It looks good in 1/10 I'm not sure if I can get everything small enough to look right in 1/16.
I might have to just deal with seeing one cylinder rotating....
But thank you for showing the exploded view it helps a lot...

Yup, the lead shaft is not exposed... so far this has been the smallest gearmotor i could find which works great in 10th scale... not sure if there is another one smaller than this.

Re: 1/10 Caterpillar D8T Build (3D Printed)

I found some 10mm motors with planetary gearboxes that I will be using to extend the stabilizers on my Manitou 2150, I think they are 300rpm. (There are listings similar to the gearboxes I got on Ebay now, just look for 10mm gearbox.) Using an M3 threaded rod as the screw they would move at about 2.5mm/second. The stabilizers have about a 70-80mm travel so I figure it'll take about 20-30 seconds to extend/retract the stabilizers. It works in the 3D model anyway - real-life might be another story.

I originally planned on driving the motor with a 10A ESC, but that would use 8 channels just for the stabilizers. I'm currently looking into auto-leveling using an Arduino and a gyro chip. I had planned on the Arduino running the lights anyway so I might as well make it earn it's keep. But that's a whole 'nuther rabbit hole.

Thanks, took me a while to figure out the shape of the curved sides and i settled with a section of a sphere chopped off a certain distance from the center. This thing is huge and impossible to fit in my 1st gen ender 3 so i had to print in sections... 1 of the 3 sections took 20 hrs to print... 3d printing is truly a hit or miss thing lol...

Build update for today... almost done with the blade, just waiting for blade swing cylinder to finish printing so i can fix the blade and it doesnt swing from side to side...

Here is my CAD model/rendering... and the printed/assembled parts...

Impressive work. I'm looking forward to seeing future updates

Did you add any weight to the blade?

Im thinking of using a 1 1/2" x 1/8" thk flat bar as blade tips, cut in sections just like the real ones, that would be the weight on the blade...

Anyway, another update with the installation of the headlight mount and the blade swing cylinder, (unpowered)..

I can't even begin to wrap my head around the work you must have put into this to achieve that much detail.... :jaw:

I couldn't do it....

Thanks, i do like to challenge myself a little bit and it gives me so much satisfaction when i get to figure out a shape in autocad 3d considering that i have to manipulate the WCS to be able to model something working only with basic shapes like cylinder, box, torus, sphere, cone, etc.

That's really an amazing looking build!

It will be interesting when you're done to estimate how many hours you think you've probably got into the cad modelling, vs the parts prep and building

Can't wait to see this ready to bulldoze stuff.

Thanks, this would probably end up like a demo build, not sure of the power train being able to push dirt but when i tested it, it can pretty much climb a 30 degree incline but lets see... i can say 3d modeling really takes more time than printing and assembling but im excited to see how it would look when finished and painted.... ill keep you guys posted...cheers.

Update on the build... done with the cab deck, fuel tank, hydraulic oil tank, etc... time to design and build the cab...

Quite amazing what can be accomplished with 3D printing in modern times, looks fantastic! Have you kept a separate tally of hrs in design & print?

thanks, just a rough estimate would be around 220 hrs for design and maybe half of that for the prints... i have used 4 spools more or less since i started this build.
