Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
For the small stuff I always drill the holes a little larger than the recommended size and tap by hand...carefully. For tapping 3mm holes, I use my cordless drill but don't tighten the chuck up super tight. Again using caution! I also use silicone spay or alcohol for lubricant.
I broke off my favorite 3mm tap recently in a customers box. The tap was getting dull and I was trying to thread a hole near a weld. The alum gets soft and galls easy where its been welded and I was trying to tap it dry(lube messes up powder coat). Anyway it broke off, I said a few bad words, calmed down and tried to grab the end that was sticking out. I got it to move but it broke off flush causing me to say more bad words. I tried heating the area with the TIG torch thinking it would swell the aluminum and make the hole loose. That didn't work but I noticed that the tap was melting so it gave me an idea. I TIG welded a nail to the broken tap and wound it right out! What a relief!:D http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps44e76ae3.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pseae13d9d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb147604d.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
REG !!!! You're killing me with those wheels man and with the sweet metal body work... Just absolutely amazing! If you happen to "accidently" make a complete other set of those wheels and hubs I call first dibs :D
Ayoub |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
I use a specific cutting oil for tapping aluminum & chuck the tap in a cordeless drill too... depending of the thickness of the piece you're tapping, you'll likely have to back the tap out several times, clean off the filings (I use a brass bristle brush) & relube before you tap all the way through... the cordless drill makes fast work of that.
I chuck the tap gripping the smooth round, instead of the squared end, so the tap slips easily when the cutting threads get too full of chips. ;) That's pretty trick welding Reg to fish the broken tap out! I'm looking forward to getting my own tig welder here shortly & learning the craft. :) |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks for the pointers. I thought about drilling a bigger hole and will use this tip from now on.
I broke a few bits in aluminum, and I wasn't able to get them out. I tried using alum to corrode the bits, and I think this may work with more time. http://etsymetal.blogspot.ca/2009/01...t-removal.html Looking forward to more updates on this project! :) |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Nothing really went as planned for me today but I did get started on the rear wheels and finished my spare. For the rear wheels I am attempting to stamp out the centers, do a little machining and then press them into the rim. So far I have made a couple of dies and successfully punched out one center to play with. I am not sure what I will end up doing as it is kinda trial and error at this point. I will try to mess around with this a little more over the next couple of days and nail down a setup.
This is what the first one looks like prior to drilling the bolt circle. I will put it back in the lathe to clean up the edge where the center meets the rim eventually. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5573dd89.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6a87fb4.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb0046ff1.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb105f282.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pseb1476f1.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2e9eb73b.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3deee117.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Well I spent the whole day working on the wheels today. I made some modifications to my dies this morning and tried some different setups in the mill. Anyway, long story short I think I have a wheel that I am happy with for the truck. It always seems like the hard part is setting up for the job. Once you get all the tooling sorted out you have no excuse to use it anymore! Oh well...
Here's a few pictures of the parts and the assembled wheels. I ordered some 1/8 nuts as suggested so once they get here I will button it all up! http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps825be5ce.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps67ed92f9.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd9d972e4.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb7bbbebf.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9fae41bb.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd8e6fe8d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5ce6c68d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psfa14b0f6.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3012309e.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps93f7baea.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psfee2ff24.jpg I still have some caps to make and some machining on the rear hubs left to do. Let me know what you think of the wheels. Thanks for looking |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Man this is sweet Reg! Every now and then a biuld like this comes along and just leaves my speechless. Your scratch biulding skills are unbelievable.

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Hey Reg, yer makin yer own freeze plug's :D:D:D Keep up the creativity! Yer giving me ideas :p:lol:
Cheer's, Neil. |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Well there you go, freeze plugs in cylinder blocks... I thought the shape looked awfully familiar. :D
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Haha there not frost plugs but I guess they do kinda look that way. I am pressing flat 0.050 sheet into the shape of the wheel center. I guess frost plugs may work if you could get them the right size though.

