This will be a 6x6 Pete with a custom dump body (by Reg Clark). I am building this truck for the Wife to drive, (Yup, I'm one of those rare lucky ones :D) and she has requested an all Black Pete with some chrome on her to somewhat resemble what I used to drive years ago.
I'm getting together most of the pieces parts now, so I'll soon start the build.

Looks great John. You picked some nice goodies out for this project truck. I've got a couple of the same axles and I haven't run them yet, but they are very solidly built. The rims and tires look very nice as well. Are the breathers sitting off to the side from the same company?

JohnStilwell

Thanks,
I hope it turns out like I am imagining. Yes, the axles are really stout and heavy too plus at 3.09:1, it's a little more reduction, always helps. The breathers are stock, just painted to match the truck color with some chrome accents lines, I also did the side mirror covers too. Not sure if I'm going to do the side steps & fuel tanks with a color-chrome theme yet. Stacks are stock too, just cut at 40 degrees.

How did you connect your locker cables to the locker arm? Solder on a small connector on or just use the wire itself somehow? What servo torque are you using for the lockers?

who makes those axles?

Thanks Reg! The dump body looks awesome so far!! You are a master builder....

The Axles are from RCBRMIN (Hong Kong). All Aluminum, steel gears, BB. Just plan on doing some mods to mount the front axle, as it is the same design as the rears. Look into Integy for the front axle as it has the correct mounting design and are the same gear ratio as RCBRMIN's. I found out the hard way when I looked in the instructions at the front axle and had to order the Integy's. They only offers either all chrome or black w/chrome accents or chrome w/black accents, nothing a little paint won't fix thou.

Here are some progress pics of Reg's custom dump body he's building for me. He is awesome!!!!!!

Thanks for the props John. I hope you and the wife are this excited when you see the finished product. You have to give yourself credit here as well because it is your design! I'm just trying to make your CAD drawings come to life the way you imagine them to be. I am enjoying the challenge of trying to follow a drawing:confused::D...something I have never done before!

I'm working on it again today so you should get some updates later if all goes to plan!

The mailman was busy today. Lots of new stuff: antennas, front bumper, locker servos, Pete Emblems, Tamiya highlift trans parts, Tekinn ESC, etc:
I stand corrected...for those wanting to know the Ingegy front axle is a bust, the axle mounts are not spaced correctly for the King Hauler frame springs, don't waste your money unless you want to do some serious modifications to make it work. Save yourself the headache and get the Tamiya highlift springs (they have holes in the springs) that match the front RCBRMIN axle holes.

Looking good John. What is the extra steer axle for?

OK so I re-read your post... One of the front axles doesn't fit the frame even with the different springs or am I just more confused?lol

JohnStilwell
01-06-2014, 09:14 PM
Reg, you are right, the Integy axle mounts are not correctly spaced for the stock leaf springs on the King Hauler frame, they are too narrow. The RCBRMIN axles are perfect if you use the Tamiya F350 or Tundra highlift springs.

Thanks for the kind words John. I appreciate you guys giving me the opportunity to build this for you!

Here's a little update that John hasn't seen yet....Hope you don't mind me posting some pictures.

John's box has a few more things that are missing but I hope to have it finished in the next few days. This is the most complex box I have built to date and it(they) have been very time consuming but I think it shows in the details....

Yes, she knows, lol. She has actually had some imput on the build, Her requests were:
gloss black Pete cab with a few chome accents on the cab: side mirrors black w/chrome hangers, black tanks and breathers w/ chrome hanger straps, chrome lights, air horns, straight angled cut stacks, geared really low, Alum rims, and axle lockers, a realistic East Coast style black dump body (in satin) that has spreader chains with hooks and spreader bar. Wow, who could ask for more, a true trucker wife!!!

This is about the best I can do John short of a fairly major redo since it was already welded in place. I took a 50/50 shot at what was going to look right to you and I missed! I hope you and your wife aren't too disappointed.:( I think it will look pretty good once the side plates are on.

I have built two of these to help spread out the extra costs of my labour and materials. This is not something that I will build and sell through my vendors section but one is still up for grabs if anyone is interested.

