Re: my first semi build (dump)
thanks Rob, I did try it off the trans and it did work but this is a new setup and I will be sticking with it, I am droping the 3 speed out and using a different sinigle speed tranny to save room and a channel on my radio for a couple other goodies I have planned. I not sure about hauling gravel yet but I am in the mood to build again so at least I am working on it

Re: my first semi build (dump)
had a couple hours to work on the Autocar today so I got a few things done first I build and fitted the cab sheild then installed it to the Dump box.
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0347.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0349.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0350.jpg then it was on to the rad grill peice I wasnt happy with the first on I built wrong shape needed to much work to make right ( old rad grill on pic above) so I decided to make a whole new one I cut and glued many layers of styrene together to form a block I could dremel and sand to the shape I wanted well as close as I can get with my limited skills. this is what I have so far http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0354.jpg thanks for looking |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Rock guard turned out great. That should keep the dints off the roof. From what I remember the rad turned out great too. Once you fill it in with black paint that will give it the look.
Rob |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
well I added some paint to make it look like this was moving along lol
cab is just primer.. I have more sanding and stuff to do . but I am really liking the primer look on this looks like a sun faded original paint from the 70's lol so I may keep this color after more sanding and few more coats . all opinions welcome. and yeah I know bad body work. just had no luck with filler on this one . http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0493.jpg |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Your getting closer and it's starting to look like a real truck. Nothing wrong with the body work, she's looking more Autocar all the time.

Re: my first semi build (dump)
well after 5 months off from shop... (just busy) I am back at autocar...
quick picture update... still lots to do and the body works is terrible, but I was so frustrated with the crap filler I was using I gave up. lol anyway here it is so far I still have some paint lines to clean up and and lots of details and parts to add.. but this is where it is heading. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0992.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG0994.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG1002.jpg |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Jason, the A Car is looking real good. Once you get the bling on her, she'll be too nice to put in a pit. Lou, Greg and I were moving dirt on Tues. afternoon and we were wondering what all you south island guys were up to. Looking forward to getting back at it myself, as it's that time of the year again!!!

Re: my first semi build (dump)
small update started adding detail to cab adding parts heres a few pics .. the thing with big rigs the more u add the better they look I just wish I had done a better job with this one but it is what it is ... all chrome parts were repainted with a chrome paint to match grill i made and to give all the parts a weather chrome look
added stacks which are moved from stock postion.. air cleaner and proper style door handle http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG1067.jpg roof lights, horns, head lights, marker lights, mirrors http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG1140.jpg this truck had side panels the open on hood instead of full hood coming up. added hood latches and handle and autocar logo on side. really bad pic logo looks better in person http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...i/IMAG1166.jpg thanks for looking |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
well had a few day over holidays and finished up alott of the Autocar. mud flaps, grill guard, electronics few more details to the box , hitch plate and tail lights. right now I am at the stage where I can say it is 95% done and ready to go to work ;) there is a few more little thing I could do . and the other 5% is all the things I plan to add in future but not now. so here are some pics and a guick video of my finish well for now autocar. working videos to come

Looks great! Will this be making its first appearence in Campbell River this year?

Re: my first semi build (dump)
Wow! The bed raise is one of the smoother and quieter units I've seen. Great job.

Re: my first semi build (dump)
That really looks good, well done Jason!
That screw is really smooth from the start! What thread did you use? Those wheels you have, they not come with center caps? Have you fashioned up any kind of tail gate lock, that's a must! ;) |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
I think there's a lot of very fine, detailed models of trucks around , like this one. The proud builder (should be) go around shows driving their trucks (and this is seen all over world on shows) running at speed and changes of directions not prototypical at all.
I've not been into buildning trucks (1:14) and don´t know if it´s the speed controllers that are that bad? Any idea from you guys working with those? I know from my time modeling trains and when DCC (computer controls) decoders was introduced that they could be programmed to not make "jump starts" possible. You could programe the effect of mass into acceleration and braking (this was funny when engineer was not use to it). Some of my friends had problems with that but it was a much more prototypical way of running trains. From videos it seems like the soundcontrols are good, the sound replicates to orgin, if it´s like trains, I don´t know. Is Cummins, Detroit, Caterpillar, Scania, Volvo ........ sound available? On trains you can have a Farbank Morse, GE, EMD even read that 3 engine gensets was available now. Dan |

and about the jumpy driving that was me lol I was just playing around it would drive smooth if I was trying and the video was just a test. and as for a sound mfu I can't see me paying that much money for sound as cool as it is it is over priced, maybe someday. thanks guys |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Hey, we should definately throw a load of dirt in it before any shows come up!:D I have a small pile of dirt that needs moving too...

I´m just trying to learn what's available and how this can be used when it comes to speed regulators. And about your modeling capacity, don't need to be sorry, I like this Autocar dumptruck a lot, you realy have the skills to make it look prototypical (like the front windows, fenders, grille guard ............). I get you now Dan.. yes hauling that d8 of yours would be a task for sure u almost would need a speed control system from a electic wheel chair or scooter to pull that lol |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Great build Jason ..took a while but well worth the wait ...Now if you left it in joes basemant for a few months it would look perfect ..lol..Good job and cant wait to load er up

Great build Jason
Looking forward to getting you out playing in the dirt. Be fun getting that one dirt. You must know me as you put short stacks on your truck, I dont think Lou could even TAG them... Greg |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
Hey Dan, I'll get you some info for building a big semi truck drive train. Hydrostatic drive is the ticket. I'm out driving over the road, be back to the house soon.

Re: my first semi build (dump)
That has to be the smoothest screw drive dump mechanism I have ever heard, or seen, run. Great job with that! Most howl and whine, when lifting, but yours sounds quiet and smooth. I'm sure it will handle whatever you can throw in the box.

Jason is a good guy that gives me lots of stuff to do that chalenges me as a new [and i use this word lightly] machinest. So the latest project is center caps for his wheels. Took some measurements off the wheel and then went to put it back on the front axle. Only to find that when it was tight the wheel is locked up. Took it apart and figured out the the total measurement of the two bearings and the sholder inside the rim were 0.022 more then the shank they ride on. Dam, guess i have to do some milling to his nice new wheels [no presure at all] So I took a peasce of scrap and made the bearing fit just right before I chuck up a wheel in the mill. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...n/IMAG1493.jpg After that I was sure it was right and took 0.025 out of the backside of the bearing sholder. Hot dam it worked just like hopped it would. Nice and tight but free to spin. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...pse790c9d5.jpg Now thats the wheel works back to making caps....not yet. The snout on the front wheel stands out to far for the look jason wants. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps7c5936f1.jpg As you can see so does the axle stub. Cool something thats a no brainer. Just trim it down. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps8fd695ba.jpg lol. Back to the mill with the new wheels. By by snout. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps0bf53e76.jpg Time to make a cap. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...psdd80582c.jpg No picture of it but there is a releaf in the backside of the cap for the axle stub and nut. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...psfac37264.jpg Heres the evolution of the caps I made with the right end one being the one Jason liked the most for the look he wants. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...n/IMAG1518.jpg In the end this is what they look like. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...n/IMAG1519.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/j...n/IMAG1520.jpg Back wheels next time. Thanks for lookin Mike |
Re: my first semi build (dump)
good to see you on the forum Mike, and great job on the caps I can't wait to get them back so I can get the Autocar back together and get it hauling some loads. Mike has made me some awesome custom wheels and pieces for my crawlers over the years and now my caps for my Autocar wheels.