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Reg.. Rims look spot on, just right for the truck...
Wayne |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Hi Reg great trick withe the nail to get the tap out I could have used that a thousand times I am always breaking taps. Ed

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
When I started this I only planned to scratch build a body. Now it appears that I have got a bit too for past that so I guess that I will just keep going...
I finished the rear hubs today and did some final machining on the wheels. I think this is going to be the best looking Hayes HD/RC in the world:rolleyes:....LOL I'm positive that it is the only one so that's not really a lie.... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1364b5db.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps36265adf.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps491ee69e.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps135e8ad8.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3b6b4aea.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps43dc348e.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps84ac9003.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psa0af6cf2.jpg Thanks for looking! |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Reg great job on the wheels and the hubs especially the hubs they came out great very realistic looking. Ed
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
those wheels and hubs look great. what size are the axel bolts on the hub?
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Heck yea Reg that baby is looking so sweet. Any idea for a color scheme yet?
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks guys. The hub "studs" are 2-56 bolts.
I was torn between two color combos. Both were from former BC forestry giants that are long gone now. Both paint schemes are close to the pattern on my 850KW but one is orange, white and green(BC Forest Products) and the other is red, white and green(MacMillan Bloedel). My wife said it needs to be red so M&B colors it is! These are the trucks that I was most fond of as a kid anyway so it suits me just fine. I put in a 9 hour day yesterday and got a good start on the box. I think it is looking the part of an old heavy duty truck now and I think the box is turning out pretty good. Maybe I should start building and selling boxes...Oh wait a minute:rolleyes:... Still plenty to do! More to come later. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps551c6ef4.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb04552b9.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4b2ffc87.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps646d52b2.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps032456aa.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps65865fd6.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9ecc6fa5.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8a9e09e8.jpg |

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
RCP57-very nice machine work on the wheels. They look like the real deal. I am not really a truck guy but this truck reminds me of a smaller version of the last one you built. Keep up the good work..
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks modelman. This truck is very similar to the Kenworth in a lot of ways. I can't believe how much easier it is to build a truck in this scale when you can just buy axles and suspension instead of making it from scratch. This truck will likely be ready for paint in the time it took for me to build the rear suspension and axles for the 1/10 KW. Hopefully the parts I am waiting for so up this week so that I can take it for a test drive.
Here's a little update from yesterday. I didn't spend much time on it but I did manage to make the tailgate and add the rungs for the ladders on each side of the box. I also cut up some pieces for the fuel tanks but I haven't done any machining on them yet. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps64ff4db7.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8c282860.jpg I have made this tailgate so that it lifts quite high. Hopefully it works out with my mechanical latches. You need it to lift out of the way when you are hauling big rocks and stumps... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3426d541.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps104575a6.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps000ee8d3.jpg Thanks for following along! |

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
good job Reg . looks like I got some competition with wheels now :p :p you going to make the gate lift up ? if you need idea on how I'll show you . Heres my 1st truck ( before cnc or anything accept clapped out 1911 lathe and a dremel , aluminum welding capabilities ) I think I have a vid of the gate lifting on my you tube channel .

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks guys.
Steve, I don't think you have much competition on the wheels coming from me! It took me about 3 days to make the wheels and hubs.... I am happy with how they turned out though, especially the rears. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but the wheels are wider that stock on every axle too, making the stance 1cm wider. The box is also 1cm wider than normal. The tires I have ordered are taller and wider than the Tamiya ones so they should fill out the rims just right and add to the off-highway look of the truck. I hadn't planned on lifting the gate but that might be a cool idea! I will look through your channel tonight and see if I can find the video. Reg |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
If not I'll get 1 in 2 weeks at the cabin fever show . My 1st steel wheels where stamped in steel much like you did . accept I tried to weld together  I'll tell you this , making wheels in mass by hand sucks !!! I'll never go back to that again . It's ok for yourself kinda fun and a lil pride that you can do it , but gets old fast .
edit : not on you tube but in my p'bucket a pic at the gate http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...70gatelift.jpg vid http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/z...ilgatelift.jpg |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks for the pictures Steve.
I had a couple things come in the mail today(besides bills)! I got the front suspension that I picked up from Alfy(thanks:D) and my order from RC4WD. Once I assembled the front suspension and figured out where it needed to go, I took it back apart and made up this big mount for the front springs and torque arms. I turned the axle around and swapped the spindles left for right so that the threaded holes pointed forward. This will give me an anchor point on the axle for the torque arms. I will also add more to this assembly so that the bumper is supported by it but this was enough for today. It is beautiful here and a shame to have spent most of the day indoors but I can't help myself.... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2bbdc4ea.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps12d0c132.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps896ed5e9.jpg Now that the front suspension is in I can almost see it driving around. Just need to mount the steering servo and buy a receiver.... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps788ee384.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps55f79d9d.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63073dd8.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps333bc1fc.jpg |

