Re: Euclid R18
RCP,
Why are you using a lead acid battery? 10 NiMH C cells are much lighter and give you as much capacity. I actually use lithium packs in some of my trucks the they are even lighter and save space. Trucker Al |
Re: Euclid R18
Great looking dumper and the green is perfect looking..

Re: Euclid R18
So the sun is out, the truck is running(but not finished), and I'm thinking of shooting some video. What resolution should I film it with and what is the easiest way to post it?
|
Re: Euclid R18
looks awsome i think i would run two 7.2 bateries together to make 14.4 like we did in my dozer save on the weight and then you could make a lil detriot motor to cover the batteries
|
Re: Euclid R18
oh and it also gives it more detail and realism
|
Re: Euclid R18
Wow have to say the paint really changes the looks from the plain old steel look. I love the stance of it but also agree that an engine under that hood would put it off the charts. Great work.

still a great lookin truck

Re: Euclid R18
I went to the hobby store(UGHH) and bought another battery a couple days back, a 5 cell 4.2ah 6v. I haven't put it in the truck yet but if it works out OK I will buy another one of the same to get the run time up to where it is with the lead acid battery. Two of these are still way lighter than the lead acid battery and they will also reduce the charge time a whole bunch. How many amp hours do the batteries that you guys use have?
|
Re: Euclid R18
i have two venom 5000 mih bateries i get 45 mins to an hour now that i have been running it
|
Re: Euclid R18
Awesome! Even your boat is made from aluminum! And you say you don't have the same level of metal fab skills. The dump truck turned out great! Incredible work.
|
Re: Euclid R18
nicely done! Looks terriffic!
|
Re: Euclid R18
Thanks guys! There is a lot of detail work left to do but I have a harder time motivating myself with the small stuff.

Re: Euclid R18
Another great build Reg.
We Vancouver Island folks will have to plan a weekend event before the Albernie show for a meet and greet. My excavator can load your truck without and problems. What scale did you build it ? We tend to build in 1/14 scale... Looking forward to putting your truck to work.. greg |
Re: Euclid R18
The truck is about 1/10 scale. Let me know when you guys are planning something and I'll see what I can do. It's not that much fun having a truck like this without something to load it.

Re: Euclid R18
Here's a short vid of the truck hauling three shovels full of wet sand. My battery died pretty much right away so I didn't get a chance to film another better video. I haven't done anything new to the truck lately but hopefully soon. I think I need to replace the 540 motor with a more powerfull one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBBcM...yer_detailpage

Re: Euclid R18
Looking good!
It's nice to see a scratch built model under power and doing what it was built for. Now the truck needs a friend like an old steam shovel with an electric conversion like the ones they used on the island here for road building way back when.;) |
Re: Euclid R18
I hope to build a Cat 955K(1967) track loader next because that's what we use to load the real truck at home here. It's only 6 years newer than the truck(1961) so it will be close in era. I haven't been around any shovels so I wouldn't know where to start building one.HAHA I wish I was rich and retired(but not any older) so that I could build more of these things... I like logging equipment too...

I couldn't have summed it up any better myself:D The 955K sounds like a good match for the truck. I'm looking forward to seeing that build in the future! |

That looks very similar to one these two sitting in Atlin BC slowly sinking into the ground.

Re: Euclid R18
OOOOOh! I smell road trip.
I might have to take the camera and get a bunch of photo's of those machines. Live Steam, R/C, and model loaders. That would be a unique build.:D |
Re: Euclid R18
For some steam shovel footage see chapter 3 http://video.pbs.org/video/1747929120
reminds me of my favorite book "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel" They were definately animated in operation! Later, Neil#2 aka doodlebug. |
Re: Euclid R18
I finally did a little more work to the truck this week. Got to play outside for a minute between rain squalls...http://youtu.be/nupRfwlEVQA?hd=1

Re: Euclid R18
The truck looks great and seams to get around real good but your gonna be there a while trying to move that big pile of dirt with that little truck.:D

Re: Euclid R18
HAHA! Yeah I think I might need more batteries.

Re: Euclid R18
Great video of the Steam shovel.
Hope you can make the truck show in Port, it's early in September I think the 4th. Jordy |
Re: Euclid R18
I should be able to make the port show. Hopefully I will have this thing done by then...

Re: Euclid R18
**** Construction????? Uh ya OK. Haha!
Seriously though those are really cool pictures. I'm guessing that those trucks are from the early fifties, before GM bought them out? Really cool, thanks very much! Reg |
Re: Euclid R18
I guess I may have a strange sense of humour but my mind went somewhere else when I read "**** Construction"... Sorry:o
Feel free to flood away! I haven't read the whole story but I will. Since we have a 1961 Euc, I find it interesting to learn more about their history as well as others surrounding them. Thanks for the post. What model do you think the truck in the last pic would be? Reg |
Re: Euclid R18
now I know who put in all those valleys in that area  I did some work up there a couple years back . most all the dirt we worked in looked like overburden from some point in time .

Re: Euclid R18
Thank's, Steve!

Re: Euclid R18
Easy spring mounted ride my ***! Maybe they ride better than the ridged model but I know they don't ride easy. Haha! Cool post, thanks!

So I had a little incident the last time out with the Euc and Volvo. I swapped out the 540 motor for a slower more powerful 550 in the Euc which I was very happy with. The speed was more realistic and the increased torque was great. The problem is that I have the mentality that if it "can do it" then it must be OK. Because the truck has more power and my Volvo is working good I started loading heavier and heavier loads so something had to give. The original diff that I built was a solid axle with aluminum Diawa spin casting reel gears so it bit the dust.
So.... I figured this was a good excuse to use my mill for the first time... As it turns out though most of the parts have been made on the lathe so far:rolleyes:.I do have a lot of parts to make yet though so I'm sure I will use it on the pinion carrier and such.. Thanks for looking! |
Re: Euclid R18
Hmm , I think I can see where you're goin with this ;) looks great so far
|
Re: Euclid R18
lookin great wish my work looked that good lol can't wait to see it haulin again
|
Re: Euclid R18
Nice looking axle-do you have a plan for gears that will fit in there?
