I have been slowly working on this for a customer but I do plan to make this a regular production piece if there is any interest. The trailer started out as a Tamiya flatbed which I shortened slightly at the rear. The customer also wanted add a third axle so he ordered a drop axle from Exclusive RC and I mounted it up. I modified the axle assembly slightly so that it was the same width as the stock axles(duals on all axles) and everything looks just right. The box will be dumped using a screwdrive setup with limit switches. I am building another box at the same time that is slightly different. It has angled bends resembling the shape of a rain gutter. I will post up pictures of it when I get a little more done on it. It does not have a home yet and will go up for sale as soon as it's finished.

Thanks Guys. It will be a while before it's up and running Justin but I will for sure post some video when the time comes.

I'm not absolutely sure on a total price yet Wayne but I'm thinking that a tandem axle setup will be around $1050-1100CAD. That would be the complete deal, powder coated whatever color, and ready to be wired up to an ESC and power supply. Added axles or details such as ladders, spare tire mounts or whatever would be a little more. This customer has been great and sent me the brand new trailer so that I could modify it as needed and send it back when it is completed. If someone else wanted to do the same then of course the cost of the trailer would come off of the total price(around $250CAD). If I could get the trailers cheaper then my price would be less. The best deal I have been able to find is RC4WD at $189.99US plus shipping and exchange. Anyone know of anything cheaper?

Thanks very much for the compliment and for shipping the lift axle my way. Yep, Keith is a good(and patient) man. This is the second project I have done for him as he is already running one of my dump boxes on a truck. It's a sweet lookin rig too....Too bad he hasn't posted any pictures of it on here...hint hint!lol

Tower Hobbies sells the trailers at that same price, but free shipping (domestic) for tower hobbies members. if you have coupons available, it could be as cheap as $173.99 shipped.....I just picked up a reefer for $339 shipped via tower :bounce:

This is going to be a beautiful trailer once she's done...I see these trailers popping up at truck shows all over in the near future...I plan on getting one myself, but one thing at a time first.:p;):p..

Nice Job

Here's a bit of an update on this. I finished up the fenders and started on the frame underneath. Once the frame is finished I will make the tailgate and then get started on the dump mechanism.

Between other shop work, fairly steady commercial fishing since January, a couple of personal projects, and some recent speed bumps in the road of life I really haven't made much progress on the two trailers I have committed to over the past few months. I have to be honest and say that I have struggled a little with what to use and how to use it as far as the lift is concerned. Maybe my personal expectations are too high for function vs. looks or maybe they aren't? I have come up with a lift now that will tip 20lbs of evenly distributed gravel without too great of an issue at a reasonable speed. Do you guys think that is respectable or should I be going for more?

Any guess as to how heavy 1.5 gallons of that is? I am thinking that what I was testing with is close to that volume but I'm not sure. I only weighed it...

Thanks for the input guys. I kind of thought this may require more power so I had ordered a more powerful motor a few weeks ago. Since I had to make new brackets to mount the shaft and motor in it's revised location I thought I might as well try the better motor while I was at it. I am very pleased with the results. Now I can finish up some odds and ends on this one and get some more parts made for yours Alex!

Looking good Reg. Like the style of that one. Water is 10 pounds to the gallon so your lifting good. Since I upgraded the screw drive in the FWD it will lift a 30 lb bag of lead. Like you, I went to a bigger threaded rod 5/16" but instead of a steel nut I made the slider out of delron and taped it with a 5/16 tap. Just amazing how slipery the stuff is and now there's no friction at all.
Rob

RCP57
03-23-2015, 05:06 PM
Thanks Rob. I think it is lifting very well now. I tried one more test using 7.2V just to see if it would still lift the same weight. It does it without a wimper! Of course the speed is much slower but that may be a decent compromise over running a dedicated battery for the trailer itself.

Well, I think I have had this project on and off my work bench(tailgate) for nearly 10 months now:(. I have spent most of the last two days finishing up the last details and I can now happily say that it is ready to go! Initially this was supposed to be powder coated but the owner has since sold the trailer to a buddy so that we can work on something else together and now it will be polished. I'm not sure how much work it will take to shine this up and it certainly would have been my preference to have it coated but to each his own. If he can pull it off I'm sure it will look great. Anyway, enough babbling... Here it is all ready to go short of one last cleaning before it gets boxed up:bounce::bounce:...

For those that had expressed an interest in buying one of these trailers, I am currently building three of them on modified Tamiya flatdeck chassis'. These will be finished similar to Alex's trailer with flaps, ladders and powder coating. If someone wants one and has some additions they would like to add that can be discussed. Price if finished as planned will be $1250US plus shipping. I am not entirely sure when these will all be finished but I am shooting for sometime in September. If you want to claim one let me know and I will take a small deposit.

Thanks very much, Reg

These projects always take me longer than I think but this one is pretty much ready to be disassembled, cleaned up and sent in for powder coating. I had to take the box off of my KH just to see what the hype is about. I didn't haul any material with it but I did get dirt on the tires. Sorry! I will clean them off.lol

I can't say. It seems to be totally random when I order stuff into Canada from the US. To my knowledge no one in the US has paid any duty on stuff I've shipped but I think UPS does charge some sort of fee. I think Benny said he paid less than $20 but I could be wrong.

when I received my trailer it was only $20

RCP57
09-14-2015, 10:26 AM
Hopefully that is all anyone pays. Near as I know there shouldn't be duty on toy car parts but they could stick you with State/Federal tax on the items value. I always ship smaller, less valuable items(under $1000CAD) through the postal service as they don't charge a "fee" like UPS but you still could get charged tax. In order to ship the trailers with insurance they have to go using a courier.:(

I left the rear panel straight on this one because I think 000 ooo 000 would look perfect but until a buyer comes along I won't be drilling anything just in case they have a different vision. There's only one persons opinion that really matters and that's the one with cash in hand.

Just out of curiosity how long are they. When I first saw these 1/14 truck i always thought they were small until i finally saw one in person. I know the Grand Hauler takes up the size of my dresser. So I wonder how long a truck n trailer combo would be. Especially since I've never seen a trailer now in person. Have to stop looking at this thread. Getting regrets for returning the 2nd Grand I bought for a daycab and dump trailer project I had planned.

The one in the picture is 28 1/2". The first one I built was on the same chassis but the tub was shorter with frame sticking out the front. The biggest I have built is Benny's tri-axle at 36" That maxes out my bender and slip roll so I can't build anything bigger than that without joining pieces together. The size of the last few seems to be the most practical to me but it doesn't really matter what I think only what I can build for the customer.

Not that I wasn't already impressed with these trailers. I was extremely impressed with the performance of Ben and Alex's trailer this last weekend. Lifting an entire bed full of rocks was no issue for these well-built beasts. Savin my pennies so I can get one for myself.

I have to say that I was impressed as well although part of me was a little nervous to see that much weight on them. I can't say how long the threaded shaft and nut will last if the loads are always that heavy. It's good hardware though so if its lubed up and kept clean it should last a while.lol It's a good thing I'm installing those expensive planetary gear motors!

No doubt Reg! Unstoppable! It's probably my imagination but I think they like the abuse! :D There are some decent rocks out in that IL dirt we play in at Nate's and I had him drop a soft-ball sized one out of the Vario's bucket from a couple inches up and it took it like a champ.....and the powder coat shows no evidence.

Awesome trailers, awesome fabricator!

This one finally made it's way into the mail and towards it's new home last week. We made some minor changes to it by adding a ladder to the front, changing the rear pan and flaps, and giving it a coat of velvet black. I think it looks pretty good!

I started building another one of these a few weeks back and I finally have it almost finished. This one is up for grabs and will be powder coated whatever color the buyer chooses should there be one(I hope so:)). I decided to try something different on this one since the last few have been very close in appearance. I like it! It's basically the same round tub as usual but with shorty fenders, no ladders and vertical tail lights. Simple, yet a little different looking. Ladders could be added if desired. There are a few odds and ends that need to be completed but it is very close to being ready for some color. If anyone is interested, please let me know and we can discuss the price...

I have a couple more of these on the go. The long one is for a customer and the other will be put up for sale once finished.

