Impressive metal work!

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks DaBomb,
I've been putting around here and there on the bunks and stakes. I managed to get both of them spring loaded now I just need to make the cables and cinches...and the rollers that follow the turntable and..... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psa4a9c2c7.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps62b04f47.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd1128669.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9158b01a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps281cc331.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psdd2b1c4c.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps24c14c45.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psf4e29ab3.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psa5b4bdc3.jpg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
That's really nice work, Reg. You are the best welder on this site, I think! So is a trailer in the works too? Errr, or do they call it the rear dolly for a timber hauling set-up like this?

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Got the bunk rollers ruffed in. Now I have to make the cinches for the cables that hold the stakes up while loaded.
Thanks for looking http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psff9d4b19.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7f982784.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps73c602a4.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps12f46f3c.jpg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Finished up the cinches on both bunks and got the cables on the front one. It doesn't look as scale as I would have liked but that's the way it goes sometimes I guess. At least they function properly!

Lovin' the details! Not much else to say. :D

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
This has been really interesting for me to watch, Reg. I work around highway log trucks but the big off-road trucks are non-existent around here. Used to be in the '60's and '70's when there was still old-growth and the hauls were short. The turntable and the hitch on this truck are new on me and I'm sure there will be more. Add to that your skill and speed with aluminum or whatever you yourself want to call it and this is a great build.
Will there be cutting edges on the bunks for the logs to grab on to so you don't strip the load? |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks for following along Jared. I hadn't really planned on doing the cutting edges but now that you mentioned it I think I will. The material is thick enough to mill a little off in the middle creating them on the edges of the bunk.
I had enough pipe left to make 5 more rims so I did that today. I also welded the turntable to the frame and mounted the front fenders. After that I took it out for a test drive with the body on. I guess I shouldn't have been driving it up steep slopes and loading the motor heavy because it fried the esc. The esc is only rated at 8.4v and I'm running 12v so I'm not too shocked that it didn't last. I guess I went backward $60 there so that sucks... Please ignore the rubber bands and twist tie.lol http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pse093ac87.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5712bbc1.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps92be83bd.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8f28f135.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1ed24cad.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0fef252a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7c4bace.jpg Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Check out m-Tronics speed controls - no frills - but some are rated for massive input and huge amperage. Hardly any bec though. They are used mainly for boating but are a beast with power.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Wow, Reg she's a beauty. It's going to be a shame to put any paint on it. How about chrome. To bad about the esc, I fried a saber tooth too and don't have a clue what happened. What wall thickness did the rim tubing have to start with? Nice job in the bunk and turn table. How Long's the reach going to be on the trailer, by the looks of it you'll be carrying six foot logs!!!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Thanks for the link Izzy. I like the boat ones because they never have delays, brakes or anything fancy. The esc seems to be fine if you hook up a separate battery for the receiver. I guess the servo fried the bec part of it. I bought a hexfly servo because of it's torque per cost but it is a piece of ****. The first one I got was junk out of the package and this one has overloaded the bec in the speed control:mad:. I ordered some Hitec stuff this morning to hopefully rectify the problem.
The pipe that I'm using for the rims is .270 thick. I have to turn it down fairly thin on the beads but it seems to work OK, just takes a while to machine. Still much faster and cheaper than machining round stock. I'll have to get a bit more of it so that I can make three more wheels. If my calculations are correct the logs will be 40"-50" long. I may have to do the carpet roll with bark trick. I swear I've seen that somewhere before;). I will cut some real logs though too. I'm guessing it will be an all cedar load though to keep it light. The truck is a beast, I'm thinking it is around 30lbs without the trailer or a load:eek:. Thanks for the comments! Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Lovin' the outdoor photos of the truck in the raw state! It's a looker, that's for sure. Beautiful craftsmanship Reg.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Looking nice in the outdoor pics. Question about the bars rear of bunk, they will not restrict movement on bunk?? Guess bunk can be turned around quite much in tight curves.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Haha, I can't take any credit for the elk. I found it in an old hunting camp in northern BC. I guess who ever shot it thought that is wasn't worth keeping but I thought it was cool. To get it home we had to store it on the bed in our camper each day and even though it was really old it still stunk. The misses was not nearly as impressed with it as I was:confused:....It works great for hanging my bandsaw blades on. I guess it's just a good thing that the picture is blurry or the thing hanging to the left would get me in trouble on here:cool:.
The bars on the back don't stop the bunk from turning 360 but the rollers wouldn't make contact if you turned that sharp. You can almost jack knife the truck without the bunk leaving the turntable though. |

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Unfortunately it's time to get out of the gutter and back onto the work bench.... I took a couple days away from the truck but today I spent a little time on the trailer wheels. The wheels are made up of three pieces and pressed together...

