Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
A quick update, got the transfer case and front drive line mounted. Used a modified Axial transmission. Still need to fab up a left side mount bracket for it.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Cool looking build. Im loving the walking beam set up. that will be a beast with all that articulation. I have been tinkering with a set up like that for my next truck.
I did notice the plastic driveshafts. Just a word of caution. My mack 6 wheeler twisted one of them up on the 1st day I installed it. I had to put metal ones in if I wanted to haul loads with it. same with my cab over freight truck. if i pulled my flat bed it would twist it as well. I keep them for mock ups and then purchase metal shafts for use and abuse. keep the pics coming |

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Rear suspension update, It's done :bounce: !! Ok so it needs adjusted, tested, painted etc. but at least the fabrcation is done and it appears to work as planned.:D

Then I'll power it up and make sure it runs the way I want it too and then work on the bed mechanism. Thanks for looking!:) |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Nice brass work. Consistent clean bends - nice!
|
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Q - who's drive shafts you have up front?
|
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
It's out of an axial crawler and pretty much stretched to its limit, I couldn't get it to come apart flexing the suspension but it only has about 1/2 to 3/4 inch penetration. I used it primarily to set the transfer case location.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Got the driveshafts done, I need to shorten the inter-axle shaft up a hair. Should be able to power it up this weekend.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
wow loving the walking beam set up. and the brass tube for the driveshafts!
I had tried the RC4WD plastic driveshafts that look just like the Steel versions. They would twist the star "tube" to the point that the U joints would then slip out. Granted this was with a truck pulling a full load of sand and going over some real harsh ground. On the other hand even my on road Cab over mack twisted a shaft pulling my flat bed when I was backing down a steep hill and then tried to move forward. IMO the RC4WD shafts are only good for trucks that dont get dirty or pull any sort of weight around. |

I was thinking about making a walking beam that rubber mounts the axles to the beams and thus keeps the inter axel drive-shaft angle straight at all times. only the front shaft would move in and out of the tube to take up the length difference when traveling over bumps. I know your example is more 1:1 but I always have issues with lots of articulation and the little driveshaft. I went back to the tamiya cups and dog bones between both drive axels because they were performing better than the scale driveshafts did. |

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
It's coming along nicely. Even though that articulation is too much for that drive shafts I doubt you will ever see that much need for it.
Watch you triangulation when doing your lift mechanism. |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Looks good so far . Great job on the walking beam , I would only suggest getting metal rod ends , I've broken the plastic 1's I 1st used on my IH9370 with the walking beam (hendrixson )

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Awesome job so far. I'm not up on all the various available parts so I apologize in advance for asking, but what transfer case are you using and where did you get it?

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Thanks for the info! Oh and I forgot to mention I really like your walking beam setup. I may have to borrow your method(s) for a future build
|
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
looking good. Maybe add some axle stops so you can control the articulation? I cut mine of the tamiya axles so I can get more but it looks like you will have plenty!
looks like your bed lift will work just fine. If I can offer a suggestion. My Piviot point on my green MACK 6 Wheeler is about even with the back of the rear tire. I had it previously further back about 10-15mm but the truck was trying to do a wheelie when dumping or with the box all the way up. you may want to check to see if your truck will stay solid on the ground with the bed fully raised. It looks like you will be fine with a heavy truck but its something to think about Hope to see this at the spring meet! |

I have your build thread saved in my favorites trying to study how it hooks up. I understand how it works but trying to figure the right place to put it without drilling a bunch of holes and moving it around so it doesn't get into the suspension etc. etc. is pushing me closer to building a set of dummy rails to test all the possibilities:confused::confused::rolleyes:. I will have it there but not sure if I'll have totally done. |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
I can measure where I drilled the holes when I get home next week. Send me a PM on Thursday if you want the info from my truck. I think I used one of the three stock trunnions holes on the frame rail for the pivot point of the lift then just drilled one hole in the bed floor for the other end of the lift. The screw drive pushes and the lift unfolds and moves pretty quick as you have seen. I got lucky that the lift tucked I between the axles and did not interfere with suspension travel. I think you will have plenty of room to work with.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
I was surprised how well it lifts a full box of sand even when the whole lift system is connected at the rear 1/3 part of the box.
I get a little over 45 deg if I recall correctly. But trial and error was how I had to set it up. Just let me know if you want any measurements. Trent |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Got the bed lift motor mounted. I'll try to wire it up tomorrow. Need to get some limit switches.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
I got the dump body lift wired up and ran a quick test. Due to the way I wired the limit switches I couldn't tell whitch end was which and of course a 50/50 chance and I got it wrong, the motor tried to turn this thing inside out:jaw::mad:
But here is a quick video of it the way it's supposed to work :p:rolleyes::D http://youtu.be/tj4BE-vGd6U |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Says the video is private?

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Try it now and let me know. I don't do a lot of videos and I didn't set it correctly:o

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Vid opened fine.
Wow. I'm anxious to see this with a load on it. The multi link plays with my head on the triangulation of the lift forces so it intrigues me. |
Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
After the first time I seen this one online and then on LMacks truck I googled it and found that there are 1:1's just like it that use a hydraulic ram in place of the screw drive. I'm anxious as well, the box is pretty large compared to most I've seen so it will be interesting to see what happens. I'm hoping to have it far enough along so we can test it the weekend of the Franklin toy show.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Oh we will test it whether your ready or not :bounce:

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Here's a few update pictures while getting ready for the Midwest Spring Meet next weekend May 23-24. The dump body is still drying and a new one will be made and hopefully be done by Indy along with the correct bumper.

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Here's a couple pictures and a video. The second picture shows the battle scars it received at the Midwest Spring Meet In Monticello Ill. this past weekend. It worked really well, far beyond my expectations. The battle scars are due to it being slightly top heavy when loaded and a crazy driver! We had a great time at the meet.
I'm hoping I'll have the new dump body done by Indy as the body on it was originally for a pup trailer hence no cab protector. https://youtu.be/Y4ahTGC6YkM http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7lvl44y3.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3xqfqcbf.jpg http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2w0n9p6h.jpg Thanks for looking, Kent |

Re: 6X6 Quarry Dump Truck
Battle scars were from Izzy and his new excavator and wheeled loader. Amazing how we all loose stick control without lots of practice. Still better than using a shovel :eek:
