Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
There aren't many details missing now, Reg, at least not that I can see! Wipers, stack rain caps, window trim, valve handles, grab handles, a chrome horn.... If anything is missing, I can't tell. When you add all the important details that everyone is familiar with, they just assume all the other details are there too. It's looking really nice. Hope you had a great birthday!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks for the link Neil. I'll have to contact one of the outfits making the sound modules and see what they need to make it work.
Thanks Nate, B-day was pretty quiet but that's OK. Getting too old to party anyway!lol The details are almost finished unless I can come up with pictures from a different angle that show something I've missed. Hopefully the decals will turn out close to the originals and I will be a happy guy. Can't wait for the show in Duncan BC...If only I had an era correct cable log loader....Hmmmm Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I have pictures of a line machine...
Looks good:D |

This morning I spent a while cutting out 54 circles and the cutting out the centers...I made a tool out of a nail, piece of wood, razor blade, a screw and a thumb tack. Once I cut out the circles I made another tool to cut out the centers. It took about 6-8 turns to make each cut so that's about 650-800 turns. My wrist is sore now HAHA. I then glued three pieces together for each tire. A long process but the end result is great! The truck and trailer now support a large amount of weight with little squat in the tires yet they still flex when you drive over a rock. Of course when all of this was done I had to take her out for a test:D. This is also the first time I have loaded her outside since shimming the diffs. Reg is happy happy now! Many pics.....:jaw: and of course video...http://youtu.be/ICljl6usiZo http://youtu.be/eyNYXqC6q8E First some pics of my foam production... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6a8638a8.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4b82c9bf.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps70d357af.jpg and then the good stuff! http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb055f898.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps463df381.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psa9747167.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd4b1b11c.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps40350de6.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psee9ed072.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb978667f.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psfd4978d6.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps857e7e09.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps82804bc1.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps93904074.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6d759638.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0c9100b7.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps17c8d63b.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psde268b93.jpg Headlights on in the shop, http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8a169336.jpg Thanks for looking! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
look's great Reg, I tried cutting foam with hole saw's, well AAAARG!
Have you considered putting your cutter in a drill? Yes that truck would sound good with a v-12! Cheer's, Neil. |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
A stamp cutter made from steel shaft in the lathe, one whack of the hammer! :D
Fully loaded, what's the estimated gvw? Your foam inserts, do you think tires would carry 60+lbs? |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Quote:
The truck and trailer are 47lbs and I'm guessing the load is another 40-50lbs. Some of the logs weigh nearly nothing and a couple are probably 6-8lbs minimum(they haven't dried much in the BC liquid sunshine). When I finished changing the foams in the trailer I pushed down on it really hard and there wasn't much bulge in the tires but there is 8 of them so there's a lot of surface area. They are much stiffer than what I used in the Euc though. When are you coming out here Joe? |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Perhaps if you had made the tool, then you could have had a small sideline business punching out a few thousand of these foam circles. :D
Don't know, weather is not cooperating to get my work done as soon as I had hoped. :( |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I guess that's a possibility. The only trouble I see would be trying to make foams for every different size tire(lot of tooling).
Too bad about the weather, I guess if it holds you up too long then you won't make it to the coast?...or maybe you'll be out in July for the show?:D |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, I need enough for 10 of those tires :D Just talking to my wife , told her I need to find that stuff you used .
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
i was wondering what all the circles were for then *lightbulb* he made his own inserts!!
and yes that is a **** sexy truck there!! |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg you have done a great job with the truck and trailer the only thing you need is a little smoke coming out the stacks that is the only thing missing. Keep up the good work and have a good day today and a better one tomorrow. Ed

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
This stuff is cheap @ $10 for a sheet and it has been on sale for $7. Typical of any surplus joint though, they may never have it again...I better hoard it all:jaw:

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
The updated photos look great, Reg! You are a true craftsman. This has been a fun build to watch, and I think that the Kenworth is probably your best work yet, though that is really hard to say for sure. Everything you've built is as impressive, but maybe it's the details that put this one at the top for me.
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
That is one nice looking logging truck. The video is sweet too
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I believe this is my best too... I think it's the one that means the most to me and that's why it turned out better. It didn't really start out that way but as I've worked on it and met some people that were around the real truck I've become sentimental about it. I'm proud of all my stuff but this one makes me smile...:)

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I seen this beautiful truck in person yesterday :jaw: it was more amazing and awesome then the pics show.. and it is a monster and makes my autocar looks like a toy compared to this masterpiece , great job Reg and thanks for showing me all your creations.. simply awesome

I've been following this thread quite religiously, I've been trying to find words to appropriately describe how impressed I am with this truck and you building skills. I have a soft spot for log trucks, which is funny because I drive Fire Trucks for a living! Anyway back on point, All I can think of is purely impressive, amazed, astounded by the shear level of quality and detail!! And to think you MADE all the parts!!!! Sir my hat comes off to you!!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Fine looking truck Reg
Looking forward to seeing it up close LOG loader next ! greg |

I had some visitors come to my shop today. Some retired loggers that either drove and or owned the original KW850 that my truck is modeled after. It was very nice for me to show off the truck to them and get their approval. Hopefully the decals will be done for all of my equipment this week so I can post up some pics. Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I finally made up the cover for the exhaust under the fender. It is bolted on so that I can remove it later if I decide to make smoke...

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Almost finished. I had a local sign shop do up the decals for me. I wasn't able to provide them with very good images of the door decal but the girl spent all day yesterday getting it done but it turned out excellent!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, you've outdone yourself. The truck is truly a work of art. I guess now if I want to see it I'll have to be at the Duncan show. You'll be like a proud papa showing off the new baby. The pictures are great, but they probably don't do it justice like seeing the real model. Looking forward to it, Reg.