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
beatiful! do you have a way of presets or do you have to remeasure and align the mill for each part (where you make multiples of each, like the wheels)?
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg those look great. Are you going to have wedges for them? Ed
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
cdm, My mill has a DRO on it which helps a lot but I used a rotary table to drill the holes and just eyeballed the rest.
Ed, These suckers are pressed in tight so no wedges. In fact one hub got stuck before it made it to where it needs to be. Now I have to try to press it out and take a little off. The trouble is, it wrecked the bead on the wheel. I guess it's a good thing I made 5 rims...so much for being ahead one when I start the lowbed:confused:. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Reg now you are getting like me take one step forward and go 2 steps back you think you got it and some little thing screws you up. Ed
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Haha that's how I always operate! I just went to my Dads shop and used his 50 ton press. Worked like a charm:rolleyes:. I was able to straighten the bead on the wheel too so I'm happy again. I just had to spend an extra hour on something that should have been finished yesterday.lol
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
The rims look really nice Reg. I guess I'm not the only who takes more steps backwards then forwards! Or maybe just enough to even things out. I should probably start making one extra of everything, like you, for those occasions where something goes wrong!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I think that I move forward every time I work on something it just takes at least a third longer than I figure it should to get it done! Nothing I do seems to go as planned but that's part of the fun:confused:?
I threw the KW on the scales and as it sits with no trailer it is 37lbs! I'm guessing that by the time the trailer is on it will be 50+. |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I know that I don't even have a trailer and clearly the driver didn't check the tire pressure but I couldn't help myself... The rear tires still have the original foams and the logs are fresh out of the forest so they are quite heavy. I'm guessing between 80-100lbs.
I think its gonna look cool when its finished though... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3bc1ebef.jpg Reg |
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
80 to 100 pound load? Whoah! That's really crazy. Looks scale though! That much wood would keep a stove going till the morning. Your truck will probably be able to give you a ride, if you could sit on the trailer. I've always wanted to do that. Kind of like those 1/4 scale live steam locomotives. :D
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
I wouldn't try moving it with that much weight. Something would break in the driveline for sure! I'm hoping that the wood will dry out a lot by July when I need it for the show I'm attending. I wanted to pile it on the truck to see if I needed more wood:rolleyes:. I think a couple more logs will do the trick!
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
WHOA!!! tires look a little flat! Biggest log on top about 7" diameter? What is your diff ratio?

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Oh, I think your gears will be fine... my tam trks will pull 80lbs without damage... what's important is a very smooooth esc with a light brake and gentle tx stick movement. ;) No pop a wheelies with a load on !!! :D
|
Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
What esc do you use in your truck Joe? I was thinking of using a Sabertooth and switching on the soft start like I have done on the swing in my Volvo but I haven't bought anything yet. The one that I was using(it got sick) is a Tazer and isn't very smooth with any weight on it. I used it in my Euc for some time but switched it out in favor of a Proboat esc. It is much smoother but I have had it go into protection mode once so it's probably not heavy duty enough for the 850.

Re: Kenworth 850 Off Highway
Both the KH dump trk & white GL have used a Mtronic Viper Marine 15A for yrs! The green GL is using a 2x12 Sabertooth (the 2nd controller is for the hyd pump).
The Mtronics come from the UK, I tried to get some more Viper Marine 15A esc's a few yrs ago & even try their latest 20A version from Howes Hobby, but they wouldn't ship to Canada on a CC# order, insistance of a money order seemed ____? Anybody have a north american source b/c I'd like to get some more of these smoooth brushed esc's. ;) |
