picked up some stock for the boom today and chopped up a cab

the main part of the boom is 3 x 1 1/2 tube 36inches long and is going to have 3 stages to it. i'm going to have to build some bad azz outriggers

Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane

If you have the counter weight correct your out riggers only need to support the total weight of the crane. It shouldn't tip. I saw a guy at a show last year who was retired from Grove and he built a truck crane like yours only a older model that has a lattice boom he built from Stitka Spruce. When he booms it up all the way and adds his jib,he has 21' of boom. Then he demonstrated the erection of a scale model cell phone tower.

Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane

that would be kool to see. thanks for the info, i was going to add counter weights but really wasn't sure how much i was going to need. so that really helps

Very nice Russ, you have a very good imagination. If i could make a suggestion, consider using the Tamiya Super-Single tires.

Nice build, I'll be watching. What hydraulic cylinders are you going use?

Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane

Russ she is coming along nicely.. I am thinking we need to find you bigger tires for it and the boom trailer is a must the only time they run the boom forward is when on job sight but going down the road they have to use the toter for weight limit laws and i understand it is easier on the running gear of the crain to get the weight off its back..
