Haha, buying that machine is the best money I have ever spent on a toy. It has saved us way more than what it cost just in excavating fees. Let alone it is sitting here ready to go when you have a job to do. It's a goofy looking machine because it's from Japan(grey market) but I am continually amazed by what it will do for it's size. You should want one too Mike!:p

Yes this trucks size can be a pain but when you see it loaded in person cruising around it is fairly impressive. It showed no signs of slowing down on the uphill grades but I am a bit worried about the gears in the diffs under that load as well as the drive shafts. So far so good and I do have spares. I just don't want to break my pride and joy!lol The bridges turned out not bad considering I just threw them together. It would have been nice to cut scale sized decking for them but I didn't want to devote that much time. I think the 1"x8" planks kinda look like concrete slabs so it's good enough. They are wide enough to pass two trucks in 1/14 and barely wide enough for the KW850.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

I had this old girl out today as well. When I built the truck I didn't know how long I should make the compensator hitch. It turns out that the length I chose wasn't enough so today I tried to fix it. I added a bit more to it but then had some binding issues as you will see in the video I am uploading. I took it all apart since and welded the added piece to the original so that there isn't a seem between the two. Should be good now but will have to wait until the paint dries. Apparently, heating aluminum to it's melting point burns paint... Who knew:confused::rolleyes:

This load is really heavy! The logs are large fir limbs with very tight grain. I would say that it is at least 100 pounds. I took the truck out into the field to pick them up and went as slow as I could coming back across the grass. It held together so I'm a happy guy! When I was done playing I hauled them right over to my wood shed!

that is huge!! thing really are bigger in Canada

RCP57 08-02-2015 09:45 PM

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

Well the difference in scale is quite great obviously but the off highway trucks are much larger than their highway cousins in real life. For instance, 8' bunks on a highway truck vs 14'-16' on the off highway trucks. Hauling 100 tons of logs isn't uncommon. They are impressive to be around if you like trucks.

I had to dig back a couple of pages to find this old girl.

I decided that it had been a while since I went over this thing and lubed some stuff up so I better get at it! Xmas is coming and it will be up to me and this thing to roll out the lights.lol

It has been run around enough now that dust is starting to stick on the greasy parts giving it that "scale" look. I haven't had it on the bench for ages. IT'S HUGE!!!!

Man I like that big truck and all the details you put in it, I'll bet it looks big on the bench when you are working on 1/14 scale lately. Good to see the new pics of a great old build!!

In my opinion, THE greatest off the shelf mod for a sound unit ever! Forget all those fancy a** computer programmed electronic systems!

If there was a RC hall of fame, that sound unit belongs there!:D:lol:

Yep that's it Brandon. It's funny, I looked on eBay before I cut mine up to see what they were worth. At that time there was one on there for $30 and it wasn't selling. I was looking last night and the most current one sold for $69US. I cut up a collectors item!:lol:

Pretty cool that you thought of using that to make the sound on the Kenworth most people would have tossed it away years ago! I myself thought you were using a sound module lol...the things creative people think of!

Well I guess it's a good thing you aren't nearby with your hammer or I would probably hurt your ears even more by discharging my shotgun.:rolleyes: It does seem much louder on camera than in person. When side by side with the Hayes the sound level is not that different but it does have a more "metallic sound" for sure and I think that's why the camera picks it up more. Oh well, there's no volume control on this one so it is what it is. It needs to be loud anyway because Detroit's are famous for being obnoxious! That's why so many old timers are deaf.

It sounds similar at least. I think it's as close as the few Detroit Diesel sound clips I've heard guys load onto the electronic units. I would rather it be electronic as it would be cool if it had the air brake noises and stuff like that but it's also kinda neat to surprise people with what is actually making the noise.lol

Yes, the camera does resonate sounds more than what they are... like the hyd pumps in my vids, it sounds deafening in vid, but the reality is it's just a light hum... the furnance when it starts drowns out the noise even.

LOL

Yeah I don't really understand why that is but it doesn't seem to matter which camera I use. I notice it when I am filming outside too so I can't blame it on being in an enclosed area. Oh well, that's why operators wear earmuffs isn't it?

What & how many cameras do you use to shoot yt film?

My GoPro is early 2012, it's starting to get glitchy to use & despite saving on Hi-Def from Window's movie maker editor, the picture still seems kinda blurry... I think it's 1080x720.

RCP57 02-13-2016 05:45 PM

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway

I normally use an older Canon HD video camera. I think it's from 07-08 or there about. It takes very nice video as long as it is bright enough outside. It's nice to be able to zoom in and out but the field of view is narrow compared to a GoPro. I also have a first gen GoPro Hero HD. It works well but doesn't have a screen so I point it and hope it's looking at something relevant. I don't like using it much because of that and it also seems to take much longer to upload videos from it to YT. It's great for a helmet cam but not the best for normal shooting I find. I would like to get a new Hero 4 with remote but I should have charged Mark more for his trailer to make it happen.lol Oh well, next time...
