Re: 140H Grader

Neat project looks great so far. I had an idea about the internal gear ring. What if you cut a circle the outside diameter you want and put some sheet metal or plastic on the edge so it sticks up the thickness of the gear you want. In the middle of this circle fix a large regular gear that gives the ring gear the right spacing and teeth. So basically make a temporary mold and then pour some strong epoxy type stuff it the space.

Hopefully my description makes some sense, if not I could do a quick drawing for ya. Not sure if this is a better idea then your chain idea, but just throwing it out there. I look forward to your updates.

Rob, your work is amazing! Wood, brass, aluminum, whatever material you use, you seem to have no problem getting your parts to be excellent duplicates of the 1:1 machine's parts. Glad to see you are gaining some ground on this build. It's going to be an awesome model when done. Can't wait to see it.

Re: 140H Grader

I managed to get a couple of significant pieces done this afternoon. I wanted to us my Robart 2'' stroke cylinders, but needed a clevis to work....so i got on the lathe and bandsaw and WALAA.

Finster, i have solved the internal tooth ring, i am using an r/c motorcycle chain and sprocket for the drive gear. I soldered the chain to the inside of my circle board. It is pretty true for just eyeing it in.

Steve, I am still trying to reach your 'master' status

Lorenzo, I really didn't measure the diameter, I just kinda went from the patterns, i will take a measurement

Dream, I am going to run as much hydraulic as possible. I haven't used a switch 8 before, i just know that i need quite-a-few 3 pos switches so i can center my valves

After seeing many of your previous builds, you constantly amaze me with what you build. No matter what material you choose, it seems like you master it with no problems. Can't wait to see this monster running around at one of the minitruck meets.
Keep up the GREAT work!!!

Thanks guys for all the supporting words. I am beginning to make a little headway on it. I will soon begin work on the interior. It's a fun project to build. I have to figure out things as I go along and the guys at the local Cat dealership have bent over backwards......twice to help me. I am learnign how to use my mini lathe and make some parts. If I had the skills of U expert machiners, I would be further along.:D:D:D

I think you're doing just fine on this build. Did you machine the lift pieces?

The lift pieces are made of wood (6 joints).

REALLY beautiful - it amazes me how it looks like cast iron after the paint ..... just boggling. Interesting comment about the local guys ED - even the business owners that I tend to frequent are helpful ...... at first I thought they would think me kinda nuts and such for 'playing with toys' ...... now I think they're kinda jealous ........ They all work hard for me ..... and others .....

Re: 140H Grader

Looks awesome. You definitely would not know any of it is wood after that paint. Do you do a layer of filler or something to get it that smooth? Have you looked at the Airtronics SD10G? Not sure it is enough channels for you, but all the switches are 3-pos. The F-14 is expandable enough that it would work but with all the decoders it ends being a lot of radio gear.
