Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
I don't know about the m5 or m3 this is my first hydraulic model so haven't a clue which is best.
Radio at first planned to use a turnigy 9x (with updated firmware) as I have one and provided 8 channels with some nifty mixing channels etc. Then bought a turnigy 9xr pro cheap off eBay basically basically same but few more bells and whistles but same 8 channels to control. Quality of the magom. It looks like it's a nice engineered and built piece of kit, however I have found bits have come loose even before use so had to start removing bolts and grub screws to add lock tight. And at moment no instructions so got to make it up as I go along. I will know more when I get it running. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
No painting at moment, need to wet and dry boom & bucket before moving onto clear coating it all.
So on with the internals First plumbed up the pump to the valve block and figured the correct direction for the pump to ESC connectors https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...2/IMG_2998.JPG On with securing the electronics https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_...2/IMG_2995.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B...2/IMG_2996.JPG Easy access to the battery. Not going to bother with a switch so need access to disconnect battery https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...2/IMG_2997.JPG |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Can you give me some information on that electronic board shown in one of the pictures.

http://rctankelectronics.weebly.com/products.html I use them in my tanks and are great boards so decided to use in the excavator to control the tracks, slew motor, lights, sounds and exhaust smoke unit. It also has customable sounds so I can make it sound however I want. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Nice job, the wiring looks great!

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Very nice! And very impressive. Im a fan of Magomhrc. Very impressed with how far they've come in the last 3 yrs. must be doing something right because they're growing and getting more serious for sure!

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Thanks for the kind remarks.
Question on the hydraulics. Since the resivor tank is small how do I fill up the system with out running pump dry? Any comments on add oil and getting air out welcome total newbie with this stuff. Cheers |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
These are the steps for the Fumotec Komatsu 490LC. Should be similar. After each movement of the pushrods in the cylinder I would top up the oil if the tank is really that small. I was surprised at the total amount of oil needed.
First steps for hydraulics commissioning: -Mount all nipples using liquid gasket -Disconnect the cylinder pushrods from the Excavator arms, so there is no load on the cylinders. -Looking from the front of the excavator, make sure that the hydraulic pump runs in a clockwisedirection. -Open (anti-clockwise) the ‘max’ pressure valve (the little brass valve) 2 or 3 turns -Start the hydraulic pump with about 15-20% rpm -Close the ‘max’ pressure valve slowly until you reach 10-15 bar on the pressure gauge. -Now open the first valve a small amount in each directions, this should release the sealing rings in the cylinders (in case the cylinders have been stationary for a period of time). You should see the cylinders moving in each direction. -Once the cylinders are free to move then operate the valve to move the cylinder to its end position. Now operate the valve to move the cylinder to the opposite end of its travel, you may hear air bubbles returning to the oil tank. -Move the cylinder 5-10 times from one end position to the other until there is no air bubbles returning to the oil tank (you should see the air bubbles in the yellow tubes) -Repeat this procedure for all other cylinders -Once all the air has been eliminated from the system you can reconnect the cylinder pushrods to their mounting points. Increase the pressure in the hydraulic system to 20 bar and you should be ready to move the excavator arms. |

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Congradulations on getting her running.
Sounds like the pump is cavitating every now and then? Still got some air perhaps? |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Yeah I think still some air in system so will try work it out of the system.

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Update. Started on the main body.
Decided to add a fuel inlet which will actually be the smoke unit filler tube ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--...2/IMG_3061.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...2/IMG_3062.JPG And primer https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b...2/IMG_3064.JPG Mean while had a little play https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M...2/IMG_3067.JPG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHRkF2FxnN0 Then disaster :BH One of the track drive sprockets came loose so a strip down to get to tighten up the grub screw :AR https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o...2/IMG_3068.JPG |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
I have the same pump as you. Question....looking at the way you have it plumbed in on page 3, have you blown any lines or have you adjust the pressure? Also, is the pressure adjust screw that big brass screw on the bottom of the tank?
Thanks |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
It's a practical thing with such a small hydraulics tank, and I'm sure there is just enough oil in it in order to make the machine run smoothless, but what about heat development..? E.g Premacon use a pretty large tank, and much extra oil in the system, as a simple way of cooling.
Looking forward to hear how these valves and pump unit performs after some hours of running. I see no filter? The pump itself is well known to perform great, but I'm most curios about the valves, how leak-proof they will be. They are quite much cheaper than e.g. Premacon, naturally, and I might want to test them in my own machines in the future. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
I can't wait to see this thing in full color!

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Hi guys,
Sorry for lack of posting been busy. Not had too much run time but so far haven't blown any lines off and I only hand tightened the nipples. No leaks as yet but not had much use on any demanding ground. Painting nearly done, just clear coat left to do and transfer to be made and added. Got some pictures so will upload when on my computer. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
your first test run was alot smoother then my kat thats for sure
|
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
I've read very mixed things about their new line of hydros (the old one I wont comment on, we all know the deal). Can you let us know what happens after say 100 hours of runtime?

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Well he's an update.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...2/IMG_3319.JPG Split pipe as it comes off the pump. Thing is I didn't have pump running that high and I was indoors showing it off so wasn't putting it under any real strain. Will have a clean up another evening see if anything looks wrong. For now I'm thinking some clear laquer coat overspray might of weakended the pipe as it's gone at that place. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Hey Ian......EXACT same problem.
|
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Hi Rob,
Seen yours did your pipe balloon up first, think my it just popped open. Now replaced and running again. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...2/IMG_3331.JPG |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Bit more work this evening
More clear coat on the black as wasn't shiny enough https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...2/IMG_3369.JPG Got some vinyls made up https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Q...2/IMG_3371.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c...2/IMG_3372.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v...2/IMG_3373.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v...0-Ic42/001.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...0-Ic42/001.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b...0-Ic42/001.jpg When clear coat has dried on the lid I've a few more to add there. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Today I got to play in the garden.
So bit of weeding :DO https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--...2/IMG_3380.JPG Ran good, struggled pulling the grass/weeds out which I would expect. Gone through 2 x 2200mah 3S batteries running pump at 20-40% stalling the pistons with the load and no oil leaks pump and pipes only slightly warm so happy running okay so far. Until! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-t...2/IMG_3381.JPG Thought the grass had locked the tracks and caused a link to snap but looks like a simple derailment although too much tension in the spring to pop back on so looks like I need to open up the track to get back on :BH But all learning curve. Don't over tax tracks when crambed full of grass! |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Also this evening been playing with the settings on the radio.
So now I flick a switch it starts the pump at about 10%. Then Main boom arm when called for adds 20% Boom to bucket adds 10% Bucket adds 10% So overall the pump is running between 10% throttle at idle to a max 50% throttle with all 3 pistons been used. It works good but way too fast for me who was running it down at about 20-30% so will make another profile with less power so I can get use to it then switch back to this version when I need the power. |

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Just got a email back from Magom as i could not see the glass for the cab on there site but apparently they do it but they have not put it on there yet.

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Well be playing today, all running good. With the new settings to the pump running on demand getting much longer run time no issues with heat.
Also added a setting on the radio where flicking a switch on it automatically adds 20% throttle to the pump, bit like a boost option. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Great job on the paint and details!

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Great job on building the excavator it looks awesome  You must be proud! :D

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Thanks for the nice comments guys.
Yes I’m very happy with how it’s turned out, and now using it more to dig stuff I’m slowly getting using to controlling an excavator and having a lot of fun. Will post more videos when I do them. |
Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Where did you get your new slip ring?

Re: Metal Excavator - Magom HRC MG1.4
Hello! Great work on your 330D! :)
I've just bought one from Magom, but need your help about LEDs: what type and power LED have you used? They are very compact, yet pretty shiny! :) Greetings from Italy Fabio |

Hi all, not posted on the forum for ages.

I got to admit I haven’t had much time to use the excavator over the year (been busy with other projects) but will point out issues I have had. Not long after completed it the piston for the bucket stopped working, it had blown a seal/gasket. Magom sent replacements and the piston was easy to take apart and repair all in under half an hour. Not certain if the failure was manufacturing issue of my lack of skills as a new operator, running too high pressure digging into very hard ground. It happened, but hasn’t since so I’m not too worried and was a quick repair once I got replacement parts. The tracks aren’t that great driving over rough terrain, don’t grip in dirt and spinning on spot tends to derail a track. Again this might be me, digging in sticky dirt (most the videos I’ve seen RC excavators are on sand or dry dirt) The weight of the model seems light as the model tends to move rather than bucket through the dirt (my sticky dirt again). With sand this isn’t a problem. Overall still happy with it and glad I bought it. Just shame I haven’t had enough time to use it over the summer. |
