Grinding, sanding,,,,, yeah all that fun stuff,,!!! I equate it to drywall, every time on is like the last coat!!! But if looking at my work I don't practice what I preach. Lol!!! I got all excited once I saw that telescopic cylinder!!! I think you should make that a real one, then I can copy it. !!!! Lol!!! Looks really good reg!!! Well back to drywall and replacing carpet!!

Lou and I attended a show in Port Alberni BC yesterday. It was nice to catch up with Lou again as well as a few of my wife and I's friends from town there. We managed to snap a few pics of the baby Hayes on big brothers fender...

Hello,
Very very good model.
How you made leaf springs for this model. Especially for the front axle.

RCP57 10-07-2016 10:31 AM

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

The springs are made using old lawn rakes. The fingers on the rakes are slightly wider than a stock Tamiya spring but work really well for 1/14 scale. I have to heat the ends to roll eyes into them but it's not too bad if you build a jig.

Just took another look at this build....and have to say you have done an outstanding job, nice very nice!!!

Any plans or time for another 1/10 scale build in the near future??

RCP57 11-30-2016 11:25 AM

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

Thanks KP. At this point I have no plans to build anything for myself in any scale. I would like to build a dozer in 1/10 but that seems less and less likely all of the time. When RCP's is busy I am basically on the computer answering messages or in the shop from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. When it's not busy I either don't have the extra money for a personal project or I honestly just want to GTFO of the shop and do something outside.lol Maybe sometime in the future things will change but for now that's reality. It isn't so bad building stuff for other people and having it go away. I get my build fix and don't have to store the finished product!

Those clamps, are they used when welding? Where can I find those, never seen something like that before.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

Yes Dan, they are called Cleco clamps. They work well and are fairly cheap. Just don't get them too hot.

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

I've had this one on the bench over the last few days as I try to get a little progress made on several different projects. A few weekends ago I spent a day and a half making a scissor lift for the bed using a P16 actuator. It worked OK up to about 8# but struggled to do more so I tossed it aside. I have been trying to avoid using a screwdrive in this thing but I finally gave in and went with what I know. Unlike any other I've built over the last 3+ years, this one is in the truck chassis. It has roughly 18# of lead acid batteries in the back and dumps it with ease. I wanted to keep the dummy lift cylinders and prop rod as symmetrical as possible when the bed was up in an effort to draw less attention to the prop rod itself. Some careful "eyeball" measuring of the prop rod length took care of that.lol The truck will be yellow so I'll have to decide what color looks the least noticeable on the prop rod(yellow or black). I'm happy to have this step done as it was the last major hurdle to get over. I will wire up and mount some limit switches, then I can get on with the final details and have this ready for paint when the weather warms up!

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

It's been a few months again but it's time to finish this up so I've been putting in some hours over the last few days. Most of the major building was finished when I last left off but there were a lot of details to add. I have a lot to do yet but the last three days have been productive for making tiny "one off" parts.

I started out by making some roof lights. I needed Arrow 39's for this truck and as far as I know they are not available so some hand filing was needed after some basic machining... I also turned a horn in the lathe while I was at it.

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5pzc9ljw.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psdg9xzftu.jpg

Next up was to cut the amber plexi for the side makers and machine a tow pin for the front bumper...

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psmbhxik64.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psvimdlm0z.jpg

Added mirrors and trimmed the exhaust tip.

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pselzzrlsw.jpg

Then I made up a shovel and mounted it to the bed along with the axe I made months ago.

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psopgpatjr.jpg
http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psbwlca3ru.jpg

Finally I moved to the rear where I added a tow pin, brake booster pods and a pair of Russ's tail light bezels. Oh, and mudflaps too!

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pshbkaeslr.jpg

There are still a few little things to do but I hope to have it ready for paint this coming week...

Haha, thanks! Realistically it would be pricey one for sure. Not sure about a million $$ but $10000 wouldn't be out of the question for the time and money invested. I haven't touched it yet today but I put over 25hrs in it again just in the last 3 days. I would estimate that 400+hrs at this point would not be a stretch plus the materials cost.

Thanks Brandon! On Friday I was starting on the interior and decided the dash needed something. I had a flashback to a little part I had been hoarding since I was a kid so I dug it out and got to work...

Reg, are them dash fans still available? If so, where to buy it from?

I honestly don't remember where the "blades" came from but I had it stashed away in a margarine container for about 30 years. The rest of it was whipped up in about an hour and a half by yours truly.

It looks AWESOME! One similar to it would look good in logging truck I'll be building this winter. If you find em, or hear of anyone that's selling 'em, PLEASE let me know

Re: Hayes HD Dump Truck - Take II

If you can make the motor, mount and cage, I'm sure you could also make the blades. I just used this plastic thing because I had it. An added bonus of using it was that I could justify my hoarding to my wife...😎

I decided I should do a dirt test before finishing up the fab and paint.
