2x 8ch receivers for full independant 16 channels.
You can even add an external module to get a total of 32 channels:eek:

With its umpteen switches, sliders and pots its going to do more than I want at the fraction of the cost of a dx18

Got some learning to do now with the open tx software!

Cheers

$180 sounds pretty cheap for such a sophisticated radio, but I guess electronics are getting cheaper all the time... I just got two 47" flat screen TV's this summer for less than $500 total w/taxes in, where as just a few yrs ago another 0 would have been added.

It'll be great to hear your opinions of it in the future for its ease of programming & abilities. ;)

Ha ha! yes they had a few problems with the early ones, mine is from the latest batch with an upgraded battery.

Electronics certainly have come down in price.

Did a little mixing this afternoon to see if it would work ok with the mfu.

Here's a short vid:

Will do

nice piece of kit well worth £ 180 euros

Certainly is!

Got some more goodies today, another X8R receiver (with pcb antennas) an sbus to pwm decoder (allows you to connect normal servos/esc to the sbus port) and a little gadget for setting the channels on the sbus:

http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh580/ovj99/Taranis/IMG_3207_zps89993764.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/ovj99/media/Taranis/IMG_3207_zps89993764.jpg.html)

This will give 12 fully independent channels, all programmable, from one receiver, you can add another sbus decoder to give 16ch but you may as well use 2x rx's together in that case.

I've been playing around with the mixes & flight modes etc to enable the sticks to control one set of 4 servos and with the flick of a switch a different set of 4, another filck and 4 more

Awsome Stu ..been looking into this radio latley and found one in stock in mode 1 ..within about 8 hours it was gone as well .now they are back odered for almost a month .seem like a very popular radio these..there has been a few gitches that have seemed to be worked out ..How is yours working and are you pretty happy with it .? I am needing something with alot of channels for the grader build so this may be my choice for now ..A radio and 2 X8R receivers should do the job for under $300

Nobody has them in Europe either, there seems to be a very high demand which they can't keep up with! If you see another one available, jump on it!

Its a fantastic radio and I am over the moon with mine :D

Don't worry about which mode you get as you can change to which ever mode you like in the software, also whip the back cover off to change between ratchet/self centering.

I would recommend downloading the companion 9x software before getting your radio and have a play around with mixes etc. You can then simulate the transmitter using the software to see if it works the way you want.

Theres lots of tutorials on youtube too.

32 channels (with external module & 4x rx's) should be enough for most models:eek:
