Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Then I thought, lets bolt the front on and see how big this thing really is…
http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2178.jpg So, I got that far, lets put the wheels on! http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2183.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2184.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2187.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2185.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2189.jpg That’s it for tonight…! |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Thank you for the link Rob, much apprreciated. :)
So what voltage are you planning to run Elliot? 3s, 4s lipo or 10cell NiMH? The final axle speed seems slow on my adt too, but with a big tire afix to it, it moves pretty quick. You're moving right along with the build... I should build this way too, before painting parts to find the trouble spots, but I have this resolute about doing things twice ...and all too often it happens anyway. :D |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Cheers Joe ( is it Joe with an "e" or without?)
Yes, the wheel speed did seem slow, but as you say, I think the large wheels will mean a faster ground speed. Although, I do prefer to drive them scale like, if that makes sense, ie slow.! Ref batteries, I think its designed for 12volts, or at least thats what everybody seems to use. Depending on room in the engine bay will determine what type of battery I use. I've used Lipo's in the past, but I've noticed a new battery on the market, Lifepo, they seem to have a large capacity for a fairly small size and they're voltage is very similar to Nimh I prefer to build it prior to painting, so I can ensure everything fits before painting. I used to be a measure once, cut twice kind if guy, but having had to do everything twice, I'm now a measure twice, cut once :D |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
With e. ;)
I see on the packaging of my track, swing motors for the vario hoe with a voltage range up to 15v too... so I wondered if these motors were designed for 4s lipo in mind? Got a link to Lifepo? Sounds interesting. Cheers, Joe |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Joe, looks like a nice model, well designed, like those lasercut parts!
Good source for geared motors, and I like your workbench too, cleanest I´ve seen and it comes with heating posibilities (:>) Dan |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
with an e it is!
Yeah, my motors label also states they will run between 4.5volts and 15volts. The biggest problem is finding a speed control that will handle the higher voltages. I'm used to RC car stuff, running 2S or 3S type batteries. I think 4S Lipo would be a little too high as a charged lipo is over 4.2volts per cell. But these 4S Lifepo cells http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14067 seem like a good replacement for the 12volt nicads/nimh. From what I have read they are the A123 cells that were used in the dewalt power tool range, they are stable and less prone to bursting into flames. I need to do a lot more reading, but they also appear to have a 2000+ life cycle? However, you'd need to buy new chargers  |

Yes it is well designed and very strong, its the first time I've seen and used laser cut parts and amazed how accurate everything is. Unfortunately the wife wanted to use my workbench tonight, something about cooking dinner... the cheek of it! :D So now I am confined to the cold workshop.... although I might bring it back in after supper! |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Funny you should mention "bursting into flame's". I encountered that problem over to a friend's shop, just before locking up one night. Kinda spooky to think the dang battery could of burned the shop down! Later, Neil#2 aka doodlebug.

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Im very leary of using lipos..there was a fella on the garden that lost a.truck while charging..bummer..Anyway Elliot congrats ...looks like a very well built machine...I see a few hoses and fittings..Did you get the pump with your order?..Is it the same one thats used with the excavators?..thanks for sharing the great photos ...Cheers lou

The other big problem with running them in our type models, is you must never let the cell run completley down, that also ruins them... better and safer to run Nimh...:) |

Ref the hydraulics, there are two options I believe, one with hydraulics one without. I went for the one with. It comes with everything, pipe, fittings etc. I assembled the pump last night... photos will be online tonight. Not sure if the pump is the same, I will ask Frank when I next speak to him. Elliot |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Looks great Elliot. :)
What color are you planning to paint it ? Keep the pictures coming:D |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Thank Ari, although its put the tipper build on hold for the moment :-)
Still not sure on the colour, was going for the Bell yellow, but after seeing the white ones... not so sure.??? |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Little bit of an update....
Well, after three evenings work, to cutout, file, sand, grind and glue the cab together… doesn’t look a lot of work from the three photos, but it took about 10 hours in total and was my least favorite job to date … http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2239.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2238.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2237.jpg |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
nice work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Looking good Elliot! I was under the impression all of the pieces would be assembly ready, guess not. I vote for Deere colors (black/yellow).

