Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Wonderful, always delighted to watch the progress and thanks formpointing out the cat hair, i was wondering about your "watermark" ;)

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Tom, not really much progress, at the moment I'm just bumbling a bit around. And yes, having 4 very "helpful" cats gives lots of surprises. Might end up using this "watermark" as an excuse for a new camera.
Small update on the servo. Did some checking and the Hitec servo is a bit higher than the Robbe Servo ScaleART included with the axles before. (Robbe went out of business so those Servos are no longer available) I also checked the one I ruined in the previous build and it looks like you can not shave off a mm or so without messing with the structural integrity. The axles the gears are on would no longer hold secure. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmtyihwsw.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmutyubqo.jpg Am sure the clamp would hold the servo in place without being clipped in the slot on the side, but still would be nice to be able to sort out some sort of solution. Another thing to put on the "to do" list. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Got the frame ready to drill / enlarge holes for attaching the servo holder for the 2 rear axles.
For this needed to remove the rear fender, rear wheel and exhaust. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbqzlwgwo.jpg Holes drilled / enlarged http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrcm0mboa.jpg Made a simple bracket/clamp to hold servo. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmreyzc2.jpg Installed the servo. (Didn't remove the unneeded attachment point at this moment) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshoan15fz.jpg Servo holder bolted to the frame. Might elongate the holes a couple of mm so I can move it a bit more towards the fender. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgf3ss4lh.jpg Also could do with some washers near to the exhaust to bring it more in line. Is a tad off. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqwtya24o.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psectuffhh.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
The fuel tank (which will hold the servo for the front axle differential) is up next.
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjkfqytli.jpg A spacer is provided to take care of the narrowing of the frame. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstepfdykk.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslmh39sj0.jpg The other tank support will to here. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0rskpsgz.jpg The instructions indicated to install M2x8 bolts with the heads on the outside of the frame. Bit of a fiddle and as there were 4 M2x5 philips screws included with the package I ended up using those to install the supports. Easier that way. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psu5awdvk8.jpg I installed the fuel tank without the side covers for now. I tried the side covers for size and they were such a tight fit it was quite a hassle to get them back of. Also, since I am still waiting for the right front axle, I can't install the servo as of yet either. Will have to cut some holes in the tank to accommodate the bowden cable and the wiring of the servo. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscofimlwy.jpg A look at the inside of the tank: http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbwpzqwlp.jpg And with the holder for the servos in place http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshi864a8h.jpg The tank straps are clipped in place (and I messed up and installed them wrong way up as I found out later) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmfq0s1df.jpg These 2 little bits are needed to attach the straps to the supports. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscmqppslm.jpg A bit of bending involved. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmf3rfgxl.jpg Tank strapped in. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssaezbdyx.jpg Had a bit of trouble getting the strap to clip into the provided space. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscnbya0jq.jpg Only after seeing these pictures I noticed why I had a bit of trouble ... Well will redo it tomorrow or so. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfaihcdo7.jpg A nice touch is that the provided gas cap in not it plastic as I expected but is machined out of aluminium! |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Finally found some time to work on the truck.
Remembered just in time attach the supports for the electronic module to the frame. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslm8pvnri.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuyzz6oto.jpg Next comes the cross brace that will hold the motor/transfer/transmission. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0fyair8g.jpg At first I put it on the inside of the frame. And I used the wrong nuts too, so not enough thread for the nuts that will hold the gangplank in place. (should have checked the instructions) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psych0zj79.jpg These are the correct nuts. They are half the thickness of the model nuts. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmlcu2eaq.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqbmhzar5.jpg Screwing the motor into the gear- transfer box. (different from the AROCS where they were 2 separate units) The motor is kept from unscrewing by a grub screw. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psznuay0dr.jpg Ready to bolt to the support http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6xmpe7hj.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskz7xhdhm.jpg Gangplank on top - might turn it around to go over the exhaust. Don't like the fact you can see the gearbox support peaking out from under it. Overhang on the other side is wider. Of course after installing it, I noticed I had forgotten the earth strap of the motor. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrgfwa2vv.jpg Fixed. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyejuwelv.jpg Meanwhile got notice from ScaleART that the new front axle is on its way here. Hopefully it does not get stuck in Customs over the holidays ... |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Finally convinced myself to assemble the servo cluster that goes in front of the motor/gearbox. Not one of my favourite parts.