As always, that's great work!
The wheels really complete the truck. |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
WOW, what a great build!! I love the attention to detail you are putting into this truck. I like all of the small bolts your using. Can't wait to see more

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
A little more detail and a few more small bolts...
An update video...http://youtu.be/Hpjba5Bt1OE I made up the fuel tanks yesterday but made the mounts today... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psef585f75.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd8516d01.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7780622a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psbada1263.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9cd4c1f4.jpg I got started on the exhaust today as well. Amazing build as usual Reg, you have mad skills (and lots of free time lol):D
There is a guy on face book that shares amazing photos of NW logging photos and this truck is one of his personal rides. http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0aa59cd5.jpg Cant wait to see it next to the kenworth. |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
What a nice looking truck Reg, what color scheme I s it going to be ?
greg |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks guys.
Trucker_Jo, That looks to be the same basic truck for sure! The nice thing about building a truck like this is that not one of them came out of the factory identical even if they were ordered together. I can build whatever I want within reason and it won't be wrong!lol Greg, The plan is to go with M&B colors. The only problem is trying to get the correct color red. I wanted to get a lot of this powder coated but I don't think I will get close enough on the color. Even to find a rattle can is going to be a challenge. I spent hours on this again today and made a bit more progress. I finished the under side of the box and wired it, mounted the air cleaner, and did a few other little things that haven't gone on yet. The air cleaner is held on with a bolt from the backside but I made up these little straps to make it look like they hold it on. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psb1029a8c.jpg Underside of the box http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7174d74f.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7ef808df.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps813280e5.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps201dd901.jpg |

Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Wow, I'm pretty much speechless. This is just phenomenal, the wheels and body work is great and the overall look is just spot on I can't wait to see the next round of updates.
I saw you mentioned you were looking for more scale looking hardware for the wheels, have you ever checked out lockedup rc, he's got a few different sized scale nuts, acorn nuts and scale bolts, ranging in size from 1/64, 2/56, to m3 etc etc here's a link for you. http://www.lockeduprc.com/Hardware_c_21.html Maybe something there will work for you --Dan |
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Thanks scalelover, I've been looking for scale bolts.
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
The Hayes is looking incredible. What's not to love? This thing is awesome. Scratchbuild a lot of a goodies for a unique truck on a smaller scale. Wow! And the best part is it's practically finished!
|
Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
Reg, what can i say , im speechless , your craftsmanship and fabrication work is top of the range , its good to see something no one has really built before , and i love your wheels
Keep up the great work , you won't disappoint Cheers Lucas |

Thanks very much for the link! They have some cool looking hardware for sure. I did make an order from Micro Fasteners and received it the other day. I ordered some 2-56x1/8 nuts and they look pretty good I just haven't put them on yet. I think I will be making an order from lockeduprc in the near future though as I need some scale metric stuff! Re: Hayes HD dump truck...RCP's style
A bit of an update. I shortened the frame 1/4" behind the axles to move the box forward. It now goes up and down as it should. I also did a little more body stuff and started to wire things. What I am most proud of from today though is that I was able to bend up the floor pan, toe pan, firewall and dashboard out of one piece of aluminum in one go!:jaw::bounce:
