There was no works on the truck since a long time because I made big change in my workplace and got some new equipment :D. Now, I only need time :rolleyes: But I still follow your threads ;)

Thanks guys! I'm also working on new fuel tanks and wheels... But it's more complicated for me and and it could take some times... Not always easy to learn at my age ;) but still fun!

There's my first attempt to make my trucks wheels :D It still a prototype and need many rectifications, mostly on finishing, but all in all I'm satisfied of that first step. The "axle" is only a machining aid ;)

Yes I did :) It's my third job since I got my new tools some weeks ago. I love to play with them :D. Just need skill and knowledge now, and it's not the easy part ;). Ho... and I forgot to mention that the right one on the picture where you see two wheels is a stock Tamiya, just to compare :o
In fact, it's mostly because I wanted ten holes wheels :rolleyes:

Here's my first four rear wheels almost finished (some polishing...).

Not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with the results. They will move at the rear as the better ones will come ;) I'm working now on the inner wheels. I'll post better pics after these be done.

Those wheels are very good for a first try at making them. Polishing aluminum is an art in itself. Very nice touch to finish your truck and trailers :D

I am well impressed. I know some people churn out tons of wheels, but they do it all the time. For you to turn out that quality at a first attempt is really amazing.

But I dont't think that "first attempt" is exactly the real term :D, I scrapped a couple of them in the learning process ;).
The ones on the last picture are not polished except the third, althought I'm not sure it makes a big difference on the picture. There's one after some polishing.

I used some type of littles abrasives sponges to obtain the finish (from 400 to 1400) on the first picture, and an silver polish named Sylvo on this one, but I'm not sure it's a good way... Maybe someone know?

go at them the same way you would on your 1:1. when I worked in an aluminum fab shop, we sanded with 1500 grit sandpaper, then used autosol for a cutting polish.(you can get a quart for under $50 at most truck stops). then go over it with a finishing polish, one with no grit in it. canadian tire stuff would work.
what did you use to make them, just a lathe?

I also used a CNC mill to made them :rolleyes:
So many things to know, althought it's a relatively easy design...
But As I said, I have many others to do to complete all my rig and to date each one is better than the last, so they will move to the rear as better ones will be produced, keeping the best ones for the truck itself.

wheels look good , you don't need fancy tools to make nice stuff . I started with an antique lathe from WW1 a ratty drill press and a dremel :eek: Don't get me wrong CNC is cool :D but there are days I miss just cranking hand wheels :confused:

Seriously, I also think that the tool doesn't make the job by itself and a good builder can do incredible thing with very few tools. Many threads on this forum prove it. :rolleyes:
Unfortunatly I never tried a manual milling, cnc is my first experience with milling :o but I can understand what you mean by "crankink hand wheels" whe I'm using my manual lathe, and it's effectively a good feeling of working really on the stuff, more than via a computer! But cnc also help to make some shape easier, mostly for a newbie :)

they are hard to find , and if you find them , you need more then 2 guys to move them :eek: you are 100 % right with cnc . there's some stuff that would've taken me for ever on a manual . wait till I get some axles done :eek: ;)

Gun, Thanks! I was completely newbie when I started that build but completely addicted since that. It explain for a part that long sequence of build/unbuild... and some scales errors too :o But with time and the ideas found here, it's coming not too bad...
Also thanks to you Borenson, let me see what to do with that grill (effectively, it must be update ;)).
Ih, your loader is a piece of art! I'm out of the forum sometimes and I missed the "discussion" about your axles ;) I stay tuned now :)

The inner rear wheels must be ready soon, if I can find some times in the next few days :rolleyes:

Hi everyone!
I don't have big changes on my truck these last months, mostly because acquiring machining skills took most of my hobby times!
But just to say that I'm still there, there's some pics of my lasts evolutions. It's only a preassembly, many thing must be rearranged (alu sidings don't look as I want, for example :rolleyes:), but it show how I want it to look.
I'm stuck for at least two weeks now since I broke my belt lathe, while I was machining my new tanks :mad:
Last things I added were rear wheels of the tractor, the steps and air tanks, strech a bit the wheel base, the rear frame parts and bumber, and the fuel tanks I'm working on actually. The alu siding will be change for a better look and a better adjustment.

Yes Dabears, I made the tapered ends. I considered first to use the Knight Hauler ones (in plastic), and finally made them in alu for a better support of the rear shocks... A new paint job of the frame should be done soon, including these parts (except the light plate for sure ;)).

As you know it's my first build and I learn each days, so it's a great pleasure to receive your comments!
Next steps should be a new exhaust cover, new frame paint and a first real mounting of new parts on it.
Swagger, milling is really a great world to discover, but it's also (well... for me, at least ;)) some challenge... Don't hesistate if you have any question ! Not necessarely easy, but rewarding if your goal is to make specifics things you want...

Thanks B-Train! I would need a workshop and money before I could even consider a mill though, but someday, I would love to get one. I did engineering many years ago in school and was pretty handy with a lathe and mill back then, so hopefully, some of that would come back over time.
