Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Yesterday was so foggy I could hardly see across the road & drizzled rain most of the day... today I woke to see the ground was white!... though I didn't think to take a pic till 2pm. ...maybe by next wkend I get started with seeding crop... that tik tok is getting louder in my head everyday!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps99d6e8df.jpg Thank God for hobbies... something to keep me distracted. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psa098adb1.jpg The pile I was flat topping last wkend is just about gone, I'll push the rest of it up to the doorway... Steve, your compactor dozer would be perfect here. ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psc3ef0c31.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psc802b0ff.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps2475578b.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps4b0f58c4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps0356db1c.jpg I got the rest of the week to make this pile disappear, build up the edges & the other doorway. ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...pseb239252.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psc040e1ef.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psdb47110e.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps9b033351.jpg |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Nice, that Vario is a beast. I read about you running it at 35Bar, that is some power!!

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
I'll have to get up there some winter . I have to get a passport now  last time I was in canada , I just drove in with no stopping .

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Yeah, not so easy to travel anymore... my passport expired in Nov 2012.
Having this area in the back of workshop + the lean-to when I get it built this summer is much more appealing to have company than if it were just the basement... the basement would be risky to even have 3ppl down there not to step on anything. Where I live, you would have to drive to get here b/c the closest major airport for jets is 4hrs away. The Island boys however, one of them is a pilot & if 4 of them went together to rent a small Cessna? they could fly right to my town just nine miles away... just saying. :D |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
It wouldn't be this winter for me . I'm determined to have a dozer for cabin fever next year . My td 40 is close and if I stick to it I'll have it done . I gotta stop jumpin around  We for the most part travel as a family so when I come you got 4 operators .

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Nice to see the pictures Joe! Are you bringing any other members of the fleet up from the basement?

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
That's about it Tech9, other than the SA loader & Tamiya trks... the 2nd dirt pile is just about gone & everything will be going home soon. :D
Just look for the small house on the prairie with a green roof Greg, that me! :D This how I finished the 1st pile... I was impressed with how well that small Stahl pushed & packed, when I (205lbs) stepped on the dirt I didn't leave much of a print... of course the dirt is quite moist. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps74861ec4.jpg This afternoon I went to work on the other pile flattening it out, did most of it inside of 40mins with the 850. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps9783d33c.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps135f57e9.jpg Then put lil Stahl to work making it smooth & level. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps59028519.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps6bc38d1e.jpg Then what to do...? Idle hands is the Devil's workshop.... :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps49776e8b.jpg I adjusted the tx stick for no spring center, but without the "ratchet arm" in place (I don't know where I put that yrs ago), I was only getting about 2/3 throttle in each direction before the last bit of spring tension interfered. Amazing what this lil 12lbs dozer was capable of, the two machines working together, pan taking a 1/2 to 3/4 inch cut to pack a heaping load on in less than two feet!!! The dirt would pack in there so tight that the small push cyl struggled at 1st to push the load out! :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps35b2ef14.jpg I even made a movie of it fun fun fun ...enjoy! :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaLx...ature=youtu.be |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Hey Joe !
I think I know where this is going......."I adjusted the tx stick for no spring center" ....I can't wait........for the Grand Parade back home.....:D It is a ton o fun to watch you operating those machines. |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Ok now your just showing off:lol::lol:, Thats pretty neat especially as your drive one forward and backing the Stahl up at the same time without missing a beat:jaw: NICE!
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
wow!! That's great joe! You don't need any help. Looks like you have it figured out. Next we will see the video of you operating the excvtr. with your feet while running the dozer and scraper :D .That takes some good hand-eye coordination. Good job.

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Thanx for your kind words fellas.
This dirt is so wet! After about 30 push loads, the surface developed a nearly impenetrable crust & the track motors of the lil Stahl dozer were nearly stalling with the tracks having too good of traction, I even tried to rip it with the dozer & either didn't penetrate much or hook deep & stopped the dozer... so time to bring in the muscle to break it all up again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGceShzHdiA But then the pile was too narrow & I kept sliding off either side with the pan... so now I just load the pan with JD850 to disperse the last of the dirt pile to the outer edges. I can get it a lot fuller this way & do it less time too! ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUDbvIBRFQY |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Joe-that JD850 is impressive!! It moves a lot of dirt very fast. Nice videos. Looks like your work on this site is moving along great. Will this part of the shop be a dirt floor or will it be concrete?

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Hey.. now you have the tractor and it has the hydraulics.. you could make a tow behind grader :D :D :D :D
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Indeed Tom, I have enjoyed this powerful excavator since the 1st day I turned it on. The back of shop will not be cement, I planned it this way. ;)
It's already on the 'to-do' list Dean, but with only 3 valves in the tractor, some of the grader functions may be operated with Firgelli actuators. ;) |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Hey Joe, have you considered mounting both radios to a tv tray with Velcro? Just a thought. Looks like fun in the new area!

Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
How about a big dump trailer for the Bell?
|

I suggest this setup :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgcweoyccCo
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Great vid Emil! Thanx for posting it.
But not likely I make anymore end dump trls... I'm thinking more along the lines of a belly dumper road train of 4 or 5 trls, capacity roughly two 5ga pails worth. :D |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
wow egronvold! that was worth the watch!
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Just spent the last 3 nights reading through the majority of this, absolutely amazing stuff!
The Vario excavator has to be one of the best machines on the market, makes me want one so badly! Thats screening bucket too! Top work Joe keep it up! Calum |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Thank you Calum. :)
Finishing seeding 10 day ago, I did some hauling into the back my of workshop with the Mammoth. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps98b9e5cf.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps453ff5df.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps5a6cbf19.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps77283a49.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps3ed5b072.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps2dd397b9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps845605c3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...pseba0bb09.jpg But it's a looong haul for just one trk at a time... which got me motivated to finish the pup for my GL this wkend. ;) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psd3a91ef6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps3fa67d93.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ps32602d6f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psea618cd8.jpg I put both the GL & KH on my DX18 radio & bind them both to the same model copy - meaning I can drive them both at the same time from one radio. The GL for/rev & steering is on the left stick and the KH for/rev & steering is on the right stick. Both trks have AR8000 receivers (8ch), so the shift servos for the 3spd trans are not connected in either trk, each trk is currently using 4chs, not enough chs left to include the 3spds too. Both trks are geared differently too, so the GL is locked in 3rd gear & the KH in 2nd making them both virtually the same speed... the GL might be a wee bit faster. I put the GL's dump boxes on Aux 1 & 2 (3pos stick switches), and the KH's on Aux 4 & 5 (rotary sliders on sides of radio), in which I had to re-assign Aux 4 to Aux 3 & Aux 5 to Gear. By the time I got the radio programmed & the trks functioning correctly I was almost out of daylight... but I did get 3 loads of practice. Trying to drive two trks simultaneously is mind blowing difficult!!! .... especially rounding corners, I would start right turn the lead trk & couldn't help but start to turn the following trk right as well ...or if one trk was going left while the other going right, I would over steer both when I intended to go straight... It really took a lot of mental capacity to try to drive one trk separate from the other at the same time... I almost ran into myself a few times & just let go of both sticks in the nick of time! :D |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Awesome idea Lil Giants, yep awesome.
Cheers Paul |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Nice job ! So where is the video ?
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Video of you driving two trucks at the same time would be nice..... I have a hard time driving one at a time sometimes never mid two......
Wayne |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Joe, you'd be even busier than a one armed paper hanger!! Great job on figuring out the radio for two vehicles
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Wow Awesome stuff
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Yup, I agree driving two trucks at once is not that impressive of a feat if you are actually doing it at all. Anyone can park two trucks and take a picture of them.:D:D:D Now operating a video camera at the same time takes it to a whole new level. :)
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Hi joe-I can't imagine trying to drive-2-trucks at once but if anyone can I would bet on you. I have heard a lot of bad things about the "mammoth" trucks but if I remember correctly you have had yours for a long time. Have you done up-grades to it or is it stock. Looks like it hauls a nice size load.
|
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
With more practice you might be the only person in the world to drive two RC vehicles from one radio at the same time. I'd like to see a video of you driving both trucks now and then one after you've had about a months worth of practice. Good workout for your brain.
I love seeing that Vario in action. |

Here I thought operating the scraper and the Stahl at the same was neat. But 2 trucks on one radio at the same time!?!
How are you going to top that Joe? |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)

That is pretty neat Joe! You should put a camera on the second truck... |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Quite the buzz with the talk of two trucking :D... I made a vid yesterday, but using a headband camera holder to film, I never know where the darn thing is pointing & most of it was with the camera too high & can't see the 2nd trk.
So I did it again just before dark tonite & this time the camera is almost too low to show the 850 loading the trks :(... but the trks are view 90% of the time... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1-6...ature=youtu.be Quote:
Right from the start I had this rc on a 4ch stick radio & added an esc for the dump motor drive. The esc is plugged in through Plus 1 unit to make use of the built-in limit switches, as well as Y'd to a separate ch. It'll dump with the trk moving forward at half throttle, but not in reverse. I suppose the bad things you heard was the dump wouldn't work correctly b/c with too much weight on the steer axle, the servo for steer couldn't turn sharp enough to activate the dump? The separate esc on a separate ch fixed that. This Mammoth hauled close to 3cubes in the summer of 2005 up a 17 degree incline with about half of the dirt shown above on its back. The entire trip up the ramp, the left front tire was about a half inch in the air all the way to the top, that's how much torque that was put on the chassis to climb such a steep grade! :D It's been a great haul trk. ;) The wooden roadway across the grass shown in the vid, that was the ramp I made in 2005 to climb out of the basement. |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Those 20 minutes went by too fast, great video!
What happened to the green pup? Hydraulic leak/problem? |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
Awesome stuff Joe! Your GL pup trailer turned out looking great too!
I have been meaning to ask you a question but figured you would be too busy working. I guess you have a little time so.... Do the Viper marine esc's you use have a brake? I was looking at a tio marine 30 amp at a local shop but it has a brake before reverse and I don't know if you can shut it off. I was wanting to use it for the swing on my excavator so a brake would not be good. Thanks, Reg |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
RCP57, I use these http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
You hold the button on the ESC upon start up to program it for no brake. Inexpensive too. If this is off topic, sorry. |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
I haven't added oil to either trk nor pup since I built both in 2000... I don't see any leaks on the pup, but the wdc telescope cyls do sweat a little bit. The pup must've got low, the trl tilted back a little too much & the pump might have sucked a bit of air, probably have to re-bleed the cyl too.
Both the GL & KH are using the Viper Marine 15 for for/rev, it's a soft brake. Not sure how it would perform in a hoe. I used a Servonaut S20 esc in my 850 & the brake wasn't an impairment. Currently in the 850 it's a Sabertooth 2x12. Interesting is how the Sabertooth 2x12 in the GL behaves with the screwdrives on the dump boxes, the way it starts it almost seems the load is too heavy, but it's just the way it ramps up too speed. Rain @6:30 this morning, got a load on the trk to go to the pig barn, the roads might dry enough in another hr to get it there before another system hits after dinner... been busy spraying in crop all week, some great sunny 20C days & zero wind. What about you, I thought you be gone fishing by now? |
Re: Hauling Dirt out of my basement (present day)
The Sabertooth 2x12 in the GL might have the DIP switch set for Acceleration Ramping?
