Hi Ap, that's good to know! Some of their stuff is pretty nice.

Here meanwhile ... got a bit better at getting screws into small holes, but now a minor set back because of a paint issue. When I took the supports off the frame, the paint stuck to them ... so now have to go and find another overpriced rattle can of cheap paint. (only variety to be found here)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxnsectg7.jpg

Maybe more tomorrow

Cheers, Stephan

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

OK, was lucky and the local hardware store had one in stock. Masked the area with some paper, couple of shots to paint and we're back in business.

Decided not to move the support because the next opening over is where the frame flares out. I think I would be buying more trouble further in the build.

Cheers, hopefully next update more progress.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Some progress. Got both front axles and the steering linkage installed :)

The steering linkage from 1st to 2nd front axle went on first. This serves to make the radius of the turn slightly different for each axle. The actual rod connecting the two is just some threaded rod stuck in a messing tube with the two clamps screwed on. Had assembled it for painting purposes.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psu12ljzxm.jpg

Easier to first put the linkage on the steering levers first. That clamp is tight and takes some force to slip on. Highest point on the front axle, lowest on the second.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psk26qpdit.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscystgblu.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswhsfdlhm.jpg

Now the front axle. A very hefty piece (put it on the kitchen scales and came in at 278 grams) and beautifully finished.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdxrofbot.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslmuzydvx.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pseg4bkreh.jpg

Here with the components of the track rod. The little M2x5 screw I put in the opening on top to prevent dirt getting in. (not in the manual, but someone on one of the German forums mentioned it was a good preventive thing to do)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psimktztn1.jpg

Track rod goes on top on the first axle

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psi7t9aw39.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspxx41lfv.jpg

Added some bling to the axle. There are little holes in there, and you ScaleART has miniature hex heads that can be put in there (not part of the kit). You will have to drill the hole out to 1 mm and then you can tap them in with one of those hard plastic hammers. Bit tedious but looks good when finished.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslmcnkx2f.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psstdmamlv.jpg

Then slide axle on the suspension and bolt up. You need a 5.5 key for those nuts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslurnqqka.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuuojxl9u.jpg

Then we need a lever to connect the steering to the axle.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7a45jnyv.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgo9bgxfu.jpg

That's the first one done. Second one below.

Rakthi 05-26-2015 05:49 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

The second axle is the same. Here I filed the little screw on top down to about 3mm. Because this is the throughput axle I was a bit concerned that at 5mm the end of the screw might interfere with the workings. On this one the track rod goes on the bottom.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfjizsyzm.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psr9ybhjai.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psf32oofuy.jpg

And here installed. For some reason this one put up a struggle and was a real pain to get on the suspension. I think one of the long screws was at a slight angle.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrxahcz7o.jpg

Connect the 2nd steering lever. Made sure both rods front and back were the same length. Here one of those little bolts fell out. Was thinner than the others. Put it back in with some Loctite. (One package of them had 21 and the other 22 so if one goes missing there are some spares)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrnjxfuds.jpg

Here an overview. Added some lines. Looks like the front track rod needs some adjusting.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5lekvnlb.jpg

Best regards etc.

Stephan

what a work of art, scale-art standard seems so much better than everything else in this hobby.I got a scania 143 streamline, made from brass, from when scale-art was Brand modellbau, even back then the quality was top notch, can't wait to see your build finished, keep up the good work.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Yes, Prop, Roundabout, the parts of this kit are really something else. Pictures just don't do it for the detail and care with which they were made. They also keep updating and improving the parts, even on this kit. It is expensive stuff, but it sure is top of the line as far as building kits is concerned. Having a brass one must be interesting! There still is a section called "Brand Modelbau" in their shop. Mostly small detail stuff for US trucks.

Well was set to post the rear axles stuff, but we are having a tropical downpour here and internet is slow as a poke. Will see if I can get the pics uploaded.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Rear axles .. here a picture of all the parts. (forgot the leaf spring bits)

The bits in the "ScaleART" plastic were in the boxes with the axles. The other parts were in the "rear suspension" package.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy29x9vui.jpg

Note: this whole assembly was done with the frame upside down - just to make it more interesting.

