On the charge port, I would suggest checking if you can get a right angle plug of the same size... Typically they are a bit shorter...

On the sound, I am sure you will get it sorted, more than likely it is something simple... Wrong plug or wrong direction etc... There are lots of wires in these things... It's really easy to get a couple wrong first time around! :-)

Let us know if you want us to review how it is connected... Pics and diagrams will make that relatively easy...

Hi Ap, not too worried about the SMX, as you say, probably have reversed a plug somewhere. In the next couple of days I will check up on the wiring in the cabine and take some pictures of how I plugged what in where. Maybe I'm too close to it to see where I might have gone wrong.

Good idea about the right angle plug for the charger! Meanwhile succeeded in charging battery by using some crocodile clips - bit iffy but went OK. Battery does get very hot though.

Check the manual, on the bottom of page 9... I think you have the smx in setup mode... If you haven't changed the jumpers since you took the photo... In post #108...

WOW, you went back to check .. thanks for that! ... The jumpers at the moment are per the manual in setting 1

When I tried to turn change the programming on the SMX, nothing much happened ... supposed to get the air brake sound, but nada ...

Thanks again for giving it some thought! Really appreciate that!

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

So this morning the non working servo controlling the valve of the hook arm was up for checking. Easier said than done, had to take all the wiring back apart ... Good thing I did remember to move the mechanism in the up position beforehand because you can't move it now that it is filled with oil. Luckily I could pull the wires without having to take off the bottom plate.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshrj5ooxb.jpg

Had to pull wires of both servos because they both run through the same piece of shrink tubing.

Didn't see any breaks in my soldering but just to make sure added a new lead I got from the gear servo I busted. Put it on the tester and it worked. I figured one of het three wires must have an internal break. So sigh of relief. And then the struggle getting those wires back to the front. Took some convincing - and a bit of rope - but got it done.

As truck stands now. Hydraulics in working order, all lights on truck working (except cabin) etc etc - Looking at pictures I notice I still have to put up the protection rings on the front wheels.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pszmjxzlar.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psksjc24rs.jpg

Tomorrow I will check on the wiring to the Universal Kingbus in the cabin and then connect it directly to the 4 way connector and bypassing the flat cable. See if that sorts the problem.

And then ... I will start on the container ... been saving that one for last. A nice and simpel straightforward nuts and bolt job. :)

Hi Stephen,
I would say this a good update. I love it when problems are solved as I'm sure you do too.
Thanks, Alan

Hi Alan, true always nice if problems get solved easy.

Did connect the Universal Bus in de cabin directly, switched polarity etc and no joy. So going to leave it for a bit. Got the tracking number of the crimping tool and parts for the servo, will look at it when I take it apart again to shorten the servo wires.

An so today I finished the last assembly. No more package sitting around.

This looks like fun!

Part 1

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psygbrjgye.jpg

As usual a beautifully piece of metalwork. All brass under the paint. Paint is excellent too.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psf4j4hqkr.jpg

First the gliders go on. Very precise fit. Model nuts in front and regular philips screws at the bottom about every other hole.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pse4z6xt2e.jpg

Front

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqgbzljdq.jpg

Bottom

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psjifrbnrd.jpg

Next the cross piece the sliding hooks of the mechanism grab on too when kipping. Had to loosen the screws holding the glider bars. Very tight fit.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy6xawkig.jpg

Rollers at the end. Had to file a bit at the holes in the supports to get the pins through. No big deal, but little files are recommended for this build.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnq5fnwbq.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psq01nkg5s.jpg

Wood flooring. Kit comes with copper nails you have to insert after drilling the holes out with a 1mm bit, then clip excess and file smooth. Someone at ScaleART had done this already. So my set came prepped like this.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psxwxs4x0b.jpg

Gets fastened with M2 model bolts. The underlying frame work had threaded holes in it. (exept the middle of the 2 small pieces ... somehow the thread were in the wrong holes. Put an M2 nut on to hold it in place.)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgzahzakw.jpg

4 uprights slide in holder and bolted on with one M2 model bolt

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1tkigpzx.jpg

Had to file some paint off to get a good/easy fit. Also had to run the file at the bottom of the holder so get rid of some excess paint.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqluavvm0.jpg

Eyebolts and chain links to tie down the load. Need 8 got 10. 2 of them extra long. Used those in the corners at the read. No way I could fasten the nut with those wheels in place there.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqe1wr69o.jpg

Chain links attached to the eye bolts

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psg09nc9kg.jpg

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Part 2

ScaleART left some indents to have access to the nuts going on the eyebolts, but even if I wanted to use M2 model nuts, I couldn't get the tool in there. So was a bit of a challenge, but after 2 you have a system.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvj5skod1.jpg

Done

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psrwsqhlku.jpg

Now prepping the boards. First the rear one. Simple but effective locking mechanism. Needs some Loctite on the nut.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdrashwjd.jpg

The pins gets fastened with crazy glue where they go through the holes. Manual stated to run a 1.5 mm bit through the hole before going through this procedure. On my kit this was done already.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdfnmjscm.jpg

Same for the longer ones on the side. Have to be careful though, one has the pins sticking out on the right and the other on the left.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pshwof4vqc.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psydxxmrmt.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psu9jdkhxt.jpg

Remembered to put the protection rings on the front wheels. Used a bit of thin double side tape to hold them in place.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psylu1nmcp.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psasvsi4d2.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswewpy28y.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pst4lzhuhk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9som5gm8.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psdcwbkp83.jpg

So that's it ... technically the end of this thread ... Now going to run this truck a bit trying not to hit too many things and then see how to sort out the sound and cabin lights.

So an update will be in the works.

One things for sure, had a great time bolting this together and I can only hope you did too indirectly then. :)

Cheers! Stephan

Truck looks GREAT!! Wasn't sure about the white cab at first- and I have a white truck to build of my own :rolleyes:- but after seeing the blue container on the truck, You have a winner!! Again, hope you find all of the gremlins in the electronics quickly and easily.

GREAT TRUCK!

Thank you tc1cat! And to think I almost got an orange / silver combo ...

lots of trucks here in Malaysia happen to be white and blue. Although they're not Mercs and usually old 4x2s :) Mostly brands I've never heard of before from China or Korea and then some local ones.

Now looking at the truck ... this is not something you are going to toss some muck in ... will have to get another container for the back. A good excuse for another ScaleART fix :)

Thanks Alan ... So do I - hate it that is has come to an end - I'm a bit lost now since this build has kept me busy for about 3 months. Guess I can finally put the 3rd coat of varnish on the front door now. :)

Very tempted to get another one, but €€€€ ...

Hi Stephan,

you did a really good job with this build! It was very interesting for my to have a look at the latest version of the roll on-/off-tipper.

By the way, I think you absolutely need two other containers ... the flat one and the high version. ;)

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Had the truck out in the garden this afternoon. Good thing I went for 8x8. Had to use the diff locks a couple of times to get him to move. I also found out that I had never torqued the 2 nuts holding the wheels onto the first rear axle :p  An interesting moment.

One thing for sure, third gear is way too fast for me.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psezc1ymii.jpg

Tried unloading the container, but it got stuck in the grass. Need a smoother surface for that exercise. Meanwhile I can pretend to unload like this.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psddlenm2y.jpg

Without the side panels

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy1x8uzgi.jpg

And last picture, containing all the areas that needed some filing.
The supports for the rollers could be a bit bigger so there would be no need to elongate the holes in it as to get the pin through it.

You can also see how the long eyebolt attaches. (and it looks like I will need a bigger washer there)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psikmi2qze.jpg

Hi Brel, Tom, chriss1210 ... Thank you for the comments.

As for a video of it running ... will be a while due to slow 3G internet and nobody around to hold the phone.

Meanwhile I finally found a supplier of decent paint. Now seriously thinking of repainting the chassis in RAL 3002 (red). Since I will have to take the truck partly apart when I replace the 2 supports of the kipping mechanism, might as well do a proper job of it then. Will not be for tomorrow although I did put in an order for the paint.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Time for an update here.

Christian who has the same container in the works pointed out a problem:
These hooks that hold the container during kipping are supposed to go completely over the cross piece.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswnbuf1jv.jpg

And the sliding hooks that control the locking mechanism for other containers are blocked too,

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnuu1ufpo.jpg

ScaleArt is aware of this problem and will come out with an update to fix this. However in the meantime I decided to see if I could come up with something that would make it work as it should.

Since the cross bar is too thick to let the hooks slide over it, filing is in order:

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pso9gxbz94.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psv3h1cieo.jpg

Because a decent chunk of material was removed, a little bit of bracing would be good.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pswjhseof6.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psim5aflil.jpg

With this all taken care of noticed that now the hook mechanisme slides into the diagonal support of the exhaust - why did I have to order that piece? - bending it.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psvugjdlvs.jpg

Added a small piece of aluminium to alleviate this problem.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psqf8jjfmq.jpg

After some filler and sanding tested it.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6w3dpyxj.jpg

Missing the diagonal support with a hair! Will add some small bits of rubber to give a bit more distance.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psmwcp7drw.jpg

Painted the cross bit black since it is barely visible.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psbhktbaba.jpg

Added 2 rubber bumper stops to it to give more distance

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psfru0gyap.jpg

And re-installed. Everything now working in good order :)

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psh4ss7sg2.jpg

Now waiting for the replacement pieces I messed up when I drilled out the broken bolts.

OK guys, I'll admit, I'm flattered, but I wouldn't nominate for "build" of the year though ... "assembly thread" would be more appropriate since I didn't really "build" this one.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Quick update. The 2 pieces to attach the hook mechanism to the frame arrived yesterday. So can now replace the ones I messed up when I had to drill out the screws after I broke of the head.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psv250cjzo.jpg

I had also ordered a complete set of street tires a) to see how the truck behaves with those and b) because I am partial to the look of them.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pseqi4p9fp.jpg

While I replace the tires I will also adjust the track rods of the rear axle. The wheel is not nicely centred in the fender like the other one.

