And the excavator finally wore out the second set of track drives, was just going to order new motors but not in stock,,, and they are not a true planetary gear but a spur gear reduction. I've been messing around with this idea for some time and never went anywhere with it. Well now I have from necessity. I had these small planetary gear reduction motors laying around and decided to put them to use. I will not know if they are strong enough until they are installed. I did a simple test in a vise and they are way too fast. I have the 195 rpm ones, should have the 27(? Forget the number off hand) rpm ones tomorrow. Some progress on them.

Broke a m3 tap , hand taps are not the best for the machine. But I did get it out and able to use part. First time I ever successfully removed such a small tap.

Will probably make new ones of these as I can get them a little more snug and also messed up on the chamfered edge, kind of like a knife edge on them. :(

RW, the motor you are holding looks like the new ones I put on my little Oliver Dozer? I was under the impression that they are planetary? I think servo city advertising indicates planetary and they cost a bit more than the spur gear version.

Man, the indoor area would be COOL! I would love to have something like that!

I may have confused the situation. Yes Jim these ones are true planetary reduction motors. The ones I was referring to were the original ones from the excavator, and the replacement (same) ones sold on rc4wd under spare parts for the excavator. Those are spur gear reduction motors. I'll try and post some more pics (if pb doesn't delete them) of the whole workings.

Oh wow! I never knew of such a devise!! What evil genius came up with that!?!?!! I bet he was bald, pulled his hair out from scrapping parts with broken taps, then developed this!! Lol!!! Can't grind/drill/pull it out just liquefy it!! Brilliant!! Thanks for sharing Steve, and nice find. Now just remember you have it next time you break something:). Would be neat to see it used.

The new parts look great!

That's really interesting, i had no idea that was even a tool! So it's a water cooled vibrating arc cutter that blows the center web out of the broken tool and flushes away the particles? Awesome!
I'd played with broken tap extractors, and seen how to use alum if you have a couple days to disolve tap.

I think Cooper has a point.. "No Mr Bond, i expect you to die. My henchman will see to that while he removes your tap."

If you use roll taps (form taps) they have a lot less tendency to break. The kicker is they really only work in machines, not by hand. Also the typical tap drill chart your probably using is calling for 75% thread. By using bigger tap drills you can go all the way down to 55% thread. This is usually a must on taps m2 or smaller.

And a picture line up of parts, I did go with the 26 rpm plantaries. 583 oz-in of torque. They have been able to drive up and over my boots with no problem so I may be in for track breakage issues down the road. But speed is excellent. Not fast and not a snail.

I made a cover for motor and wires. I had yellow filiment loaded and made test pieces that need a little tweaking but the final will be very similar.

Hey thanks!! Some tweaking on parts, forgot to add a hole for wires to pass through. And then the motor wires need to be soldered after parts are together. The plastic housing is a little too tight of a fit but they work:) and to my suprize I went up about a 1 1/2 foot incline that was about a 45 degree incline (probably more than that). Steep enough that it was sliding backwards and had to use the bucket to pull it up. Tracks didn't stall. Now I'll have to see how it takes debris in links with sprocket. ?? Hopefully tomorrow I'll get some videos.

And a couple weekends ago had these guys come up and had a blast!! One problem with the hoe, hydraulic line poped and steve n Benny had it back together before I could get things cleaned up!! Thanks guys !! Nice to be able to be doing something else and knowing you guys were fixing it. One of the few times I never had to say how or watch to make sure it was being done correct!!!

Going to be a bit bigger than the 785!! But will fill the haul truck in 6or less scoops. I thought I could use same tires from the haul truck as they are same size radially but found out they are wider so back to making a print for tire mold. Printed 4 pieces (as print bed isn't that big)19 hours for each piece!!
