The Beier setup...

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

My thoughts on the Beier USM-RC-2

Well I don't recommend the Tamiya MFU as it lacks proper protection for use of LiPo Batteries.

Beier allows you to use any ESC or you can use their ESC and have extra switching options for sound and light control.

The USM-RC-2 comes with software that allows you to havrest sounds and program them into your soundmodule. Find an awesome Jake Break on YouTube and you can have that sound on your truck. In contrast the Tamiya units you are limited to what they choose. Beier gives multiple options for triggering your sound and lighting effects.

With the power of OpenTX and the FrSky Taranis Plus tx, one has almost as many options for transmitter setup as you do with the Beier Soundmodule.

Dean, good work.thanks for the link on the driver figures. You're painting skills on them look great.
Zache - I agree red is her color. I did min in purple and black. Ok but not great.

I didn't paint the interior.
Reggie Stephenson did it for me. He is on the Facebook group true scale truck stop.

As for my paintjob... the internet hides a bunch of drips and runs!

Started working on hooking up the lights and Beier soundmodul. This is almost as tedious as soldering up a quad copter!

Hi,

I can give you a comparison to the German Market. Here a MFU costs round about 350 EUR. It is easy to install but that's already the only advantage. It's absoluetly unflexible and definitely not usable for my projects. In my first Truck I had one, but it was replaced after 2 month.

My setup for my Trucks is the S22 ESC from Servonaut together with the USM-RC-2.

The advantages:
- Extremly comfortable ESC, nothing better on the market
- Ligjt and Sound with hundreds of options and possibilities. My US Trucks do have an Air pressure Starter sound. Can you do this with the MFU?
- I can install whatever kind of lights I want to have and I can define how they will behave.

If you are willing to invest a bit more time and work, you will get a dream of flexibility.

Beier also provides a Forum were you always get a super support.

The service and support from Beier and also Servonaut are premium, never had a better one (no, I'm not paid to write this ;) ).

The costs:
ESC 99 EUR
USM-RC-2 145 EUR
Speaker 10 EUR
LEDs and cables ca. 20 EUR

275 EUR for my combination or 350 EUR for the MFU.

Am I certain I want to do this? That doesn't show the five lights on the rear and two fog lights on the bumper! The truck worked fine before I thought about lights and sound...

YES IT IS!

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

gismow I am saving for a Beier UFR 1230 ESC to go with my USM-RC-2 sound module and EXM-2. So I have even more options for lights! I just wiash Beier would get their hands on a FrSky Taranis Plus or Taranis QX-7 and give me the option for my three position switches rather than only two position switches from the german radios.

thebat: You won't save any money by choosing Beier over say the Tamiya MFU but you have 10000% more setup options that Tamiya offers with the Beier setup!

Started soldering the wires where I could but screwed up the wires above cab. Going to have to take them all apart, remove the roof, re-solder the wires, solder on extensions, and re-install the roof.

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

So I was playing around with the slip in rainbow cord to connect to my lights. I was not satisfied with the connection I was getting.

So, I grabbed the original rainbow cord and started to separate the individual wires and started soldering them to the LEDs. I connected everything in the cab but the front and rear turn signals, front fogs, rear fogs, back up light and the brake lights.

I haven't tested anything but...When I get more done, I will take pictures. Then I have to start on the trailer!

I found some fenders on Thingiverse I saved the file to a USB drive and wend to my county library as they have two makerbot printers and printed them out.

Here is the results...

I spent the day soldering the individual lights to the rainbow cable. Four lights to go, all on the front of the truck. The front turn signals and the marker lights in front of the doors. I may turn the markers into turn signal repeaters.

Federal Refund came today so I ordered a UFR-1230 speed controller form Beier. Cant My setup will change from Digital Mixed to Digital and I will have motor and shifting sounds! Can't wait to get the Axial esc out of it!

I got my Beier UFR-1230 ESC, today. Tractor works fine remotely, but the lights and sounds do not work any more. I desperately need help!

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

I have a 8 ch rx in my rig. C1 is steering Ch3 is throttle Ch2 and Ch4 are for auxiliary things such as lights and sound functions. I have the gear select servo on CH5 as it has 3 positions that match the positions of the switch on the tx. If I were to convert all light and sound function to switches the Beier unit only recognises on off switches or two position switches unlike the three position switches on my taranis. So because of this all Sound effects and lighting functions have to be on Ch2 and CH4

Do u have speed control connected to the usm 2 so they can interact

DrDiff 02-16-2018 07:40 PM

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

Currently the ESC is attached to ch1, ch3, and ch2. The cable from the output1 of the ESC is going to Ch1 input on the sound module. The shifter servo is plugged into Ch5. Ch6 is plugged into the Ch3 port on the Sound Module and Ch7 is plugged into Ch4 port of the sound module.

U have to enable digital mode with esc in sound teacher and drive teacher for esc then it will work together

On the General tab of Sound manager I have the mode Digital with UFR ESC selected.

I unplugged all the connections between the RX and the Sound module. I now have the ability to turn on the lights and off the lights I have some sounds working. Soldering has become quite difficult after my stroke on February 5th but I can re-learn how to do it.

Re: DrDiff's Tamiya Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Build

I know it has been a while but after reading the instruction manual for both the Beier ESC and Sound module I have made even more changes I finally have some control over sound and lights. One of my changes involved moving the final three light positions around and thus a re-wiring of those three lights.

I have started seeing 1:1 Cascadias with cow catchers and other mods. I guess it is because they have been sold out of fleet service and independent owner operators are purchasing them. So I guess the fenders aren't as unrealistic as I had first thought.
