Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Haha I'm not sure about a yarder but hopefully I will be building another piece to haul around soon!

I spent a little more time in the shop working on the trailer early this morning and again this afternoon. I managed to make the over the bunk, hitch-coupling, pivot thingy...Not sure what the real term is:confused: Anyway the front is almost finished so I guess I have to start on the hard part now:(.

PS The bolts will be replaced with proper pins...but you already knew that anyway :)

TIG can be frustrating but works well for our hobby. It produces no smoke or spatter either which is a great thing.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Well I spent most of today working on the rims/hubs for the trailer. I would have had them finished but I didn't realize that I only had two bearings left. I tried to find some at the local automotive shop but had no success so I guess I will get on the phone tomorrow and see if I can find some in Victoria. If not I will have to order some from somewhere and wait:(. Once I get the bearings I will drill out the centers and make the caps.

Todays progress....All together there is at least 6 hours in these four wheels...I know that I am probably pretty slow and that others could build them faster/better but the next time someone asks me why our models are so expensive and how you could possibly have that much time in them, I may just slap them:eek:.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Nice to see a lowboy build from you, Reg! I didn't know these trucks could still handle a lowboy without a 5th wheel plate, and without removing the log bunk turntable. I might not be speaking with the correct wording, but still, that's pretty cool. I don't know a whole lot about these trucks, but was that common practice for hooking up to a lowboy?

I love this truck, I am really enjoying all the details.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Thanks very much guys. I have been too busy the last couple of days to make any progress but I may get something done soon.

Nate, I think it is fairly common with these big trucks. This way any truck with a bunk could tow it instead of needing a specific truck. On the other hand trucks that had preloader log trailers had a fifth wheel so they would that style.

Here's a couple pics of the bunk style hitches. The one trailer doesn't even have a pivot:confused:... It must hammer around pretty good on the bunk.

Come on now, I never get mad...

It started to rain this afternoon and my work was done for the day so I got back into the shop. I was happy because I got to play with my favorite toy(TIG) and stick some pieces together! My plan is to build the entire back half including suspension before I weld it to the rest of the frame.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

I put in a couple more hours on the lowbed today. When I started out on this I told myself that I would build it light and not worry about it being very strong...Well by the time I'm finished it will be heavy as usual and I'll probably be able to give kids rides at the next show. Anyway, I got a bit more done on the ramps so just a couple more things and I will have to start on the suspension.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Thanks Ari! I spent the whole day working on this(almost 9 hours) but I think I got a lot accomplished too! The suspension is nearly finished now so I can weld the two main components together and start making a deck.
Here's a short video of the walking beams and axles after welding them to the frame...http://youtu.be/4BOsjsATX6A

I started out by making the walking beams out of some 1 1/2x1/2 flat bar.
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6d1c22bd.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63aa3896.jpg

I then lathed and milled some pieces for the axles. The axles should be held to the bushings with U bolts but this trailer is meant to work to scale not so much be detailed.
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pse91bd160.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5664a547.jpg

Once everything fit together I decided that it needed more flex so I re-drilled the bushings to a larger size and added some rubber hose.
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8dc36153.jpg

I then welded the pieces to the frame.
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb689ffc7.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2eaf7327.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps82ef961a.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps357c22ac.jpg

Lastly I welded some lugs to the loading ramps.

The firewood is like a piggy bank for me...and you never know when it might get really cold here:rolleyes:.

No video's of loading the Volvo yet but some pictures...I did load and unload the 300 but it will take some practice to be smooth. The tracks run off of switches and are on or off plus my slip ring device has a couple dead spots so its a little ruff...all this while resting my foot on the front of the lowbed so that it doesn't tip up! It's a fairly tough pull with flat tires and no bearings or lube on the axles but it managed.I think it is going to look pretty sweet though once it's finished and painted.

I know that drilling holes in your beloved bunk would kill you, but that would keep it from tipping with some sort of pin? Just a thought. By the way it looks killer!!!!

RCP57 09-23-2013 10:06 PM

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Yeah I will have to pin it on. Most 1:1's have pins or a loop of cable and a shackle or something. I have a lot more work to do on it but just had to try it out to see if it would work:rolleyes:...:D:D

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Thanks guys. I have never had anyone tell me that they have 'firewood envy' before!lol

Modelman, I don't think I build all that fast I just treat every build like a job that pays by production not by the hour...I guess that's how I was raised.lol

I think I figured out a simple solution to my lifting hitch problem. I made up a hook and welded it to the front of the trailer. Then took a piece of cable and looped it through the ring on the center of the bunk. The natural tension in the cable keeps it on the hook and all you have to do is pinch the loop together and it comes off....no drill holes, drill holes!haha I also added some bracing to the hitch, shortened it to the proper length and add some stabilizer blocks that rest on the bunk if the trailer tips too far(not shown in pics).

We only burn about two cords per winter but I enjoy cutting it and the extra keeps the wolf away from the door this time of year.

Clever solution to keeping it held down, but I think Tony B. will be disappointed cause you didn't drill holes! ;)

RCP57 09-26-2013 07:37 PM

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Haha Tony B can help me drill holes in my next project...come to think of it, I would have drilled holes in my truck if I thought that I was going to find gold in it...
No work progress today but I did try to load and haul around my skidder for a bit. It is so nose heavy that the front motor runs out of grunt while trying to crawl up the ramps in reverse. If you load it head first it goes on fine but doesn't fit well on the deck that way. It looks like I really can't drive in the video(really can't) but if I don't start up the ramps crooked the blade hangs up. I guess if I ever finish the hydraulics that shouldn't be a problem... On a positive note though, the cable seems to hold the lowbed on the bunk perfectly!

I think Neil's (doodlebug) suggestion about using some scale railroad ties is a good one. That or maybe back into a burm or ledge. I'm sure it would load easier that way. Just a thought...

RCP57 09-26-2013 09:34 PM

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Haha, I missed the post from Neil so I went back and checked it out...I guess we were posting at the same time kinda. That is a good idea and I did cut extra planking when I made the deck boards thinking that I would need some blocking. I think once the hydraulics are working on the skidder it will be OK. I should be able to push up a bit of material with the blade or even put the blade down while backing onto the trailer for added lift. At any rate it has been fun seeing how things go onto the lowbed...