Thanks... I'd say its 95% ready to be bolted together, the cab section comes with all the excess around the edges, and this needs to be removed prior to fitting... Kind of hard to explain! I will try and find a picture.. Here's a picture of how it arrive, so you can see it needs to be cutout of the mould. http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z.../dumpercab.jpg |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Lookin Real Fine Elliot !
Thanks for posting photo's of your build, I really like the way this kit is designed. Very strong, looks like it is made to be used in the environment.. are you going with hyd steering or are you going to go with electric, I went with electric in my ADT and I really enjoy it.. Smooth and always returns to centre.. greg |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
This kit is looking awesome. I believe the words that describes the process of molding the cab parts would be 'vacuum formed'. I can understand why it would take 10 hours to get things looking clean and for the parts to fit well. Still, totally worth the effort, as this is going to be one sharp and tough model, when it's finished. Thanks for sharing the photos! Keep them coming. I vote for white paint, but it's your model, and it looks good in yellow too.

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Time to build the hydraulic rams… everything went together easily enough, although fitting the two scraper seals was tricky…
Here is how they looked before http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2258.jpg I know I keep saying it, but look at the engineering that’s gone into these… I love it! http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2264.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2263.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2261.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2260.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2259.jpg The tricky scraper seals, its ok stretching and fitting an o ring over something, try fitting it inside something.. http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2262.jpg Couldn’t work out why I still had 3 seals over… but every ram was the same… while putting the last one together, I pinched the seal twice… now I know why there were spares included! http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2265.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2268.jpg All done http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/IMG_2267.jpg |

thanks for the link Greg, I wasn't sure how strong a servo would be, but with the that gearing setup, i can imagine, very strong!

Thanks...
Boring Video alert... Chucked a speed controller in, along with a 2S battery, just to see how it moves... the hydraulics are not yet connected, but just wanted to see it roll on its own! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_M_g7lqtvo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdItP9s0tCk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y0aJ4bXM7g |

The articulation of the suspension is impressive. Can't wait to see the hydraulics operational. |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
How tall is it at it's highest point?
|
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Thanks all, it was ready for some power, so I felt the need to see it move!
Joe, its 13" or 33cm tall at its highest point, which is the rock guard mounted onto the bucket. http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/2542b66c.jpg or you could make it 12" by removing the rock guard..? http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/z...r/bde241cf.jpg |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Elliot. Your ADT build is turning out great. It looks like it's a well built machine, very well thought out to make it all fit in a small space. If you don't mind, the next time you contact the maker can you ask if the pressure relief valve can be purchased separately. That piece is looks well designed and that's a usable part, that' we're all looking for.
Thanks rob |

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
It lives! The oil arrived today, poured it in, cycled the cylinders a few times, watched all the air come out and voila, it steers and the bucket lifts up… what more could you want! Apart from a loose fitting, there were no other leaks!
Set it up to run 10 bar to start with, but the steering was very slow, plus it takes a while to get used to driving something that bends in the middle! Upped the pressure to 12 bar and very happy now… It can go a lot higher, but not needed at the moment. Programmed the transmitter to only activate the pump when needed, that took a while to get my head around! At least it moves and steers… and empties! I do need a better speed controller though it thermal overloaded towards the end…! Couple of boring videos… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBgVZYWHqL4 Loaded the bucket with 6 x 1.5 litres (which I think equates to 9kgs in weight?) of Evian’s finest and it lifted it with ease… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0WBloKimnU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLjPuIL0EE4 Well happy! |
Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
Elliot. Can't believe how fast you got it up and running, Great work. I amazed how tight it will turn, doesn't look like much space between the cupboards. Now you'll have to take it apart for paint or are you going to break it in a little more. Thanks and Looking forward to the reply from Frank.

Re: Bell 50 ton Dumper - ADT
12 inches eh? may not fit thru the window. :D
Great vids showing it's capabilities Elliot, thanx for making them & posting on youtube. :) Your tile floor, are the tiles 12 inch square? I counted four tiles for the turning radius. I'd up the pressure to maybe 15bar for quicker steering/dumping. Great to see you got the "mix" figured out... that's a trick that blows my mind, it's a "why didn't I think of that yrs ago" idea. :D ...maybe if I was a rc pilot & knew/understood about p-mixing programming. ;) |
