I am almost ready to send these out to be powder coated so I thought I should post up some pictures and provide a little explanation of what you would be getting should any of you choose to buy one of my kits.

The price on these is $725US each, plus shipping. To calculate shipping cost, my postal code is V9Z0K5. When packaged, one box weighs just under 3kg and the box size is roughly 50cmx29cmx24.5cm. I may consider doing some custom boxes or modifications but that can be discussed with the individual if the need arises.

The boxes themselves are hand made, all aluminum and are TIG welded together. I press out the sides of the box but that is it. The rest of the pieces are cut out, bent in a manual brake and individually hand fitted before welding. I have been messing around with a couple of different cab protector designs but generally this is something that isn't too difficult to change while building to meet what the customer wants. Of course every time I build something new it takes more time so it may increase the price slightly. Tailgate latches are mechanical therefore they do not require any wiring or extra channels on your TX/RX.

The frames and drives are made up of a few different machined aluminum pieces and are bolted together.

The screw drives consist of a small 6V gear motor and a piece of ACME thread. I use ACME thread not only because it is more course to speed up the dump speed but it is also stronger and the square cut threads shoulder a load better. The down side is that it is much more expensive than going with a normal NC type thread. I am not running limit switches on the shafts so some care and attention will have to be taken when reaching the limits of travel in each direction. I may decide to add these at a later date but for now it seems that most of the people I have spoken with don't find them necessary.

I have installed this kit onto my own KH with only modifying one cross member(you need to remove the rib on the one ahead of the X member). The "prop rod" fits between the X member and the modified cross member. If you are running aftermarket frame parts the kit may not fit "as is" and will most likely need to be modified. The rear hinge mounts using factory holes and the rear bumper supplied with the kit. You must provide an ESC and be able to solder your own wires to the gear motor. It should also be noted that you cannot mount your battery between the frame rails behind the cab as it will most likely interfere with the prop rod.

After that long winded explanation, here is what I have nearly completed on the bench...

The one in the middle without side boards is the same as what you see on my KH with the exception that I have reduced the rear overhang by 1/2". It fits a stock height or slightly raised(1/4") cab.

The other two are virtually Identical to each other, and have a slightly higher cab guard(different shape too) and side boards. All three use the same frames and drives.

These ones are finished now and ready to be disassembled for their trip to the powder coater. If anyone is interested now would be a good time to pick a color. I will most likely have them done in silver or black unless someone has a suggestion?

I also have these bumper choices to choose from for anyone interested in a box.

Hey Lou, I swear that thing wasn't covered in finger prints when I boxed it up! The raised cab guard looks good on the Pacific.

I should note that Lou bought just a box and tailgate so that he could decide if he wanted to run either a screwdrive or hydraulic setup of his own design.

I am more than willing to build them for others this way at less than half the cost of a complete kit. This setup would ship without powder coat because the buyer will most likely be modifying the body for mounts ect.

Total cost on a box and gate would be $300CAD + shipping.

Thanks, Reg

Here's mine... half of it anyway. Simple as pie to put on the trk, just how I like it. :D

The pup needs a little more work than just adding the box.

I picked up half of my things from the powder coater yesterday. I'm never one to brag about the things I make but this box looks awesome in gloss black! I have another one being done in silver(slightly different design and a different silver than on my KH) so it will be interesting to compare the two and get some input. It is very hard to photograph the black well as it looks much different in person. I am going to my local sign shop today to get some reflective decals made like the one I made and put on the lower portion of the box. They will be able to do a much nicer job than me! All the mounts are now coated semi gloss to match the factory frame color too!

Bits and pieces,

Thanks a lot guys.

Picked up the silver one this afternoon. It looks lighter colored in the pictures than it actually is thanks to the flash. It also doesn't show the little bit of metal flake that is actually in the color either. I also made a stop at the sign shop and have them making up some scale reflective tape for me too.

Somebody needs to buy one of these and slip it under their Christmas Tree!

I think it's the ticket! Even if you don't like the color, all you have to do is scuff it and paint over it. It's the perfect undercoat if you ask me. It hides little imperfections and finger prints wipe right off not like the raw aluminum too.

The local shop has nearly 50 colors in stock with access to about 100 more. Of course the special order colors are not cheap.

I still have one more box just like the black one that is uncoated if someone was interested and wanted to pick a color.

I picked up the reflective decals today and put them on. These boxes are ready to go! For anyone interested in what I am building, don't think that you have to buy what I have already made! I am not outsourcing this work and can make changes very easily to the length(0"-16.5" not including cab protector), width and height of these boxes! In many cases it won't even change the price. At $700 Canadian dollars, you will not find a comparable piece!

Looking good Reg. Just a suggestion, but you could probably eliminate the upper stop as the load usually goes out around 45 degrees. I never put the upper on mine as working with the upper island gang it's all about the cycle time from load to dump. If the box is not down when you're back to the pit they get cranky as heck!!!

Yeah I would agree Rob. I don't really think it is all that necessary unless you have a little one or a Noobie at the controls. The lower switch will be nice to have though for sure! I'm looking forward to putting this through it's paces in Campbell River in a couple weeks!

Check back to the first page to see Joe's GL with a widened out version of my dump beds installed. We just changed the head board to make it fit. I am not entirely sure if Joe is running a GL frame in that truck but I could build a box to fit even if it isn't. I would just need some accurate measurements.

It was a king hauler frame... but with an unusual motor trans combo that sticks out a ways from the back of cab, precise box length measurement was given from where the original Tamiya 5th wheel holes are for a factory fitment with no extra holes drilled. Reg done it exactly how I wanted it. ;)

A suggestion for mounting hyd cyls to your box Reg, add a flat piece at the top of the well to form a pocket & a square piece of plastic to keep the cyl feet together... it'll make quick work to lift the box for batt change or repairs or box removable.

This is what I have been building for the last 8 days...:( Knowing that I have some builds to complete that I was short parts for and a new project or two to start on, I figured that I should get some inventory stocked up! All tolled there are over 200 holes with close to 150 of them threaded(some parts not shown). All the parts are manually machined so to say that I am ready to build some different stuff is an understatement! I thought it would only take 3 days but other non RC related work has pulled me away from time to time and the parts have taken longer than I thought to make. I can't wait to build some boxes:D! I love that part because that's what gets noticed:cool:!

The box in the background is almost ready to see some powder coat and a new home if anyone is interested...

I picked this one up from powder coating yesterday and reassembled it last night. It is ready to go with limit switches if anyone is interested in owning it. Add this and a cheap esc to your stock chassis day cab truck and you'd be set to start hauling. $700 Canadian works out to less than $625US at the current exchange rate so it's a super deal for US customers!

The Canadian dollar is sitting just below 85 cents US this morning. That means this box at $700CAD is roughly $595US plus shipping. Sadly, after this one my pricing will be increasing slightly to compensate for the added cost of materials traded in US dollars. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Thanks very much. I wish I didn't have to but everything in Canada is getting more expensive again because of the exchange rate. Great for exporting but bad for importing I guess(or even buying a loaf of bread). One way to look at it is that even though my price in CAD dollars is going up, it will still be less in US dollars than when I started a year or so ago. The worst part is that the price increase doesn't put anymore into my pocket:(.

It's not something you see here very often on real trucks. I'm not sure what it's really needed for, I just try to build what I'm asked. It looks like something that would get bent or torn off on a 1:1 in this area but we don't have drop axles or any of that stuff either. Just good old tandem dump trucks....Most of which look well used within a very short time.lol

Bo Wallen
11-23-2015, 09:01 PM
The spill plate is mostly used for asphalt when backed up to a paving machine,
preventing asphalt from flowing over the hopper in front of the paving machine when tipping. And it protect the rear end of the truck, mud flaps and lights. :)

RCP57
11-23-2015, 09:07 PM
That makes sense. The last truck I noticed one on was dumping asphalt into a hopper on the paving machine. I see lots of trailers have them and I assumed it was to protect the goodies on the back since they are so flat on the rear panel. Tail lights right below the tailgate without protection not good one...