I am not doing a complete install on this because I will have to take it all apart again for painting later on. The servos, frame and nuts/bolts are included in the motor/gearbox module. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy2o2tkac.jpg First to go in is the steering servo. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjmgudjwh.jpg Next the guide for the bowden cable of the transfer box/center differential lock http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstfqfs701.jpg The holder for the bowden cable http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqiqo5ejx.jpg Followed by the servo for the gearbox and centre differential. The gearbox servo didn't seem to fit flush. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6yij5ui6.jpg This is because the Hitec servos have these ridges ... The previously supplied Robbe servos did not have them. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5ksito2g.jpg No big deal, a couple of strokes with a file and they are gone. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjqjjxrdv.jpg The servo cluster ready to be installed in the frame http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psukdlxeam.jpg And held in place with 4 screws. The holes in the servo frame have thread in them http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psogo6vprn.jpg Contrary to the AROCS, I didn't have to bend the leads of the motor out of the way to fit the servo cluster in place. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjds7nssf.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Great looking build Stephan, sure are a lot of pieces in these kits  Question does scaleart tell you to put the heads of the bolts on the inside of the frame rails ?
|
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Brandon, yup, the assembly drawings coming with the modules have the heads of the bolts on the inside. I did try to reverse some of them thinking it would be easier, but getting those nuts on the bolts on the inside of the frame is a nerve wrecking experience. Just holding the bolt with a finger while tightening the nut with the driver works like a charm. There is enough friction from the bolt head to be able to tighten the nut without having to go crazy. - Although, I must say, in some places one comes rather close to it :)

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Keep up the hard work
|
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
that is one bad *** build you got going, love the air suspension on the rear axels.
|
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
@ Northern Farmer - Brandon, sweating away here :)
@ Roundabout - Totally agree with you! But might take the air suspension of this one and save if for a possible future build. Articulation too limited for the intended usage of this truck ... :o :) |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Apart from the missing front axle that should arrive today or tomorrow according to the tracking info, installing the last bits to the frame.
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psolsgc210.jpg The TGX can be ordered with either the "street bumper" or the "steel bumper". I opted for the steel bumper. This means that the lower step of the cabin is attached to the frame. (I love this bit of detail) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbkporjbe.jpg The grid for the step is supposed to be glued on, but since I still need to paint it is just put in place on for the picture. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmga9vc52.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psggca1kgv.jpg Then the bash plate. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspu2kdxpd.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7rfde2l9.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspkvg8ipn.jpg The 4 bolts that will hold the front bumper. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswzd63nlc.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuq0uhokn.jpg The bumper still needs the lights installed and I need to do some alterations too before I can install it. I would like to attach the protection for the lights, but I will have to drill 8 1mm holes ... will be the question if I can work up the courage to drill those 8 holes ... http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdyviax0s.jpg I also got the optional front coupling for the truck. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscpec44qw.jpg For this I will need a 2.5 mm bit to drill out the circled holes in the bumper. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps10x2gv5y.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Tuesday evening got the new front axle delivered :)
Here some pictures to show the difference between the 2 axles - the one with the narrow centre is the new one. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstqzh7rus.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdmcrhddl.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfiytecc4.jpg Finally I can get rid of the little tub I used to support the truck http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxhq0fu43.jpg Previous I had added the spacer blocks for the front suspension. I found out that that way the truck was too high at the front when using the air suspension. So took it back out and re-installed the shorter screws. This leaves not much play on the front suspension, but it is still doable. Differential is not hitting the gearbox under compression. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psaqnzf76p.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5tqclgx6.jpg Axle installed, next the front Trilex rims. Here are the parts. I had to ream out the paint in the centre of the red front piece with a 10mm drill so it would fit over the centre nub. You can see the raised bit on the inside of the rim that will be clamped between the 2 pieces. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspdva8fir.jpg First the black part goes on. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrywigtu4.jpg Followed by the rim http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqfblumay.jpg And then the outside bit gets bolted on and the tire installed. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl3omz5ep.jpg To tell the truth, this is easier said than done - therefor the lack of pictures :). To line everything was a tedious job because the red part is really a very tight fit. I solved that by using two small pins that I inserted in the holes marked with the red arrows. This really made it a straightforward job. Next the connecting rod for the 2 front wheels http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfkhvqnps.jpg And finally the truck stands on its own wheels :) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psl7ro7dsh.jpg I did not insert the hubcaps of the rear wheels. They are a real pain to insert and an even bigger pain to get back out. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
In the package of the axle came some extra M2x8 bolts I had ordered for the rear wheels to replace the short bolts that came with the axles. As I mentioned before those short bolts were only 1 - 2 threads into the black part and came out rather easily. If tightened too hard they would strip the threads. As you can see one already fell out.
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdc8izhgw.jpg With the M2x8 in place, a strong and secure bond. I also prefer this look better and am thinking of cutting some M2x8s down to 6mm to use on the front wheels. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdnyojplf.jpg View from the back with the short bolts http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrwvuss8u.jpg With the M2x8 http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdkrkbdlg.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Drilled the holes needed for the head light protectors and the heavy front coupling.
All taped up ready for drilling http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqgzyqgam.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbklj1oql.jpg 8 little holes drilled http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszxlqbnhc.jpg Finished. I used a 1mm drill for the small holes and afterwards enlarged them a be with a 1/32" bit (1.19mm) from Dremel to fit the copper nails provided to hold the protection in place. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbpydqbsz.jpg Drilling the 2mm holes out to 2,5 mm was not as easy as expected. Needed to remove rather a lot of material. The original hole was not that deep. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psujan69zq.jpg Now have to paint the head light protection before I can continue. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Fantastic build ! Cant wait for the next update ..

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Thanks Tom, here a very tiny update ...
I painted the headlight protection with Humbrol 19 - as close as they have to RAL 3002. Also painted the heads of the copper nails provided to attach to the bumper. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjdx9kjwl.jpg Didn't get to install. Noticed that the holes for the protection are in or right at the square impression where the head lights will go. Did a quick test and looks like the top left and top right (arrows) will need careful shortening of the copper nails. The 3 other on each light just miss the light assembly. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslebge39n.jpg Can't do much more for the moment because I succeeded in sawing into my left thumb while messing with some stupid plants in the garden yesterday. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Just wondering why they light covers aren't nuts and screws and how are the nails held into stop them coming out ?
Cheers Tracy |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Tracy,
Yeah, was wondering that myself. Was a bit surprised to just find the metal plate with a little bag of copper nails and no instructions. Was hoping it would be more like on the Arocs where they provide an indentation for the first hole to drill and then you can use the protection bit as a template. They do have those thin bolts and nuts, they did include them with the Arocs visor, but then looking at it, the nut would really interfere with the placement of the head light unit. I will use superglue to glue the copper nails in place. That should do. There is no tension or load on the things. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Found myself with free time yesterday so made some progress on the bumper.
