Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Yeah Rob it was great to chat with you too! Hopefully I can make the drive up there before too long and check out that kitchen you've been using as an excuse not to finish your RC's:rolleyes:....

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Well now that I know it isn't just my ears that think it sounds like a Jimmy I'll share what it is...
It's actually a twist grip engine noise maker thing that my parents bought for me to have on my first bicycle back in the late 70's. I started looking at it a month ago but couldn't figure out how to fit it in anywhere without cutting it. I was worried that if I modified it too much the sound would change loosing it's "Detroitness" but yesterday I felt that I should give it a go. I had to chop and hack quite a bit off of it so I was a little nervous but I think it sounds great! Of course there aren't any fancy air brake sounds or horns but I didn't have to spend an extra dime on it so I'm happy. I used and old gear motor to spin it, made up a simple adapter hub, and drove it off the spare channel on the Sabertooth ESC. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps91c794f9.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psea0e15d4.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8c424488.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psfb3eb6ff.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb0e36e00.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps68e0701c.jpg Thanks for looking! |

That's what's making the engine sound? Wow!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, the sound system is spot on for a Jimmy V12. All you gotta do is figure out how to throw some shifts in there and you got it made.
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow that sounds great!! I do have to ask if you took a pic of the purring engine sound maker? I new at this but is it possible to hook up to the drive motor with a Parel circuit? Then with each shift it would rev up an idle down right? An as for running at idle tho may need to run an isolated/ dedicated circuit. Nice build!! I plan on reading the whole story tonight.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks John, You probably seen it but I think post 575 shows a picture of the noise maker.
I almost have the lowbed finished. I just need to make up some center caps for the wheels and it's done! I also had to take it for a drive this evening to test out the new tire foams and paint...http://youtu.be/B7A_0q11Z7c http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1c731c9a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps67bb8066.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps28565a91.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7d2605b8.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2e894daf.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pse216b564.jpg |

that sounds cool! definitely a detroit

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
SWEET:D:D:D
Okay check out this link I found. It has all the information you need for your next build :cop: http://www.vannattabros.com/iron20.html My grandpa ran a line machine that was mounted on a off highway truck so it was a self powered chassis and he could literally "cast" or throw the grapples right onto the log within like 40 yards:jaw: and then yard it in and set it on the truck. If you ever want personal pictures let me know. Have fun:bounce::bounce: |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks guys.
Trucker_Jo, Thanks for the link! I will have to spend some time looking at all the stuff on there. I don't think a line machine will be my next project but it is on the list and not too far down. I spent a while trying to get the sound unit to be less 'idling or pinned'. It's a bit of a challenge because the sound unit motor always takes the same amount of throttle for a given rpm where as the truck always varies based on load. I did manage to improve it slightly and I think I am just going to have to be satisfied with how it works. I need to keep in mind that this was something designed for a small kid and a bicycle, not to replicate the sound of an Off-highway Kenworth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep7Ub...tJ-DusnO8Onw7A The onboard shot picks up a lot of background noise from the driveline and also it was quite windy here today. I think if the camera was actually in the cab instead of behind it on the water tank it would sound pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCbCD...tJ-DusnO8Onw7A Thanks for looking |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
The sound unit sounds great. It is a definate improvement over the first videos.
Now its time to start loading it up real heavy and test those differential gears out with some long steep grades.:D It looks like a 350,000 pound load figures to about 350 pounds :jaw: so invite a couple of buddies over and take them for a ride. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Don't encourage me! I don't need to break this truck...I might cry if I do:rolleyes:.
I finished up the lowbeds wheels yesterday... Now what?:confused::confused: http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psbe3cf46d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps64b77af0.jpg |

You built it once, if it breaks, fear not. You can build it again! And don't forget to post pics:lol::lol::lol:;) Mario |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thats what we always say at the RC flying field. If your gonna crash one might as well have it on video.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Amazing truck! Love the plumbing on the frame with the hoses and the over all attention to detail. But I can't wait to see it on some "mountain roads"...great job though!

did you buy those Rims on your trailer or did you make them, as I would like to put aset of them on the back of my king Hauler? Regards from Cameron. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks a lot as always guys:D. Cameron, I made the wheels and if you look back a little ways you will see how I did it...Nothing too fancy but somewhat time consuming. I'm kind of in a weird place right now as I have completed everything that I had planned and then some on this truck. I have a couple of small projects on the go but really don't know what I want to do next. I guess I will have to start something new soon or I might wear out the 850 driving it around!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Well Reg, one thing for sure we all know now how big the Kenworth is. The Volvo is going to be able to load that out with one bucket full. Are you making a screw drive or hydraulic for it.
Rob |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Oh come on, the Kenworth is just a tiny bit bigger.:D Judging by loading Jason's Autocar it will take about two scoops from the Volvo and it will be full! I'm thinking screwdrives but I haven't got that far just yet. I will do a build thread down the road for the KH.
Oh, Thanks for the email earlier Rob! Nice!:bounce::bounce: |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, I have really enjoyed watching this truck come to life - and then to second life when the flatbed trailer was added! All the details, the craftsmanship, and the immenseness! Just an outstanding model.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Well Now, that does put things into perspective as to just how big your KW is!
How tall is the KW at it's highest point? Perhaps a side dump or belly dump for this beast could be next. ;) https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...AHa80EchcvqnZw |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, you've done it again. Your trailer turned out awesome, and your twist throttle sound maker thing a ma bobber is probably the most convincing 2 stroke diesel simulator I've heard yet. That's really cool. Who would have thought? Thanks for the explanation on the turntable and trailer's lack of a 5th wheel pin. It makes perfect sense to me now.
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks a lot Nate. Yes the sound thingy worked out pretty good! I wish I could get some shifts and air brake noise thrown in there but it sounds fairly authentic as far as the engine sound is concerned so I won't complain.
What have you been up to? Seems like you were missing for a while. |

(there is something to said about building smaller scale models in that it is sometimes if not most times much harder to build tiny little parts compared to larger scale parts....but you just can't beat larger scale models...again great job on the truck !!! I will most likely be picking your brain for help..LOL..) |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

I agree about the smaller models. My biggest challenge so far has been trying to deal with using thinner and weaker metals. I really don't like using bolts to hold together things that would be welded on a 1:1 but welding really thin metal doesn't come easy for me. The other thing is strength...I'm used to building things heavy and not worrying just like you do but the smaller stuff you have to be careful! My hats off to the guys that can find a way to jam all the goodies into a 1/14 model though! Anything you need, just let me know. If I can help I will be glad to! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Holy cow that thing is massive! I really wanted to build my yarder in 1/10 but the size would be outrageous with styrene. Maybe someday I'll learn to weld as good as you:D

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
very nice. Your skills with metal are unreal love it