Not that I own anyone an explanation on why I asked Reg to put a spill plate on my box, but this is how the dump truck that we have here are. As mentioned above it's to divert whatever material that we may be carrying away from the rear undercarriage of the truck. Especially when carrying loads of stones. But, I am sure that you already knew that.

I have been busy working on this pair KH boxes for the last few days. I believe one box is sold but the other is up for grabs($725US). As per usual it comes with all mounting hardware and limit switches on the lift. An ESC or battle switch of your choice is required to run the motor. If someone is interested let me know and we can discuss powder coat color. I may take the chance and have it done black this week though as that seems to be the most popular.

Click on the open public img then copy past the img to the post here
Sometimes you may have to hit the instert icom and the img the reveiw before posting
You may have to remove one of the http://
Once you have a open img right click mouse - click on copy image location and copy past to here

What's the purpose of the spill plate?... hauling moist dirt, it'll interfere with the tailgate closing & the door won't lock

It's as asphault apron, it prevents the hot mix from damaging the rear of teh truck while dumping into the paving hopper. we use those a LOT here in Washington state for our paving projects. Ours have rubber sides, instead of metal, so they will flex a bit, if they encounter an obstacle, rather then tear up the apron.

During this winter, since it'll slow down for us that work for companies that primarily pave, in WA state, I plan to build a King hauler, & customize it to a dump truck. What would be the cost, to have you fab a dump bed that's a SUPER SOLO box? I'd like said box to be equipped with hydraulic arms for the rear Axle, AKA MAXLE, &/or STRONG ARM, depending what company manufactured it.

Here in Washington State, we can legally gross 82,000 on 7 axle super dumps, versus the 65,500 with a conventional 3 axle truck. The alternative, 105,500 with a truck & pup combination that has 8 axles, netting around 32ish tons of product. Since the SUPER DUMPS can generally net 24-25ish tons of product, NOT have to drop & hook a trailer each round to dump asphalt into the paver, & can do 3 round trips to the truck & pup's 2 rounds, they make sense for companies here.

skeeter
07-21-2017, 12:49 AM
I can send pictures, & measurements, if you need them for the build

skeeter
07-21-2017, 12:51 AM
The 3 axle trucks can net, legally between 14.75-16 tons, depending upon the tare weight. I forgot to put that into the comparison above.

I just looked at a few pictures of this contraption and it's definitely complicated. I'm not sure if I would even want to tackle it honestly as it looks like it would take a ton of hours to get it all working. I think finding a dollar figure that made us both happy would be difficult on this one. It would be a one of a kind build though that's for sure.

It looks like a fun challenge to build, but the hydraulics on the Maxle would be a nightmare and most likely a mess.

Is this something you'd consider taking on as a custom build?

I DON'T have the appropriate tools to do that kind of work. I WISH I had the room to stuff COOL tools like brakes, rollers, lathe, CNC, & a welder that is capable of welding aluminum, but I just don't have room in the tiny garage space I have. If I had a welder capable of welding on aluminum, I might could try my hand at it, but I don't.

Shoot me a ballpark estimate via PM, &/or E-mail, if you'd like. I just may take you up on an offer. I know that this would be a P.I.T.A. to build, & require many man hours. If not this project, perhaps you'd entertain the though of a transfer trailer, & custom Trk box to go with it. Here's a link to a BAD day driving a transfer truck. The trailer tub is SUPPOSE to slide right into the back of the Trk box, either in, or out SMOOTHLY. The transfer chain on the trailer, that makes it all function is stretched, & binding while the operator tried to make it transfer.

The drive for the trailer chain could be driven via a servo, much like you Bruder D11 Cat conversion.

Either the transfer trailer, & CUSTOM Trk box to match it, or the SUPER DUMP, I'd be highly interested in, as I drive both, depending the day &/or job we will be doing that shift. I also drive the 7, &/or 8 axle Trk & pup combinations, as well depending the jobsite we are working at. Occasionally some Side dump work is in my week too.