First rear axle, ± centred

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pspj6k0f1r.jpg

Last one too far back and the tire hits the fender sometimes. Think I will have to shorten the track rod about 1.5 to 2mm. While I have the fenders off I can at the same time paint those stainless screw heads black too.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psy4ha8nj7.jpg

Cheers

Hopefully I can get to it later this week.
Congrats on getting the "Baustoffmulde"!
It will be a great addition to your Palfinger equipped truck!

Hi Tracy, it is from the Trilex series from Scaleart. They have the 6-hole version (which I ordered) and the more modern 10-hole version. Both are metal casts.

https://scaleart-shop.de/en/Drive-Technology/Wheels/

The pictures in their webshop don't really show the detail. I was pleasantly surprised when I unpacked this one.

Couldn't find the 6-hole version for the front axle. Turned out that you have to order the front axle with them so they are under rear axles (no wonder I had a hard time finding them  )

Hi all, a couple of days ago I noticed that Christian (Newcomer_2) posted the pictures of the updated cross brace ScaleART released for the container on a German site. Rather than giving you the link to the site it would be nice if he would post them here.

So I took the liberty to ask him if he would be so kind as to do that. Looking forward to him posting when he has the time.

So by the time he has updated us on the fix I will hopefully have sorted out some of the stuff that is temporarily keeping me from messing around with the truck.

:)

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Stephan,

thank you for inviting me to post some pictures of the updated cross brace for the container in your thread.

Let´s start! - In the following picture you can see an extract of the manual, the new cross brace (= the black parts) an the old version (the red part on right side):

http://up.picr.de/23254692qt.jpg

And here you can have a closer look on the updated parts and the first step of the assembling:

http://up.picr.de/23254688dr.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254691ob.jpg

The next step is to mount it on the container. Because of the contersunk holes on the longitudinal profile of the carriage, I swapped the round head screws of the manual against countersunk screws and bolted them from the outside inwards. The screw head I simply painted black with a waterproof pen.

http://up.picr.de/23254686us.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254687sl.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254698nb.jpg

The new cross brace has passed the function test. It can slide under the hooks of the roll-on/-off-mechanism and is held securely. The small scratches prove a secure hold.

http://up.picr.de/23254699wk.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254704rl.jpg

It also fits to the trailor:

http://up.picr.de/23254703we.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254701no.jpg

http://up.picr.de/23254702jo.jpg

I'm glad because of the supporting of ScaleART in such cases. If there is a problem, they're always searching for a solution.

Stephan, now it´s your turn to go on. But first of all do all the the other things around you! Then you can much more enjoy the assembling. ;)

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Thank you Christian! If we had to wait till I receive the updated parts and find the time to install it, would have taken forever :)

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Today appointments got cancelled and it rained so no painting the front door ... meaning I could do some stuff to the Arocs.

First replace the bits I mucked up drilling out the screws. A bit of a fiddle with all the hydraulic lines installed, but all in all doable. Good thing I re-ordered the screws because seriously messed up the head of the countersunk screw due to the loctite used. Should have heated the screw with a soldering iron to loosen the loctite.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pssjlw8gzh.jpg

Replaced them one side at the time.

Here the worst one with the replacement. Replacement is gloss and looks better finished.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psssu4h2gk.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psejeoycup.jpg

Had to take the fenders of to do this repair. Painted the screws holding them together black - something I picked up from Christian. Looks much better this way.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psll28c3ez.jpg

Then had to adjust the tracking rods on the rear axle. In the manual they indicated about 50mm, so shortened them to 48.5 mm. Not so easy to get those track rods off. Good thing I have a flexible screw driver.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8drutwpw.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgr3j0zt8.jpg

Then replace the off-road tires to street tires.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psgyo29btp.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnjgyh3sx.jpg

Could have shortened the tracking rod a bit more, but still better than before.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psib56yye4.jpg

And everything back in place and working.

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psnbwchdla.jpg

http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...pslevqubcl.jpg

That's it. :)

Beautiful truck. I would think for the money they charge for those kits they would include hex hardware instead of phillips.

Rakthi 10-12-2015 10:15 PM

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Yes, you are right, it would have been nice to have more if not all hex fasteners. But since the phillips screws are predominantly in areas not normally visible it is not such a big deal (personal opinion). Like most companies it is a delicate balance between profit (survival) and quality.

Considering this stuff is 100% made in Germany, not known for low wages / taxes, ScaleART probably make less of a profit than the Chinese competitors who sell their stuff at half the cost.

Re: Scaleart - assembling an Arocs 8x8 roll on roll off kipper

Hi Sneff, during the build I thought of replacing some of the philips with model nuts, but never got around to it. Too difficult to source them here in Malaysia.

I'm stopping on the Arocs for a bit. Ordered an SM3 sound module for it. I'm going to start on the MAN and will get back to the Arocs when I do the wiring on the new one.

Pretty happy with the Arocs at the moment and not too bothered with the sound and lights that aren't working. I also decided not to bother with replacing the cross brace with the updated one.

Here a quick pic of the frame rails of the MAN 6x6 tractor in relation to the 8x8.

Longer than I thought it would be.