First we assemble both triangular parts. Turns out the everything (marked with arrow) is threaded. So a bit of thought has to go in the assembling.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pse2uc9lfx.jpg

After giving it a couple of trail fittings in the chassis, found out it was not going to be that easy. The triangles have to be installed so they can still easily move up and down. It takes some fiddling to get it just so. A bit of grease where the bushing is going is a great help. Before the bushing, screw and nut would move together. After applying the grease, at least the bushing, screw and nut didn't budge when moving the triangle.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8sacacny.jpg

Here they are installed. (Loctite applied to about everything)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0k6ejwjw.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspgrvjqiu.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4qpyktu3.jpg

Next the leaf spring packages. I replaced the silver phillips screws with hex head ones I had lying around from the Capo. (easier to install with a ball head driver than a philips screwdriver) Apply grease to the inside of the hole where the bushing goes and attach to the lower of the 2 holes (or higher when working upside down). Loctite applied to the inside of the threaded bushing.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psklu0hukq.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswwtrzi3g.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psekzqzcnf.jpg

Next prepping the actual rear axles for installation.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4lqlpmsd.jpg

First connect the bit that will attach the axle to the triangle. This part has a cut out in the centre that fits over the stainless steel part and the bottom is also slightly rounded so it sits perfectly on the axle casing. On top, one of the holes is threaded, the other is not. So 2 little nuts I thought I would need are extras.

It is also a good idea to first test the fit of this little piece on the triangle (how do I know?) ... One of them needed a bit of widening before it fit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvuunz0wz.jpg

axle ready to install

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswudwvf2i.jpg

Rear axle attached to the triangle

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxowglbms.jpg

Both installed and balancing on the leaf springs. (connecting the axles to the triangles is another one of those moments that invites the use of colourful language :) )

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqmns0kz0.jpg

Next we need the 4 track rods. Manual states to set them at 50mm and if needed do adjustments later once wheels and fenders are installed.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0euve8fn.jpg

Whole frame from above

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psm2bjc81i.jpg

and upside down

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6x2hjfnz.jpg

And as point of interest ... these are the bits left over from the packages supplied. Never even opened those that came with the axles.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psp2jvzxhe.jpg

Next supposed to do the servos for the diff lock and the bowden cables, but might put that of for a bit. Probably will assemble the wheels and fenders next. Just to get the thing on wheels.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Started assembling the wheels. The front ones just bolt on, the rear ones need to be bolted together.

The front gets a wide tire. The rear 2 thinner ones each side.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psimf6joxq.jpg

Didn't get around to putting them on the axles. So only the rear ones.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psot0r8exp.jpg

The little rubber bit is to hold the black cap on.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszbewjtse.jpg

Here too we add the little decorative bolts. No need to drill the holes out, most of the little bolts just slide in. So some Loctite applied to the holes. 3 of them "escaped" not to be found when doing the 4 caps. Good thing they provide some extras.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslrafwevk.jpg

Only 3 of the 40 installed needed a tap with the hammer

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspmchm1fk.jpg

First install the rubber ring on the centre piece. Would be a pain afterwards.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psn4ge1sop.jpg

Then simply slide the 3 parts together and fasten them

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psp9qs3g8o.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg3hf0mh6.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslufsop47.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmrvtyqjw.jpg

Instead of bolting them to the axles, decided to do the diff lock servos. This turned out a real pain.

First prepping the servo horn and add the bowden cable holder. (Holder needs to be installed so it can still move a bit)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5xtohzva.jpg

Servos and other bits ready to be installed. (each servo is for 2 axles)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdpsvlnfj.jpg

These were a pain should have installed them earlier.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4i9n4jyd.jpg

Luckily access from underside. however none of my wrenches fitted through. Ended up holding the nut in place with a pair off strong tweezers and screwing a long M3 bolt where the grub screw goes. Then tightened up by using the M3 bolt.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0vwwlogu.jpg

Front axles servo installed - horn in the diff closed position.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxk3kcqnz.jpg

The one for the rear axles should have been installed before the axles. Almost no access to the screws. The 2 bowden holders were a struggle too. This one too in the diff locked position. Unlocked will be 90° turn towards the leaf springs.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps26hayaq0.jpg

Almost had to remove the axle to get to the screw that holds the servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmdpyyvth.jpg

Have to remember to install the support bracket for plate that will hold the electronics before I get in a tight mess there too.

Worn out ... Cheers!

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshk1wjrv4.jpg

Since I reminded myself, I installed the supports for the electronic platform

This need be done now. Once the drive train is in, no more access to that area.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshysdimdw.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps28vbyepl.jpg

A bit tight to install because of the steering rod. Another area that will need some touch up later on.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps60azbb9v.jpg

Other side was easy

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfevzbwqv.jpg

Next up the cover of the diff lock servo of the front axles.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psil8vepz0.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqf9ysebl.jpg

A nice detail, there is a slot just slightly bigger than the plug of a servo so you can stick the wire through.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psi577yjmh.jpg

Next front wheels

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl1j4mniq.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2hfpuzew.jpg

The protection ring just sticks on. This one clamped in place by itself, but the 3 other ones will need a bit of hot glue or some other sticky stuff if I don't want to loose them first time around.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqwkc83qi.jpg

Rear wheels. The washer and nut are the only thing I used from the package of fasteners that came with the rear axles

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps39x1hhok.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssfdebqib.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskaxy629q.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvcyuqffy.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxhnfbspk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl9fdzjcs.jpg

Next up is supposed to be the motor, gearbox, transfer box and prop shafts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pse1twtbnm.jpg

But, waiting for exhaust pipe that needs to go on before all the above goes in.
Want to wait with the bowden cables to, to see how they work with the motor etc.

Guess I'll just read through the book and see what I can do in the mean while.

I'll post some pics of it tomorrow. Once it's in the truck it is barely visible. Not as impressive as the one on your Jeep though. Ready assembled and greased too, just like the axles.

Think I take a break for a couple of days, back hurting from hovering over the model trying to get a handle on those nuts and bolts. And actually should finish varnishing the front door ... for some reason I haven't have found the time for that

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Prop, here the promised pictures. It's a 3 gear box and a transfer case. In normal operation, the power of the motor will go only to the rear wheels, when you lock the transfer case you are in 8x8.

Nicely detailed and beautifully fitted. Once installed you can only see it when you turn the truck on it's back.

The electrical motor is a brushed one. It's a Faulhaber 2657, 46Watt one. Screws into the gearbox and immobilised with a grub screw.

The transfer case threw me a bit, it gets placed in the middle, so the input and output size go towards the front. The position of the locking bit was confusing until I realised you are supposed to run the cable through the provided hole (you can see it on the left in the 2nd picture) and then with a 180° turn towards the front of the frame. (I guess this is also why this is the only one where the bowden cable has a teflon insert.

2nd one is between 2 front axles

3rd and 4th one is either between the rear axles or from rear axle to transfer. (can only see once transfer case is installed)

Last one is from transfer case to the front axles.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Got around to assemble the rear part of the roll on roll off mechanism.

Here all the bits and pieces in the approximate place of assembly.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdshd24ty.jpg

First the main frame assembled

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1xlnqpiu.jpg

Then the sliding and fixed hook that hold the container in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psixze1fcf.jpg

Ran into a problem with the right one. The frame is milled to create a channel in which the mechanism can slide back and forth. I guess the bit used in the milling was a bit worn or damaged and the machined surface was rough. Tried to flatten it with a small flat file. It worked up to a point.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psedjxfrah.jpg

Then I realised that it was the screwheads that were getting caught in the rough area. So too the file to them and problem solved. At one point I used the dremel and accidentally filed a bit of the actual piece too. No biggie as it is not visible.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8rw4xpd3.jpg

Have to pay attention here too. The bar attached to the sliding hook with those 2 screws connects to the other parts of the mechanism with a countersunk screw. So have to make sure it is installed the right side up. I succeeded in having both sides wrong.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psytbav4vk.jpg

Next the rods of the mechanism. They are 64 mm long as per the manual. They are attached to the above rod through a bushing that goes into a sleeve through the frame.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1lyjktyi.jpg

Here is one rod inserted. The second one is at this moment in the oven for 5 - 10 minutes at 180°C. One of the 4 balljoints of this package had a 3M thread. Didn't fit on the 2M thread rod. Easiest solution, some 2K End Fest glue and better than ever.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscioyq5x9.jpg

While the pushrod was cooling off, installed the axle and the wheels on which the containers will ride. Axle immobilised with cir clips ... smallest I've ever seen. Absolute nightmare to get on because I didn't have the right tool and had to use 2 needle nose pliers to open them up.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjrw0fa9v.jpg

I was too fast installing the rollers ... they had to come off so I could attach the cover plate and the guide for the hydraulic line.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvqjabqci.jpg

Finished view from top

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psplv7fjnh.jpg

and bottom

Part 1 of the next step: assembling the arm and part of the hydraulics.

Only a few pieces for now

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pseybqmq18.jpg

First we prep the hydraulic cylinder

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskikzny91.jpg

Then the hook

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshvly9coo.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswutgl78g.jpg

Then the above part gets bolted on the moving arm. The screws are recessed to allow for the hydraulic cylinder and not that easy to get into place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjibcqnyj.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqkpmphkm.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqdqxcvon.jpg

Next we have to insert/mount the hydraulic cylinder in the stationary part of the mechanism. This, because you have to slide the cylinder in a an angle because the nipples will otherwise not pass through.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgvekxknx.jpg

We also pass the hydraulic line of the top nipple through the provided guides

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstmcvhrld.jpg

Secure the back end

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps21kz8xag.jpg

Pull out the piston

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psr3jioqck.jpg

Slide the moving part of the arm into the stationary one (which goes smoothly) with due diligence and secure the other side of the hydraulic cylinder. (Before all this check the fit of the pins!)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshougcjn0.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3mi9n3ex.jpg

Some nice detailing

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg7qhnsce.jpg

I also installed the provided lock on the hook ... Will remove it later. Nobody uses it because half the time it doesn't open because the counterweight is too light.

Part 2 - connecting the 2 parts of the hook mechanism.

The parts

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps36k3tggb.jpg

Per the manual, apply some grease where the bushing will fit

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psraaxmulf.jpg

Space and bushing in place and then bolt to the already finished frame. A very precise fit by te way.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxafxvnca.jpg

Both connected and shown with the parts needed to work the sliding hook and connect it to the truck chassis

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmvoeidja.jpg

First the pull/push rod

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshey6otcd.jpg

Then grease applied where the bushing will go.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrnplzjqa.jpg

The part that will attach it to the frame installed. The holes indicated is where the bolts will go that hold it in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psknnrsodv.jpg

When used as a kipper, this whole assembly will move up and the hooks will slide out to secure the container.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssgtxagij.jpg

You can see I put the hydraulic lines above the cross brace. Will have to move them below, they might get clamped when using in roll off roll on mode. (getting the hydraulic lines through the guides was made easier by applying some grease to the guides)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psw9cvn9re.jpg

Both sides done

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdg0zxkml.jpg

Quick look for fit on the rolling chassis

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnmawy3ky.jpg

And the why of those 2 little bits installed in the beginning. And no, I did not forget to put a nut on the naked bolts :)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psawjqfxmp.jpg

That's it for the moment.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Found some time to add some small parts to the frame, namely the bits that hold / lock the driver's cabin in place.

Here the parts - all in stainless:
The 2 big hooks at the bottom are for the front.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pss2iw0pz0.jpg

First one to go in. This part

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssvclun0c.jpg

Goes here on the right side.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvpmdfklm.jpg

Loctite applied to the nut. This part needs to stay moveable.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyi6clo0t.jpg

The second part

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psskhuqric.jpg

Goest on here on the left side

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvojvipz5.jpg

Here too loctite on the nut so the handle stays moveable.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psninxqt7g.jpg

Next up the bar that connects these 2 parts. (spacer nuts already in place)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslqjmnpab.jpg

Loctite here too.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvszx8drx.jpg

Finally the spring to keep it in locking position.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0xwa0nff.jpg

Now the front.

Hook goes here

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswplu2w9k.jpg

Here too loctite on the nut/bolt that holds it attached to the frame. Tightened so the handle can still move forwards and back.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnl7sshib.jpg

The spring is kept in place by the thread on the bolts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqkfttqyj.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstvfc78dz.jpg

That's it for now. Might be another couple of days before the next update.

Cheers - Stephan

Hi Christian, nice to meet you here :)! Glad you like the build report. And your English if better than my "Google German" as you can see below!
Of course I know you like detailed build threads! It’s yours on Modelltruck.net that got me into this! :)

For the moment we have a pauze because I’m waiting for a package from ScaleART (shipped May 27th) with the updated parts of the cab, the raised exhaust and some nipples for the hydraulics.

I could start on the container, but I keep that for when the truck is almost finished (meaning I'm struggling with the wiring  ) as something to keep me from getting to frustrated. :D

Cheers! Stephan

Gruss! Stephan

Hi Stephan,

as I can see, you´re using the new 2-wire-bus system for the light-functions. I think, there won't be any problems with it. You'll manage it easily. - So go on with the container! - Have fun! ;)

Hi Christian, yes, I do have the Commander bus system, but you haven't seen the mess I made of the electrics in the 490LC :roll eyes: . I was thinking of sorting that out while I wait for the parts to make their way halfway around the world.

A small update. Prepped the front lights for fit of the LEDs. Not a big job but at least it is out of the way.

Checked the tracking I got and the package from ScaleART has cleared customs in Kuala Lumpur. So now waiting for it to make it here. With some luck might get here beginning next week so we can get on with this.

Here the housing with the LED board. You can see that some of the openings are not completely open.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqrhvg0kj.jpg

Trial fitting showed that the circled opening was too narrow also.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

The raised exhaust etc. arrived 2 days ago. Today found time to install it.

Ordered the raised exhaust because there is no room for the Euro 6 one on this model. By putting up the raised exhaust at least I have an indication of one. Bit weird having a model without exhaust.

So here the bits. Will only install the support for now. The rest would just be in the way during assembling the rest of the truck. Will also have to come up with a way to pretend the exhaust goes under the cab. The curved bit supplied will not do for the purpose.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspvl1fs1m.jpg

Bolted the little piece to the main upright before painting. Such a little piece would be too much of a hassle.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrowjtumf.jpg

Main upright first. Goes here. Will have to replace 3 bolts with longer ones.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssoqykaev.jpg

Bit fiddly but got it in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psu5kotmgi.jpg

Other side goes in similar spot.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps05pjbipr.jpg

Before install bolted the crossbar to it. Would have no access afterwards.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskn1rcwey.jpg

And here I ran into a fitting problem! ... The frame from the hook mechanism is interfering.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskmt1xkqt.jpg

After some diligent and careful filing/fitting and a bit of paint.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmstztfab.jpg

Got it to fit. (also filed the bottom nut down at an angle)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstwhzqjey.jpg

Installed. Will replace the screw holding the crossbar to the main upright with a M2 model bolt.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps32bt82yj.jpg

Had hoped for some more progress, but between the filing and waiting for paint to dry ...

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Drivetrain - Part 1

Started with the transfer case.
The support gets M2 nuts as spacers to the frame.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslagtibye.jpg

And it attaches here

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmgisbkwb.jpg

The transfer case comes with 3 M8 screws in place that need be replaced with M10 ones.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshwnbcc0m.jpg

After initialling the spacer nuts on the support, I tried to fit it, but ran into difficulties ... Remember I had moved one of the tank supports one hole to the right. It now interferes with the support.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbs6wo8xb.jpg

After replacing the M8 screws on the support with one with a smaller head, and grinding a bit off the one holding the tank support, it fitted. Easy solution.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjpqgbu8i.jpg

Support in place

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrgfh3gm1.jpg
Transfer case screwed on.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfljsa6np.jpg

Next the motor/gearbox

The motor has a thread and screws into the gearbox. It is held in place with a grubscrew.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuj1ddu6x.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pss1tjsk3k.jpg

In the kit they supply a support for the motor/gearbox. (the big stainless contraption) This is not needed in this truck since the support is part of the frame of the hook mechanism.

Luckily for me I remembered reading in Christian's (Newcomer_2) thread on the German forum that for this truck you need to use a special spacer (the small rectangular bit) which comes with the hydraulic parts.

Because this spaces is about 3mm thick, I replaced the recommended M2x6 countersunk screws with M2x8 ones. Have to be careful because the hole circled in red. You can block the gears if you get too long a screw in there.

Because the frame I have is not foreseen for countersunk screws, used regular ones.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnrfkete0.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslwqtmwi9.jpg

Installing this unit with that spacer "floating" around was an absolute pain in the neck ... but eventually I got it sorted. According to the instructions, the motor needs to be grounded to the frame.

Hi Alen, I'm working on it :) Putting this thing together is addictive in a weird kind of way.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now we getting to the parts that are not amongst my favourites.

Installing the cluster of servos for the transfer box lock, steering and gearbox.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0axvvd9z.jpg

Starting with the biggest one, steering servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskwz4gbpb.jpg

Installed and bits for the bowden cable attachment laid out.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psa4taqmem.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbugfd0x6.jpg

At this point I figured I'd better centre these things. Rummaged around till I found my servo tester and started out centring them all. (I also did the ones already on the truck)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psesircfcy.jpg

Next up the 2 smaller ones. Right the one for the transfer lock, left the one for the gearshifts.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfubhoc8g.jpg

First the gear shift servo goes in. Only gets fastened on one side at this point. The other side gets fixed together with the other servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psarm2hnuz.jpg

And all three installed. Had to remove the holder for the bowden cable to get the last servo in place. Easy to do and re-install.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswdobp0ag.jpg

Then the whole assembly slides into the front of the frame and gets attached with 4 M2 screws. (All the holes in the frame holding the servos are threaded)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psa6yruwo2.jpg

I had done a trial fitting before, and the power cables of the motor had to be bend out of the way. Very tight in there.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjgqystjg.jpg

Bit tricky too as the assembly has to be shoved in between these 2 rows of screws in the frame.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskkicneji.jpg

Assembly in place (but not yet screwed on)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyafqkdf3.jpg

View from below after screwing it in place

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmgfqbpta.jpg

View from the front

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdqpts9sy.jpg

Next will be trimming the servo horns, doing gear box link, steering link and the bowden cables for the diff locks etc.

Rakthi 06-21-2015 01:27 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Spend time on the transferbox lock.

The steel cable goes into a teflon one that goes into the metal guide ... Here a picture of what I'm talking about. (just for show)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psotq4knof.jpg

Cutting the servo horn and drilling the 3rd hole out to 2mm etc.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psetwdabrn.jpg

Decided to make the horn black with a Sharpie before I mounted it on the centered servo. (looks reddish in picture, but is black)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmdlcmnvm.jpg

Then I spend some enervating time figuring out how to run the metal tube. First I started out at the transferbox and worked my way forward, but that was a non working proposition because trying to get that flippin thing in the clamp near the servo is a nerve wrecking proposition ... Well anyway now had a good idea of how to fit it. So started from the servo and worked my way backwards to the transfer case. Shortened it there and gently clamped it in place with the screw. Then shove in the teflon hose, followed by the steel pull cable.

After I finished this bit, I took pictures of how I ran the cable.

Starting at the transferbox the cable goes towards the rear of the truck.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4dc0gqrd.jpg

There it goes inside the frame through one of the holes provided and swoops 180° back towards the front. I have attached to of those clamps, but I drilled the hole out to 2.5mm to make it easier to get the cable through. It does not clamp the cable, just prevents it from flopping about.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps270k53iw.jpg

Installed a 2nd clamp (also drilled out to 2.5mm) just before the gearbox, and from there the cable swoops up to go over the gearbox

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuy1ajbdi.jpg

And then down again to the clamp near the servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psoqhufdxg.jpg

There the metal and teflon hose are cut to size and the steel cable is then tensioned and attached to the servo. I haven yet cut the steel cable to size because I might need to make some adjustments once I get the radio control hooked up. The red arrow points toward where the next step - gearshift - will attach.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuoo4nzgq.jpg

Gearshift - the parts

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspuysndrm.jpg

Easiest to first attach the pull bar (tried some other approaches first)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps93qjfhuc.jpg

And then mount these bits. The clamp attaches to the servo horn pointing downwards. They show it mounted both ways in the manual.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrfq6apiw.jpg

Installed. There is a mark on the bit sticking out from the gearbox that indicates 2nd gear. (This is installed with the box in second gear) The springs are supposed to be only lightly compressed. (careful, I spend about 10 minutes looking for the one that sprung away)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfd4y4jr4.jpg

And last the steering linkage

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psa8x6zblm.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psecegmfp8.jpg

Now next would be the bowden cables of the diff locks of the axles. Hope they go in easier than the transferbox one.

Rakthi 06-22-2015 01:24 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

After yesterday's trouble with the bowden cable I was prepared for another ordeal. However it all turned out to go rather easy.

First attach the bowden pull tube to the axle and guide it to the clamps that were installed way back and guide it through the frame to the clamps near the servo.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgtvyzeur.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspfgcnlgo.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psocsu0f1j.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskfl0m2gk.jpg

Then insert the steel cable, make sure it moves smoothly. Then cut bowden pull cable to size.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4iv3pgbw.jpg

Attach steel cable to the puller on the axle - I used a loop there before I put in the screw - and push cable till it comes out at the servo. (If I do this again, I will insert a screw in there before I even mount the axles to the frame. Saves a lot of fumbling)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrdftl5km.jpg

For those who wonder how the bowden is clamped in place on the axle:

The hole through which the tube goes is attached with a screw. You have to loosen this one a bit so you can push the hose through. Afterwards just tighten a bit and hose is clamped in place without being crushed.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pse5tqabuo.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshgzj8dwb.jpg

The next axle is same procedure

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnwwggeud.jpg

I first tried to run the pull cable through the indicated hole in the frame, but that just complicated things. So went straight to the previously installed clamp.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjoyejkal.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psunxls0jo.jpg

Tensioned up and eft some extra for possible later adjustments. Cut all the cable ends shorter and added a dab of crazy glue to stop fraying.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvhqic8vv.jpg

Was going to stop here, but then noticed that the left over bits from the rear axles were more than enough to do the front ones too. (so still have a complete set of cables from the front axles that should sufficient to redo the lot) Again same procedure, but routing is way simpler. (did have to take of the steering linkage for the 2nd axle to be able to get the the screw that allows the cable to be attached to the axle. Since it was off I also adjusted the tracking that was a bit off)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psu1hvdml4.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszim223du.jpg

On a side note ... when I installed the motor/gearbox I left the cables from the servos dangling where they were ... not a smart move. Took some fiddling to get them where they belonged.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuvhrxkme.jpg

Well, now is the time to get out the remote control and start fine tuning the servos and checking gearshift and steering before I start on the driver's cabin etc.

Rakthi 06-23-2015 08:58 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Spend time sorting out the settings. Lucky the RC is pre-programmed by ScaleART for their models. Saves a lot of time. Just pick the variation you want and you got the basic settings.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psw1yqv8in.jpg

Of course they still need a bit of fine tuning.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyakw1f1j.jpg

Had a bit of a problem with the ESC ... took me a while to figure out how to do it. First spend time looking for the jumper before I realised it was already on the ESC although on the wrong pins. Then couldn't get the jumper off the pins so I could move them to the program pins to "marry" the ESC to the Sender. Had to cut the heat shrink off. Also having the instructions in technical German was a tad confusing ..

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshowgmruc.jpg

Well got it all sorted

Just one little problem ... mixed up the plug position from the trailer coupling servos with that of the gearbox servo and succeeded in burning out the one from the gearshift ... Lucky the one from the trailer coupling in the back is the same. So guess I will have a manual trailer coupling until the new servo I ordered arrives.

Meanwhile the truck has moved under its own power. Now just sort out some little niggles in the servo settings. Like why the front diff lock servo locks the diff when I turn on the power etc.

Rakthi 06-24-2015 12:17 AM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

I was lucky that to replace the fried servo I did not need to take the whole contraption out of the frame. Was a bit tight, but succeeded in doing it without major surgery. Before I replaced the burned on with the one from the trailer coupling, I followed Propshafts method of cutting off a bit of the rubber around the wires. Made it much easier to get the screw in, and as an added bonus I can now get the wire away from the servo horn of the centre diff. (So thank you Propshaft!)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrxk8d8jq.jpg

Just look at the difference.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfrdpymfe.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmdlcmnvm.jpg

So that's one very burned servo ...

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pschmbjoqe.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjecyhrth.jpg

All because firstly, I was so stupid not to label the plugs correctly, and secondly I didn't check the numbers on the slots small as they might be ... Lesson learned.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvwwzapet.jpg

Guess the servo burned out because the trailer coupling was set for the full 100% sweep, thus keeping the servo trying to reach its endpoint.

All that is sorted now. Made easy peasy with the Commander Sender. Here adjusting the rear diff lock servo. Only needs about 50% of it's travel to be locked.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psofcihtlb.jpg

And the problem with the servos of the centre and front was just reversing the directions of operation.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslh8tzsi5.jpg

So all servos now have their limit of travel set, so no more buzzing or juddering anymore.

Then check the tension on the pull cables and trim them to size. Adding a bit of crazy glue at the ends so they don't fray.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2wd91kkn.jpg

The liquid electrical tape I ordered arrived yesterday. Going to use that to on the LED board of the rear lights instead of the home made piece of rubber.