First needed to paint in the indicators. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2no7zwgt.jpg Next glue in the nails holding the head light protection http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjeu3rlf4.jpg Clip the copper nails off as close as possible http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszni5ihb9.jpg Insert the provided plastic to function as the headlight glass and install the headlights. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdsrzbkqi.jpg Install the LED board. Only held with one screw. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psndwqcsr6.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskhpl0mhi.jpg Then the rest of the bumper parts http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psr7z7zctc.jpg The step bar clips in the 4 provided holes. Supposed to be glued in place but was a very tight fit. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1n4tpn48.jpg The number plate holder goes in at the back of the bumper. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6dtm7jvq.jpg Next the handle and pin are inserted http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psa42ycvku.jpg Numberplate clipped on and the 10 plugs inserted. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswhptebjb.jpg Inside grillwork http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstd8lerfh.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmmeov7x2.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbkfkhfv4.jpg The number plate will need to be unclipped and removed to accommodate the spacers of the heavy duty front coupling. |

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
:) Hi Jolipe, glad you enjoy the thread
=============================== Started on the cabin. You can see that the MAN is an older design. The tolerances are not as tight as those on the AROCS. According to the manual, supposed to first attach the door hinge. However I received the kit with the door already in place. So left it like that. I presume they must have had a good reason for it. Probably has to do with the alignment of the doors. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxuowfjtp.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbbbchtxb.jpg Close up of the hinge http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psiu9ho1mc.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbw6rdpbw.jpg Next door handle (to be glued in with crazy glue) and the fender indicator glass that clips in from the outside. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5a2ememb.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psywejjl3m.jpg Followed by the steps. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7xn9mkac.jpg That slot in here http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswtzlptfq.jpg As you can see they will need a little fine tuning for a perfect fit. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psaiqf7rid.jpg Then the interior of the door. For some reason they delivered 2 sets of covers for the inside metal door cover. One set came with the optional carpet (the one with the holes) and the other one was with the steps/door handle and other little exterior bits. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslrxlueev.jpg First the door glass. Still have to remove the protective film http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psucv3tynz.jpg Then the metal insert http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pso3kgbks9.jpg Interior door fabric (the one with the holes easier to fit) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psffijqysq.jpg And the inside door panel http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psizpsv77y.jpg As you can see, I didn't install the stuff. Just checked for fit and finish. Now have to go look through the nuts and bolts delivered with the cabin to find the right ones. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
I made the same observation with carpets and already assembled doors ;)
While assembling you will see, what progress they made on cab construction between the man and arocs ... The arocs was a piece of cake compared to the man. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Tom, yes indeed, one of the reasons I am fitting things without assembling immediately. Read enough build threads on ScaleART MAN trucks to know that due to the larger tolerances between the parts there is some fiddling needed to make it all come together. Still the quality of the parts is excellent. Just a bit more work assembling. No rush on this one.

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
I just found this new build of yours, awesome! I havent been surfing the boards much lately. Subbed naturally. I love these scale art kits, so much detail and functionality. Watching this one to the end.

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Prop, going to take some time before this one is finished ... for some reason I can't seem to find time to work on it. And I will have to take the whole lot apart again for painting too. All good fun though.
========================= Today had some time to work on the cabin ... well give me one of those new Mercedes cabins any day ... the MAN needs way more tweaking with loosening and tightening screws to line things up. Here some pics. Forgot to take some of the front piece but since the left door is acting up, I have to redo that side so will try to remember to take pictures of that part. Assembled the doors. The magnet is glued in place. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psesfymntc.jpg On both doors I replaced the lower M2x4 countersunk screw with a M2x6. The M2x4 didn't seem to go deep enough. The arrow points to the galvanised one that will serve as a lock with the magnet. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psluvaboem.jpg Both done http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6eyaewsi.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswyyg7p9s.jpg Glue in the little side windows with 2 component glue, wait for it to set and stick on the black outline stickers. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8mfcpltb.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pschwam8c4.jpg Forgot to take the pics of the small black sticker that goes on the door frame. The front part attaches to the side parts same way as on the AROCS with cast holes that fit the hexagonal nuts. (will take pictures of that when I check why the door on the left is acting up) Different is this piece that connects the front to the side and at the same time acts as support for the interior of the cab. The 2 pins for the front cabin lock were already installed. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pscbsyms03.jpg A quick test fitting http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgwe3tobe.jpg Manual states to first do the side panel ... http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psw3aqlys0.jpg And then the angled piece. Tightening those allen bolts is an exercise in patience. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6orxhgkl.jpg Both sides installed. When all screws tightened, the left door pops open ... I guess I will have to remove some paint where the bottom hinge is captured in the provided slot of the front piece. Already got the paint of the bottom hinge which was a small improvement on the fit. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjuft5kg3.jpg Front view on the chassis. Will have to adjust the angle of the bumper once I got the roof and back of the cabin installed. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psisherosu.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
The difficulty with the left door turned out to be my own fault for over tightening the screws on that side ... :o
Assembling this cab needs a totally different approach than the AROCS one. Have to be way more careful and take your time with adjusting tension on screws etc. Here the missing pics from yesterday: As you can see same principle as the AROCS. 2 hexagonal openings to hold the nuts for the screws used to attach the side panel. The hole in the middle is for the wind deflector that will cover the holes. Note the 2 little pins that fit in the holes on the front part so the deflector will line up perfectly. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pskfani1cj.jpg Wind deflector - this bit is in plastic. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmonvbrmm.jpg Inside of the front where the bottom hinge of the door fits into. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psld5o61n4.jpg Door adjusted - and with the black sticker applied. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psopx8f5go.jpg Next is the roof and here I ran into a temporary hold ... the LED for the position lights and the indicator on the side of the cabin are missing. ScaleART already informed me they will send them, but this will take a couple of weeks ... So for now I will just test fit the rest of the cab. Roof outside and inside. The small holes are for the sun visor, the 2 big holes are for the rotating lights. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqfo1xeor.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrkq9lpd4.jpg A quick fit revealed they were not joking when they inform you in the manual to loosen the screws holding the side and front panels together. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspjep1xsx.jpg Here the roof with the recommended hardware to bolt it in place. The little key things in the front have to do with the front window. Just one little problem, all the screws were too long. The M3x8 should be M3x6 and the M3x6 should be M3x4 ... Used left over screws from the AROCS, but didn't have M3x4 for the little key things. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0v3u9rsm.jpg I also did not glue the 2 small position light covers in place yet either. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pss0cs5fzy.jpg One of the rotating lights http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjnte2zcv.jpg Opened up http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psyrggqcda.jpg Roof installed. The wires of the rotating light are supposed to go behind the attachment points of the roof, but since it all has to come off again didn't bother with it. Those wires are so thin, they are a pain. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psigciiqwa.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuzukqn1h.jpg Because of the slope of the roof there is some air between the roof and the beacons. Christian (Newcomer_2) sorted that on his TGS by putting some thin foam under it. Doesn't really bother me, but I will keep an eye out for a suitable material. Got the back panel out too, but didn't get around to installing it yet. Was surprised it was in plastic. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbmkr1owd.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psuurpg7jx.jpg |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Are they Pistenking beacons as they look it and from my experience are the best on the market ?
Cheers Tracy |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Yup Tracy, they are the Pistenking ones. Forgot to mention that. If you order them as optional extra from ScaleART, they will drill the holes in the roof for you.

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hi Jolipe, glad you enjoy it, but it you want to see a really detailed ScaleART thread, you should check out this one ... in German, but plenty of step by step pictures! :)
http://www.modelltruck.net/showthrea...astzugmaschine ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ So back to the TGS ... yesterday I took the whole cabin apart again and re-assembled it in a different order. First front and side panels, then roof, which went on without a hitch, and then those 2 black angle pieces that will hold the floor of the cabin. This way things lined up easier. So now time for the back piece. First need to add the metal lock bar for the rear. Need to drill out the 4 holes for the bolts. I used a 1.5mm bit. Bolts are 1.6mm. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pstbshwms8.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspyvms4iu.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswlcpvoxv.jpg Next is the 2 plastic covers for the cabin ventilation. These just glued in place http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psx66vzwdn.jpg Ready to be bolted to the rest of the cabin. Manual specs M3x8 for the top, but replaced those with M3x6. the 8 ones were too long (might work for the XXL version with the high roof). The rest of the screws are M2x8. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps05iu5fte.jpg The M2x8 are a bit long, so will replace them with shorter ones when I reassemble the cabin once i receive the LEDs. The little holes I circled are for optional airflow panels. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pseinng2vx.jpg Next the air intake cover on the left side of the cabin. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psajisnmom.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxwcuberk.jpg The openings are to run the wiring through to the electronics compartment. It will be covered by the other part of the air intake http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssz0gebpi.jpg Air intake cover laid in place (not attached yet) http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psp0es0mxo.jpg Cabin fitted to frame. Will need to adjust the angle of the bumper and extend the supporting arms of the heavy coupling. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psurxzyejh.jpg Back of cabin with air intake cover temporarily in place http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbwxzfvda.jpg Rear locking mechanism http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrw6fejqj.jpg Top view comparison with cabin from the Arocs http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psog52bjph.jpg Next up will put the electronic compartment in so I can see what is visible from the back and needs painting, then take the lot apart, paint and final assembly. Can't do much with the cabin until I get the position and indicator LEDs. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Hey Stephan. Those trucks are looking awesome.
Hows the Tatra doin? Just sitting a shelf like mine? Lol They have a 3rd version of it out now and I must say I think Im going to grab one. It has everything I wish the V2 had. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Yup, the Tatra is indeed gathering dust ... for some reason the cats love to sit on it.
http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psssyqqjt5.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqg6cfxtq.jpg Mhmm Version 3 ... didn't know that. They have obtained the official licensing from Tatra too. Looks like your list of projects to start is getting longer too :) |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Had some time and did a quick install of the electronic support module.
First the bottom plate goes in. Didn't have to cut or file anything, fitted like a charm. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0ponozaq.jpg This bottom plate bolts on to the 2 holders installed a while back. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psf5rpqxpu.jpg Then follows the rear box that will hold the battery and electrical distribution board http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pss7xewspd.jpg When doing the final install, the 4 pieces have to be bend over. Then a screw through it to bolt onto the bottom plate. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psowjfqvyy.jpg Following step is bolting one plate on each side to the stainless steel plate that holds the air filter and locking mechanism of the rear of the cab. Forgot to take a picture of it because getting those plates in place was colourful language moment. Then followed by a tray so there are 2 levels for the electronics. So plenty of room compared to the Arocs. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxrm7w9qw.jpg Bottom supposed to hold the ECS, receiver and sound module, the top level the light module. Since I have the Commander bus system, I don't have a light module. Plenty of room. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psoq7wkomd.jpg Also straightened the front bumper by lengthening the bars on the front coupling. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psiadcouic.jpg Picture of the back so I know what needs painting http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psepzaxgez.jpg http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqia4hcvi.jpg Now take the lot apart, paint and re-assemble adding all the missing bits like servos, cables, propshafts etc ... still need to come up with a solution for the rear lights too. Might be a while for an update ... |

The v3 has an over hauled drive train, seems to be geared lower now wich is good. Im definitely going to grab one at some point. Then what to do with my v2... My lists of projects is eclipsing my available time. I have my eye on the Ural from Cross, as well as a bin full of parts for a 1:10 Man Kat scratch build.... Oh yeah, and I have a tote full of parts for a Bruiser based Hilux that I havent had time to touch either.... I keep telling myself "soon" I'll get to these other builds. What are your plans for the Man? |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Plans for the TGX ... decided to replace the air suspension with a leaf suspension. The air suspension is not going to work in our back lot.
Next will be painting, am tempted to start on the trailer, but already have a bit of a problem keeping track of the small bits and pieces I will need to install when re-assembling. The trailer promises to be an interesting piece to assemble. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssdqeuuue.jpg On the Tatra V2, I am sure you can sell that one easy. Been thinking of selling mine, but the shipping from Malaysia would be rather expensive ... Found CAPOs Facebook page, looks indeed like they beefed up the whole drive train, better suspension (seems they are working on a working airbag one too), included an interior for the cab, each axle separate differential lock, more details (guess part of the licensing agreement) and different load area. https://www.facebook.com/Caporacing/...63920540393392 Interesting ... but I'll pass on this one ... saving up for a CAT 963D track loader ... |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Yeah its more about the scale for me, I love the scale art offerings but I find the scale on the small side for my tastes. And since theres really nothing else in the 1:10 scale market, I find myself limited for offerings. Still love following your builds tho so keep the updates coming!

Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
Guess I'm kind of committed to the 1:14.5 scale at the moment, the Tatra is kind of the white elephant. That new versions sure looks like it will be value for the money!
Now trying to remember where I put the thin brass plate so I can sort out the rear lights of the TGX. |
Re: ScaleART - Assembling a MAN TGX/XL 6x6 tractor & Trailer
After fiddling around with bits of paper trying to get some way to fix the rear lights to the fender I realised I could actually use the provided supports.
Just a matter of having the left one on the right and the right one on the left http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbvitcnaq.jpg So now it is simple a matter of cutting off the excess bits and drilling two holes so I can bolt it to the fender. Should work. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswwxy5goe.jpg I'll stick with this unless I get a better idea. |