The larger one is 36" which is the max I can roll. My 36" machine is actually too small for this as it puts a lot of strain on it. After a few swear words, one bleeding knuckle and many passes through the rollers using cardboard to make up for them bowing in the center, I got it done. After bending up the other pieces I welded them on. Now they are both starting to look like something.

RCP57
02-03-2016, 09:34 PM
LOL, Maybe they will hire me to make a mini trailer to go with each full size! Yeah, probably not...

I thought I could knock this one out in a week since I had all of the lift parts pre-made but as usual it is taking longer than I hoped. Some of that is because of design changes but sometimes things need to be adjusted as you go along so I've learned to deal with it. I would rather it take longer than I thought and come out right than make it in a hurry and feel like I slapped it together. It would be nice if I could build one per week though. Then I wouldn't feel guilty about taking a whole weekend off!

RCP57
02-04-2016, 08:31 PM
I spent all day working on tarp mech parts. It seems I am being asked to do this more so I am trying to come up with a "system" instead of reinventing the wheel each time. Don't get me wrong, the parts will still be hand made and therefore be time consuming to make but at least I will be able to make multiple parts at once for my stockpile.

Yesterday I quickly made some pulleys and today I started out bending up two frames and making a template. I then machined up some motor mounts and began assembling pieces. It takes a fair bit of time to make all of this stuff from scratch so hopefully some of these parts will get me through a few trailers.

Haha, it wasn't the worst that's for sure. It was more involved than I would have guessed but it's not so much that it needed to be difficult, I just don't have the right tools for easily bending a 1/4 round. Once the tub was bent up the rest was actually pretty cool. It's my favorite trailer to date based on looks although I'm in no rush to build another like it. Is it there yet? I haven't checked the tracking.

I think this one id done. Unless I'm forgetting something? Suspension and other details are to be installed when it arrives at it's new home.

Thanks Brandon. I'm gonna quickly finish the little sister to this one and then I will be able to focus on yours 100%. I received the suspension and axles for "lil sis" yesterday so I worked on it last night until I had the frame made and mostly assembled. It will be riding on a tri axle Tamiya setup. I will be looking to sell it once completed. One person is possibly interested but I don't know if they are going to take it yet. More updates to come!

I didn't spend much time in the shop today but I did get the suspension mounted on this one. This is my first time using Tamiya suspension on 3 axles. I made up some new brackets to mount the front axle instead of using the Tamiya tandem piece. I hope to finish it this coming week and get it up for sale.

This trailer didn't really come together that fast as I was building the tub before I started on the last one. I am completely out of lift parts now too so I have to make another run of that before it can be finished. Yes I'm quick, but not that quick. What would be really nice is if it "sold" quick.

This one is ready for powder coat now. I will make the tarp and tailgate latches once it is coated and reassembled. It will also receive a brand new set of stock wheels and tires.

Since it is a tri axle and has a tarp I will be looking to get $1500US plus shipping for this one. There are a number of powder coating options available so that can be discussed. I would be willing to add ladders to each side as well if desired.

Also reg, just a suggestion, (not that your trailer need any improvement at all) but if you want to do something a little different on one of your tub trailer builds, make the trailer fenders two parts like in this photo of a Hilbilt Mongoose (over the trailer tires and over the tractor tires but nothing in the middle). It adds another set of mudflaps, I dig the look. Also the chains over the mudflaps!!

Stock tanks on the JCR KH. The chrome is just in bad shape so it makes them look like aluminum.lol Jason did a good job of moving things around, it's just too bad the first owner took such poor care of the truck. It was in rough shape when Jason got it.

I keep thinking about building a trailer with that style fenders on the truck end. All someone has to do is ask me to do one...:D

I have been working on these for way too long thanks to a vacation given to me by my milling machine. Anyway, I have been forging ahead and finally got these two finished up today. The trailer on the right with front ladder and vertical tail lights is sold but the other is up for grabs($1225USD plus shipping). They are built on Tamiya flatbed chassis and suspension. Both trailers will have brand new stock tires and wheels installed before shipment. These are my "under construction" wheels and tires on them in the pictures.