Update:

I finally got the front together. The Highlift leaf springs are about 3/4" eye-to-eye longer than the stock King Hauler, so I had to drill new holes for the rear spring hangers about 1/2" toward the rear and redo how the front spring mounts are done, I used the metal front shock mounts and one of the metal body angle pieces and mounted the shock hangars to it. Drilled a couple of holes and screwed this angle piece to the front plastic cross member where the servos mount. Doing this keeps the tires centered in the wheel well and the axle is at the correct stock height.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd32/john_stilwell/Pete%20Hauler/axle2_zps0957903d.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/john_stilwell/media/Pete%20Hauler/axle2_zps0957903d.jpg.html)

I am going to have to mount the steering servo like this, right up against the front bumper, due to the large hogs head needing room when the front suspension compresses. I will lay the trans servo flat in the space left between the tranny and the steering servo.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd32/john_stilwell/Pete%20Hauler/axle7_zpse2043e19.jpg (http://s222.photobucket.com/user/john_stilwell/media/Pete%20Hauler/axle7_zpse2043e19.jpg.html)

Yes, a mini servo fits with plenty of space and stays out of site when the box is down. The space is just over 2"x2"x5/8. Hopefully I can get the frame mounts and other stuff done tomorrow. There is a wind storm starting here now that will likely knock down a tree somewhere and cause our electricity to go out for a bit. Fingers crossed that it doesn't!

Front axle and steering mounted and working. I had to notch the frame for the servo ball connection so it could move to the right at 45 degrees:

Rear axle Locker servos mounted and connected, minor frame notches to clear the servo travel here as well. I have decided not to servo control the front locker, but it can be added later if I need it.

Tight squeeze, but the driveshaft clears the locker servos with a little room to spare:

Just what you see in the first section of pics, filling in the back where the sleeper was cut off. I'm not planning on changing the fenders or anything else.

I received the dump box today that I had Reg build for my wife's Pete. All we can say is WOW!!! This dump body is awesome!! Reg has done a superb job building this for us, we couldn't be happier!! He even added a surprise logo "Martha's Heavy Hauler" on for us, (yup she's tickled pink, loves chrome and black)!! Now all I need to do is finish painting the cab and put it all together. We're expecting snow here tomorrow, so painting will have to wait a few days.

Here's the dump body

I fixed up her 2013 Jeep a little last fall, an all black theme thou. (Wished I had the money to drop a Hemi in it too)

Well, I'm definitely not as talented as a lot of other people on this forum, but my wifes Pete is mostly finished, just a few things to clean up. It's not exactly correct for a Pete, but it's close enough for us. Reg's dump box works perfectly!! It's easy to mount, bolts right on the stock frame, built very solid and looks awesome. Thanks Reg!!
Now all I need is a loader so I can go get her dirty lol

Bump, for an awesome built truck. I love the black everything, with some aluminum and chrome, the dump bed, and black matching hubs on the rims. The whole drivetrain is sweet too. Has me wanting to start another project, even though I do not need another project!

I agree with Nathan. This is a great build by John. Maybe it's the tires and rims but the more I look at it, the more I think scale art type build.

I re read the thread John and I had to chuckle. My wife wanted the same thing! What is it with women wanting black Pete's with chrome accents?

Any more recent pics to share with us John? :)

Guys, thanks for all the compliments, it has been fun building this Pete for the wife, but you know women, they like to change there minds. LOL
When I got my Bruder Mack to do my dumper conversion, she really liked the cab, (I think the bulldog had something to do with it) so with that being said...
Her Pete has now been stripped to the rails and will be transformed into a Mack. Originally we planned on building two identical Macks, but we got to thinking it would be nice to be able to haul using both boxes per driver, so we have decided on converting her Pete into a Mack and the shorter dump box into a pup trailer.
I will post pics as soon as I get started. We recently purchased a used stove and an Eastwood Hotgun, so we can now do powder coating. Getting paint to stick to aluminum is like painting an icecube !!!

Man, that's a really tuff decision Claus. I know it would look better without it as a pup, but then again if I ever decided to make a second Mack dump truck.... Arrrrgh I just don't know what to do!!! I don't think it looks that bad with it on. Really hard decision to chop up one of Reg's masterpieces!!

Well :p:p:p you could just roll up a tarp and strap it down on the pup cab guard.

I look at this build all the time. I really like it, especially before the Bruder Mack conversion. Don't get me wrong, I'm defiantly a fan of Mack trucks but just liked the way this one looked all black and King Hauler. Reg's box is beautiful! 6X6 and lockers, that's awesome.

Wouldn't this make for a very slow truck? 80T, GRU and large spur gear.
