Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Awesome stuff Reg! Did you build the track loader too, I'm sure you did. Is there a build thread on that, did I miss something?
Love your outside photos and videos in the sun. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I built the track loader back when I first started in the hobby. As soon as my Euc was finished I realized that having a dump truck with out a way to load it makes no sense....http://rctruckandconstruction.com/sh...ighlight=kitty
Yes, the weather was nice here today. It sounds like it will be really nice by the weekend. I think Mario and Wayne need to fly out... |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow what a fleet:D Can really see the size difference now. I can't wait until I get my mini buggy built so I can move onto the yarder:cool:

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Yesterday I decided to try and put a load on the big KW with the Volvo. I know loading logs with a thumb and bucket isn't really the way to do it but when you don't have another option you use what you have to get the job done. I changed the shape of the thumb slightly and it worked not bad but it still needs some more tweaking. I did however manage to bend it so i know it is squeezing fairly hard. At the end of the first video I struggle to load what they call a berry(a really big log). Patients pays off, and after a while I do get it on there!lol

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Boy, I would hate to be a passing motorist if that big boy was to shift and fall off the top of the load. Great videos, I like that your not using any of those fake logs like the other Canadian Loggers tend to use.:D:D:D

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Haha! No cardboard tubes with bark glued to them in my operation. I did manage to cut a couple of cedars that were hollow though which does help. I modified the thumb a little on the excavator since and now it will pick up a full length log the same size as the short I am loading in the video. Now the problem is the machine tips over if I'm not lifting parallel to the tracks.... Always something!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow...I had no idea how big the kenworth is compared to a king hauler....
Looks like you could haul 200 lbs on that trailer ! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Hey Reg, found some 12 v 71 audio! http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-r...#axzz32DaGiZGB Towards the end!
Cheers, Neil. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
wow those photos really puts that truck into perspective!!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Nice videos, and nice trucks.
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow reg looks great , sorry been away from rc life for awhile other stuff in the way
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I never get tired of looking at photos of your masterpiece models, sitting outside in a natural environment. Yes, okay, so the little trucks on the big trailer is not a good scale load or anything, but they still look great, and the size difference is awesome!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg. With the other two trucks in the same picture you have a better idea how big that KW is.. Love that big scale. would like to see it in person..
Wayne |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
It's a big truck for sure. I really like the realism that the larger scale provides. Driving around a truck that runs empty without the trailer @36 pounds is pretty cool. Loaded with logs the truck and trailer way in at well over 100 pounds. The suspension works very well with that kind of weight and the tires have some scale squish to them too. My Hayes has some decent detail and I think turned out pretty good from a looks standpoint but it sure doesn't look very scale while driving on anything but smooth surfaces. Tire size has a lot to do with this as well of course!
Thanks to everyone for the compliments on the truck! Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I was looking through this thread the other day and it reminded me of all the effort it took to build this truck! This is definitely the most complex thing I have ever made and quite possibly always will be. It's funny how a year can go by and our memories of certain things start to fade. Anyway, I was thinking about again today and when I stopped for lunch I decided to see if I could make a video of the build pictures. It's hard to believe that over 6 months of work can be compressed into 16 minutes worth of pictures. It's kind of sad really!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg.
That was amazing set of pictures and video.. It really show your building and fabrication skills.. You do set the bar very high when it comes to aluminum built RC's Wayne |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg,
Thanks for posting your build video. I can't say it enough, you skills are just amazing! I actually watched it twice and paused several times just to take in the detail and complexity of this project. You are the master of metal for sure. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Don't sell yourself short Reg. You may not think it'll happen but.....something tells me there will be another epic build coming from the RCP camp in the future.
It's in your nature! You have to! :D:lol::bounce: |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks very much to all of you. I actually enjoyed watching the video myself because it made me stop and think about the process of making certain parts.
Thanks again to those that helped keep me motivated though out the build! Mario, you are probably right. It may just be a while:D. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow, this is cool! That's a beast of a setup! Really puts things in perspective with both of those dumps sitting on the deck!!!:jaw:
Keep up the good work Reg!, -Alex |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks Alex! My wife and I spent some time over the weekend camping in an area where some real off-highway trucks still operate hauling logs. We passed a loaded Hayes HDX yesterday on our way home. I must say that you feel pretty small in a full size pickup with a camper when one drives by on a two lane road! With 15' bunks they own the majority of the road and you get what's left! I pulled over as far as I could and we waited for the truck to pass! There aren't many of these trucks in use anymore so the remaining drivers are the best of the best. No worries about them not knowing if they can pass or not!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
That would be very scary coming down the road at you!!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow, I mean... have the road dude, it's all yours!! What's he grossing, 160 Tons or more? Cool vid Reg.
John |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Haha, One of our friends is a driver. He has a bumper sticker on the rad guard that says "As a matter of fact I do own the road". Very fitting I think. I believe the trucks were designed to carry 100+ tons of logs but of course when conditions are good and the roads aren't too steep they load on a lot more. Most of the places they are logging now have some nasty grades with a lot of switchbacks so the loads are more moderate like in the video. Even with a smaller load there is close to 3 highway truck loads on there! Very cool trucks in person.
I like this video on YouTube....http://youtu.be/7UHChCRe6hI?list=FLr...tJ-DusnO8Onw7A These trucks are the real deal! |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thats insane, you definitely need your sea legs for that ride the way it sways back and forth.:jaw::jaw:
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
LOL, love it, yes, TOTALLY fitting Reg. :D
Agreed, INSANE. Imaging the feel of that 100+ ton 'push' going down hill, dang what a rush. Sea legs and balls of titanium!!! like basketball size! John |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
On the other side of the world, Canada and New Zealand are similar in so many ways, climate etc, but it is the Logging Industry that is the closest, Canada and NZ are the only two in the world that Log big tree's, mostly because the trees come from Canada, Pinus Radiata (Pine) is the most common but there is also Redwood and Kauri Logging which is unique and demands very big gear, check the video link below to see some current Pine operations in NZ

