Hello Ari,

I should have expected this. Have been away from the forum for just some months and here is an almost half-finished (well, ok, some 20% maybe) ADT from you. Awesome as always!!! Excellent choice of model IMHO. Would build one myself if I wasn't too busy already. So that´s why I ask you where you managed to get the drawings I see in the background in some pictures? Seems to be from the spare parts catalogue.

Will follow this amazing build closely.

Stefan

Thanks Stefan,
those drawings are from Volvo Prosis Workshop Manual & Parts Catalogue DVD. There are plenty of them for sale on Ebay:

I started working with the front axle. First I made the a-frame:)
The front axle is mounted to the frame via a 3-point mounting system, consisting of rubber springs and shock absorbers.

I made the bracket for the rubber springs and shock absorbers. There's three absorbers on each side:)

It's looking more crowded with each update! Have you had to do any re-engineering yet?

I was able to start making the front frame and I also got the front axle mounted with the rubber springs.
As Lil Giants earlier said, it's getting more crowded each update and I can see now that there wont be much room lenghtwise for the drop box and drive shaft to the front axle:( Will see how short drop box I'm able to make;)

Re: Volvo A40F

On the front axle and gearbox...
- flip the axle over so the input is at the front - may still have a problem with getting the drive to the rear though (not to mention if it goes backward).
- run the drop box in the rear, requires two drive shafts across the articulation joint.
not very scale options... but if you get pushed...

I am seriously jealous of the work completed to date... wish I had the skills, tools and time to do it. :-)

Cheers,
AP

I will try to keep it as scale as possible, so no flipping axles just yet;)

I made some progress with the front frame and also got the frame link bearing housing machined.

I started to make the articulated joint or rear hitch as Volvo calls the part. I will make it in steel and in one peace. It will be quite complex part to machine, will see how it turns out:)

How long did that program take to mill the above steps? Are you manually spraying coolant? I ask as I'm seriously considering adapting my mill to cnc.

And this is a really detailed, build. It looks killer!!! I've been wanting to build a larger dumper like this, but a few other projects first to gain some more knowledge. I'm eager to see what you figure out with the trying to stay scale on the driveline. You are very talented!!

It took about half an hour, I took 0.2 mm side steps with 6 mm ball end mill.
I'm using mist coolant and I love it. It blows the chips away and the air cools down the tool and it uses very little cooling oil that doesn't mess up your machine.

Hello Hemi1966

His works are really leaving us with dropped jaw, everything you do is a tremendous perfection.

This is a CNC milling machine?

Thank you,

Carlos

Very fun doing these type of parts. Too bad you don't have a indexing head so you can rotate the part vertically or horizontally without disturbing the setup in the three jaw then turn it 0-90deg.
Here is an example. I don't have a vertical shot.

I do have a indexing head, but I'm worried that as I must machine the back side of the part also, I have to clamp the part long way out of the chuck and it may not be very solid:(

I got the driveline connected through the rear hitch:) The drive shaft from hitch is too short so I need to get longer one.

I think the front body parts the cab and the engine cover will be very challenging to make, there's not many straight panels there:(