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Interesting video Paul. You are correct that we have a very similar forest industry. A lot of good old BC equipment has found a new home in NZ. Even some of the manufacturers have set up shop there build yarders and log loaders. There was a big auction here on the island back in 2008 and a lot of the equipment was sold into New Zealand. At least that stuff was spared the fate of the scrap yard and has been put to good use.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Yes, I spent many years working for Hitachi Machinery as a Diesel Mechanic, a lot of the crews had Hitachi and John Deere machines and I spent many days and nights working on their Madill swing yarders among others.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
in the past we have sold used 535 CAT skidders to Australia. We had to strip it right down to pieces and clean it and reassemble. If they found more than two hands of dirt at shipping, it was a major fine on us. Makes sense though, prevent introducing insects etc to a foreign continent .

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg,
I just stumbled onto the slide show video, wow! I am trying to get started on the truck chassis under my NyLint dragline. I know with all your skill and experience this will be hard to answer but what did you use for plans or design ideas as you built the logging truck? Could you say something about the drive train? I saw one picture that looked like an off the shelf gear going into the diff but is it a solid axel or a live diff? What sort of mill are you using for this sort of stuff? I purchased a 10" lathe a few weeks back and of course now I realize I ALSO need a mill! Thanks for the inspiration, now if I can keep away that overwhelming feeling I get when I think about working on my stuff. Jim |

Not only do you have some exceptional talent you sir are also a diplomat! Thanks for the very encouraging reply! I'm heading out the the shop to see if I can put some of your encouragement to good use! Jim |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Tried to do some logging yesterday. It wasn't much of a success. Truck driver parked it completely in the way and the skidder ran out of fuel... You just can't hire good help these days...

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Videos from yesterday... This truck is so big that it needs every inch of the road. If you screw up you don't make the turns much like on the real logging roads.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg, I enjoy watching all those videos. I even crack a smile on all the "N" scale commentary. That is still my favorite truck.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Some great shots with the scenery Reg, the KW is your best ever masterpiece that I don't think you'll ever top.
But imagine if it had a gravel dump behind it, how much more use you'd get out of it instead of being just a pretty trk driving around? :D :p |

I know what you are saying about the dump option. As cool as it is to have an RC logging truck like no other it is not very practical. If however, I were to build a log loader that may change....:D |
